My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 295
Chapter 295 The Lost Heart
Qin Jinhuan tucked Mu Yu up in her quilt again. Then, he slowly stood up and walked out of the ward.
Meanwhile, Bian Zijun had been waiting for him outside the door. When he saw the latter coming out, he immediately whispered, “Old Master Qin is waiting for you in Director Rong’s office, Boss.”
“What’s the matter?”
“Qi Hao didn’t say anything; he just said that Old Master Qin wants you to go over there. Could he have become suspicious?”
Qin Jinhuan’s expression changed at once. “Become suspicious of what? What’s there to be suspicious about? Have you done anything that gives you a guilty conscience?”
Since he knew that he had said something wrong, Bian Zijun looked somewhat embarrassed in an instant.
“Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun’s leaving as well as Dong Wanqing’s death are the results of their own actions. We have nothing to do with everything.”
“Yes, I’ll keep that in mind.”
“Stay here and call me immediately if anything happens to Yu.”
“Yes, Boss.”
Qin Jinhuan then glanced at Mu Yu’s ward through the viewing glass. After making sure that she was still soundly asleep, he walked toward the hospital director’s office.
Meanwhile, Rong Ying was chatting with Qin Xiaozhi in her office. When she saw Qin Jinhuan coming in, she hurriedly stood up and greeted him.
Qin Jinhuan nodded slightly and replied, “Just go ahead with your work if you’re busy.” Then, he sat down on the sofa across from Qin Xiaozhi. Upon hearing his reply, Rong Ying immediately realized that Qin Xiaozhi and Qin Jinhuan had something to talk about. She was instantly worried; as far as she could recall, it was rare for the grandfather and grandson to communicate calmly.
Just then, Qin Xiaozhi seemed to have seen through her concerns, and he gave her a kind smile. “Just go ahead with your work, Ying. I’d like to ask Huan about Yu’s condition.”
Naturally, Rong Ying could tell that Qin Xiaozhi was telling her to leave. Even though she was worried, she had no choice but to leave the room.
Qin Xiaozhi then said to Qi Hao, “You should go out as well.”
“Alright,” Qi Hao replied and left the office immediately. When Qin Xiaozhi and Qin Jinhuan were the only ones left in the office, the older man stared at his grandson and asked, “Did you have anything to do with Wanqing’s death?”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t even raise his eyes as he helped himself to some tea. He replied nonchalantly, “If you think I have something to do with her death, then my answer is yes; my answer is no if you think I have nothing to do with it.”
“What’s the matter with your attitude?” Qin Xiaozhi was immensely displeased. “I’m talking to you seriously!”
“Would you believe me if I say I have nothing to do with it?”
“Of course I’ll believe you if you’re telling the truth.”
“Didn’t you look into it? It’s the same as the result of your investigation.”
“Is that so?”
“What else if it’s not?” Qin Jinhuan took a sip of tea before giving Qin Xiaozhi a lazy sidelong glance.
“A lot of people are saying that Wanqing died a wrongful death, though.”
“There are many who say that I’m a habitual womanizer. In reality, I love no one else but Yu.”
Qin Xiaozhi was rendered speechless by Qin Jinhuan’s retort. After falling silent for a long time, he heaved a long sigh and said, “Don’t get me wrong, Huan. I don’t mean anything else. I just think it’s too heartbreaking for Wanqing to die a wrongful death at such a young age.”
“She asked for it herself.”
Qin Xiaozhi looked devastated. “Actually, I had arranged everything for her. I just feared that bailing her out at this time would annoy Yu and affect her recovery, so I planned to wait until Yu got discharged from the hospital before bailing her out and letting her seek shelter from her uncle and aunt. I just didn’t expect her to be so impatient; she didn’t hesitate to attack the police officers and escape from the detention center to get back at Yu. It’s understandable for her to hate Yin Anran, but why would she hate Yu so much to the point of attempting to kill her?”
Qin Jinhuan pointed out, “That’s because Yu is the Qin Family’s young mistress.”
“Isn’t it because she loved you? I simply cannot understand it. It’s said that there are plenty more fish in the sea, but why must she insist on loving you? You never gave a damn about her. There are so many fine men in this world, so why did she have to love someone who didn’t love her? She even died because of this! She was so foolish.” Qin Xiaozhi gave another sigh with an apparent look of deep regret on his face.
Qin Jinhuan didn’t give an answer as he didn’t want to discuss this completely pointless subject with his grandfather.
“Stay away from Yin Anran in the future!” Qin Xiaozhi’s expression suddenly became stern. “Don’t let her indulge in fantasies by tangling with her! Don’t hurt Yu by making her another Wanqing! Just take good care of all the unwanted women whom you have encountered. I don’t want to see Yu getting hurt again, or I’ll never forgive you!”
Had his grandfather scolded him like this during normal times, Qin Jinhuan would have thrown the former a disdainful look. However, he didn’t do so this time, for he didn’t want Mu Yu to get hurt again either.
Qin Xiaozhi was somewhat surprised and gratified, for it was rare to see Qin Jinhuan being so tame. He then tapped his walking stick lightly on the floor to remind Qin Jinhuan to listen to his words seriously as he said, “You and Yu should get serious about having a baby when she’s nursed back to health. I hope to see my grandson in my remaining years. Even a glance at him would make me die content.”
Qin Jinhuan was somewhat touched by these words, and his eyes softened a lot as he looked at Qin Xiaozhi again. He put down his cup and seriously replied, “You’ll see him.”
Upon hearing this, Qin Xiaozhi immediately stood up in excitement. He said excitedly, “In that case, I’ll rub my eyes in anticipation.”
Qin Jinhuan nodded seriously. How could he not wish to see the fruits of love between him and Mu Yu?
Qin Xiaozhi tapped his walking stick on the floor again with a gratified expression. “Don’t go to the company these days, and just focus on taking care of Yu instead. A person is most psychologically vulnerable when they’re wounded, after all. She’ll recover faster with someone keeping her company.”
“Okay.” Qin Jinhuan then stood up and left the hospital director’s office.
After that, Qin Xiaozhi put down his walking stick and slowly sat down. Just then, Qi Hao and Qi Han came in together and asked in a low voice, “Are we going back, Grandpa?” They had been adopted by Qin Xiaozhi as his grandsons, but their relationship hadn’t been made public on a formal occasion. Therefore, they called Qin Xiaozhi ‘Boss’ in front of the outsiders and ‘Grandpa’ when no one else was present.
“I want to sit here for a while. Have a seat too, both of you.”
Upon noticing how grave Qin Xiaozhi looked, Qi Hao hesitated for a moment. Then, he asked cautiously, “Young Master Huan said he had nothing to do with this, right?”
“Yeah.”
Qi Hao heaved a visible sigh of relief. “Do you finally believe us right now?”
“I hope as well that he has nothing to do with this matter.” Qin Xiaozhi let out a sigh. “Actually, even without this matter, I had already thought of sending Wentao and Yueyun away from An City. Xi will never live a stable life in their presence. She hasn’t recovered yet, so I’m worried about letting her go overseas even if Shang Qi will be accompanying her. After all, she will be a stranger in a strange place, and no one can guarantee that Shang Qi will look after her meticulously all the time.”
Qi Hao understood what Qin Xiaozhi meant, and he understood the latter’s feelings. Qin Xiaozhi had been very strict with Qin Jinhuan to the extent that he rarely gave the latter a smile. In truth, he loved Qin Jinhuan very dearly. A heartless son had left him heartbroken enough, so the addition of an unfeeling grandson who never cared about kinship would definitely make him feel even more unbearable. After all, he was also afraid that Qin Jinhuan really had something to do with what happened to Dong Wanqing. As he became older, he could no longer cope with things as he used to before, especially when it came to kinship.
Qin Xiaozhi sat for a while before slowly standing up. “Let’s go back.”
“Okay.” The twins hurriedly came up and helped him up with a person supporting him on each side. However, Qin Xiaozhi gently pushed Qi Hao away and pointed at the fruits on the coffee table. “Bring these to Yu.”
“Okay.” Qi Hao let go of Qin Xiaozhi, turned around, and picked up the two bags of fruit before following Qin Xiaozhi and Qi Han out of the office. Only then did he discover how Qin Xiaozhi’s back bent much lower than it did a few days ago, as well as how harsh the latter’s gray hair was on the eye. As they were leaving the office, Qin Xiaozhi looked back at him. Suddenly, he discovered that Qin Xiaozhi had a lot more wrinkles on his face than before, and the latter’s old age became even more obvious even as he walked. In an instant, he couldn’t help being distracted somewhat.
Qi Hao saw with his own eyes what Qin Jinhuan had done recently. However, when he reported the situation to Qin Xiaozhi, he concealed the part that he thought should be kept secret, for he knew the reason Qin Jinhuan had done so. He had always despised Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun’s conduct, so he understood Qin Jinhuan’s feelings very well and supported him in secret. Of course, he didn’t expect to implicate Dong Wanqing by causing the latter’s death, for his original intention was to simply stop Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun from coming out and scourging Qin Jinhuan and Qin Chengxi again. He didn’t want them to upset the aged Qin Xiaozhi again, and driving them away from An City was the most appropriate way to deal with the Qin Family’s internal conflict. Also, it was the best way to bring comfort to Qin Xiaozhi’s weary heart. May the Qin Family be at peace and become a happy family from now on so that Grandpa can enjoy his old age peacefully, he prayed silently in his heart as he walked toward Mu Yu’s ward.
…
Meanwhile, a ray of sunshine fell quietly on the windowsill of Mu Yu’s ward as it glowed with great brilliancy. The woman lay back on her sickbed while staring blankly out of the window.
“What are you thinking about, darling?”
Mu Yu withdrew her gaze and turned to look at Qin Jinhuan as he blocked her view. As soon as she looked up, a fork was presented to her with a piece of apple speared on it. Only then did she notice that he was smiling at her with a plate of cut fruits in his hand. After smiling back at him, she opened her mouth, bit off half of the piece of apple, and chewed it slowly.
Qin Jinhuan sat down next to her and bit off the remaining half of the piece of apple as he asked softly, “Are you still thinking about the case?”
Mu Yu nodded with a look of worry on her face. “I have a bad feeling that the fourth murder will happen very soon.”
“Your bad feeling won’t come true.”
“I hope so too. In fact, I wish that the fourth murder will never happen.” Mu Yu sighed. She knew that this was only a nice wish, and it was only a matter of time before this wish came to naught.
“Since it’s bound to happen, it’s useless for you to worry about it. It’s better to accept it with equanimity.”
“I’m worried that more people will be thrown into panic. It will be worse if the victim is still a member of the Qing Tian Group, for your company will definitely be badly affected. It will be very, very unfavorable to your company’s growth if someone takes the opportunity to spread rumors.”
“There’s no way to deal with it if that really happens.” Qin Jinhuan seemed very calm, though. “We can only take appropriate measures as the situation calls for. Perhaps the fourth murder case will be a turning point for solving the case.”
“A turning point?” Mu Yu’s eyes lit up. “Do you mean—”
“Now that the murderer has committed three murders, he couldn’t have possibly left no clues no matter how careful he’d been with his plans. It’s just that we might have overlooked these clues, or the murderer covered up his involvement perfectly using his own identity. If the fourth murder case ever happens, you guys will definitely find clues about the murderer by looking for similarities.”
“I think the clue might lie in Huacheng, but the timeframe is still unclear for now. Based on the fact that Gong Lilan went into hiding, I speculate that the clue might be related to something that happened six years ago, but Chief Rong doesn’t think it’s possible. Besides, we can’t find Gong Lilan and Gan Wulin, so we can only continue investigating the case without a clue.”
“Therefore, if the fourth murder victim shows up, you guys will be able to make further speculations based on the victim’s situation. Perhaps the mystery will be solved in an instant.”
Mu Yu smiled at once. “You said as if it were just a walkover, but if it were really that easy, we would more or less have some clues in the previous three cases. We can only say that the murderer really is too crafty. Perhaps he is hiding in a corner and laughing at how we’re at our wits’ end.”
“Perhaps he’s even around us, and he’s just hiding himself really well.”
“I also feel that he’s around us—he might even be someone we know in person. Sometimes I feel especially afraid when I think of this.”
Qin Jinhuan put down the fruit platter and took Mu Yu into his arms with a laugh. “What are you afraid of when you have a tall, brave, and fierce husband sheltering you from all kinds of hardships?”
Mu Yu couldn’t help but laugh. As she pretended to be angry, she poked him and joked, “Perhaps the hardships I’m going through are all caused by you.”
She didn’t make the remark intentionally, but Qin Jinhuan’s heart ached instantly when he heard it. Indeed, if it hadn’t been for him, she wouldn’t have gotten injured and hospitalized several times. Thus, it was evident that he was probably the one who caused the hardships in her life. I will definitely protect you and not let you get hurt again, he vowed silently in his heart while looking at her unintentionally.
Instead of noticing the strangeness about Qin Jinhuan, Mu Yu lazily leaned her head on his shoulder, lowered her eyes, and thought deeply about the case again.
The sun had set outside the window, leaving only a ray of slowly fading red light in the distant sky. The street lamps were already glowing nearby, and the dazzling city lights were on one after another with a flavor of life. As people returned to their homes, they left the weariness of the day behind them and began to enjoy the wonderful nightlife to their hearts’ content.
As the night grew darker, the city that had been bustling for a day slowly quieted down, and people slowly went off to sweet dreamland in anticipation of a new day. However, no one knew whether the next day would bring them delight or a nightmare…
