The Young Urban Doctor Novel - Chapter 29
Chapter 29: Unbreakable Connection with the Ouyang Family
Her clear voice was heard once the call was accepted, “This is Ouyang Feifei.” After declaring herself, she asked, “Did you and Huihui fight again?”
Luo Ziling blood started to boil as soon as the matter was brought up again.
“Yes. We fought each other, literally. Ouyang Feifei, can you please tell your sister to stay away from me?”
The conversation lapsed into silence. After a while, Ouyang Feifei promptly apologized.
“I’m sorry!” she said, “I already gave her a piece of my mind.”
“So, she called and told you what happened,” said Luo Ziling.
Though he was angry, he was still being careful with his words. He did not know whether or not Ouyang Huihui had told her sister about the times he had accidentally ‘taken advantage’ of her. Despite those instances being accidents, without any intent on his part, he still felt guilty. He knew that touching a lady without her permission was an immoral act.
From where he stood, his former fiancé Ouyang Feifei was someone incomparable, especially to Ouyang Huihui, the crazy psycho b*tch.
Even if Luo Ziling ignored the fact that they were once engaged to each other, he still had fond memories of the two of them playing with each other when they were younger. In his heart, Ouyang Feifei was still someone important, unlike Ouyang Huihui.
Hence, even though they were no longer engaged, Luo Ziling did not want Ouyang Feifei to look down on him. His pride as a man would not allow it.
“She’s still obvious to many things,” said Ouyang Feifei. Her tone of voice was the same as when he met her at the Ouyang mansion—cold and unwavering.
“I hope you will forgive her,” she added.
After listening to Ouyang Feifei’s explanation, the anger in Luo Ziling’s heart subsided. Awkwardly, he felt the need to explain himself.
“It’s partially my fault as well. I reacted too hastily. I yelled at her and even retaliated when she struck me. Please tell her that I didn’t do it intentionally.”
As he explained himself, Luo Ziling got up from the table and left the trio. To be honest, he didn’t need to. The three of them were as drunk as a skunk. They were babbling nonsense and could not even listen to each other, much less to the conversation between Luo Ziling and Ouyang Feifei.
“Grandfather was asking about you. When will you be coming over?”
“Shoot!”
Not acknowledging his earlier comments, Ouyang Feifei jumped into a new conversation topic. Luo Ziling instantly felt awkward about the invitation. He could not blatantly reject her, and in the end, he had to agree.
“I will come over and have a meal with Grandfather Ouyang when I have the time. My grandfather instructed me to check on him but I forgot about it because I have been too busy.”
Silence fell again. Luo Ziling even assumed that Ouyang Feifei had already hung up.
Just as he was about to make a noise, her voice rang out, “In your grandfather’s letter, he wrote that the disease I had when I was young has not been entirely cured.”
“Ah? Why didn’t he tell me that…”
Luo Ziling was rather surprised. When he left the village, his grandfather had indeed asked him to check on Ouyang Feifei, and to treat her if necessary.
When she was young, she had been diagnosed with anaphylaxis, which could result in a life-threatening allergic reaction. She was allergic to pollen, dust, and any other particles that would trigger a reaction. She also could not consume food with high protein content, such as fish, meat, and seafood.
It was said that she was born with her body constitution, and her severe allergic reactions were just the result of it. Despite being treated in many hospitals, she had never fully been cured. In fact, there was no way to cure her overly-sensitive body. Her condition would only get worse.
When summer came, Ouyang Feifei started showing severe symptoms. Every time she had a reaction, it was akin to going through the trials of hell. Finally, Ouyang Lingyun took her to the Northwest to be treated by Luo Liansheng.
After two months of treatment, Ouyang Feifei’s condition showed drastic improvement. Her sensitivity was reduced to the point where she could now eat meat, fish, and basically seafood. She could also be exposed to pollen and dust without showing any signs of anaphylactic shock.
Not only did Luo Ziling know about her condition, he also understood the reason why she was sensitive to so many allergens. In modern medical terms, it had something to do with her own immunity system.
According to the practice of Chinese medicine, she had succumbed to a Yin deficiency. Her Qi flow turned cold, which caused many bodily malfunctions, and made her prone to many other diseases.
Diseases brought about from a Yin deficiency were hard to treat. It was something moden medicine could not cure. In fact, the Ouyangs had invested a lot into finding the right doctor to save Ouyang Feifei. Sadly, they did not prevail.
In the end, it was Luo Ziling’s grandfather, Luo Liansheng, who managed to save her using mythical techniques.
Luo Ziling had a reason for assuming that Ouyang Feifei’s ailment was completely cured and would not resurface anymore. After being treated in the Northwest for two months, she took a substantial amount of medicine with her when she returned to the city.
Several years later, Luo Ziling had even updated her prescription according to her symptoms. Around the age of thirteen or fourteen, she finally stopped taking the medicine. After that, Luo Lianshen stopped treating her, so Luo Ziling assumed that she was completely healed.
He had not expected to hear that Ouyang Feifei was still suffering from the same disease. What’s more, his grandfather had even told the Ouyangs that Luo Ziling would be the one to continue her treatment.
He had no idea what his grandfather had in mind for him. As his grandfather had not personally told him about Ouyang Feifei’s disease, Luo Ziling was somewhat annoyed by the current situation.
Right now, he wanted to understand why Ouyang Feifei stopped taking her medicine back when she was thirteen or fourteen years. It might have been because of her hitting puberty, out of fear that the medication would interfere with her growth.
From a doctor’s perspective, the right time to continue her medication would be before she was married or expecting a baby. That would be the perfect time to complete the medical course and completely treat the disease, so that it wouldn’t interfere with her marriage or pregnancy in the future.
Luo Ziling was lost in his thoughts, and Ouyang Feifei remained silent too. Even though he was still quiet, shocked even, after learning about her persistent illness, he did not end the call.
Finally, he said, “I will find a time to stop by and check on you.”
“In that case, I thank you. This is my personal phone number. Feel free to call me,” replied Ouyang Feifei.
That was the end of it. She said her farewells and hung up.
Luo Ziling let out a heavy sigh. “Ugh… In the end, this connection to the Ouyang family is unbreakable.”
He could clearly imagine what Ouyang Feifei looked like right now. The ice-cold, emotionless expression on that flawless face… and her perfect figure that complemented her stance. It was such a pity for a woman like that to suffer from such an enigmatic disease.
“Bah, stop thinking about marriage. I have my own feelings to think about. I should just treat her like any other patient. And I should treat the Ouyangs as just a friend of the family,” thought Luo Ziling to himself.
As he was dwelling on his thoughts, his phone rang again. This time, it was Li Jing who was calling.
He quickly picked up and said, “Sister Li, to what do I owe this phone call?”
Somehow, talking to Li Jing made him feel much better. She ignored his teasing and got straight to the point.
“Little handsome boy, what are you doing? Why is it so noisy over there? Why didn’t you reply to my messages?”
“Ah ha. I am having some supper and drinking beer with some friends. I didn’t bother to check on my phone.”
“I see… Supper, huh,” said Li Jing. She audibly sighed in relief. “Here I thought you were in trouble or something.”
“Nothing of the sort,” said Luo Ziling.
But after just declaring that nothing had happened, he suddenly felt the urge to tell her about the fight.
“Well, I got involved in a fight with a few other students just a while ago. We’re fine. I’m fine. In fact, we’re drinking happily right now. The other guys are drunk. I’m still sober.”
“As long as you’re alright,” said Li Jing.
She gave him some advice, telling him not to drink too much and to rest early. Luo Ziling thanked her and hung up soon after. Two women had called him tonight, and this was odd, even for Luo Ziling.
Pulling down the notification tab on his phone, he saw Li Jing’s message as well as another one from the female friend named ‘Ye’. The two messages asked the same questions: How was he? What was he doing?
Another message came in, asking whether or not he was in trouble, since he was not replying. More and more, Luo Ziling felt like something odd was going on.
