My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 331
Chapter 331 A Bunch of Ruffians
Mu Yu took a few deep breaths in disbelief while trying hard to calm herself down. After barely pulling herself together, she carefully reread the text message from beginning to end without missing a word. Still, she couldn’t believe what was said in the text message. As her hands trembled, she dialed the phone number from which the text message was sent, only to hear a voice saying that the number she had dialed was unavailable.
She massaged her aching temples hard, clutched her cell phone, and read the text message carefully once again. The more she read it, the more it struck a chill into her heart, and the angrier she became. If everything in this text message is true, how am I going to trust Huan in the future? Wait, calm down! I haven’t figured out the intentions of the person who sent this text message, so I mustn’t get all in a fluster. Perhaps this is just someone’s malicious attempt to drive a wedge between us. I have to find out the truth about this! But what if…
“Yu? Yu? What’s wrong with you?” Just then, Rong Jian’s voice interrupted Mu Yu’s thoughts. When she looked up, she saw Rong Jian; he had gotten back into the car and was looking back at her in surprise. She immediately put away her cell phone and replied with a forced smile, “N-Nothing. Let’s go.”
Rong Jian turned around, sat tight, and put on his seat belt as he asked her, “Are you thinking about Qian Daqing’s case?”
“Uh-huh,” Mu Yu replied vaguely as she didn’t want him to notice anything wrong.
“Qian Daqing lived in the Xihu District of Huacheng and had been hanging around there all the time; Zhao Yongli’s supermarket was in Donghu District, whereas Li Jianyun lived in the flea market in Beihu District. For now, I haven’t found what the three had in common, but since all of them came from Huacheng, I think this must have something to do with their deaths. Also, I have reason to believe that Sun Meilan must have been to Huacheng about six years ago. I was tied down by something urgent so I came back first, but I’ve sent Zihao and Lifeng to Huacheng to find out the reason why Qian Daqing and his family left Huacheng, which I think was also the reason Li Jianyun and Zhao Yongli left Huacheng one after another. What do you think, Yu? Yu?” Only then did Rong Jian notice Mu Yu’s absence of mind. While waiting at a red light, he pulled up and turned around. When he saw how ghastly pale Mu Yu’s face was, he instantly became nervous. “What’s wrong with you, Yu? Are you feeling unwell?”
“No, I’m fine,” Mu Yu replied glumly, her eyes lowered.
“You certainly don’t look well, though! What happened? Did you have a falling-out with Huan?” Rong Jian asked. When he saw that Mu Yu continued to shake her head, he became somewhat anxious. “Stop lying to me; the look on your face has told me everything. Tell me—what on earth happened? Let’s see if I can help you.”
At this moment, the traffic light had turned green, and the cars behind them honked like crazy when they saw that Rong Jian’s car wasn’t moving at all. However, Rong Jian ignored them and stared at Mu Yu as he asked again, “Are you unwilling to tell me the truth because you doubt my ability or because you distrust me?”
“No, not at all, Chief Rong. Please don’t overthink it,” Mu Yu hurriedly explained. “It has nothing to do with you. It’s just that I’m…” She couldn’t finish her sentence because she wasn’t ready to tell someone else what was said in the text message.
“What’s wrong with you?” When he saw that Mu Yu was silent again, Rong Jian pondered for a moment and asked, “Did Huan do something that has upset you?”
Mu Yu’s eyes darkened in an instant when she caught a hint of peculiarity in Rong Jian’s words. “What has he done behind my back? What do you know about it?!”
“I don’t know anything—I’m waiting for you to tell me about it!” Rong Jian replied. Then, with a solemn expression, he said in all seriousness, “Yu, I regard you as my sister-in-law, but in reality, I have always treated you as my own sister, so you may also regard me as your own brother. If Huan really did something unfair to you, tell me so that I’ll set things straight for you! I—”
Bang! Bang! Bang! Just then, someone banged on the car window, cutting Rong Jian short and startling Mu Yu. When she turned her head, she saw a ferocious-looking face. At the same time, the person’s gruff yelling voice rang in her ears. “Are you f*cking out of your mind? How could you block the traffic by stopping your car in the middle of the road?! Even a mutt doesn’t stand in somebody’s way. How could you be f*cking worse than a mutt?”
Since he knew that he was in the wrong, Rong Jian ignored the person’s abuses. “I’m sorry,” he apologized while turning around. When he saw that the traffic light had turned red again, he immediately gave the person an apologetic smile.
However, the person wasn’t in a hurry to leave when he saw that the red light would stay on for more than a minute. Instead, he leered at Mu Yu in the back seat and clicked his tongue as he commented, “You’ve got good taste, bro. This lady is good-looking enough; her skin is fair and tender, and her tits are so big. It must be great to grab hold of them, right?”
Rong Jian’s face hardened at once. “What are you talking about?”
The person thought nothing of Rong Jian’s response, though. He then suggested with a lewd grin, “How about I pay you 10,000, and you let your woman sleep with me for a night? What do you think, bro?”
Rong Jian had gotten his car serviced before the trip to Huacheng, and he hadn’t picked it up after returning from Huacheng since he planned to do so after work. At the moment, he was driving an electric vehicle that Feng Rubing had bought for 30,000 before the turn of the year. Therefore, it was understandable that the man looked down on him.
Rong Jian shot the man a frosty glare while uttering, “Scram!” between clenched teeth.
“Don’t take it seriously. I was just joking.” Instead of getting angry, the man leaned close to Rong Jian with a smirk. Then, he lowered his voice and continued, “Bro, let me share with you my experience with ladies. Ladies don’t need to be spoiled; all you need to do is to screw them real hard. As long as you f*ck them into submission, she’ll… Ouch! How dare you f*cking hit me?!”
“I’ll cut your tongue off if you dare to spew sh*t out of your mouth again!” Rong Jian turned off the car engine furiously, unfastened his seat belt, and was about to get out of the car. However, Mu Yu didn’t want to get into trouble, so she hurriedly stopped him. “Just let it go, Chief Rong! Don’t let yourself sink to the likes of him.”
“Do you think you can get away after hitting someone?”
The man whose eye had been bruised by Rong Jian quickly pulled the car door open and grabbed him. At the same time, four or five ruffians got out of the van behind them, each with a long machete in their hands as they charged toward Rong Jian while hurling abuses at him.
Meanwhile, Rong Jian quickly got out of the car and kicked the man who grabbed him out of the way. Then, he stood in front of the door to the back seat, where Mu Yu was seated, and hurriedly took off his jacket while telling her to stay inside and not get out of the car.
“Be careful, Chief Rong!”
Mu Yu was scared stiff when she saw the gleaming machetes being swung at Rong Jian. As she screamed involuntarily, she frantically took out her cell phone and called Qin Jinhuan for help.
Rong Jian looked fearless, though. Grabbing his jacket by the collar, he swung it at the few men who charged at him head-on, and it didn’t take him much effort to knock the machetes off their hands. Then, he floored the men one by one with a kick and kicked the machetes to the side of the car.
The man who had been hit first didn’t dare to get close to Rong Jian after getting hurt. He only dared to cover his bruised eye and stand in the distance. “F*ck! I didn’t expect you to be good at this. No wonder you’re so arrogant! Don’t be so cocky, though. It was you who blocked the traffic and hit me first. I’ll call the police to have you arrested and let you taste what it’s like to be in jail!” he swore, pointing his finger at Rong Jian as he took out his cell phone as if to call the police.
“They really are going to call the police, Chief Rong. What should we do?” Mu Yu asked Rong Jian nervously. As he was standing in front of her, she couldn’t get out of the car, so she could only kneel in the back seat while grabbing the frame of the car window. She worried that these men would call the police. Rong Jian’s identity would be exposed once they called the police, which might cause him to be accused—without good reason—of beating ordinary citizens as a police officer. The consequences would definitely be bad if those unaware of the truth molded public opinion as they pleased.
Rong Jian didn’t mind it, though. “Let them do as they please.” He wasn’t someone who couldn’t stand being scolded. Moreover, it was his fault today for blocking the traffic in the first place, so he didn’t mind being sworn at. However, he couldn’t stand it when the man insulted Mu Yu in such filthy language. Furthermore, he thought this man was too arrogant, so he decided to teach these scourges of society a lesson.
The man who had been hit couldn’t help but laugh at Rong Jian’s nonchalance. “It seems that society hasn’t taught you a lesson. In that case, I’ll teach you a lesson in its stead today.”
“This brat doesn’t yet know how powerful Brother Fan is, Brother Peng,” one of the man’s companions chimed in.
The man called Brother Peng laughed in disdain. “It’s all right. He’ll know that soon enough.”
Thanks to the fight between them, not only were cars lining up behind Rong Jian’s car, but even the fork of the road was jammed with traffic at the moment. However, no one dared to complain when they saw the situation. They merely got out of their cars and watched from a distance. Even the traffic policemen on both sides of the road didn’t dare to come over and mediate between the two parties. Instead, they only dared to hide in a corner and called the police in secret.
Rong Jian asked in reply with a thoughtful expression, “Who is the Brother Fan that you guys are talking about?”
“He’s Liu Xiaofan, the chief of the Crime Unit!” Brother Peng answered in an unusually loud voice.
“Liu Xiaofan? The chief of the Crime Unit?”
“That’s right! You’ve heard of him, haven’t you?” The man who had been hit straightened his back with a smug look on his face. “Let me tell you one thing—he’s my own brother! If you kowtow and apologize to me today, I’ll probably be the bigger person and let you off. Otherwise, I’ll make you spend the rest of your life in jail!”
Rong Jian stared at him coldly. “How could a petty chief of the Crime Unit be so powerful?”
Brother Peng let out a loud snort. “Let’s wait and see if you don’t believe me. When you land yourself in real trouble, don’t blame me for not reminding you in advance!”
“Well, thanks for your reminder,” Rong Jian replied. Then, he picked up the machetes, tossed them onto the passenger seat, and got into the car.
Brother Peng immediately stepped forward and yelled. “Do you want to run away after hitting someone?!”
“No, I’m not running away. Since I’ve hit somebody, I should turn myself in,” Rong Jian replied before rolling up the car window. When he saw that the traffic light had turned green again, he immediately started up his car and moved forward.
“Follow that car! Don’t let him run away! I’ve called the police, and I must teach him a lesson today!” said Brother Peng as he urged his underlings to get into the van.
Mu Yu asked worriedly, “What should we do now, Chief Rong? You’re not going to turn yourself in for real, are you?”
“Only the opposite will happen.” Rong Jian had dialed Liu Xiaofan’s number and asked the latter whether he had a brother called Brother Peng as he was driving. Liu Xiaofan didn’t understand why he had suddenly asked such a question, but he honestly told him that he did have a cousin named Zhou Peng from the countryside. Rong Jian said, “Your cousin wants to make me spend the rest of my life in jail. Just find a way to grant his wish.”
Liu Xiaofan laughed at once. “Is there something wrong with you today, Chief? You sound so humorous.”
“I’m not trying to sound humorous. What I said is true. If you don’t believe me, just go ask your Brother Peng.”
Liu Xiaofan seemed to sense that something was wrong. After falling silent for a few seconds, he said on the other end of the line before hanging up, “I’ll deal with him.”
Rong Jian criticized Liu Xiaofan angrily after hanging up. “Fan has gotten more and more swollen-headed recently. If he doesn’t get disciplined, he’ll be unfit to be a law enforcer.”
His words reminded Mu Yu of the anonymous text message she had received earlier. After some hesitation, she asked inquiringly, “Chief Rong, Officer Liu hasn’t done anything fundamentally wrong recently, has he?”
“Fundamentally wrong? What do you mean?”
“Accepting bribes.”
“Nah, Fan won’t go that far. Even though he seems sloppy, he’s actually very conscientious about his work. Besides, he’s a man of principle, so I can say for certain that he will never accept bribes from these men. Why would you suddenly ask such a question, Yu?”
“Nothing,” Mu Yu replied. Then, as she felt that such a response wouldn’t suffice, she quickly added, “The man who was hit just now looked a bit like Officer Liu, so they’re probably cousins. You heard what he said just now, didn’t you? If their words are true, it’ll show that Officer Liu often uses his position to serve his own interests. Such a person doesn’t have a strong sense of principle, so it’s not impossible for him to accept bribes.”
“Fan would never do such a thing! I trust him! I—”
Screech! Just then, a car suddenly cut in front of them. Rong Jian, who had been driving at normal speed, immediately slammed on the brakes, causing Mu Yu—who had been leaning between the driver’s seat and the passenger seat—to lose her balance for a moment as she fell headlong right away.
“Aaaah!”
“Watch out!”
Rong Jian immediately stretched out his hand to keep Mu Yu back, whereas she instinctively clutched the back of the front seat. She managed to steady herself with some effort at first, but they didn’t expect the car behind them to bump into the back of their car. The collision created a powerful impact that shook Mu Yu’s hand off the seat and loosened Rong Jian’s grip. The next instant, Mu Yu bumped her head. Everything went black before her eyes, and she passed out.
