My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 332
Chapter 332 Finding Out the Truth
Mu Yu was already in the hospital when she regained consciousness.
“How do you feel now, Yu?”
She opened her eyes and heard Qin Jinhuan’s voice, which was full of anxiety, before she was fully awake. At the same time, her hand was being held tightly; she knew without thinking that the hand that grabbed hers must be his. As her memory froze at the instant her body fell headlong, she was instantly seized with panic. She subconsciously grabbed his hand in return while shouting his name.
“I’m here! I’m here! It’s all right, so don’t be afraid,” Qin Jinhuan comforted her as he held her in his arms.
“She’s come round at last.”
Upon hearing Rong Jian’s voice, Mu Yu immediately pushed Qin Jinhuan aside, looked at Rong Jian, and asked, “Chief Rong? Are you all right?”
“I’m fine,” Rong Jian replied with a smile after heaving a long sigh.
“How’s the person called Brother Peng then?” Before Mu Yu passed out, she clearly saw that it was Zhou Peng’s car that had suddenly cut in front of them from behind. Because of that, she was injured and thus hospitalized. Judging by what she knew about Qin Jinhuan, he definitely wouldn’t have mercy on Zhou Peng and his men.
Rong Jian subconsciously glanced at Qin Jinhuan as he replied softly, “He’s hospitalized too.”
“Is he severely injured?”
“He’ll be fine after some recuperation.”
Sensing the hidden meaning behind Rong Jian’s words, Mu Yu immediately turned to look at Qin Jinhuan and asked, “Didn’t you let the police handle this?”
Qin Jinhuan’s anger welled up again at the mention of Zhou Peng. He said with a snort, “It’s not necessary to bother the police with such a trivial matter.”
“But—”
Just then, someone knocked on the door, and Mu Yu buttoned her lip, thinking that it was the medical staff coming in. To her surprise, the person who came in was Liu Xiaofan, who looked very uneasy. After greeting Qin Jinhuan and Rong Jian respectfully, he looked at Mu Yu nervously and asked, “Are you all right, Doctor Mu?”
In reality, Mu Yu had merely fainted out of fright; she was fine aside from a few scratches—which were nothing serious—since Rong Jian had protected her at the time. At first, she had wanted to tell Liu Xiaofan that she was fine, but the sight of him reminded her of the text message she had received before the car accident. As she instantly felt suffocated, her face immediately clouded over.
Qin Jinhuan had learned about Liu Xiaofan’s relationship with Zhou Peng from Rong Jian. At this moment, he mistakenly thought that Mu Yu had directed her anger at Liu Xiaofan instead of Zhou Peng, so he stared at Liu Xiaofan coldly. Their expressions frightened Liu Xiaofan, who was unaware of the truth. A thin sheen of sweat instantly covered his forehead as he shot a glance at Rong Jian to ask for help in a panic.
However, it was apparent that Rong Jian had misunderstood Mu Yu as Qin Jinhuan did. Just as Liu Xiaofan was about to explain himself, Mu Yu spoke first. “I’m a little hungry, Huan.”
Qin Jinhuan got up at once. “What would you like to eat?”
“I want to eat plain noodles. Can you prepare a bowl of that at Ying’s place before bringing it over? The noodles outside are too oily.”
Qin Jinhuan was surprised at once since he didn’t expect her to make such a request. Even though he was suspicious, he nevertheless got up and left the ward timely.
Mu Yu then turned to look at Rong Jian and asked him which hospital Zhou Peng was staying at. When she learned that he was hospitalized in Fraternity Hospital as well, she immediately pleaded with him to check on Zhou Peng’s injuries. “What Zhou Peng did was unacceptable, but it was even more wrong of Huan to hurt him. It’s all because of us that this happened, so it’ll have a bad impact on us if this incident is spread around and mistaken for a case of police brutality by those unaware of the truth—”
Liu Xiaofan hurriedly interrupted, “Please don’t worry, Doctor Mu. I guarantee you that this matter wouldn’t be spread around, so it won’t affect you and Chief Rong—”
However, Mu Yu waved her hand and signaled him to stop talking. Then, she turned to look at Rong Jian again before saying, “Chief Rong, I won’t rest easy until you go visit him in person.”
Rong Jian was smart enough to realize that Mu Yu wanted to have a word with Liu Xiaofan in private, so he immediately got up and left the ward without saying another word.
At the moment, Liu Xiaofan and Mu Yu were the only ones left in the ward. After wiping his sweat away, Liu Xiaofan sincerely apologized again, “I’m really sorry, Doctor Mu. Please let me apologize on my cousin’s—”
Mu Yu didn’t care about this, though. She interrupted him by asking, “Were you, Officer Fan, and Officer Yan in charge of Dong Wanqing’s case from start to finish?”
Liu Xiaofan didn’t expect that Mu Yu had sent Qin Jinhuan and Rong Jian away to ask him about this. A hint of panic unconsciously flashed across his eyes when he saw how grave she looked, but he regained his composure soon afterward and asked on purpose, “Are you talking about her funeral? Indeed, the three of us—”
“I’m talking about the car accident that caused my miscarriage. Was it really Dong Wanqing who single-handedly planned the car accident and tried to shift the blame onto Yin Anran in vain?”
Liu Xiaofan had prepared himself, so he lowered his eyes and replied, “Yes.”
“Please tell me the truth, Officer Liu!”
Mu Yu’s suddenly raised voice caused a corner of Liu Xiaofan’s mouth to twitch. Still, when he spoke again, he repeated, “Yes.” His eyes flickered somewhat, though.
Mu Yu questioned with a stern look in her eyes, “Just what has Qin Jinhuan promised you guys to make you breach the oath you’ve taken upon joining the police force and lie against your conscience? Dong Wanqing died in vain because of your selfish desires. All of you have witnessed her tragic death. Do you all really not suffer from nightmares when sleeping at night? Don’t you feel a prick of conscience?”
The series of questions hit Liu Xiaofan like a bolt from the blue, causing his ears to buzz while making him feel dizzy. His face was so deathly pale that even his lips lost all of their color. In an instant, shame and regret filled his seemingly calm eyes. He opened his mouth, but after a long time, he couldn’t say a word to defend himself.
When Liu Xiaofan had agreed to help Qin Jinhuan back then, he never expected that Dong Wanqing would die in vain because of this. Ever since she died, he never had a good night’s sleep. Every night when he lay in bed, he would see Dong Wanqing’s resentful-looking face once he closed his eyes.
“Let go of me!”
“Don’t let yourself despair! You’re still so young! You still have a long future ahead of you!”
“Stop being a hypocrite! Would I have come to such a miserable end if you guys hadn’t colluded with Qin Jinhuan? You’re not sincere at all about risking your life to save me; you’re doing so to make some political capital for your future, aren’t you? Hmm! I won’t let you have your way!”
“No, that’s not the case! I really want to save you! Trust me!”
“Save me? Why? To send me to jail and let me suffer a fate worse than death?”
“No, I’m not! In any case, I’ll do everything I can to help you and protect you! Please trust me, all right?”
“Are you feeling guilty? Are you filled with remorse? Do you think you can make up for your mistakes without your conscience pricking you now that you’ve saved me? Don’t you know that the harm you’ve done to me is permanent and irremediable? You guys are the ones who caused my wrongful death, so you’ll be scourged by your conscience and live in cursed nightmares for the rest of your lives! I hate you! I hate you!”
That was the conversation Dong Wanqing had with him before she died. After finishing her speech, she bit him, kicked at him, scratched him, and flailed around to force him to let go of her. Just when his colleagues were about to pull them up to a place within their reach, he lost all his strength and could no longer hold on. As a result, he could only watch as she fell to her death. Indeed, the resentful expression she left him and the words ‘I hate you’ that she kept repeating while falling to her death had become a part of his nightmare. In fact, he was afraid that he might not be able to overcome the nightmare for life.
Liu Xiaofan’s dejected demeanor pricked Mu Yu deeply. In reality, she had always been skeptical about what was mentioned in the anonymous text message; it mentioned that Qin Jinhuan had shielded Yin Anran, who had perpetrated the car accident but shifted the blame onto Dong Wanqing instead. She questioned Liu Xiaofan mainly to sound him out, but she didn’t expect to find out the truth from him.
She couldn’t put her awful feelings at the moment into words, nor did she know what sort of actions she should take to face the man she loved most as he had deceived her. At this point, she didn’t even dare to believe that his feelings for her were sincere. No man could forgive someone who had murdered his own flesh and blood—that was unless this man didn’t love his and the woman’s child, or unless he cared more about the murderer! He cares more about the murderer… Murderer… she thought to herself.
At this moment, Liu Xiaofan had snapped out of his jumbled thoughts and realized the seriousness of the issue. To remedy the situation, he hurriedly said, “Doctor Mu, judging from the evidence we have, it was indeed Dong Wanqing who perpetrated the car accident, and nobody else was involved. The case file has been sealed, so you may ask Director Gu for the case file if you don’t believe me. There are detailed records on it.”
Mu Yu raised her eyes expressionlessly.
Liu Xiaofan averted his eyes in time and consoled her in embarrassment, “Doctor Mu, this matter has been over for a long time, so one may say that the dust has settled. Actually, it’s meaningless for you to get to the bottom of the matter, so why don’t you get over it?”
“The dust has settled?” Mu Yu sneered. “I can only say that the person who died unjustly is already dead, but the person who shouldn’t have been alive is still alive and kicking!”
“Doctor Mu…”
Mu Yu noticed the timidity and fear in the depths of Liu Xiaofan’s eyes. After a moment’s pause, she heaved a long sigh and commented in earnest, “One should always keep their original intentions in mind. That may sound easy, but it’s hard to do.”
Since he knew what Mu Yu meant, Liu Xiaofan looked very ashamed. He wanted to say something, but he hesitated.
Just then, Mu Yu said, “If this matter is brought to light, many people will be implicated, and both the Qing Tian Group’s growth and the Qin Family’s reputation will be affected. I don’t want to make an issue out of this either. Moreover, you didn’t tell me anything, so you don’t have to be so nervous.”
Liu Xiaofan didn’t expect her to say so. However, he was somewhat relieved when he heard how helpless she sounded.
Mu Yu then continued, “I hope that no one else will die in vain like Dong Wanqing in the cases you’re in charge of; I also hope that everyone can do their job without acting against their conscience.”
After Dong Wanqing died, Liu Xiaofan had sworn in front of her grave that he would definitely be honest and kind in the future, so he was touched again by Mu Yu’s words. Even so, he didn’t say anything. After looking up with a long sigh, he gave Mu Yu a solemn nod, took a step back, and bowed to her. Then, he turned around and walked out of the ward with heavy steps.
Right now, Mu Yu was the only person left in the spacious ward. After staring at the tightly closed door of the ward in a daze for a long time, she reached for her cell phone on the bedside table and opened her list of contacts. Then, she once again dialed the phone number from which the anonymous text message had been sent to her. When she heard the voice on the other end saying that the phone number was unavailable, she knew she could never get through to this phone number, so she immediately hung up. After finding the clothes she had previously worn in the drawer, she changed out of the hospital gown in the bathroom. Then, she walked out of the ward with her cell phone and told Bian Zijun, who had been guarding the ward, that she wanted to go to the villa to look for Qin Jinhuan.
After Bian Zijun accompanied her to the villa’s entrance, she lied that she had left her cell phone in the ward and asked him to get it for her. But instead of entering the villa, she immediately left Fraternity Hospital after he left.
