The Death List Novel - Chapter 23
Chapter 23 Frankenstein
Chi! Qin Lun lit the oil lamp in his hand and illuminated the small basement.
Surrounding the basement were several long tables filled with glassware, mostly beakers and rubber ducts, the only medical research equipment left in the Stan family. Apart from a few medicines that Wellington had kept in his medical kit, in this day and age, it could be said that these glassware were more valuable than the dilapidated little building itself.
However, Qin Lun’s gaze did not stop on these things. He did not understand the medical system of this world, and these things were of no value to him at all. His gaze was quickly attracted by the operating table in the middle of the basement.
There was a corpse lying on the operating table. After seeing the corpse, Qin Lun sighed. He finally understood why the entire building had become an environment where humans could not survive.
The corpse had been dissected, and its open belly had not yet been sutured. It had rotted and fermented into a paste of organs, flowing with dark green jelly-like substances. The entire basement was filled with a fishy stench. It seemed that Qin Lun had found the source of the poison gas in the small building.
Qin Lun did not hesitate any longer. He quickly walked to the corner of the basement, picked up Wellington’s medical kit and a bucket-sized bottle of thin-necked reagent, and immediately returned upstairs.
After snatching the medicine kit and the reagent bottle out of the small building, Qin Lun took a deep breath and rushed into the small building again. He brought out a few basic medical books, a large wooden basin and a small leather box.
Inside the small suitcase were several sets of changing clothes. Those few medical books could give Qin Lun a general understanding of the world’s medical system. As for the reagent bottles, they were filled with medical alcohol.
Qin Lun stripped his clothes naked again in three or two strips, leaving only his underwear, along with the change of clothes in the small suitcase, in the big wooden basin. Then, he drew a bucket of water from the well in front of the small building and diluted some of the medical alcohol in the reagent bottle and poured it into a large wooden basin.
Frank did not inquire about his master’s strange behavior. He could vaguely guess that this was a precautionary measure after seeing more medical research in Wellington. He went to the back of the small building to bring some chopped wood, built a campfire far away from the basin, and put up a drying rack with wooden poles.
Qin Lun opened the medicine chest and wiped away all the utensils in the medicine chest with an alcohol cotton wool. At the same time, he submerged his consciousness into Wellington’s remaining memories.
Wellington had been dead for three days, and his memories were incomplete. Only the deepest impressions remained in his rotting mind. The medical kit, the pocket in the bedroom that contained the last of his savings, was a few of them.
From his memories, Kieran could tell that the world he was in was similar to an era between the late Middle Ages and modern times. According to the time period, it was roughly from the 15th century to the 18th century, and most of the scientific and cultural level was close to this stage.
The world has glass, clocks, looms, gunpowder and other modern scientific inventions, in the Renaissance and capitalism in its infancy. Although no antibiotics have been officially discovered in medicine, some highly skilled doctors have already obtained antibiotic-like drugs from plant extracts.
However, this plant, which could obtain antibiotics, was extremely difficult to cultivate and the extraction process was extremely complex. The value of plant antibiotics was more than ten times higher than that of gold. Within the medical kit in Wellington, there was a violet-colored medicine that was an antibiotic.
This medicine was called Wisteria Mixture, and there were only less than 30 ml left in the test tube. In previous treatments, Wellington did not give the drug to the sick, not even to himself. By the time he realized that something was wrong, he had already lost his last chance to save his life due to a high fever.
In Wellington’s eyes, this antibiotic was a panacea. However, Kieran did not believe in the effects of this antibiotic. He had already seen the tragic state of the corpse in the operating room. He did not think that a small tube of antibiotics would be enough to resist the dark green jelly substance. In his opinion, the power of that thing was comparable to a biological weapon, and it was also a high-end biological weapon that had a very short time to die.
The only thing that surprised Qin Lun was that Wellington’s incomparably normal memories were mixed with other “abnormal” memories. Wellington was convinced that there was a creature in this world that could not be explained scientifically. He called them witches.
Even though he had never seen it with his own eyes, Wellington believed that witches could use dark magic to drive all sorts of magical creatures and hide in sparsely populated forests, mountains, and swamps.
After checking Wellington’s memories, Qin Lun sunk his mind into his first foreign mission. This mission was displayed in red on the death list, and it was very eye-catching.
“Apostle 70053, your first alien mission is to save Stephen Albert. The mission objective is within 30 kilometers of you and the mission duration is 30 natural days. The mission base reward is a shattered Law Crystal. Additional reward is given as the mission progresses. Mission failure penalty is 30 Longevity Soul points deducted.”
It was indeed a very simple task! Qin Lun shrugged his shoulders. It was just a little strange that he had a murderer save someone!
“Change your clothes and clean your hair and beard with this!”
Qin Lun put on his dried clothes again, took out a few bigger T-shirts, and handed Xiaodao to Frank.
Since he had obtained Wellington’s storyline identity, he had to make good use of it. During this epidemic period, a doctor, even an unlicensed doctor, would be very popular, and he should be able to find clues to the mission objective very soon.
“This … Young Master, I think it’s good to look like this now. There’s no need to cut your hair and beard!” Frank said evasively.
“Just do what I said!” Qin Lun looked at the hunchback servant sternly. After spending the night together, he was now a little familiar with Frank’s temperament. This servant’s personality was a bit inferior and closed. Other than the Stan family, no one could accept him.
After Wellington died, it was estimated that the hunchbacked ugly man would not be ill and would not be able to integrate into human society. He could only live alone in the wild until he died of old age or in the mouth of a wild beast.
Qin Lun wanted to use Wellington’s identity to inquire about Stephen Albert in a few nearby towns. Naturally, he couldn’t follow a barbarian behind him. Even if he was ugly, he had to be human.
However, when Frank used a knife to cut his hair and shave his beard, Qin Lun’s expression was a little strange. He now understood why Frank was reluctant to straighten up.
The hunchback servant’s face was potholed. From his cheeks to his chin, he didn’t say anything about the green stubble on his face. He had a pair of triangular eyes, one big and one small, and his huge nostrils were facing the sky. A large mouth was full of incomplete sharp yellow teeth, and it actually tilted fiercely.
To be so ugly and soul-stirring, it could be considered a miracle! Recalling Frank’s name and the Stan Clan’s surname, Qin Lun felt even more awkward. This was the alien version of Frankenstein!
No wonder, in Wellington’s memories, Frank had always been unkempt and never revealed his true face. With his respectful expression, it was even more unacceptable to clean up than not to clean up.
Frank turned his head away from Qin Lun’s surprised gaze. Wellington was not only his master, he was also a brother who grew up together. The strange gaze from his family filled the hunchbacked ugly man’s heart with frustration.
“Pa!” Qin Lun slapped the back of Frank’s head and scolded, “It’s more deterrent than I thought! Ugly guy, you’ll scare the people in town to death.”
“Hehe!” Frank’s heart instantly warmed up. He turned around and smiled embarrassedly.
“Put on your mask. We need to find a small town to stay in before dark!” Qin Lun took out a large cotton mask from the medical kit and handed it to Frank to wear on his face to hide his frightening appearance.
“Young Master, do we not live at home?” Frank asked curiously.
“We can’t stay at home anymore. It’s filled with epidemic viruses. If we stay longer, people will die!” Qin Lun shook his head and looked at Frank. He turned around and walked towards the campfire. He picked up a burning stick of wood and handed it to the hunchback servant. “Go burn it!”
“Burn it?” Frank widened his triangular eyes, holding the fire stick in his hand, but he hesitated. Even though the hunchbacked ugly man had spent his entire life in the attic and firewood shed, the Stanley Pavilion was still his only home for him.
Qin Lun picked up another burning match and threw it towards the building. Very quickly, the flames rose everywhere in Stan Xiaolou, and the faces of the master and servant looked uncertain in the light of the flames. Frank’s face was filled with reluctance as he stared blankly at the small building with flames soaring into the sky.
“When we go to the small town to earn money, you will have another small building. I will find a woman for you. I guarantee for the Stan Clan!” Qin Lun said with a smile for the first time.
“Granny? Other than Young Master and Old Master, no one likes to stay with a monster!” Frank said dejectedly.
“Frank, you’re not ugly. Many people are uglier than you. It’s just that everyone doesn’t realize it!” Qin Lun’s eyes lit up as he smiled and said, “It’s not like my appearance can’t be changed. Although my cooking isn’t very good, I can still make it look good for you!”
“As long as he can follow Young Master all the time, Frank will be satisfied. In the future, he will be able to help Young Master take care of Young Master!” Frank grinned foolishly.
“By the way, Frank, do you know a man named Stephen Albert?” Qin Lun asked casually. He didn’t expect Frank to give him any answers. The hunchbacked servant hadn’t been to town many times since he was a child. Other than the corpses of the Stans and the graves, he probably didn’t recognize a few normal people.
“Frank has never heard of Stephen’s people!” The hunchbacked ugly man shook his head as expected. However, he frowned and pondered for a while before giving Qin Lun another unexpected answer.
“But Lord Stan used to mention another man named Albert, Baron Thomas Albert!”
