My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 200
Chapter 200 Feng Qiqi
Mu Yu perked up her ears the moment she heard Qiqi’s name. “I’ll go there right now!” Rong Jian ended the call as he turned around.
Bang!
“Watch out, Chief Rong!”
Rong Jian hissed in pain. He had turned around while lifting his leg up a little too quickly, so his right ankle slammed against the corner of the table heavily. The immense pain got him to instinctively lift his leg above the ground, and he nearly lost his balance as he stood on one leg.
“Be careful!” Zhang Yiming stepped forward to hold onto him while Rong Jian supported himself by grabbing onto the table at the same time. “Are you okay, Chief Rong?” Mu Yu asked as she glanced at his leg anxiously. “I’m fine.” However, the chief’s reassuring words were betrayed by the pained expression he wore on his face. He gently pushed Zhang Yiming aside and attempted to place his right foot on the ground. Right when his foot landed, he took a deep breath and lifted it back up.
Zhang Yiming nervously reached out to help him again while ordering Mu Yu, “Get a chair for him to sit on—I’ll take a look at his injury.”
“Oh, okay.” Mu Yu quickly brought a chair over to the back of where Rong Jian was standing. “He didn’t hurt his bones, did he?” she asked concernedly. Rong Jian, who had just sat down, gritted his teeth as he shook his head and said, “It’s not that bad; I think it’s just a slight sprain.”
As the chief spoke, Zhang Yiming had already rolled the bottom of his pants up and was gently pressing onto his ankle. Noticing that Rong Jian hissed and groaned in pain, Mu Yu worriedly said, “Don’t go too hard on him!”
“It’s fine—I know what I’m doing,” Zhang Yiming said with a smile as he continued massaging the ankle. “His bones are fine; it’s just a regular bruise. He should be fine after applying some ointment for a day or two.”
“Okay. I’ll go get you some ointment, Chief Rong.”
“Yu!” he shouted to stop her. “You don’t have to get me ointment; I want you to go to the hospital with me first.”
“Do you want to do an X-ray?”
“No—Qiqi’s in the hospital.”
“Ah! What happened to her?!”
“She injured her arm while she was having a snowball fight with her classmates in the field. The teacher sent her to the hospital, and they need a family member to deal with her matters now. It’s just her and her sister at home, but she doesn’t actually know about her sister’s situation; I don’t want her to find out about it just yet.”
“Okay, I got it. I can go visit her at the hospital since your leg is injured.”
“I can walk!” He insisted as he took a few painful steps forward. “But I can’t drive, so we’ll have to take a cab.”
“Are you sure you can walk?” she asked worriedly.
“Yes, let’s go.”
“Um, Chief Rong!” Zhang Yiming called out to him. He then said, “Since the work at the forensic lab is pretty much done, why don’t I be your driver for today?”
“Thank you, but I’d rather not trouble you.”
“Don’t you trust my driving abilities? I do have seven years’ worth of driving experience.”
Realizing how hard it’d be for Rong Jian to travel the lengthy distance from the forensic lab to the entrance of the Bureau, Mu Yu quickly added, “Chief Rong, since Doctor Zhang is being so kind, we should let him send us over. We can even discuss the case while we’re on the way there.” Rong Jian considered this for a while and no longer rejected the idea of it. Then, he handed his keys over to Zhang Yiming as he said, “It’s the black Land Rover parked at the eastern end of Parking Lot A.”
“You have such a nice car! It seems like your unit enjoys great welfare benefits, eh?” Zhang Yiming was clearly shocked. However, he wasn’t aware of Rong Jian’s family background, nor had he ever seen Qin Jinhuan, Wen Zeyu and Rong Ying’s rides. Therefore, he had no idea how lowkey Rong Jian’s car was already considered.
Rong Jian had expected such a surprised reaction, but he didn’t bother to clarify anything as he simply smiled and said, “We’ll wait for you at the hall.”
“Okay,” Zhang Yiming said as he trotted off happily. He mumbled, “It’s a rare chance for me to be able to drive such a nice car, so I’ll get to have some great driving fun today.”
“Let’s go.” Rong Jian landed gently on his right foot as he began walking. “Let me help you,” said Mu Yu as she quickly rushed forward.
“No, no—it’s fine, Yu. You should take care of yourself.” Rong Jian gently brushed her off with an apologetic look as he continued, “I shouldn’t even have asked for you to come over since you’re pregnant, but Rubing…”
“Actually, Chief Rong…” Mu Yu looked around her surroundings and lowered her voice before she continued, “I’m not actually pregnant.”
“What?! You aren’t…”
“Shh. Apart from you, only Huan, Ying, Lei Zhi and I know about this right now.”
Rong Jian was shocked to hear this. “Why did you guys agree to lie to Grandpa together? Especially now when Grandpa’s condition is…”
“No, no—Grandpa’s fine now, and we didn’t lie to him on purpose. It’s just that there was some mistake with the first test and Lei Zhi thought I was pregnant, so he passed Grandpa the wrong message. Furthermore, I’m sure you know how much Grandpa has longed to have a great-grandchild. Coupled with that and the rise in his blood pressure over the past two days, he must be very worried. With all the things happening at the company, I’m afraid that his heart won’t be able to take it if I tell him that I’m not pregnant at a time like this.” Mu Yu then paused to remind the chief, “You have to keep this a secret between us! Even Zeyu doesn’t know about this yet.”
“In that case, why are you telling me about this?”
Mu Yu responded honestly as she said, “I’m afraid that you might stop me from being part of the case otherwise; I want to help both Madam Feng and Huan.”
Rong Jian let out a soft sigh as he had heard of the rumors spreading within the Qing Tian Group as well. “I want this case to be solved as quickly as possible too. It isn’t just for Rubing and Huan, but also for the sake of societal stability.”
“Let’s do our best, Chief Rong.”
“Alright.”
“Let’s go.”
“Yeah.” Rong Jian endured the pain in his leg as he limped his way to the hall. Mu Yu heaved a sigh under her breath as her heart ached to see how the man was trying his best to quicken his pace. Meanwhile, Zhang Yiming had already brought Rong Jian’s car over by the time they both arrived at the main hall. When the two of them got into the car, Zhang Yiming voiced an apology as he began to drive out of the building. “I hope there’s no misunderstanding between us, Chief Rong. I didn’t mean anything else when I said that your unit has greater welfare benefits; I was simply praising your car. Please don’t take my words to heart.”
Fortunately, Rong Jian had never taken his words to heart, and he guessed that Zhang Yiming had probably approached Nie Yunkang to ask about his identity and status. The chief gave him a grin, indicating that he didn’t mind it at all. He then recalled that they were on the way to meet Qiqi and quickly reminded the pair, “If Qiqi asks about her sister later, you guys should just remain silent—let me do the talking.”
“Okay,” Mu Yu and Zhang Yiming replied simultaneously.
“How many siblings does Doctor Feng have?” Zhang Yiming continued asking.
This time, Mu Yu was the one who replied to him first. “Her parents passed away at a young age, so her younger sister—Qiqi, the one we’re on the way to meet now—is the only family member she has left.”
“Oh.” Zhang Yiming seemed to have thought of something as he continued, “Doctor Feng had multiple arguments with the victim. In other words, she has the motive to kill; as a forensic doctor, she has the skills to commit a crime since she has been in this line of work for a long time. Like the murderer, she matches the profile of someone who’s trying to confuse us with her tactics; someone saw her at the nearby construction site just before the murder happened, so she doesn’t have an alibi. To put it simply, she had the time to commit the crime; the bloody words left at the crime scene showed the first few strokes of her name, and the victim even called her right before he died. We also have to consider the fact that she isn’t in conflict with the Qing Tian company and has never really interacted much with the past two victims even though they were all workers of that company. Additionally, she had taken the initiative to participate in the police investigation for the past two cases; the conclusion seems pretty clear to me now.”
“Are you suspecting that Madam Feng used her understanding of the past two cases and her own professional skills to imitate the previous crimes?” Mu Yu then proposed a different viewpoint as she said, “In my opinion, an experienced forensic doctor who has been trained and prepared to confront anything at the front line wouldn’t just try to misguide the police by ensuring that no clues have been left behind; she would also arrange it in such a way that she’d have a perfect alibi in order to cut all ties she has with that crime.”
“I’m not done with explaining my point just yet.” Zhang Yiming turned around and grinned right after he stopped the car at a red light. “I think the key to the solution for this case lies between Doctor Feng and Li Jianyu’s arguments. Right now, all the evidence seems to be pointing toward Doctor Feng, and she might just get arrested for committing murder. However, she’d rather face this risk of getting labeled as a killer than reveal the arguments between her and Li Jianyun. Both of them are single, so it’s not as if they’re doing something immoral even if they were seeing each other. It has to be about something that matters more than her own life…”
The traffic light turned green, and Zhang Yiming returned his gaze to the road as he stepped on the gas while saying, “Back to our previous topic—her sister, Qiqi. The kid is in middle school, so she’s probably 13 or 14 years old. How old is Madam Feng?”
“Thirty,” Rong Jian said.
“Since the two sisters lost their parents at a young age, they must’ve really depended on one another. However, considering the fact that they have a 16 to 17-year age gap, I don’t think Doctor Feng is just a sister to Qiqi; she’s also a mother. On the other hand, Doctor Feng probably developed a form of motherly love for her younger sister that surpasses the love of just a regular sibling. I don’t think words can ever describe the greatness of motherly love.”
“However, if Madam Feng really did this for the sake of protecting Qiqi, the latter must have encountered something that we have no idea about. But…” Mu Yu glanced toward Rong Jian and continued, “Although I haven’t had any proper, face-to-face interactions with Qiqi, I recall you talking about how she’d come up with all sorts of mischievous tricks just to match you and Madam Feng with one another. Based on that, she sounds like a naughty and fun little girl to me.”
“Yes, she isn’t just naughty; she also has a great sense of righteousness.” Rong Jian proceeded to explain, “The reason why she injured her arm today wasn’t simply because she was engaged in a snowball fight with her classmates; some of the boys had used snowballs to bully the girls, and she made a move to lecture these boys because she couldn’t bear to see them doing so. Her arm got injured only because the boys had shoved her down onto the ground. She’s a mature girl; her results are great; she’s popular at school; great at speaking; well-loved by both her teachers and peers—nothing makes her seem like a child who has had any traumatic experiences.” Rong Jian seemed to become more talkative at the mention of Feng Qiqi. “She’s extremely good at taking care of herself too. Rubing often stays out late because of work, so Qiqi learned how to purchase her own groceries, make herself dinner, wash her clothes, clean the house up and so on. Rubing never had to worry about her; conversely, she’d often get anxious about how Rubing might not be able to find a partner, as she’d comment on how Rubing spends too much time cooped up at home, how she’s bad at dressing up, and her bad temper. Whenever they have a day off, she would force Rubing to go out for a shopping spree, a hairdo or a facial. Otherwise, she’d get Rubing to participate in all sorts of social networking events hosted by matchmaking companies—the two of them even had fights about this. The young girl observed me for a long time after she found out that I was interested in Rubing, and she eventually decided that I would be a suitable husband for her sister. From then onward, she would often find reasons to invite me over, and she’d try her best to create opportunities for Rubing and me. Nonetheless, Rubing isn’t interested…” Rong Jian paused and flashed a bitter smile before he continued, “She would give Qiqi stern warnings once she realized what Qiqi was trying to do. After a few pointless warnings, she even beat Qiqi up once. The two of them didn’t even speak to each other for a month after that.”
“How could she hit Qiqi for something like that? Qiqi was merely doing so because she cared about her sister!” Mu Yu exclaimed in disbelief.
With a smile on his face, Zhang Yiming then piped up, “Didn’t Chief Rong say that Doctor Feng wasn’t interested in him? She already has to face a man that she’s uninterested in at work only to see him again once she’s back home; is there anything worse than that? Um… don’t take it to heart, Chief Rong—I’m simply judging the situation as it is.”
“It’s fine if she doesn’t like him, but can’t they just be friends? Why does she have to reject him in such a heartless manner?”
“Perhaps… F*ck! It’s a red light!”
Screech!
“Watch out!”
“Oh my God!” The car in front was about to collide into theirs, and Mu Yu was so afraid that she simply squeezed her eyes shut.
