The Death List Novel - Chapter 1
Chapter 1 Death Row
“Clang!” The iron gate leading to section E of the prison opened automatically. Seven tall and large prison guards walked into the hallway of the cell area. Apart from the leader, the other four were heavy-duty prison guards with riot shields and protective caps. The last two were carrying a rectangular locker.
The prisoners in Area E are basically felons, and unlike the cells in other areas where light prisoners are held, the doors here are made of integral iron doors with visiting windows only.
Although mankind had entered the Astronautical Age, the prisoners in prison were not qualified to enjoy the convenience brought about by high technology. In the cells of Handan Heavy Penalty Prison, there were no stereo projection entertainment programs, no radio stations, and no green food cultivated in outer space greenhouses.
Prisoners deprived of their civil rights eat tasteless synthetic food and sleep on antique double-decker beds from hundreds of years ago. Apart from labour, the prisoners’ usual activities were fitness and reading.
Of course, aside from the crude furniture used by prisoners, the facilities used to supervise prisoners in Handan Heavy Penalty Prison were all the most modern high-tech products. Each prisoner’s ankle was fitted with a foot-chain signal transmitter. The shell was made of titanium alloy and was locked to the ankle by a magnetic code. Unless there was a password or the soles of his feet were cut off, he would not be able to take it off.
The corridors and corners of the prison were filled with surveillance devices. Even ventilation pipes and sewerage systems had miniature spider robots patrolling them. It could be said to be a heavenly web. Since the establishment of Handan Prison, there has been no successful escape in the history of the prison for more than a hundred years.
Fluorescent lights flickered in the corridor of the cell, making the silent corridor look a little gloomy. Even the prison guards who had been working here for a long time were unable to withstand the strange atmosphere in District E.
The seven prison guards did not stop in the corridor of District E, but quickly passed through several iron gates and arrived at District E in District E, the solo “luxury box” for felons-death row.
After entering the death row, one could clearly see that the expressions of the seven prison guards were getting more and more serious. The team was filled with a solemn atmosphere. After passing through the corridor on death row, the seven of them arrived at the final restricted area of Area E.
The so-called restricted area of Area E was very small, and there were only three confinement rooms in the entire area. The restricted area was slightly lower than the other cells, where sewerage pipes were assembled, and the corridor fluorescent lights were artificially dimmed with orange.
The entire environment was cold and humid, emitting a faint stench. Under the dim light, the sewage pipe blocked out a large area of eerie and terrifying dark corners. The deathly silent atmosphere around it caused everyone to tremble in fear, and their hearts were filled with unease.
These three cells were mainly used to punish inmates who did not comply with the prison rules. They walked from the dark walkway where the heavily incarcerated prisoners and death row inmates were held to the restricted area here. Even the unforbidden murderers would be filled with panic. Prisoners with poor psychological qualities would even be scared to the point of collapse and would no longer dare to violate the prison rules.
In practice, cells are not regular cells and are vacant most of the time. However, in the third year after the murderer Qin Lun entered the Handan Heavy Penalty Prison, after killing five roommates and two prison guards, he was the first death row inmate in the Handan Heavy Penalty Prison’s more than a hundred years of history to turn his cell into a regular cell.
When they arrived at the innermost cell, the faces of the seven prison guards revealed a hint of nervousness for the first time. They carefully pulled out the ionic batons from their waist.
There was no modern high-tech password lock in the confinement room. The guard in the lead gently opened the palm-sized window above the metal door and looked into the confinement room.
Unlike ordinary cells, section E has no windows and only fist-sized ventilation openings that connect the ventilation ducts of the other cells. Surprisingly, not only did this confinement room not have the damp stench of the outer corridor, it even looked warm and dry, and it even had the fragrance of an air freshener.
The roof of the cell was fitted with built-in bulletproof fluorescent lamps and two rows of antique bookshelves piled with paper books were placed in a corner. There was no shortage of desks, beds, and toilets. Apart from a few books, there was even a pair of wooden chess pieces on the desk.
A skinny-looking young man was sitting at his desk with his back to the cell door, flipping through a thick book in his hand.
The guard heaved a sigh of relief, took off the key from the armor belt, and inserted it into the keyhole in the iron door. The heavy cell door was suddenly pulled open, and the four heavy-duty prison guards carefully bent over and entered the cell with their shields.
“Qin Lun, it’s time!” The leading guard held his baton tightly and stood three meters away from the young man, shouting in a deep voice.
The young man gently closed the book. Under the bright light, the five words “Behavioral Psychology” appeared on the cover of the book. Looking carefully at the books on the shelves and desks, it seemed that there was an entire system of books on clinical medicine and psychology in this special confinement room.
After closing the book, the young man stood up, put his hands on his head, and turned around. Under the light, an ordinary looking, thin youth appeared in front of everyone.
Killer Qin Lun was surprised to see a pair of clear and pure eyes. Perhaps it was because of the lack of sunlight all year round, his skin was fair, especially his hands, and his fingers were slender and white like jade. From the looks of it, this murderer was an ordinary malnourished youth.
Ever since Qin Lun entered the Handan Heavy Penalty Prison, he had broken many of the prison’s hidden rules. He also killed felons and death row inmates in the same cell as him, including two prison guards who had died in the line of duty.
Qin Lun was seriously traumatized and had schizophrenia. The confinement cell that frightened the other prisoners to the point of drooling had no effect on the murderers at all. After paying a high price in life, Handan Prison, on the advice of a psychiatrist, provided him with a relatively “friendly” environment.
In the confinement room where Qin Lun was being held, there were electric heating pipes installed underground, which were specially used for dehumidifying. Air fresheners were regularly added to the ventilation holes. The prison even provided books and chess for Qin Lun to stabilize his mental state.
In fact, unless Qin Lun was strongly stimulated by the outside world, his IQ would normally be higher than an ordinary person’s. Ever since Handan Prison had provided him with books, Qin Lun had only used five years to complete the general courses from elementary school to university.
However, since he started studying clinical medicine and psychology at the age of eighteen, it has also had a negative impact on the prison. No psychiatrist could accurately determine his state of mind.
The guard in the lead looked at the murderer’s bright eyes and sighed inwardly. He raised a black-framed screen as thin as a cardboard in his hand and began to read.
This cardboard-shaped black-framed screen contained a simple light brain and stored Kieran’s details. Normally, after a federal court handed down a death sentence, prison guards would use the tablet to relay sentencing orders to death row inmates, which inmates jokingly called “death lists.”
‘”Qin Lun, male, 20 years old, formerly Joey Foster. The Supreme Federal Court has decided to dismiss the stay of death appeal, uphold the sentence, convict him of multiple homicide, permanently deprive him of his citizenship, and execute him at 7 p.m. today!”
Following the loud and clear announcement, the two prison guards carrying the rectangular cabinet opened the cabinet, revealing a set of steel equipment inside. Several prison guards took out these steel parts that looked like mecha parts and put them on Qin Lun’s body. Not long after, an “armored knight” appeared in front of the prison guard with only his eyes exposed to the outside world.
This was a confinement device with steam power inside. The prisoner could only rely on the steam power to slowly walk. Even a simple sitting would require a delay of three seconds.
Puchi! The steel monster’s knees curved and spat out a small stream of white steam. Qin Lun, who was wearing a steel mask, walked out of the cell.
The murderer with the steam trap looked like a ridiculous clumsy bear, slowly walking in the corridor of Area E under the pincer attacks of four heavy-duty prison guards.
The heavy footsteps attracted the attention of the prisoners in Area E. In the corridor that the group of people passed by, many prisoners stared coldly at Qin Lun and the others, sticking close to the cell door.
Was this the number one card in the Handan Heavy Penalty Prison? The prisoners’ eyes flickered with Mo Ming’s complicated light.
“Bring him a black cloth hood!” Looking at the last iron gate in Area E, the lead guard turned around and instructed.
…
Handan Serious Penalty Prison is a group of towers hundreds of feet above the ground. Between the towers in E and D, there is a huge steel track towering into the clouds.
The track looks a little like a roller coaster ride, and the steeper the ramp, the steeper it gets. At the top of the orbit, the slope had reached 90 degrees, and it was at a right angle to the bottom. This was one of the core technologies of the human race in the Genesis Era, the Heavenly Orbit!
Heavenly orbit is a long-range teleportation device, divided into provincial, regional and star levels, in addition to the legendary trans-galactic Heavenly Orbit. The base of the orbit has a sealed transport module. The transport module will be accelerated by the orbit and eventually become a free light state. It will be sent into the middle-level subspace of the material space and the anti-material space, so as to achieve the purpose of long-distance mass transfer.
At the other end of the transport module, there was also a sky orbit that was used to receive the transport module. Apart from maglev vehicles, Genesis humans generally used orbits to travel and transport across provinces. Electric trains and civilian passenger planes had long been on display in museums.
Chi! The door to the base of the Heavenly Orbit slid open, and a spacious and bright modern corridor appeared in front of everyone. In contrast, the corridor in section E of the prison was as damp and fishy as a sewer.
The guards pulled Qin Lun’s steam trap into the orbit’s teleportation capsule and removed the black cloth hood of the murderer.
The bright eyes revealed in the steel mask rolled slightly as they sized up the situation beside them. It was an oval hall with a touch-type workbench at the edge and a huge LCD screen at the front.
“The teleportation target has entered. Activate the particle analysis engine!”
As the group entered the teleportation module, a gentle female voice sounded in the hall. It was the synthetic voice of the Heavenly Orbit Light Brain.
“Particle scan complete, confirm remote boot signal, start 30 seconds countdown …”
“… 3, 2, 1! Teleportation begins!”
Amidst the gentle female voice, the teleportation cabin suddenly began to tremble violently. A gorgeous spiral light shone from the top of the sky orbit of Handan Heavy Punishment Prison. The teleportation module that flew into the sky turned into a meteor and instantly disappeared into the air, entering the mysterious subspace.
