Chapter 288 – Let’s Start By Making a Fake Demon King
“Luluna’s Magical Doll.”
While standing in a grove in the park, Luna cast a spell going by the name of Luluna’s Magical Doll, drawing out a portion of her mana to create a dark human figure. The human figure’s outline was the same as Luna’s. The only difference was that this human figure was entirely black and had no facial features.
“I remember this spell. Isn’t this a taboo created by a puppeteer? Although the taboo can be used to create a puppet matching the appearance of the caster’s soul, the puppet does not have any facial features, so it can’t be used as a replacement,” Little Death said, quickly recognizing the taboo Luna had used. She had followed multiple Demon Kings over the years, so she had an expansive knowledge of spells and taboos. “But for the created body to become pitch-black like this… Your maid seriously feels more like a Demon King than you do, Alice. Even the taboos she uses are converted to the dark attribute.”
That’s because she is a Demon King, Alice inwardly replied as she let out an awkward chuckle. The Demon King’s Power had converted all of Luna’s mana into the dark attribute. Hence, almost every spell Luna cast would carry the properties of dark mana.
Of course, that didn’t mean Demon Kings were incapable of using other attributes. After some training and adaptation, Demon Kings could also cast spells and taboos of other attributes. It was just that Luna had yet to begin training in other attributes. After all, she was only 18 years old this year. Generally, by the time a Demon King had fully acclimatized themselves with dark mana and started training in other attributes, they’d be around 30 years old already.
“It doesn’t matter even if the doll looks like this. Nobody will see its appearance so long as we cover it up,” Luna said as she took out a cloak from her backpack. This was the same cloak she had used in the Elven Forest when she was confronting Alice while “pretending” to be the Demon King.
After putting the cloak on the doll, the doll’s lack of facial features and its pitch-black body were mostly hidden from others. Although the doll’s legs remained exposed, letting others see them wasn’t a big problem.
Many spells would cause a change to the caster’s body when used. So, even if others took notice of the doll’s pitch-black legs, they would probably assume that the doll was casting some kind of spell.
“Now it looks relatively similar to the ‘Demon King’ who had previously appeared in the Elven Forest,” Alice commented, nodding in satisfaction after scrutinizing the cloaked doll. Once they had this “Demon King” run out and create some chaos, she’d be able to pretend to fall into the fountain in a panic. Although it would look somewhat awkward, her current appearance was only that of a little girl around thirteen or fourteen. Nobody would suspect her panicked reaction.
In reality, if all Alice wanted was to avoid catching the attention of others, she also had the option of visiting the park at night. However, the park’s surveillance cameras remained a problem. The cameras would spot her diving into the fountain. Although it was unlikely that anybody would bother looking through the surveillance footage when nothing had happened in the park, there was still the possibility of someone doing so. If that happened, there’d be a risk of her getting exposed.
Moreover, Alice didn’t wish to waste time waiting. She still needed to visit multiple locations and retrieve the items carrying the Demon King’s Power’s mana signature in the next few days. If she needed to wait until nighttime to retrieve the dagger in the fountain, it would mean that she’d have to prolong their stay in Bang Bang City until tomorrow.
After creating the fake Demon King, Alice and the others walked out of the grove and sat back on the park bench near the fountain as if nothing had happened. Of course, to prevent anyone from noticing the fake Demon King appearing from the grove they had just walked out of, Alice had asked Luna to have the fake Demon King move to walk around the grove for a moment before leaving it from a different location.
“Are you done yet?” Andusia’s depressed voice was transmitted into Alice’s ears. “My body absorbs water. If I stay here for too long, I will have to stay under the sun for a long time to get dry.”
“Your body really is troublesome.” Alice couldn’t help but sympathize with Andusia. Although Andusia’s body felt no different from a real person’s body to the touch, it still retained some wooden characteristics. If not for Andusia having mana, her body might even rot after soaking in water for too long. “We’ll be ready soon.”
The fake Demon King naturally couldn’t reveal itself and cause trouble as soon as Alice’s group had left the grove. If it did, others might link the fake Demon King to Alice’s group, defeating the purpose of going through all this trouble.
After waiting a while, Alice felt enough time had passed for the fake Demon King to come out and start causing a commotion. However, before getting Luna to control the fake Demon King, Alice turned to Little Death and asked, “By the way, what are you going to do once I jump into the fountain? Luna will have to stay outside to control the doll, but what about you? Will you jump into the fountain with me?”
“I cannot lie as an undead. If I am too nervous when I jump into the fountain, I might accidentally reveal our plan,” Little Death said, shaking her head. Then, she earnestly said to Alice, “Something like this had happened in the past. One of the Demon Kings I used to serve had me steal information from the humans. However, when I was fighting someone in the human realm, I got a little too nervous and subconsciously blurted out the entire plan. I ended up causing the Demon King to lose the war and get killed.”
“Holy crap, so you played such an important role in history?”
Alice’s eyes twitched when she heard Little Death’s tale. Almost every Demon King’s death was recorded in history books. Alice had also read about those deaths while learning about this world’s history. However, she had never heard of Little Death being mentioned in any history book, much less her involvement in a Demon King’s defeat and death. Though, that was probably because the archivists of that era didn’t know that an undead had indirectly contributed to the Demon King’s death.
“Wait, you say that you can’t lie, but you clearly said your ‘hand slipped’ when you threw Andusia into the water just now.” Alice grew confused when she suddenly recalled Little Death’s realistic act just now. “Isn’t that a lie?”
“Of course not.” Smiling, Little Death waved her hand and said, “That’s because I really did slip my hand—intentionally.”
