The Death List Novel - Chapter 9
Chapter 9 Shattered Starry Sky
“Hehe, this Russian fat pig weighs at least 240 pounds. One pig can take on two others, enough for those zombies to split up!”
Two prisoners came out from the opposite team, carefully observing Qin Lun and moving Chekov’s corpse. One of them dragged his foot and threw him to the corner of the corridor and the base hall. There were many zombies surrounding the corpses of the three federates.
After adding in Chekov, the four corpses could block the entrance of the passageway about seven meters away, blocking the group of corpses. Seeing the hundreds of zombies at the entrance of the corridor, the prisoners did not waste any more time and automatically split into two teams, pushing the iron gate at the exit of the base with all their might.
Apart from Qin Lun, who was severely injured in his calf and unable to exert any strength, even Lin Feng and Xiaolian had joined the team pushing the door and were working hard for their survival.
“Sigh!” The iron door pulley let out an ear-piercing sound of metal friction. The heavy iron door was finally pushed open and slid to both sides.
“Pushed it away, pushed it away!” The prisoners cried out excitedly, their cheers filled with the joy of escaping death.
“This … this … what kind of place is this?” However, when everyone saw what was happening outside the iron gate, their smiles froze on their faces, and their gazes revealed an uncontrollable shock!
Outside the iron gate of the base was not the vibrant primeval forest of the Great Xing’an Mountains. Everywhere he looked, there was the Gobi Desert. Strangely shaped rocky cliffs were like monsters, lying horizontally between this uninhabited world, just like the western desert of the United States of America in the old century.
As the earth enters the new century, with the development of science and technology, except for a few primeval forests and bipolar ice sheets, the deserts and wastelands of the old era have undergone environmental transformation in order to accommodate more and more people. Similar to the desolate Gobi Wilderness in front of them, people can only see it from ancient photographs.
However, this was not the most amazing place. The strangest thing was that a fault appeared in the entire continent a few kilometers away from them. In front of the continental fault was a vast cosmic starry sky. Within the quiet and deep starry sky, there were many stars that would occasionally light up and disappear.
However, upon closer inspection, these stars did not appear to be giant planets. Instead, they were floating continents of varying sizes, each covered in a spherical orange-yellow light barrier.
The distant floating continent was as vast as a firefly, while the nearest floating continent was as large as a millstone, and the mountains, rivers, and rivers on it could be clearly seen.
The exit of their base was actually in mid-air, at least thirty meters away from the ground. Apparently, the underground structure of the 91 District Base had risen to the Gobi Desert’s surface, and the exit of the passageway, which was originally flush with the ground, was in mid-air.
No wonder those who died turned into zombies! No wonder the Particle Light Gun in the hands of the federates was ineffective! No wonder all the modern instruments in the base were unusable! So this place is not Earth at all. It seems that even the laws of science are different from Earth!
The prisoners soon realized that the Gobi Desert, where District 91’s federal base was located, was probably also a floating continent. Very few of them had already thought of the spherical space-time domain above the base in Area 91. Their current situation must be related to the teleportation of space-time, but they didn’t know where the entire base had been teleported to.
“This isn’t Earth. Where are we?” A revived prisoner cried out in alarm.
“The four corpses were almost eaten clean by the group of corpses, and the exit of the safe passage was blocked. What should we do?”
“Climb down! Only by climbing down will there be a chance of survival!”
The prisoners quickly realized that they couldn’t stay here and wait to die. Several impatient death row prisoners immediately scrambled to the outer wall of the base entrance and climbed down.
Fortunately, the underground structure of the base seemed to be piled up on the Gobi Desert along with the surrounding rocks and soil, forming a steep hill, but there was still room for climbing and landing.
Lin Feng grabbed the iron bracket and scanned the steep “hillside” while Xiaolian held Qin Lun’s injured legs and followed closely behind him. This “small hill” with the underground buildings in Area 91 as its core and attached to rock and soil was not formed naturally and was very soft in many places.
The height of more than thirty meters was not high, but once one foot missed and fell from the steep slope, it would definitely be a near-death situation. They didn’t want to fall to their deaths on the deserted Gobi Desert just as they escaped from the zombies’ bloody mouths.
Without the threat of the corpses, the temporary squad of prisoners had been completely disbanded. All the survivors, including Qin Lun and the others, were left with twelve people.
The twelve of them formed a small group of only two or three people, each with the five special-grade murderers, the Decomposer, Qin Lun, the Disciple, Hansen, the Shepherd, Hill, the Fireworks, and Grant as their core.
It was not that the prisoners were unwilling to unite in this strange world, but that it was really difficult to achieve mutual trust between them. The five murderers had more or less psychological problems, so it was hard to guess what they were thinking. They weren’t normal people at all. Even the other prisoners who had no choice but to rely on them were unwilling to get too close to them.
Twenty minutes later, with Xiaolian’s help, Qin Lun finally descended to the ground. Stepping on the gravel of the Gobi Desert, a warm feeling rose from the soles of his shoes. Looking around, there were crimson-brown rocky cliffs everywhere. Apart from the occasional whistling of the wind blowing across the cliffs, the entire Gobi Desert was deathly silent, showing no signs of life.
Although there was no sun above his head, the orange-yellow light shield that enveloped the floating continent emitted intense light and heat, making everyone drowsy from the sun. Qin Lun and the others found a huge rock beneath the base and sat leaning against the wind to rest.
“Can we still go back?” Xiaolian hugged his knees and lowered his head, his shoulders trembling as he sobbed.
Lin Feng was speechless as he raised his head blankly, looking extremely depressed. He confirmed the bad news from several prisoners that his father had passed away. The prisoners had seen a zombie in a general’s uniform in the control hall of the base, and his father was the only general on the base.
Qin Lun gently closed his eyes and greedily breathed in the warm and dry fresh air. To him, as long as he could be free, the earth was no different from this strange world. The only thing he cared about was his sister who had been separated from him since childhood.
He hadn’t heard from his sister for more than ten years since that incident. Perhaps it was the best choice for her to keep her sister away from her and bear the happiness of the two of them alone. As for himself, who carried dozens of lives on his back, regardless of the truth of that matter, he had already embarked on the path of the murderer’s destiny, and he could never turn his head back.
As he thought about it, Qin Lun’s heart suddenly moved. He spread out his right hand and stared at the black oval pattern in his palm. After killing Chekov and gaining that cool aura, the egg-shaped pattern had been moving regularly. The refreshing aura seemed to originate from the egg-shaped pattern, circulating throughout his body like blood.
Every cycle would weaken this aura by a point, and it was now undetectable. However, every minute that this aura weakened, the exhaustion and pain on his body would disappear a little. It was as if new strength was surging out of his body, and even the injuries on his legs seemed to be rapidly recovering. It was as if this refreshing aura was very beneficial to him and was slowly strengthening his physique.
Qin Lun curiously stretched out his left thumb and stroked the oval pattern, wanting to feel the regular pulses. However, his eyes immediately widened and his heart throbbed. A simple black tablet appeared in the depths of his consciousness. Even its design was exactly the same as the ‘Death List’ that stored his information.
Following the reappearance of the “Death List”, the oval pattern on Qin Lun’s right palm changed, turning into a small skull. Moreover, two scarlet flames lit up in the empty eyes of the skull.
“Look, what’s over there?” Just as Qin Lun was about to use his consciousness to probe the Death List, a distant prisoner’s shout sounded in his ears.
As soon as Qin Lun’s attention was distracted, the Death List in the depths of his consciousness quietly retreated. Shaking his head, he stood up and looked into the distance.
In the depths of the Gobi Desert, more than ten kilometers away from the base building, a black line suddenly appeared. In just a few minutes, the black line turned into a dust dragon made of sand, rolling from far to near.
“It’s a native creature of this world!” Disciple Hansen’s expression changed as he shouted at all the prisoners.
As a mercenary, he had recognized that it was not a natural phenomenon, but was caused by a large number of objects travelling at great speed. For example: galloping horses, the ranks of mechanical vehicles, and so on.
The prisoners, who were originally scattered all over the place, quickly ran towards the center. At a time like this, regardless of whether they were willing or not, they had to unite and face the unknown fate that lay ahead.
When the prisoners gathered again, the dust dragon on the other side seemed to have noticed their existence, turning an arc in the Gobi Desert and heading straight for them.
“This is … a motorcycle?” When the Rolling Dust Dragon approached, the prisoners were stunned to discover that this was actually a convoy of dozens of different types of motorcycles, causing an uproar.
These locomotives come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Some are similar to Earth’s two-wheeled motorcycles of the old century, and there are technologically advanced single-wheeled rollers. There were also some tracked locomotives, and at the end of the convoy, everyone saw a giant multi-wheeled van that looked like a spider.
Since there are motorcycles, are they intelligent beings? The prisoners gathered together again, and their vigilance had risen to its peak.
“Sigh!” A four-wheeled motorcycle emerged from the motorcade, stopped in front of the prisoners, jumped out of the motorcade, and walked towards them in a large manner.
Its entire body was hidden under its hood, and a pair of thick motorcycle sunglasses almost covered half of its face. Behind him was a huge gun with a trumpet on its back. Two ~ bullet belts were crossed on its shoulders. It swung its arm and shook it three times. Its entire body emitted a domineering aura.
But … but … why … its chin was only enough to reach everyone’s calves and knees!
Looking at this tyrannical leader of the Pocket Motor Vehicle Party, all the prisoners had a sense of comedy that was both funny and ironic!
