Chapter 268 Each Side Sticks to Their Own Views
Qin Jinhuan turned around, whereas Bian Zijun followed behind him somewhat nervously while asking in a soft voice, “Boss, wouldn’t it be a bit inappropriate to startle Old Master this way?”
Qin Jinhuan stopped in his tracks and asked flatly in return, “Now that he’s been startled, who cares if it’s inappropriate?”
“What if the Young Mistress misunderstands you again and insists on divorcing…” Bian Zijun replied, but he didn’t dare to finish his sentence after getting a death stare from Qin Jinhuan.
“There’s no divorce to be spoken of in my marriage,” Qin Jinhuan replied as he left the hospital director’s office.
Just then, Rong Ying came face-to-face with him. “Has your wound been treated, Huan?”
“What wound?”
“Didn’t Yu bite you? Have you gotten the nurse to help you—”
“It’s not necessary.”
“Huan! Hey! Where are you going?”
“I’m going to see Grandpa.”
“Oh.” Rong Ying hesitated for a moment before she caught up with him and asked inquiringly, “Are you the one who told Grandpa about what happened to Yu, Huan?”
“Yeah.”
“Why? You know that Grandpa is in poor health! You would’ve easily given him a shock by doing so!”
Qin Jinhuan slowed down his pace and turned to look at her. He asked slowly in return, “Grandpa mistakenly thought that Yu was pregnant before, so why can’t we tell him the truth?”
“That’s because Grandpa always wanted a great-grandson, so we were afraid that he would find it unacceptable if Yu wasn’t actually pregnant.”
“Well, do you know why I chose to hide this from him despite knowing that such a thing couldn’t be kept secret for a long time?”
“That’s because the baby bump isn’t visible in the early stages of pregnancy; no one would’ve been able to tell if Mu Yu was pregnant at all. You wanted to try your luck in this month or two, and there wouldn’t be much impact on Grandpa’s health if you told him the truth only after Yu really became pregnant.”
“Is it possible for her to get pregnant again in a short time?”
Rong Ying was startled for a moment before she shook her head. Mu Yu’s health wasn’t as poor as she thought it was, but she wasn’t physically fit enough to get pregnant again in the next few months. It had been more than two months since she was mistakenly diagnosed as a pregnant woman; now that she couldn’t get pregnant for the time being, they weren’t able to hide this from Qin Xiaozhi.
Even though Rong Ying understood why Qin Jinhuan did so, she still expressed her concern. “Grandpa has always cared greatly about Yu. Now that he’s already worried about her car accident, what if he can’t take it when you tell him that she’s lost her baby?”
“He’d find out about this through various channels even if I don’t tell him today.” Qin Jinhuan gave her a sidelong glance. “Besides, do you really think that Grandpa didn’t know Yu wasn’t pregnant?”
“Huh? When did he find out about this?” Rong Ying was astounded. “He even asked me to do a pregnancy check on her shortly before the new year!”
Rong Ying knew that Mu Yu wasn’t pregnant back then, so the so-called pregnancy check was merely a show made at the hospital. However, she regretted it somewhat right now. Had she done a pregnancy check on Mu Yu for real back then, she would have found out about Mu Yu’s pregnancy earlier and taken note of it; what happened on this day wouldn’t have happened at all.
Qin Jinhuan answered, “He knew that Yu wasn’t pregnant, yet he got her to make a pregnancy check as usual because he wanted to secretly put pressure on us by taking advantage of our concern for him.”
Rong Ying thought that his words made sense, but she still expressed her puzzlement. “Since you were aware that Grandpa knew about your front, why didn’t you tell her about that? Why did you pretend to know nothing instead?”
Qin Jinhuan answered earnestly, “That’s because I also hoped that Yu would become pregnant and bear me a child.”
Upon hearing this, Rong Ying felt happy for Mu Yu, but she still couldn’t stop herself from blaming Qin Jinhuan. “No matter what, you should’ve let Yu know that you were going to tell Grandpa about this today! You have no idea how worried she was about Grandpa before this. Even though I have no idea why Yu previously said she wanted to divorce you, I know that she isn’t someone who doesn’t listen to reason. She must have said so because you broke her heart. She is in her most vulnerable state right now, and you care a lot about her; why would you make her angry instead of showing how much you care about her?”
This time, Qin Jinhuan simply walked ahead with his head down without answering her.
“Huan!” Rong Ying immediately caught up with him. Then, she anxiously reminded him again and said, “Yu needs you the most right now. If you can’t—”
“I know what to do,” Qin Jinhuan interrupted her flatly. Then, he quickened his pace and walked into the lounge that Rong Ying had prepared for Qin Xiaozhi.
Rong Ying knew that Qin Xiaozhi and Qin Jinhuan wouldn’t clash since her brother was inside. She also knew that they had something to talk about, so she turned around and busied herself with her own work instead of following Qin Jinhuan into the lounge.
Qin Jinhuan was surprised when he entered the lounge and saw that Rong Jian was also there, but he didn’t wear much of an expression on his face. Instead, he went straight to the sofa across from Qin Xiaozhi and sat down without greeting Rong Jian.
As soon as he sat down, Qin Xiaozhi began interrogating him with a stern expression. He said, “What exactly is the matter with Yu’s car accident?”
Qin Jinhuan replied without raising his eyes, “It’s the same as what you already know about it.”
Qin Xiaozhi didn’t quite believe it, though. “Was it really Wanqing’s doing?”
Qin Jinhuan immediately turned to look at Rong Jian. “Didn’t you explain the situation to Grandpa?”
“I did,” Rong Jian replied. “It’s just that there are still some questionable points here and there. For now, I still can’t conclude that it’s definitely Dong Wanqing’s doing.”
“Why can’t you make that conclusion?” Qin Jinhuan got angry at once. “Didn’t her own incoherent confession, other people’s testimonies, and the ring prove her guilt?”
Rong Jian sounded calm as he spoke. “I had someone speak to the customer service representative of West Bay Spa Center, and Dong Wanqing did have an argument with them more than two months ago over her missing diamond ring. In other words, that ring might have actually gone missing back then, so it cannot be used as evidence to prove that Dong Wanqing is the perpetrator of the evil-intentioned car accident. Also, we can’t confirm the identity of the person who called Yu and the identity of the vehicle’s renter.”
At once, Qin Jinhuan was infuriated. He then questioned, “In that case, who do you think the culprit is?”
“I can’t answer this question for the time being. Of course, I’m just saying that Dong Wanqing might not be the one who did this, but I have not ruled her out completely as a suspect. Judging from the evidence we have, she is the prime suspect in this case.”
“Isn’t this rubbish?”
“Calm down, Huan.” Just then, Qin Xiaozhi—who had been listening to their conversation—finally spoke. “This crime is very abominable in nature, so Rong Jian is right to be so careful and meticulous. The police wouldn’t let off any bad person, but they mustn’t wrongfully accuse an innocent person either.”
However, the words ‘innocent person’ were greeted with a cold snort from Qin Jinhuan.
Rong Jian ignored that snort and analyzed the case with a calm expression. “Huan, there are two major questionable points in this case for now. The first point is whether or not Dong Wanqing has actually lost the ring; if she hasn’t, the possibility of her being the perpetrator will become greater. However, if she did lose the ring, the ring’s emergence at this time would be someone else’s deliberate attempt to frame her for the accident.”
However, Qin Jinhuan objected in a cold voice and retorted, “Shouldn’t she be determined as the perpetrator right away if she hadn’t lost the ring? Why would this only increase the possibility of her being the perpetrator?”
“This has something to do with the second questionable point,” Rong Jian explained unhurriedly. Then, he continued, “Dong Wanqing and Yin Anran were in the office between 10.00AM to 11.00AM—in this case, the first person who fell asleep first is key. It’s very likely that one of them drugged the other with sleeping pills, went out, committed the crime, and came back to shift the blame onto the other. They have similar figures, so it’s really difficult to recognize them just by looking at them from behind.”
Qin Jinhuan’s face turned chilly at once. “Are you suspecting Yin Anran?” Wouldn’t my plan fall through if Anran turns out to be the perpetrator?
“They both love you and covet Yu’s status as the Young Mistress of the Qin Family; hence, they both have a motive for this case.” Seeing that Qin Jinhuan was about to blow up, Rong Jian hurriedly sat him down. “Don’t get worked up. Let us make some deductions,” he urged. After seeing that Qin Jinhuan had sat down, he then continued, “It’s not difficult for us to find out via our investigations that the perpetrator had everything planned in advance. If this person is Yin Anran and if Dong Wanqing didn’t lose her ring, Yin Anran would’ve probably drugged Dong Wanqing’s tea with some kind of sleeping pill and waited until Dong Wanqing fell asleep. Then, she would’ve used something to remove the rhinestone from Dong Wanqing’s fingernail before removing the latter’s ring. Of course, she could have gotten this ring two months ago. After leaving a view of her back in the parking lot, she’d have gotten into her own car, put the rhinestone—which had been taken from Dong Wanqing’s fingernail—into her glove, wore the ring, drove to Olay Supermarket’s underground parking lot, and changed her vehicle. Then, she would have driven the rented vehicle to the east entrance of Rising Sun Plaza—where she and Yu had agreed to meet—and deliberately let the ring be captured by the surveillance camera for a moment while she was on the way. After hitting Yu, she would immediately flee the scene, get back into her car, and drive back to the company. Knowing in advance that Zhi Xiaoyin would deliver some documents to the company, she would dishevel Dong Wanqing’s hair at the right time before waking Dong Wanqing up and return to her lounge. Dong Wanqing is particularly obsessive about her appearance, so she would’ve definitely gone to the restroom to fix her makeup and tidy her hair after discovering that she had bent over her desk and fallen asleep. Then, when Zhi Xiaoyin came to the company, Yin Anran would come out of the office while pretending to be unwell to obtain Zhi Xiaoyin’s testimony. With Zhi Xiaoyin’s testimony, Yin Anran’s words, the rhinestone in the glove, and the ring that should’ve belonged to Dong Wanqing, we’d naturally direct our suspicions at Dong Wanqing. Yin Anran is clever in the sense that she framed Dong Wanqing for the crime by taking advantage of the common belief that no one would actually go out and harm someone while dressing in their own clothes. Furthermore, by driving her own car and dressing in her own clothes, she didn’t have to worry about leaving behind any questionable traces because this is very natural. As for the unplugged surveillance camera, she knew in advance that the surveillance camera was unplugged, yet she put on this show to better prove her innocence.”
Qin Jinhuan mocked in disdain and said, “What a brilliant deduction you’ve made.”
Rong Jian chuckled with embarrassment. “Of course, this is just one of the many possibilities. Another possibility is that all of this had been planned by Dong Wanqing—which includes getting her hair dyed the same color as Yin Anran’s hair. She could have drugged Yin Anran’s tea and waited for Yin Anran to fall asleep before putting on Yin Anran’s jacket and styling her hair the same way Yin Anran did. After that, she would drive Yin Anran’s car to Olay Supermarket’s underground parking lot and change her vehicle, but on her way there, she accidentally revealed the ring that she had actually recovered long ago. She thought that this fleeting shot wouldn’t be discovered, so when you questioned her about this shot, she panicked and subconsciously denied that it was her ring, but when she saw that she couldn’t hide it anymore, she changed her story and claimed that she had lost the ring. After hitting Yu at Rising Sun Plaza, she would immediately flee the scene, change her vehicle, and return to the company. After returning to her office and giving Yin Anran the jacket, she would go to the restroom to tidy her hair. However, she didn’t expect that Yin Anran would wake up and that Zhi Xiaoyin would come. I don’t have to say what happened after that.”
Just then, Qin Xiaozhi voiced his suspicions. “If Wanqing was the one who did it and planned all of this in advance, why didn’t she reveal at first that she had dozed off? Why didn’t she reveal that until Yin Anran had done so? Wouldn’t she blow her own cover easily if what she said was self-contradictory? By right, she should’ve thought up a reply and answered Huan’s questions fluently as Yin Anran did.”
It was apparent that Qin Xiaozhi was taking Dong Wanqing’s side, for his last sentence was directed against Yin Anran. This irritated Qin Jinhuan a lot, but he didn’t lose his temper at once. Instead, he merely gave Rong Jian a sidelong glance and asked, “Since when did the police solve cases based on reasoning alone without considering the evidence?”
Rong Jian smiled with embarrassment. “No, that’s not true. I’m just analyzing the case with you—”
“I’m not interested in the analytical process; I just want to know who is the actual person who hurt Yu, and I want to see her getting punished according to the law as soon as possible,” Qin Jinhuan retorted before swinging the door open and leaving the lounge.
When he reached a secluded corner, he called Bian Zijun over and whispered some words in his ear.
