My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 297
Chapter 297 Unreadable Intentions
“Why do you think he’s acting strange?” Mu Yu expressed her confusion.
“The way he reacts to Jiang Wenwen’s pregnancy is quite unusual.”
At this point, Mu Yu became even more confused. “Isn’t he treating Wenwen quite well?”
“He…”
“Hey, Huan! Yu!” Just then, a voice came from a distance away, interrupting Qin Jinhuan’s speech.
“It’s Xi! She’s calling for us!” Mu Yu’s face lit up with glee.
Before she could shout in reply, Feng Qiqi’s cheerful voice chimed in from afar, “Yu! Huan! Where are you guys?”
“Hey! Hang in there, guys—” Shang Qi’s voice came after Feng Qiqi’s.
Perhaps the booming echoes were intriguing to them, for they were shouting one after another without waiting for Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan to answer. The tones of their screams became more and more upbeat, and soon enough, the valley was instantly filled with the rhythmic, melodious echoes of their voices.
Mu Yu was influenced by the mood as she cupped her hands around her mouth. She was about to shout back to them when the deep voice of a man rang loudly behind her, “Hello—It’s time to cook—”
“It’s Chief Rong!” Mu Yu happily grabbed Qin Jinhuan’s arm as she exclaimed. She then urged him, “Why don’t you give it a try too?”
“You go ahead.” Qin Jinhuan chuckled and continued walking leisurely.
Mu Yu teased him as she followed behind by saying, “Hey, are you out of energy already?”
At the sound of that, Qin Jinhuan stopped all of a sudden. Mu Yu didn’t realize the man’s sudden halt and crashed into his back.
“Ouch… You…”
He put an arm around her shoulders and said matter-of-factly, “Why don’t we do it again, then?”
“Do what?” she asked, rubbing her nose as she spoke.
He winked at her knowingly in return. “Have sex.”
“You’re crazy, aren’t you?” She rolled her eyes at him.
“Weren’t you the one who said that I was out of energy? I’ll have you know that I’m super energetic right now.”
“Tsk! If that’s the case, you should carry me up the hill instead.”
Qin Jinhuan immediately bent down slightly and said, “Come on up, then.”
She pretended to lean forward like she was actually about to climb onto his back. “I’m really going to do it, then.”
“Sure.”
“I won’t be coming down before we reach the top once I’m on your back!”
“That’s no problem; I like it when you’re on top, anyway.” He intentionally accentuated the words ‘on top’ as his eyes glinted with a hint of naughty mischief in it.
She smiled reproachfully at him before giving his head a poke. “There’re so many good things in the world to think about, but why is your head only filled with lewd thoughts like these?”
“That’s because I’m always thinking about you.”
“Oh, cut it out. All you think about are dirty thoughts like these, so spare me the nonsense.”
Mu Yu pretended to ignore him and walked straight ahead as she shifted her attention toward the amplified conversation between Feng Qiqi, Rong Jian, and the others.
“It’s not dirty to think about being with your wife—it’s the most wonderful thing in the world to think about.” Qin Jinhuan held her hand and proceeded to walk by her side.
However, Mu Yu ignored him and quietly listened to the loud exchanges for a while. Throughout it all, she couldn’t hear Jiang Wenwen’s voice at all; she assumed that it was simply because Jiang Wenwen and Feng Qiqi weren’t close, so the former didn’t feel comfortable responding. Thus, she shrugged off Qin Jinhuan’s hand and turned around to call out to Jiang Wenwen.
However, Jiang Wenwen did not reply to her even after she had called her name three or four times. Mu Yu felt like something was off and turned to meet Qin Jinhuan’s eyes, looking a little nervous. “Could something have happened to Wenwen?”
She knew that Jiang Wenwen usually loved to join in the fun.
“I don’t think so. She’s most probably…”
Before Qin Jinhuan could finish his sentence, Rong Jian’s voice was heard from quite a distance away. “Hey—we’re all here! You guys can go ahead!”
Qin Jinhuan smiled and said, “Didn’t I tell you she’s fine? Let’s not worry about them and carry on.”
“Are pregnant women not allowed to shout?”
“She’s probably just feeling weak.”
“Oh, that’s right. You mentioned earlier that Wen Zeyu’s acting strange. Why do you think so?”
“It’s nothing. Perhaps I was overthinking.”
“What were you overthinking about?” Mu Yu followed up closely. “Do you think Wen Zeyu doesn’t want to have the baby?”
Wen Zeyu had left Qing Tian Group a month ago, and he went to work as the executive director of Hui Ming Group which belonged to his father, Yao Chenhua. However, Mu Yu wasn’t interested in that; she was only concerned about the man’s feelings for Jiang Wenwen. Jiang Wenwen was her best friend, after all. Moreover, she was the one who had set the two of them up, so as her best friend, she felt like she was partly responsible for the wellbeing of their relationship.
“I don’t know. I think he does, though. If Jiang Wenwen wasn’t pregnant with his child, Yao Chenhua wouldn’t have given him all of Hui Ming Group so soon.”
Mu Yu was clouded with worry all of a sudden. “Is Wen Zeyu simply using the baby to gain control of his father’s business that’s rightfully his?”
Yao Chenhua was desperate for a grandchild the same way Qin Xiaozhi longed for a great-grandchild—they were both impatient, and Mu Yu knew that. She was extremely worried that Wen Zeyu only decided to stay together with the pregnant Jiang Wenwen to take over the Yao Family’s business, as well as the possibility that he would then abandon the woman and their child once he achieved his goal. Even though Mu Yu felt that Wen Zeyu wasn’t that kind of person, she couldn’t be sure of it.
After all, it wasn’t unheard of for someone’s personality to change drastically under special circumstances in order to protect themselves or to achieve a certain ambition.
She was worried that Wen Zeyu would eventually undergo such a change one day; if that was the case, the emotional damage Jiang Wenwen would face definitely wouldn’t be a minor one.
Needless to say, Mu Yu didn’t want to see any of that happen.
“You already know that Wen Zeyu doesn’t love her—she knows it as well.” Even at a time like this, Qin Jinhuan decided to speak the truth. He obviously knew what Mu Yu’s thoughts were at the moment.
The underlying meaning of his speech was that there was a possibility that Wen Zeyu might abandon Jiang Wenwen and the baby inside of her one day.
Mu Yu could tell what he meant, and she became moody in an instant.
“Perhaps we’re just overthinking. Anyway, hasn’t Zeyu been treating her quite well these days?” He offered some words of comfort in the nick of time.
She sighed and said, “I don’t think we’re overthinking it. I feel like Wenwen has become quite depressed these days; she doesn’t talk to me as much anymore. I assumed it was because she had been busy with work after the start of the new semester, but now that I think about it, it’s probably due to Zeyu. Also, how could she not tell me about being pregnant after more than two months? It’s such a huge deal—it doesn’t make sense at all! It’s not like her to do something like this.”
“Perhaps she hasn’t decided whether to keep the baby or not; maybe that’s why she didn’t tell you about it.”
“She wouldn’t even need to consider that as long as Zeyu treats her well, though.”
“Zeyu had just gotten over his relationship with Ying not too long ago, so he still needs some time to accept a new woman in his life.”
“He’s the reason you didn’t ask Ying to come hiking with us today, right?”
“Not exactly. Ying is too busy; she might not have time to come even if I invited her, so I didn’t bother asking either.”
“I see. Wait, since Wenwen has been pregnant for more than two months, it seems like this is the result of the time she took the initiative some time ago.”
“Yeah, I think you’re right.”
Mu Yu let out another sigh. “I can’t tell if luck is on her side or not for this to happen.”
“That would depend on her fate.”
“Do you think Zeyu has feelings for Wenwen, even just a little bit?”
“I’m not entirely sure.” When he noticed an obvious sense of worry creeping up Mu Yu’s face again, he immediately consoled her and said, “No matter what, Wen Zeyu will treat her well whether or not he has feelings for her as long as she’s pregnant. That’s because even though he’s the executive director of Hui Ming, Yao Chenhua still holds most of the power over the company as of now. Yao Chenhua already made it clear that he’d transfer a huge portion of the company’s ownership to his grandchild as long as Jiang Wenwen successfully delivers the baby and names him after the Yao Family. By the way, Wen Zeyu has already brought Jiang Wenwen for a check-up—they’re having a baby boy.”
“Do you mean that Wen Zeyu will abandon Wenwen once the baby is out and he gets his hands on the Yao Family’s fortune?!”
“Actually, that’s not what I meant. What I’m trying to say is Jiang Wenwen and Zeyu still have at least seven or eight months together. That’s quite a long period of time, so if Jiang Wenwen can take advantage of these few months and make Zeyu fall for her, all will be well in the end.”
Mu Yu was dejected at the sound of that. “Aren’t pregnant women not supposed to have sex?”
How could she make him fall for her if they can’t even be intimate with each other?
Qin Jinhuan knocked her head playfully as he chuckled. “Who said you’d have to make love to touch a man’s heart?”
She squinted her eyes at him as she pouted. “Am I wrong?”
“There are indeed many men who fall in love after or because of sex, but Zeyu and I are exceptions.” He understood what she meant, so he wrapped his arms around her and explained, “I fell in love with you before your body, darling.”
After a short pause, he then continued, “Zeyu and I are the same—our parent’s marriages were broken by a third party and we lost our mothers at a young age, so we naturally despise women to a certain extent. However, deep inside, we crave a woman as gentle as a mother to be by our side. We don’t fall in love with a woman easily, but once we do, we’ll never be able to take it back. It’s just like how Zeyu loves Ying and how I love you.”
Mu Yu was startled momentarily, and she sighed again when she regained her senses. “Hopefully Wenwen will become the woman that Zeyu loves so dearly.”
“That would depend on her fate.”
“Well, hopefully fate is on her side.” Since they were on the topic of fate, Mu Yu smiled all of a sudden. “Didn’t you use to not believe in any of these things?”
“Isn’t this all your fault?”
“All right, stop it now. It’s getting late, so let’s hurry up. We still have lunch to prepare.”
“Let’s go.” He took her hand in his and picked up the pace with a smile.
I’ll need to have a chat with Wenwen once we get back. Whatever happens, it’s best if she’s mentally prepared so that she can protect herself when the time comes, Mu Yu thought to herself.
When they arrived at the summit, Weng Yun and the others had already pitched a tent on an area with flatter ground, whereas Qin Chengxi and Shang Qi had set up a clay oven by the side and were now arranging the washed vegetables on plates with Feng Qiqi.
“Who’s our chef for the day?” Mu Yu decided to temporarily put away the worries for her best friend and cheerfully headed over to help out.
“I am.” Shang Qi gave the spatula in his hand a wave.
Mu Yu was surprised. “You can cook?!”
“I just learned recently.” Shang Qi turned to Qin Chengxi with a smile. “Wasn’t Grandpa and Huan planning to send Xi abroad before the New Year? I was worried that Xi wouldn’t get used to their food over there, so I had a few chefs give me some intense training. That way, I’ll be able to cook for her when we study together.”
Qiqi praised him immediately and said, “Xi is so lucky to have a boyfriend like Shang Qi, huh?”
Meanwhile, Shang Qi instructed her light-heartedly as he laughed and said, “Hey, little lady, go and get me a bowl.”
“Yes, sir!” Feng Qiqi chuckled and quickly went to get him a bowl.
“You should go and admire the view with Huan, Yu. Xi and I will handle everything here.”
Since she wasn’t able to offer much help, Mu Yu gave him a smile and went over to Qin Jinhuan.
The man was standing by the edge of a gazebo, gazing into the distance. He immediately asked her if she was feeling cold when he noticed her coming up to him.
“The sun is out, so I’m not cold. The sky is so beautiful up here, so the view below must be pretty as well.” Mu Yu gasped in admiration as she took in the clouds above, thinking that he was admiring the view.
He pointed at the sea of clouds in front of them as he smiled. “Beneath these clouds is a quarry, and it’s filled with rocks and boulders. It’s not as beautiful as you think it is.”
“How do you know that?”
“The quarry belongs to the Qing Tian Group.”
“Ah, I see. It must be tough to work in a valley like this.”
“I guess so, but I’ve never been to this quarry myself. That’s right—I have something very important to tell you.”
“What is it?” Mu Yu asked with a smile.
At that moment, her mind hadn’t once lingered on this inconspicuous quarry below them; she had no idea that she would soon be paying it a visit to investigate the fourth murder case.
