My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 275
Chapter 275 A Devastated Woman
The following morning, Liu Xiaofan and the rest woke up early and washed up. They found Rong Jian still asleep, so they exchanged looks and, in a silent agreement, grabbed their jackets and went out, leaving Rong Jian alone at home.
After a quick breakfast nearby, the three changed into their uniforms in the car and held a small meeting. After that, they brought the relevant documents with them as they made their way to the detention center to see Chen Kai. Chen Kai knew that they were there to interrogate Dong Wanqing, so he led them to the interrogation room before asking someone to get Dong Wanqing.
After a day of not seeing Dong Wanqing, Liu Xiaofan and company were shocked to see the state she was in.
Dong Wanqing’s hair used to be wavy, but now it was just a mess. Her clothes were also in disarray, and her face was as white as a sheet. She had red and swollen eyes with bruising at the corners, and there was a blank look in her eyes. Gone were the usual exquisite makeup, the graceful demeanor, and the glorious aura. She was now a completely different person.
Liu Xiaofan couldn’t believe that the pitiful woman in front of him was Dong Wanqing herself.
Dong Wanqing and Liu Xiaofan had met on many occasions before, so she knew who he was. When she recognized the man in front of her, she acted as if she was seeing her own family and staggered forward to throw herself into his arms, sobbing, “Officer Liu, please help me, I beg of you! Please call my aunt to come get me out of this place! I can’t take this anymore; I don’t want to stay here even for a minute! This place is a living hell!”
“Hey, calm down! Let’s sit down and talk, okay?”
Liu Xiaofan subconsciously moved to push her away, but she stuck to him like glue, sobbing loudly while pleading with him for help. She probably wouldn’t let go unless he agreed to help her, and this was terribly awkward for Liu Xiaofan, who rarely had such close contact with members of the opposite sex. He hurriedly pushed with more force, but no matter how many times he pushed, Dong Wanqing wouldn’t budge. He was at a loss and hastily asked for help from his colleagues.
Yan Zihao and Fan Lifeng gave each other a look, then shrugged helplessly.
“What’s going on here?” Chen Kai from the detention center came forward as soon as he saw the commotion. He reprimanded as he gripped Dong Wanqing’s arm and gave it a mighty tug. There was a wail from Dong Wanqing, and then in the next second, she was successfully peeled away from Liu Xiaofan’s body.
Chen Kai glared coldly at her and warned, “These officers are here to interrogate you, so cooperate, you hear?”
“Y-Yes, got it.”
Dong Wanqing was obviously scared of Chen Kai as she immediately ceased her crying. She timidly shrunk back and answered, unable to stop her tears yet not daring to make any sound.
Her body started trembling from all the effort she took to hold the pitiful and sorrowful emotions in. She was pale in the face and looked like she was about to faint at any second.
Liu Xiaofan and company didn’t witness what Dong Wanqing experienced the night before, but they could make relatively accurate guesses based on her pitiful state. They didn’t say anything or exchange looks; they just silently motioned for her to sit down and talk.
Seeing that Dong Wanqing had quieted down, Chen Kai relaxed and gave Liu Xiaofan a quick greeting before leaving.
As soon as the door was closed, Dong Wanqing suddenly stood up and restarted the waterworks in front of Liu Xiaofan. Perhaps the episode with Chen Kai earlier had added to her stress, so now she was sobbing even more sorrowfully. She couldn’t even properly gasp for air, so no words came out when she opened her mouth.
“Miss Dong, please calm down.” Liu Xiaofan gave her a cup of hot tea and some napkins. “You were begging me to relay a message to your aunt so that she can get you out, right?”
At this, Dong Wanqing nodded her head furiously, and because of the excessive movement, her huge tears splashed onto the table.
Liu Xiaofan expressed helplessness as he shrugged. “Actually, Chief Chen informed me of this yesterday, and we had also contacted your aunt, but—”
“But what?” Dong Wanqing struggled to voice her question.
Since she did not get a wink of sleep last night and spent the whole night crying, her voice was now as hoarse as a crow.
“She said that she couldn’t help you and had asked you to cooperate with the police in their investigation. She believed that the police would give you due treatment.”
“No! That’s impossible! My aunt would never do this to me!” Dong Wanqing waved her hands, agitated. Perhaps fearing that Liu Xiaofan couldn’t hear her, she shouted with all her might, “Did you get something wrong?! Or are you just bluffing me, and you never contacted my aunt in the first place? Is Qin Jinhuan stopping my aunt from seeing me? Is he trying to ruin my life completely?”
“This has nothing to do with Young Master Qin. If anything, he’s just a family member of the victim; he had no right to meddle in this incident, so the main problem still lies with your aunt. Right, I heard your aunt had sent someone here yesterday to ask around and see how high the possibilities are for you to be convicted. After hearing that the possibility was quite high, she left without a word. After that, we did as you requested and talked to her, and she wasn’t very nice to us, as if she didn’t want to be involved in this matter.”
Fan Lifeng continued where Liu Xiaofan had left off. “I think she was already convinced that you were the culprit, so she feared that she would incur Young Master Qin’s wrath if she helped you. Oh, right—”
He turned to Yan Zihao. “When Chief Rong got drunk yesterday, what did he say about the methods the Qin family was using to distribute the family property?”
Yan Zihao immediately replied, “Chief Rong probably said something along the lines of Young Master Qin dividing the family property into two, half for him and another for his sister. But it depended on how his dad and stepmom behaved; if they still won’t behave and cooperate, there would be no room for discussion.”
“Right, that’s what he said.” Fan Lifeng looked toward Dong Wanqing. “Do you think your aunt and uncle would dare to provoke Young Master Qin at this period in time? If they did, they would be letting go of a huge sum of money in terms of family property.”
Liu Xiaofan nodded and said sternly as he kept his eyes on Dong Wanqing, “So, Miss Dong, you should stop hoping that your aunt would help you. Just cooperate with the police’s investigation and tell us the whole story.”
Dong Wanqing started crying again. “But I really am innocent! What story do you expect me to tell?!”
Liu Xiaofan’s expression turned grave. “Miss Dong, don’t think that we are powerless to do anything just because you refuse to say anything. Truth to be told, the evidence we have gathered so far is enough to prove you guilty, but out of respect for the humanitarian spirit, we still decided to hand you the initiative and give you a chance to confess your crimes. If you don’t grab this opportunity, we have no choice but to proceed as per the official procedure.”
“No! I still won’t believe that my aunt would just leave me to die!” Dong Wanqing wept and expressed her refusal to believe. “Unless I hear her own words with my own ears that she abandoned me, I will never believe it!”
With this, she wiped her tears and chokingly begged Liu Xiaofan, “Officer Liu, can you allow me to talk to my aunt? Just tell me how much you need; I can pay!”
“No, Miss Dong, you misunderstand. This isn’t a matter of money.” Liu Xiaofan hastily waved his hands in denial. He thought for a while before continuing, “Miss Dong, if I allowed you to call your aunt, and her words matched what I just told you, would you cooperate with us and tell us everything you know about the accident?”
Dong Wanqing did not hesitate before saying, “Yes.”
“Okay, I will hold you to your word.” Liu Xiaofan then took out his own phone and unlocked it before passing it to her.
Dong Wanqing hastily grabbed the phone and dialed a string of numbers with frightening speed. Her hands gripped the phone as she pressed it against her ears, her breaths suppressed as she waited for the call to go through.
“Hello? Who’s this?”
Hearing Dong Yueyun’s familiar voice, she released a waterfall of tears and said in a weeping voice, “It’s me, Dong Wanqing!”
“You? You’re released?”
“No, I’m still in the detention center. Aunt Yueyun, didn’t you promise to help me? Why haven’t I seen even a shadow of you to this day?”
The questioning attitude in her tone might have upset Dong Yueyun, for the latter’s voice immediately turned cold as she said, “I can’t help you on this matter; you’re on your own now. All right, I’m busy now, so—”
“Aunt Yueyun! Please, don’t hang up!” Dong Wanqing tried to stop her in a panic. “You can’t just abandon me like that! I’m your niece!”
“If you have anything to say, say it to the police. Your words are useless to me. I’m still driving, so I’ll hang up now.”
Dong Wanqing couldn’t even make her sobbing audible. “Aunt Yueyun! If you don’t help me, I’m done for! I’m the last descendant of the Dong Family; you can’t just leave me here to die! If I die, how are you going to face my parents and my grandparents?”
“How is that a problem? Wasn’t I the one who raised you despite everything? I paid for everything you own. Don’t complain of my cold-bloodedness when it was your own fault for going overboard and rejecting a good life just to daydream about being the young mistress of the Qin Family, plotting with all your might to harm Mu Yu—”
Dong Wanqing interrupted her in an annoyed voice, “When have I plotted to harm Mu Yu? Isn’t all this your idea? I simply listened to your orders!”
“Don’t speak nonsense!” On the other end of the line, Dong Yueyun was screaming in rage. “Just own up to your wrongdoings and be responsible for your actions instead of dragging me into this!”
“How could I have dragged you into this when you’re already knee-deep in it?” Dong Wanqing furiously wiped her tears and threatened, “If you don’t help me now, I will expose everything you ever did! We’re through!”
“How dare you!”
“If you dare to abandon me, then I absolutely dare to talk!”
“You!” Dong Yueyun suddenly laughed. “The past is in the past, and even the Old Master had given up on investigating it, so what use is there even if you spilled the beans now? Also, do you think the police will believe you? I have no time for your nonsense.”
With that, she hung up.
Dong Wanqing stared soullessly at the blank phone screen that indicated that the call had ended, despair written all over her face.
“Hey, my phone!” Seeing that his phone was about to slip from her hands, Liu Xiaofan caught it with frightening speed, then cast a look of pity on the woman sitting limply on the chair.
Fan Lifeng and Yan Zihao showed hints of sympathy in their eyes too. They exchanged glances and didn’t say anything as they quietly found a spot to sit at the side.
Glancing at his colleagues, Liu Xiaofan didn’t know what to say either. He raised his hand and looked at his watch, felt impatient, then looked toward Dong Wanqing. He was about to say something when the latter suddenly grabbed the cup on the table and flung it onto the floor, and then she proceeded to lift the chair.
“Hey!”
Thinking that she was going for him, Liu Xiaofan subconsciously took a few steps backward and secretly positioned himself so that he would be ready to snatch the chair away from her.
However, Dong Wanqing didn’t throw the chair at him. Instead, she threw it on the floor like a maniac. Seeing it undamaged, she proceeded to pick it up and throw it down again. After repeating the process several times, the poor chair was in pieces. After venting her anger, she sat right on the floor and held her head as she cried bitterly.
After making sure she had cried enough, Liu Xiaofan walked over and helped her up as he asked softly, “Miss Dong, that ring of yours is the key item in this case. If you can confirm that you had lost the ring early on, you may be able to prove your innocence.”
“Really?” Dong Wanqing’s eyes turned bright, then she thought long and hard before saying, “I remember going straight to Aunt Yueyun’s house after getting back from West Bay. After having dinner at her place, I got ready to hang out with my friends, and I realized that I wasn’t wearing the ring when I was doing my makeup. I checked my bag and realized that it was missing. Since the bag wasn’t with me when I was in the hot springs, I thought that I lost it in West Bay, so I hurried there overnight—”
Liu Xiaofan interrupted her. “Was the bag with you when you were having dinner?”
Dong Wanqing shook her head. “I tossed it on the couch in the living room before eating.”
Suddenly, she regained her spirit…
After finishing the interrogation, Liu Xiaofan and company felt as if a burden had been lifted from their shoulders. They passed Dong Wanqing over to Chen Kai, then drove away.
“Fan, are we going back to the Bureau?” Fan Lifeng hugged the back of the front seat as he asked Liu Xiaofan.
“Of course not.” Yan Zihao gave him a good slap on the back of his head. “The show is still running. We’re headed for the next location.”
“See, Zihao is a smart guy. Learn a thing or two from him.” With that, Liu Xiaofan stepped on the gas pedal and the car sped off.
