My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 199
Chapter 199 A Special Relationship
On the other end, Mu Yu still rushed back to the Bureau after Rong Jian had called for an emergency meeting despite being worried about Qin Jinhuan. This was also partially because Mu Yu knew that she wouldn’t be of much help to Qin Jinhuan even if she followed him along to Chengbei Factory, whereas she might actually be able to help Rong Jian if she returned to the Bureau.
On her way there, she phoned Qin Jinhuan once again, and the call finally went through this time. She felt herself tensing up upon hearing the noise on the other end of the call, so she immediately asked if he had managed to get everything sorted and settled after calming the workers down. “You heard about it?” he asked.
“Yeah, I just left your company. Has everything been settled?”
“Yes.” The commotion on the other end of the call died down along with the sound of his faint breathing. Soon enough, there was no noise at all—it was clear that Qin Jinhuan had speedily walked off to a quieter environment.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure. You didn’t go out alone, did you?”
“Actually, I did sneak out. I was afraid that Grandpa wouldn’t let me out if he saw me.”
“Are you at the entrance of the company? I can get Zijun to…”
“It’s fine. I’m already in a cab,” she said, cutting him off. “I’m on the way back to the Bureau as Chief Rong has just informed us of new developments in the case.”
“What sort of new developments?”
“Chief Rong wasn’t specific about it, but I’m guessing it has something to do with Madam Feng,” she said with a worried sigh.
The other end of the call was silent for a few moments before he said, “In that case, you should head over. Take care, and I’ll pick you up later.”
“Alright. The weather’s cold and the roads are slippery; you should take care of yourself too. Also, I’m sure that someone in your company is spreading those rumors on purpose. You should get them checked.”
“Okay. Remember to give Grandpa a call.”
“What for?”
“He’ll be worried once he realizes that you aren’t home.”
“Oh, got it. I’ll call him right now.”
The two of them continued reminding each other to stay warm and take care for a while longer before they ended the call. Following that, Mu Yu dialed the landline. Yu Zhongguang was the one who picked it up, and he immediately sighed once he heard that she was asking for Qin Xiaozhi. “The boss wasn’t feeling too well, so he’s resting in his room now.”
“What?! What happened to Grandpa?” she exclaimed worriedly. He didn’t lose his temper because I sneaked out, right?
“The Old Master insisted on bringing Young Master Xi—no, Miss Xi—back home, but both her and the boss rejected this idea. They got into a fight, and Boss said his chest felt a little heavy after that, so he returned to his room.”
“How dare they even ask Xi to return?!” Mu Yu’s voice was furious as she continued, “She didn’t get brought back, did she?”
She thought Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun had merely brought Dong Wanqing over to visit Grandpa and Xi, but she hadn’t expected for them to create trouble!
“No. She never wanted to go back from the start, and she further insisted on staying after she saw that Boss seemed rather unwell.”
“Alright. That’s good, then.” Mu Yu felt relieved as she continued, “Have they left?”
“Yes. They left once Boss said that he wasn’t feeling well.”
“How is Grandpa’s condition? Did you get Lei Zhi to check on him?”
“Lei Zhi dropped by earlier and persuaded Boss to take his medicine. He’s fine now; he’s all curled up on the tatami mat and talking to Miss Xi. Lei Zhi said that Boss’ physical health is deteriorating as he’s getting older now, so it’s best if he doesn’t get provoked by others. Hopefully, that married couple will stop coming around to disturb him.” Yu Zhongguang’s words made Mu Yu feel both worried and sad.
Grandpa has been longing for a great-grandchild, and he’ll be so disappointed once he finds out that I’m not pregnant! I’m afraid that he might not be able to handle it. “You have to keep it a secret. You can’t let him find out about this!” A voice in her mind cautioned her to do so, and she subconsciously nodded her head.
Upon realizing Mu Yu’s silence, Yu Zhongguang figured that she was worried about the old man and hurriedly attempted to comfort her, “Don’t you worry, young mistress; we’ll do our best to take care of Boss. You’re pregnant now, and it’ll be bad for you to get all worked up. Wait a minute! Aren’t you in your room?”
“Uh, I went out.”
“What? You went out? When did you go out?! Boss thought that you were resting in your room, and he even reminded us to walk around and do our work in silence because he didn’t want us to disturb your rest. Ah! Why didn’t you inform me before leaving the house?! It’s freezing outside; it’s dangerous for a pregnant woman like you to be going out all by yourself! If you knock or bump into something, Boss is going to…” He stopped and made a spitting sound before he continued, “No, it was bad of me to say that! I…”
“I’m fine, Uncle Zhongguang—I’m perfectly fine! Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of myself,” Mu Yu said with a laugh.
“Where are you right now? I’ll get Qi Hao to…”
“No, no—it’s fine as I’m already at the Bureau. Huan will come over to pick me up later.”
“Oh. You have to be especially careful then; you can’t let anything happen to you as you’re now the endangered species—a national treasure—of the family!”
“Don’t worry; everything will be just fine.” Mu Yu chuckled and continued, “Uncle Zhongguang, if Grandpa tries to look for me later, please help me to tell him where I am. Don’t say that I went out alone, though. You can just say that Huan sent someone to pick me up, or that I’m with Huan right now—as long as Grandpa doesn’t get worried.”
“Okay.” However, Yu Zhongguang was clearly worried himself as he continued, “You should stay in the Bureau once you arrive; don’t go walking around outside.”
“Alright. Thanks for the reminder, Uncle Zhongguang.” Seeing that the car had arrived at the entrance of the Bureau, Mu Yu quickly asked for him to take good care of her Grandpa before she ended the call. After paying for the cab, she walked hurriedly toward the main hall while she gave Rong Jian a call to ask where he was. She then jogged to the forensic lab once she found out that he was there.
“What’s the situation, Chief Rong?” She didn’t even stop to take a breath before she rushed over to Rong Jian, who was standing in front of the blackboard. “The reports for the physical evidence are all out,” he said while pointing toward the pictures on the blackboard. “It has been confirmed that all ten fingers were left on site without any missing parts, and it has been proven to be the victim, Li Jianyun’s. All traces of blood found at the crime scene belonged to him, including the blood used for the writings. Just like the previous two cases, the site was well-cleaned, and the murderer didn’t leave any hint of evidence behind. Comparisons confirmed that the packaging tape used by the murderer to tie the victim up is also identical to the past two cases.”
Mu Yu then interrupted and asked, “Are you saying that all three of these cases can be investigated together?”
“I think we might be jumping to conclusions if we simply associate all three of these cases together just because of the type of packaging tape used.” Mu Yu turned around as she heard the unfamiliar voice coming from behind her. She flashed a smile when she saw that it was the temporary forensic doctor who had been brought in to help out with the investigation. Zhang Yiming returned her smile before he continued explaining, “I’ve checked around for that specific type of packaging tape; it’s pretty common in the market, and most convenience stores sell it as well.”
Stunned, Mu Yu asked, “You think that the packaging tape is a mere coincidence?”
“It’s hard to say. I simply think that it’s a little impetuous of us to determine that all three cases are by the same murderer just because of the same packaging tape used, but I don’t deny its possibility.” He then pointed toward the documents on the table and said, “I went through the files for the past two cases last night, and I also looked into how it relates to the third case. Based on my observations, I think it wouldn’t be hard for them if one of our own internal staff members wanted to copy the style of the past two cases, as long as they had been part of the first two investigations…”
Rong Jian’s expression immediately changed as he demanded, “What do you mean by that?!” Mu Yu was just as flustered as she said, “You can’t just casually say such things, Doctor Zhang!”
“Do note that I only said if they wanted to.” Zhang Yiming’s face was serious as he glanced at Rong Jian. “I understand how Doctor Feng has a special place in your heart, and I understand how you, Doctor Mu and the rest of your colleagues feel; I didn’t hope to come to such an undesired conclusion either. I only said those words to express my observations as a bystander, so I hope that you guys won’t mind me. After all, it is likely for your judgement to be biased if you were to analyze the case with your personal feelings involved. Moreover, I heard that Doctor Feng’s access to this case has been limited ever since she refused to clarify the relationship between her and the victim. If all of you continue to be distracted by your personal feelings, I believe that it’ll be of no benefit to her—it might even delay our investigations and waste our time when it’s now the best time to capture the murderer. I’m sure none of you want that to happen.”
Rong Jian stood still and stared at the other man for a few seconds before he solemnly apologized and said, “I’m sorry, I was too…”
“Let’s not talk about these matters first; the most important thing now is to solve the case.” Zhang Yiming generously waved him off before he continued, “If you can trust me, would you like to hear what I think about this?”
“Please go ahead.”
“Thank you.” Zhang Yiming then looked toward the blackboard as he continued to analyze the situation. “Judging by the evidence we have in hand now, Doctor Feng’s situation doesn’t look too good. Firstly, we found a used female underwear in the victim’s house, and it was proven that the underwear was made with the same material as Doctor Feng’s. In other words, that piece of evidence found in the victim’s house might very well belong to her. Assuming that it does belong to Doctor Feng, and considering the fact that the victim had a history of harassing women, there are two possibilities—firstly, the victim and Doctor Feng might have… I’m sorry, Chief Rong; I don’t mean anything, but…”
“I understand; it’s fine. Please do continue.”
“Alright.” With the burden off his chest, Zhang Yiming continued, “Firstly, Doctor Feng might have engaged in sexual intercourse with the victim—they might’ve even been sexual partners or shared some sort of relationship like that. In that case, it would be normal for the underwear to be left behind. However, based on what my cousin has told me about Doctor Feng, I don’t think this is possible. I’m therefore leaning more toward the second possibility, which is that the victim had stolen this underwear. Of course, I have no idea why he’d only steal Doctor Feng’s undergarments and not anyone else’s. Regardless of whether the victim stole it—or if Doctor Feng had left it behind—I believe that this might have caused a fight between the two of them.”
Interrupting again, Mu Yu asked, “The two of them had a fight? Did anyone witness this?”
“Yes,” Rong Jian replied. “A few groups have provided us with some clues for now. This is one of the new developments that I was telling you about.”
“Those people who gave us the leads—did anyone manage to hear the contents of their argument?”
“No. However, all of them agreed that Doctor Feng seemed to have the lower hand in their argument; the witnesses noticed how she lowered her head to walk away.” Zhang Yiming added onto his words and said, “I think the victim might’ve been using something to threaten Doctor Feng, and it might be related to the underwear.”
Right then, Mu Yu recalled how she had overheard Feng Rubing’s phone call. She then said, “It might be related to Feng Qiqi as well, right?”
“Feng Qiqi?” Zhang Yiming was surprised.
“She’s Rubing’s younger sister, and she’s a middle-schooler right now.” Rong Jian explained.
Mu Yu seemed rather anxious as she asked, “Wouldn’t Qiqi know something? Have you spoken to her about Li Jianyun’s incident?”
“I…” Rong Jian’s phone rang at that exact moment. Seeing that it was an unknown number, he paused for a moment before he picked it up. “Rong Jian speaking. Who’s this? Qiqi?”
