My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 276
Chapter 276 Is This Slander?
The three soon arrived at Qin Wentao’s home. Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun were just about to leave, so Liu Xiaofan immediately walked up and presented his warrant card as he blocked their way.
“Excuse me, Madam Qin, we have a few questions.”
“What questions?” Qin Wentao stood in front of his wife and asked warily,
“Mr. and Mrs. Qin, please cooperate with us for an interrogation.” Liu Xiaofan politely waved the warrant card in his hand.
Dong Yueyun gestured for Qin Wentao to keep quiet, thereafter she turned toward Liu Xiaofan and asked, “Officer Liu, you may interrogate us, but I wish to meet Wanqing first.”
“We just interrogated Miss Dong, and we’re here exactly because of what she said.”
“What do you mean?”
Liu Xiaofan scanned their surroundings to confirm that there were no outsiders before continuing, “You still remember that ring you gave to Miss Dong, right? It’s the ring worn by the culprit.”
Dong Yueyun was surprised. “That ring was found?”
“No. Miss Dong said that the ring didn’t go missing at West Bay; she said she lost it here instead.” Liu Xiaofan pointed at the huge mansion behind them, his expression stern. “What might be your explanation for this?”
“What?!” Dong Yueyun was shocked at first and rebuked in a terrified tone, “Don’t spout nonsense! How could the ring go missing at my place?!”
She knew very well what it meant for the ring to be at her place.
Liu Xiaofan shrugged. “This is the clue Miss Dong provided. Please cooperate with our investigation and tell us the ring’s whereabouts.”
“How could Wanqing say such things to you?” Dong Yueyun was in disbelief. “She clearly lost her ring when she was in the hot springs at West Bay! How could she turn around and say it went missing here?”
“We are not lying. These are the records of the interrogation just now; you are free to confirm.” Liu Xiaofan passed the record book to her, then added, “We are the police, so we would never deceive you. We simply cannot do things that violate the law.”
Dong Yueyun paid him no heed as she quickly took the record book and flipped the pages. At the same time, Qin Wentao also moved his head closer to take a look.
As the two read the records, their expressions clouded over. Qin Wentao was the first to glare at Liu Xiaofan and question, “These words were truly spoken by Wanqing herself?”
“We have no reason to deceive you.” Liu Xiaofan looked at Dong Yueyun solemnly. “If I may ask, what is your explanation for this?”
“Wanqing would never say such things. Her ring didn’t go missing at my place!” Dong Yueyun still refused to believe his words, and she began to get agitated. “I want to see Wanqing; let me see her just once! I want to make sure what exactly is going on.”
Liu Xiaofan shrugged. “I’m sorry, it’s not in my power to let you meet her.”
Qin Wentao’s expression screamed, ‘I see through your antics’ as he glared at Liu Xiaofan with a sneer. “You must be hiding something if you refuse to let us see Wanqing! Quit your tricks; we did absolutely nothing against the law, so don’t even dream of falsely accusing us! Did Qin Jinhuan tell you to deceive us so that Yin Anran won’t get in trouble? We have nothing to do with the accident, so Wanqing definitely wasn’t involved either. It must be that evil Yin Anran who’s conspiring against us. If you want to investigate, go look for her and stop bothering us!”
Dong Yueyun was also enraged. “This incident had hurt our daughter-in-law and caused harm to our grandchild. They are both important people to us, so how could we have done anything to harm them? So please focus your investigation on the most suspicious person instead of knocking on our door. We have the least possibility of hurting Mu Yu and her child.”
“You have the least possibility of hurting Young Mistress Qin and her child?” Liu Xiaofan cocked his head and returned the question. “Then, Madam Qin, pardon my question, but how did your daughter get poisoned and sent to the hospital?”
Dong Yueyun’s face turned pale, after which she forcefully feigned calmness as she explained, “Xi got poisoned by accident; it didn’t have anything to do with Mu Yu!”
“If it weren’t for your daughter’s disobedience, would it still be unrelated to Young Mistress Qin?”
Fan Lifeng continued where Liu Xiaofan left off. “Wasn’t it your intention to harm the child in Young Mistress Qin’s belly through your daughter? But your daughter was too kind and didn’t want to aid you in any crime, so she would rather poison herself than cause harm to Young Mistress Qin and her child.”
“Shut up!” Qin Wentao flew into a rage. “How dare you say that without any evidence? I’m warning you, if you dare accuse us one more time, I’m suing you for defamation!”
Yan Zihao was unfazed. “We didn’t say any of those; it was your niece who said that.”
Liu Xiaofan waved the record book at the same time. “We have records of every word she said, and the part we just showed you was simply a fragment of it.”
“Impossible! Wanqing would never say such things!” Qin Wentao didn’t buy it. “Wanqing would never say that. She had already promised not to—”
“Wentao!” Dong Yueyun immediately yelled as she grabbed his arm.
Qin Wentao realized his slip-up and hastily changed his sentence. “I mean, we are not related to this incident at all. If Wanqing really said that, she was making things up to frame us.”
“Wanqing would never frame us! She is our niece! A blood relative! I know her more than anyone!” Dong Yueyun’s tone was firm as she shot Liu Xiaofan a cold glare. “I don’t know why you would try to cause a rift between me and my niece, but I can explain to you how my daughter got poisoned. When my daughter was sent to the hospital, Huan and my father-in-law went there as well. They have seen much of life, and they definitely have a more sinister view of the world compared to you. If it were as you said that I caused my own daughter to be poisoned, and I had intended from the start to harm Mu Yu and her child, do you not think that Huan and my father-in-law would notice that? If they noticed it, would they still quietly forgive us like that? And even if my father-in-law would forgive us simply because he is my husband’s father, Huan would never let us off the hook… Everyone in An City knows the conflict between my husband and his son, and I expect you few policemen would have heard of it as well.”
Liu Xiaofan shrugged. “I don’t know why Old Master Qin and Young Master Qin let you off the hook, but since Miss Dong didn’t mention anything about it, we didn’t ask either. But everything Miss Dong told us, every single incident and action, can prove that you held grudges against Young Mistress Qin when she was pregnant. Even in your dreams, you prayed that she wouldn’t be able to give birth, for once she did, Old Master Qin, who was hoping so desperately for a grandchild, would leave a huge portion of the family property to him in his elation. In other words, you have a motive for causing harm to Young Mistress Qin.”
The distribution of the family property had been troubling Qin Wentao, so at Liu Xiaofan’s words, he was immediately enraged and grabbed him by the collar, threatening in a rough voice, “If you dare slander us one more time, I will make sure you won’t leave here alive.”
“Wentao! Don’t do anything stupid!” Dong Yueyun instantly moved forward to pull him away. “The police won’t declare us guilty without proof. It doesn’t mean anything just because they claim we have a motive; they have to provide evidence for it. We can sue them for defamation when they realize they have no evidence later.”
She knew very well that they wouldn’t benefit anything from clashing with the police at this moment in time, and she guessed that Liu Xiaofan didn’t have any proof that she did anything wrong, or they would’ve taken her to the police station already instead of wasting their time here.
Liu Xiaofan adjusted his collar before saying, “Mr. and Mrs. Qin, truth be told, Miss Dong provided us with a lot of evidence on the things you did before so that she could prove her innocence regarding Young Mistress Qin’s accident. However, since we’re only in charge of the accident, we don’t want to branch out too much, so we just set those aside for the time being. Now I just want to know the story behind Young Mistress Qin’s accident. If you would cooperate with us in our investigation of this matter, I will pretend I’ve never heard about what you did before this. However, if you refuse to cooperate, causing me to be criticized by the higher-ups and receive punishment, I can’t promise I won’t keep my nose out of this.”
Seeing Liu Xiaofan’s confident attitude, Qin Wentao was a little panicked as he asked tentatively, “Wanqing really said that before?”
Without waiting for Liu Xiaofan to reply, Dong Yueyun stated coldly, “Wanqing would never! We are the people closest to her and the only ones who can help her. Even though she’s not a genius, she’s not a fool either! Unless I hear her words with my own ears, I will never believe that she would spout such nonsense.”
“Since you won’t believe me, I’ll help you make a call so that you can hear with your own ears what your niece said.” With that, Liu Xiaofan took out his phone, but before he dialed, he froze and cast a look at Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun. “Don’t make any sound when I’m calling Miss Dong, and don’t interfere in my conversation with her. I will only make the call if you promise me this.”
Dong Yueyun and Qin Wentao glanced at each other and exchanged meaningful looks, then nodded.
“All right then, I’m calling now.” Liu Xiaofan dialed a number, then put the call on loudspeaker as he explained, “Miss Dong’s phone was confiscated, so this is the detention center’s number.”
The call soon went through, and after Liu Xiaofan identified himself and made his request to the operator, the latter agreed to fulfill his request but asked him to call back 10 minutes later.
After 10 minutes, Liu Xiaofan dialed the same number and put the call on loudspeaker again. Soon, a female voice sounded on the other end of the line. “Hello? Who is this?”
It was an extremely familiar voice to Dong Yueyun and Qin Wentao. The two straightened themselves and stared right at the phone screen, ears on high alert.
After stating his identity, Liu Xiaofan continued, “Miss Dong, are you very sure that you lost your ring in your aunt’s house?”
“Yes, I was under the impression that it went missing in West Bay, but I thought for a long time about it in the detention center last night, then realized that the ring must have gone missing in my aunt’s house. I suspect this because I locked the locker at the hot springs immediately after taking off the ring, and I opened the locker myself after getting out of the bath. Then, I left West Bay with the bag in my hand and traveled to my aunt’s house, and the bag never left my sight throughout the whole journey. When I was eating there, I tossed my bag on the couch, and I realized that the ring was missing only when I was getting ready to leave, so I must have lost the ring when I was at my aunt’s house.”
“So you suspect that your aunt had someone take away your ring? She had gifted you the ring herself, and she wasn’t in need of money, so why would it be necessary for her to take away your ring in this manner?”
Dong Wanqing’s sneer sounded from over the phone. “This must be a scheme, and I’m just the scapegoat in this plan of theirs. I didn’t expect my aunt to plot things out so well; she was already planning for the accident then.”
At this, Dong Yueyun gritted her teeth while Qin Wentao flew into a rage. Worrying that they would interfere with the call, Yan Zihao and Fan Lifeng rushed forward and motioned for them to stay quiet.
Meanwhile, Liu Xiaofan was still asking questions. “Miss Dong, your aunt and uncle are so good to you, so why would they harm you? Are you mistaken?”
“Her? Being good to me?” Another sneer came from the other end of the line. “You’ve only seen the surface of things. They were nice to me because they wanted me to marry Young Master Qin and help them grab more of the family property. After Young Master Qin married Mu Yu, I became their tool to harm her. In their eyes, I am worth even less than Luca and Happy!”
Luca and Happy were the names of Dong Yueyun’s dogs.
In an instant, Dong Yueyun was fuming as she pushed away Fan Lifeng, who was standing in front of her, and rushed forward to curse Dong Wanqing.
Liu Xiaofan was caught off guard as she ran into him. The phone slipped out of his hand and fell straight onto the marble tiles, producing a ‘thud’ as it broke into pieces.
Qin Wentao was enraged as well, pointing at the broken phone and screaming, “You little b*tch! How dare you slander us just to clear your name! I must’ve been blind to raise an ungrateful mongrel like you!”
“All right, all right, stop that.” Liu Xiaofan’s heart ached as he picked up the broken phone, saying, “Do you believe me now? I expect you to keep your promise and cooperate with us as we investigate this matter.”
Qin Wentao’s face was red in anger, and he, of course, did not bother to treat them with politeness. His face was harsh as he roared, “There’s no need for cooperation! If you have your evidence, get your handcuffs and take us away. If not, get lost!”
“Hey!” Fan Lifeng asked harshly, “How could you go back on your word? We already agreed—”
“Someone get them to leave!”
At Qin Wentao’s command, a few burly men rushed out from the house, moving to push Liu Xiaofan and company away without a word.
“Wait!” Dong Yueyun stopped them, then turned toward the house, pointing at it while looking at Liu Xiaofan. “Officer Liu, this isn’t a place to talk. Let’s go in for a chat.”
With that, she gestured toward Qin Wentao, then went into the house. The latter immediately followed her inside.
Liu Xiaofan exchanged looks with Yan Zihao and Fan Lifeng, a hint of excitement apparent in their eyes. Then, they strode into the house together.
