My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 269
Chapter 269 Disconcerted
“I got it, Boss. I’ll get it done right away,” Bian Zijun replied with a grave expression before leaving in a hurry.
Qin Jinhuan stood in place before turning around. After staring at the room where Qin Xiaozhi was in for a long time, he began to walk toward Mu Yu’s ward.
“Huan.” Just then, Rong Ying ran up to him from the side. “You haven’t had dinner yet. I’ve cooked a bowl of noodles for you, so let’s eat it in my office.”
“I’m not hungry.”
“Huan!” Rong Ying quickly caught up with him. “It’s already midnight now, yet you haven’t eaten or drank anything since you got off the plane this afternoon. Your body won’t be able to take it if you keep going on like this!”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t stop, though. “I have no appetite.”
“Humans can’t survive without food! At the very least, you should eat something! You don’t have to worry about Yu—her parents are keeping her company right now. Besides, I have arranged for several nurses to be on duty. Hey, Huan! How upset would Yu be if she learns that you haven’t had anything to eat or drink!”
Upon hearing Rong Ying’s last sentence, Qin Jinhuan paused for a moment. Then, he quickened his pace.
“Huan!” Seeing that she couldn’t stop him, Rong Ying paused for a moment. Then, she immediately ran after him and said, “You have no idea how sadly Yu cried after she chased you away. Not only did she sob herself hoarse, but she tearfully said…” She purposely pronounced the last word with a drawl.
“What did she say?” The impatient Qin Jinhuan suddenly stopped in his tracks, causing a momentarily unprepared Rong Ying to bump right into him. Holding her steady at once, he then asked again, “What did she say?”
Rong Ying touched her slightly painful nose before she answered, “Yu wept a lot and told me many things, but I can’t summarize them in just a few words. I haven’t had dinner either and am very hungry right now, so I really don’t have the strength to tell you in detail about it. How about this? Come to my office and we’ll talk about it over dinner.”
Qin Jinhuan looked askance at her, and it seemed like he was very displeased with the way she kept him in suspense.
“I’m really hungry.” Ignoring his displeasure with a shrug, Rong Ying walked to her office herself while pretending not to care if he would listen to what she said. However, she slowed down her pace after taking a few steps; it was apparent that she was waiting for him to catch up with her.
Qin Jinhuan hesitantly looked at the end of the corridor. Mu Yu’s ward was there, but after a moment of hesitation, he turned around and followed Rong Ying to her office.
As soon as he opened the door, he smelled the aroma of green onions; it instantly whetted his appetite since he had been starving for a long time. He subconsciously raised his eyes and glanced around the room, whereas Rong Ying—who was smiling in secret—had walked quickly to a corner in the office.
In the corner was a small table with a microwave oven on it. After opening the microwave oven, Rong Ying reached for the big porcelain bowl in it without thinking. “Ouch!”
“Watch out! It’s hot!” Qin Jinhuan’s reminder was too late; Rong Ying had let go of the bowl and jolted due to the burn. He immediately grabbed her hand and prised her fingers open to examine them. “Did you get burned?”
Rong Ying instantly retracted her hand, her face blushing as though she had gotten an electric shock. Since she feared that Qin Jinhuan might notice something wrong with her, she hastily replied, “No, I’m fine.” She continued to shake her hands to cover up her gaffe just now.
Luckily, Qin Jinhuan was so preoccupied with his worry for Mu Yu that he failed to notice her unusual behavior. Thinking that she had burned herself severely, he immediately shoved her into the restroom. “Rinse your hands with some cold water first while I find some burn cream to apply to your wound.”
“Hey! Uh… There is a tube of burn cream in my cabinet.”
“Where is it?”
“It’s in the third drawer from the top on your left-hand side,” Rong Ying answered as she moved quickly into the restroom, fearing that he would notice why she was blushing.
There were blisters on her thumbs and index fingers because of the burn, but Rong Ying knew that they weren’t serious—these injuries would heal within a day or two even if she didn’t apply any ointment to them. Even so, she didn’t stop Qin Jinhuan from getting the burn cream, for she really enjoyed the feeling of being cared about by him.
After putting her hands under the faucet, she inadvertently looked up and was instantly shocked to see her blushing cheeks and bashful look in the mirror. Her first reaction was to close the door, for she feared that Qin Jinhuan could tell her feelings from the look on her face.
Qin Jinhuan used to be quite cold toward Rong Ying in the past. He didn’t want to give her the slightest idea that there was a possibility of a romance between them; he knew of Rong Ying’s feelings for him, and she knew very well that she wasn’t his cup of tea. When he fell wholeheartedly in love with Mu Yu later, he even kept his distance from her.
Rong Ying was well aware of everything, so to dispel his inner misgivings, she found an opportunity to profess her love for him and told him that she had gotten over him thoroughly—she even chose to give him and Mu Yu her best wishes. Because of that, he contacted her more frequently these days and was willing to turn to her whenever he needed help. If he found out what she was hiding in the bottom of her heart at this time, he would definitely distance himself from her again, after which she might never get a chance to get close to him for the rest of her life.
For the very first time, Rong Ying felt so inferior in the face of love—no, not in the face of love, but in the face of Qin Jinhuan. He managed to stir up a myriad of emotions within her with just a trivial word of solicitude. Wouldn’t she go crazy if he was a bit more cordial and active in their relationship?
Suddenly, she found herself looking very unfamiliar in the mirror, for the confidence and pride that she had always engraved on her face could not be seen at this moment. Rong Ying! What nonsense are you thinking about? Have you forgotten what you have promised yourself? Are these thoughts of yours worthy of Mu Yu, who never put her guard up against you? You regard her as your sister-in-law, so make your actions worthy of it!
The series of questions made her feel extremely ashamed. To bring herself to her senses at once, she covered her burning cheeks with her hands; they were icy from being rinsed with water.
Knock! Knock! Knock! She heard a knock on the door just then, and it was soon accompanied by Qin Jinhuan’s caring voice. “Ying? Are you all right?”
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine.” Rong Ying hastily composed herself.
“Well, come out and let me take a look at your hands to see if there’s a need to apply the burn cream.”
“Uh, okay. Let me dry my hands first.” While she pretended to dry her hands, Rong Ying secretly took a few deep breaths and washed her face with cold water. After seeing in the mirror that the noticeable blushes had faded from her face, she wiped her face dry, opened the door, and went out. Then, pretending as if nothing had happened, she walked up to Qin Jinhuan as he stood outside with the tube of burn cream in his hand.
“How are your hands? Let me take a look at them.”
“It’s nothing serious.” Rong Ying spread out her hands. The blisters on her fingers weren’t big, but they were very conspicuous.
Qin Jinhuan held out the tube of burn cream—the cap of which he had unscrewed—to Rong Ying with a frown. “Your fingers have blisters on them, so you must apply this ointment! Otherwise, don’t think of performing surgery over the next few days.”
“They aren’t a big deal…”
“Hurry up and apply the cream—the sooner, the better.”
Rong Ying didn’t refuse Qin Jinhuan again, for his imperative tone of voice made her feel pretty good. After gently taking the tube of burn cream from him, she squeezed out a bit of the cream with the joints of her thumb and index finger and applied it gently to her burns.
Meanwhile, Qin Jinhuan had taken out the big porcelain bowl while she was putting on the medicine. Then, he dished out some of the noodles into a small bowl, put the bowl in front of her, and took out another bowl. As he filled the small bowl with noodles, he asked her, “What did Yu say earlier?”
She knew that Qin Jinhuan was dishing out the small bowl of noodles for her, so Rong Ying felt even happier than eating the noodles itself. She replied, “Yu thought that this miscarriage would make her infertile and deprive her of the right to be a mother in the future. That’s why she was so heartbroken.”
“Didn’t you explain it to her?”
“I did, but she didn’t believe what I said and thought that I was coaxing her. The doctor who operated on her earlier has gotten off duty, so I’ll have her bring Yu’s medical record over tomorrow and explain it to Yu.” Having finished putting on the burn cream, Rong Ying sat down and prepared to pick up the chopsticks to eat noodles, only to find it difficult to hold the chopsticks with the burn cream applied to her hands. She then got up and looked for a spoon as she continued, “Yu can never recuperate with peace of mind if this matter isn’t explained clearly. I hope she won’t think that the doctor is merely saying so under my instructions tomorrow.”
“Did she say anything else to you other than this?”
“No, she didn’t. By the way, the other matter is that she suspected you told Grandpa and her parents about what happened to her. Just explain this to her again when you visit her later.” Rong Ying took a spoon and sat down, only to put down the spoon in a sulk when she found that she couldn’t eat noodles with it at all.
“Okay.” Qin Jinhuan glanced at the spoon in her bowl. Then, he lowered his head and quickly ate the noodles without saying another word.
In fact, he hadn’t eaten or drunk anything even before that afternoon, for he had eaten nothing since he learned that morning that Mu Yu had been in an accident. At first, he was in a hurry to come back and see her, but later on, he wanted to find out the vicious perpetrator and punish the person as soon as possible. Even though he was hungry, he was in no mood to eat anything after so many things had happened. Although Bian Zijun had reminded him more than ten times to eat something, all he could think about was what had happened that day.
“Huan, is Dong Wanqing really the person who hurt Yu?” Rong Ying was unaware of the complicated inside story behind the accident. She merely heard Rong Jian mentioning in the beginning that the accident might be Dong Wanqing’s doing, but she didn’t dig deeper into it.
Qin Jinhuan stopped eating for a moment before he replied in a low, muffled voice, “It must be her.”
Not understanding thoroughly what Qin Jinhuan meant, Rong Ying gnashed her teeth for a moment. “This woman is really insane! What she’s done is technically murder!”
Qin Jinhuan looked indignantly resentful as well. “No, it isn’t technically a murder, but an actual one. My baby is gone, and my woman nearly lost her life because of it.”
“You’re right! It’s a murder! Such a wicked, merciless, and inhumane woman must be jailed for the rest of her life! Have the police taken her into custody?”
“Yeah, they have.”
“In that case, why is Rong Jian still here? Shouldn’t he interrogate her and convict her of the crime immediately so that she’ll suffer all kinds of hardships in jail?”
“Grandpa called him over because he doesn’t know the whole story behind this yet.”
“Oh, okay,” Rong Ying replied. Then, she suddenly recalled one thing and asked cautiously, “Could Dong Yueyun have something to do with this?”
Qin Jinhuan immediately raised his eyes. “Why would you say so?”
“I know that Dong Wanqing has always loved you and dreamed of becoming the Young Mistress of the Qin Family, but she wouldn’t have such ambition without Dong Yueyun’s wilful instigation. After all, you and Yu have gotten married and are even expecting a child—they shouldn’t know that Yu was feigning pregnancy earlier on, anyway. Technically, Dong Wanqing should’ve given up hope for good. Furthermore, Yu isn’t a flamboyant person; instead, she is always kind to others, so Dong Wanqing doesn’t hold any deep-seated grudges against her. Dong Wanqing has been living a leisurely and carefree life, and you obviously wouldn’t let her survive if she treats Yu this way, so I don’t think she would be so stupid no matter how dumb she is. She must have done this because Dong Yueyun’s demagogy got into her head for a moment.”
Qin Jinhuan chuckled. “Your reasoning sounds quite plausible. It seems that you also have the potential to be a police officer.”
“Are you complimenting me, Huan?” Rong Ying smiled while trying her best to hide her excitement.
“Of course.” Having finished eating the noodles in his bowl, Qin Jinhuan got up and moved his chair to Rong Ying’s side. Then, he picked up her chopsticks and spoon before scooping up some noodles into it. Then, he signaled for her to open her mouth.
Rong Ying was stunned at once.
“Don’t think too much about this. I’m thanking you on Yu’s behalf since you’re having dinner at midnight because of her. Besides, I hope that you can continue to help me look after Yu once you have your fill.”
Rong Ying came to her senses and smiled in embarrassment. “Don’t mention it. I think of you as my brother—this makes Yu my sister-in-law, so I ought to do something for you two.”
“That’s why I should do something for you as well. Come on—hurry up and eat it. I have to keep Yu company after you finish this.”
When she sensed how sincere and earnest Qin Jinhuan was, Rong Ying felt ashamed of her previous daydreaming. Once she corrected her thoughts, she obediently and cooperatively opened her mouth.
With that, Qin Jinhuan fed Rong Ying the noodles in mouthfuls as she ate bit by bit. Occasionally, they would exchange a word or two while looking perfectly calm.
However, just when Rong Ying was about to finish eating, Wen Zeyu’s sudden appearance broke the calm atmosphere between them.
