My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 216
Chapter 216 A Fever
While the weather outside was biting cold, it was cosy and warm indoor. The television was broadcasting some random series, and soft music could be heard playing from the radio.
Meanwhile, Mu Yu was lying on the bed chatting with Jiang Wenwen over the phone using headphones, her eyes closed.
“Young Master Qin attended culinary lessons for your sake just because of that piece of paper?” Green with envy, Jiang Wenwen could hardly believe what she had heard on the other end of the line. “He’s such a busy man, and yet he is so attentive to you. I’m really touched!”
“There’s nothing to be touched about. The food was not that tasty anyway, and its appearance was unattractive. I barely took a few bites,” Mu Yu criticized casually. Nevertheless, the reflection of her beaming face could be seen from the phone screen.
“Hey, how could you say that? What an ungrateful woman.” Unaware of Mu Yu’s true expression, Jiang Wenwen disgustedly took up the cudgels for Qin Jinhuan. “If Zeyu was willing to cook for me, I would finish the food even if they were burnt.”
“Ha! What if you die from food poisoning?”
“I would have died without regrets!”
Unconvinced, Mu Yu commented, “You’ll surely not think this way when you are on your last legs. How precious our lives are! How could you think of dying so easily?”
“Sigh, why did Young Master Qin get himself such an ignorant woman? I feel so sorry for him.”
“There’s nothing about him to feel sorry for.” Mu Yu snorted. “If he was genuinely nice to me, he would not have ditched me to go meet Yin Anran when I was heavily sick.”
“That’s because Yin Anran got into a car accident! You are well aware of the episode between Young Master Qin and his sister, aren’t you? Yet, he still makes time for romantic gestures despite his hectic schedule. You should be more understanding! Moreover, he apologized to you. He didn’t kick up a fuss when you wilfully hung up his call, and he even bought you supper. What more do you expect from a dignified chairman of a company when he has already done so much to compromise? Mind you, your wilfulness might just cause him to turn toward Yin Anran. By then, don’t blame me for not reminding you!”
Bombarded by Jiang Wenwen’s sputtering lecture, Mu Yu had to turn down the volume of the headphone to prevent damage to her eardrums.
Though her stomach ache had been relieved, Mu Yu was still upset about Qin Jinhuan going to meet Yin Anran last night. Because Grandpa was next to her every time he called, she couldn’t give him a lecture over the phone and could only make excuses to not answer his call.
Qin Jinhuan reckoned that Mu Yu would not pick up his call, so just before dinner, he sent her a message informing her that he had to entertain clients that night and would not be coming home for dinner. Besides, he asked her to have something light because he was going to buy her supper. Mu Yu’s anger had mostly subsided after ignoring Qin Jinhuan for the day, but she still did not reply to the message. Nevertheless, she only ate a little during dinner, and she lied to Grandpa that she had some snacks beforehand when he asked.
After dinner, Mu Yu went right back into her room. Knowing that Qin Jinhuan would not arrive home that early, she called her best friend for a chat as she was bored. She first complained to her friend about Qin Jinhuan’s offense, then briefly talked about the surprise that Qin Jinhuan had planned for her toward the end.
Although the volume of the call had been lowered down, the voice of her best friend attempting to defend Qin Jinhuan could still be heard incessantly. Helplessly, Mu Yu interrupted the conversation, “All he did was create a few opportunities for you and Zeyu to spend time alone with each other. You don’t have to defend him so earnestly just because of that.”
“Nonsense!” Jiang Wenwen finally lowered her voice. “That’s not the reason I’m defending Young Master Qin. I’m doing it for your—.”
“Hey, he’s calling me!”
“Who? Young Master Qin? Quickly hang up and answer his call!”
“Why should I hang up your call?”
“I’ll do it if you don’t.”
“Fine, I’ll answer it!” Mu Yu hastily halted her best friend. “It must be some trivial matter for him to call me at this hour. I’m sure he’s just going to ask what I would like to have for supper.”
“Then go ahead and tell him!”
“He already knows what I like to eat and is just using this as an excuse to call me.”
“Stop being willful and pick up his call. I’m going to hang up.”
“Nah, he has already hung up. Let’s continue with our chat.” Mu Yu was not concerned at all, and she changed her posture to lie down comfortably.
“Miss Mu, things won’t work out if you continue being this willful! Men have limited tolerance toward women. You shouldn’t—”
“Alright, alright. I know what to do. Let’s not talk about me anymore and talk about you and Zeyu instead.” Mu Yu laughed and changed the topic. “How are things between the both of you? Did you manage to grasp the opportunity Huan has created for both of you to spend time alone with each other?”
Jiang Wenwen, who was fervently defending Qin Jinhuan at first, let out a deep sigh upon hearing Mu Yu’s question.
“Please don’t tell me that nothing happened!” Obviously, Mu Yu was slightly disappointed.
“Zeyu is rather lukewarm toward me, and I can’t tell what’s in his mind. Perhaps he has not let go of Director Rong yet.”
“But Ying has already rejected him firmly.”
“Even though Director Rong has rejected him, it is up to him to let things go. There is no conflict between these two things.” There was a tinge of distress in Jiang Wenwen’s voice. “Director Rong is beautiful, talented, kind, courteous… and she is from a decent family. I can’t hold a candle to her. No wonder Zeyu can’t get her off his mind and has barely shown interest in me.”
Heart-stricken, Mu Yu quickly comforted her, “Besides family background, you’re almost as good as her!”
“You don’t have to console me. I might not have any other strength, but at least I know where I stand.” Jiang Wenwen took a deep breath, and was bucked up thereafter as if she was comforting herself. “Don’t worry. I won’t give up pursuing Zeyu!”
Mu Yu couldn’t help but sigh too. “Seems like it’s just nonsense to say that it’s a piece of cake for a female to court a male.”
“It differs from case to case. Yin Anran spent much more effort in courting Young Master Qin compared to me courting Zeyu, but it was to no avail either.” Realizing that she might had touched a sore spot, Jiang Wenwen quickly changed the topic and giggled, “You’re moving out tomorrow morning, right? I have no class at that time so I’ll come over to help out.”
“Yes, we’ll move early in the morning tomorrow. Anyway, we’ve hired a moving company, so you don’t have to come over.”
“Sigh, I don’t understand why Mr. and Mrs. Mu would want to move back to the slum when they have a decent bungalow.”
“They think the bungalow is desolate. Though we have neighbors, there’s nothing much that they can talk about. My dad even has to travel to the mahjong center miles away when he wants to play mahjong.”
“Aren’t there all kinds of entertainment facilities in your neighborhood? I reckon there’s a mahjong center too.”
“There is, but those players are out of my parents’ league—their pot could easily amount to my parents’ salary for a few months.”
“Didn’t Young Master Qin give them a large sum of betrothal gifts?”
“It’s not about whether they can afford it, but whether they can accept it. Furthermore, my mom loves square dancing but there’s no one who does that in this neighborhood, and she feels lonely because she doesn’t know anybody from here. She played some music and started dancing in the yard, thinking to attract some neighbors who were interested, but neighbors complained about her and playing music in the yard was banned by the neighborhood management. It drove her mad.”
Feeling amused, Jiang Wenwen chuckled, “Didn’t Mrs. Mu reveal her identity as Young Master Qin’s mother-in-law?”
Mu Yu sighed. “They are always worried that they might embarrass Huan if they do not carry themselves well, so they seldom reveal this piece of information. They even stopped me from confronting the management and the neighbors. I suggested that they move back to their old neighborhood because I saw how aggrieved they were. I think they can only be genuinely happy there because after all, that is their comfort zone. In fact, I miss my old home too.”
“I understand now. I’ll come and help you move tomorrow.”
“Sure, I’ll be here.”
“Alright! Is your phone battery running low? I think I heard a notification sound.”
Mu Yu laughed. “You have good hearing—the battery is indeed running low. Let’s continue chatting as long as we can until it dies. Why don’t we think of a way to help you get Zeyu?”
Jiang Wenwen sighed. “Do you think there’s still hope between Zeyu and I?”
“Of course! He would have rejected you long ago if he didn’t have even a tiny bit of feelings for you. There’s still hope as long as he hasn’t rejected you!”
The two ladies had a discussion over the topic until Mu Yu’s phone ran out of battery and automatically switched off. Wistfully, she charged her phone and looked at the clock—it was almost ten p.m. Feeling hungry, she reckoned Qin Jinhuan should be arriving home soon. She stretched, snuggled into the blanket and watched the television while waiting for the delivery of her delicious supper.
Never in Mu Yu’s wildest dreams did she imagine that Qin Jinhuan, who was supposed to be buying her supper, would be sitting next to Yin Anran’s bed in her room now. With a complicated expression on his face, Qin Jinhuan stared at Yin Anran who was lying in bed with her face flushed.
“Jinhuan, can you stay here tonight?” With tears welled up in her eyes, Yin Anran stared at him piteously.
“Anran…”
“Jinhuan, please don’t go! I’m so afraid!” Lifting up the blanket, Yin Anran suddenly sprang up and cuddled him. She moaned and flirted, “Jinhuan, do you think I’ll die? I’m so afraid!”
At that moment, Yin Anran was only wearing a thin satin sleepwear without a bra. If Qin Jinhuan pushed her away and lowered his head, he would definitely see her pink nipples which were greatly seductive. The pair of nipples gently swayed along with her body movement, and her intention of seducing Qin Jinhuan was beyond doubt.
“Stop talking nonsense. It’s just a fever and people rarely die from fevers.” He gently pushed her feverish body away. To her disappointment, instead of lowering his head, he took the blanket to cover her and laid her down in bed.
As soon as she lay down, her body trembled. Shivering, she purred, “Jinhuan, it’s so cold.”
“Still feeling cold? I’ll turn up the heater.”
The doctor had said her fever was a sequel of the shock from the car accident, and he had exhorted the family members to pay extra attention to her during the healing process. This was because although she had taken some medicine, her fever would not be relieved so soon.
Innocently, Yin Anran stared at Qin Jinhuan with puppy dog eyes. She then bit her lips and implored weakly, “Jinhuan, can you cuddle me for a while as I sleep? Anjing used to cuddle me too whenever I fell sick.”
Acting innocent and bringing up Anjing were the ultimate skills she used to get her way with Qin Jinhuan.
Qin Jinhuan turned around and stared at her resolutely, and a tinge of peculiarity could be seen in his eyes.
Sensing the change in his expression, Yin Anran was secretly delighted. The specially made incense I put in the room must be working!
Come on, Jinhuan! Come to me!
Yin Anran silently screamed in her heart.
She was confident she could capture Qin Jinhuan’s heart as long as he joined her under the blanket. After all, her fever was fake, and the real motive was to conquer Qin Jinhuan, which she had been plotting for a long time.
With her eyes slightly closed, she stretched her arms out and softly moaned, “Jinhuan…”
Originally hesitating, Qin Jinhuan suddenly took a deep breath and walked briskly to the side of the bed. With his body leaning slightly forward, he swiftly seized her hand with one hand and grabbed the blanket with the other.
