The Death List Novel - Chapter 654
Chapter 654 Successor
Under the guidance of the young monk, everyone finally walked out of the city wall corridor through another magical water mirror door and entered the interior of Candlekeep.
After crossing the water mirror door, a colorful and vibrant garden appeared in front of everyone. It was clear that there was no one in charge of the garden, and all sorts of wondrous flowers and plants vigorously displayed their best side to the visitors.
Compared to some of the noble gardens that Qin Lun had seen before, although they weren’t combined into gorgeous patterns, or were neatly trimmed, a natural beauty flourished, causing the spectators to involuntarily miss them.
Of course, apart from the sight of the garden, the most attractive building in Candlekeep was the giant tower in the center of the castle. It was the central library of Candlekeep and the core of the entire Candlekeep.
The central library was a Gothic steeple tower. It was more than 20 meters taller than the Six-sided City Wall’s Mage Tower. It was the highest building in the entire island group of Candlekeep.
The bottom floor of the tower was a circular hall, covering an enormous area. The widest area on the left and right was close to 70 meters in diameter. From where Qin Lun and the others stood to the main entrance of the tower, there was a flat gravel road.
The main entrance of the tower was a conical arch. In front of the entrance, there was a protruding stone platform more than ten meters away. On top of it stood a book in hand. He wore a pointed mage’s hat and looked up at the old man’s stone statue in front of him. This was in memory of the Great Prophet Alandor.
There were more than ten relief patterns carved on the stone walls on both sides and above the arch. From the content, it seemed to be telling the history of Candlekeep from its establishment to the present.
Qin Lun and the others walked into the main entrance of the library with astonishment. The hall of the library was very spacious. The dome was almost tens of meters tall, and it should occupy one-third of the height of the tower.
At the edge of the hall, the gentle corridor circled around the wall. There were upward and downward corridors leading to the underground part of the tower. This was a gigantic climbing structure.
The strange thing was that the corridor had no stairs, but a small slope. According to the monk leading the way, the cancellation of the stairs was to prevent those immersed in thought from falling off their feet. This was truly a consideration for Zhou Dao.
Portraits of humans, Elves, and even Dwarves hung on the walls of the upward corridor. In short, there were portraits of various intelligent races.
Mastasia recognized some of the figures in the portraits. She said they were well-known historical figures from all races, and most of them were learned scholars.
Scholars dressed in monastery robes, books, or mage robes could occasionally be seen walking by. Most of them had thoughtful expressions on their faces, and they almost ignored outsiders like Qin Lun.
“This way please!” The monk who led the way for Qin Lun and the others smiled and led everyone to the spiral corridor deep underground.
“Hey, Idrea, Elistine … you don’t want to leave me alone, do you?” While everyone was looking around, Linda ran towards them out of breath.
This little girl, who did not know how old she was, had become increasingly close to her companions during this adventure. The strange thing was that the person who had the best relationship with her was not the Blood Stabbing Trio that she had taken care of, but Idrea, a follower of Lady Lauvita, followed by Elves, the great beauty of Elistine.
“Haha, Linda, didn’t your teacher punish you?” Asked Mustacha teasingly.
“Alas, forget it. My teacher scolded me fiercely and even gave me a lot of homework. I guess I’ll be copying books in Candlekeep in the next few decades after this is over.” Linda’s face fell and she said with a sad expression.
“Oh, after this matter is over? So your teacher allowed you to go to the North?” Idria sensed Linda’s voice and asked in surprise.
“Yes, the teacher said that everyone has a responsibility for world peace! Candlekeep also has to do his best, but he doesn’t have time. He can only let me represent love and justice and try many evil organizations like the Santalin Society.” The little girl raised her fist and said with a solemn and sacred expression.
“Pu!” Seeing Linda’s serious expression, the three beauties in the team couldn’t help but laugh.
Qin Lun and the other two murderers looked at each other and smiled. They knew that Linda was lying, but they had no intention of investigating further. Regardless of what Linda’s teacher was thinking, as long as Linda didn’t help the Santalin Society, they would be happy to have more powerful Dragon Vein mages on their team.
As they walked down the corridor, Qin Lun and the others went deeper and deeper underground. Even though it was far away from the ground, the air here was still incomparably fresh. The corridor was inlaid with magic crystal lamps that emitted a bright orange-yellow light.
After walking for an unknown amount of time, doors with runes inscribed on them began to appear on both sides of the corridor. According to the young monks leading the way, this was the residence of some scholars who liked silence, and some of them were storage rooms for ancient books of a special kind.
After another quarter of an hour, Qin Lun and the others finally came to an end. A spacious hall space appeared in front of them. The light in the hall was unusually dark, and one could see the ancient and heavy stone doors all around the hall in plenty of shadows.
“Please try your best to be quiet here. The surrounding stone doors are the tombs of scholars that will forever rest in Candlekeep.” The young monk whispered to everyone.
“Why did you arrange the tomb here? Isn’t Candlekeep afraid that visitors will disturb the eternal sleeping scholar?” Qin Lun asked in a low voice.
The monk glanced at Qin Lun and replied softly, “There is a tomb in the deeper parts of Candlekeep, where no one can enter. And the tombs arranged here are the wills left behind by these scholars when they were alive.”
“When they were alive, they devoted all their time to the God of Knowledge, Ogma. Instead, they didn’t leave behind any legacies. Thus, after their deaths, they hoped that visitors to Candlekeep would meet the conditions and inherit their mantle.”
“What are the conditions?” Qin Lun asked curiously.
“Every scholar who sleeps forever is different. Some just leave a puzzle in front of the tomb. As long as someone can solve the puzzle, they can enter the tomb and take their belongings. Others rely on their bloodline. If their descendants or relatives come, the magic mechanism hidden in the tomb will react.”
This time, Linda took over the topic and smiled. “Anyway, any conditions can exist! If you want to find opportunities, the guide can also take you around here for a while, but not for too long.”
“Forget it, don’t cause any complications. It’s better to go to the teleportation array as soon as possible!” Mastasia urged from the side.
“Of course, you have already paid a sufficient price. Everything is as you wish.” The young monk smiled and led everyone to the corridor behind the hall.
However, just as the procession passed by a certain tomb, a heavy stone door that looked ordinary suddenly shone brightly, causing everyone to be shocked.
“No way, such dog blood!” Everyone, including Linda and the young monk, couldn’t help but widen their eyes. According to what Linda said just now, one of them is the descendant of a scholar who will forever sleep in this tomb.
“Anyway, please stay here for a moment. I want to check your bloodline and see which visitor can inherit the inheritance of this Candlekeep ancestor.” The young monk’s expression was solemn as he insisted that everyone should come to the front of the tomb one by one.
“It won’t take long!” Linda also spoke for the monk.
“If one of us takes the items from the tomb, do we need to pay another price?” Qin Lun asked with a frown.
“No need. The things in these tombs do not belong to Candlekeep. They are the personal belongings of those scholars.” The monk and Linda shook their heads at the same time. “Candlekeep only obeyed their will so that their heritage would not be cut off. This is the only thing Candlekeep can do for them.”
Hearing Linda’s words, everyone had no reason to object. One by one, they cut their fingers and let the blood drip into a stone groove in front of the tomb door.
Of course, Qin Lun’s three Apostle weren’t descendants of the bloodline. Their blood dripped into the stone slot without any reaction. The next two Elistine beauties, Masta Xia and Elves, also did not meet the requirements. Everyone’s gazes immediately focused on the last person.
“Me?” Idrea’s expression was a little complicated as she hesitated to step forward.
“It doesn’t matter, Idrea. Perhaps the scholar who resides in the tomb forever is one of your distant ancestors.” Linda smiled and encouraged.
“After joining Lauvita Church, I have long since abandoned my family and family background. There are no more seniors, and I don’t want any relatives.” Idrea sighed, but still refused to verify her bloodline.
“It doesn’t matter whether you admit your bloodline or not. Take out the remains of the scholar in the tomb first. If you really don’t want it, leave it to Candlekeep for safekeeping.” Qin Lun’s eyes lit up as he pushed Idrya to the entrance of the tomb.
When Idrea’s blood dripped into the groove, it produced a magical reaction as expected. The bright red drop of blood gradually lit up with a red glow, like a small blood-colored orb rolling around in the groove.
“Ka ka ka ka” The heavy stone door of the tomb let out a mechanical sound and slowly opened inward. After Idria was pushed by the crowd, the tomb door closed again.
However, according to the monks, there was no danger in the tomb. As long as Idrea took out the inheritance left behind by the scholar, the tomb door would open again.
A moment later, the stone door of the tomb opened again, and Idrea walked out of it with a strange expression. Everyone noticed that she was holding an ancient ruby ring in her hand.
After coming out, Idrea did not give the ring to the monk in Candlekeep. Instead, she wore it directly on her right middle finger, seemingly choosing to accept the inheritance.
Seeing that the female knight was somewhat silent, everyone cleverly didn’t ask her anything, as if this had never happened.
