Chapter 37: Friends Made From The Brink Of Death

It was the same thing back in the university guys’ hostel. He shat his pants upon seeing the spirit of Zhang Mingyu. Even up until now, whenever Li Xianyu sat on the toilet bowl, he occasionally glimpsed downwards… He never paid that much attention to something like this before, not even women.
Ever since he was exposed to the new world, it had never been kind to him. Zhang Mingyu had caused him to develop a fear of toilet bowls; the Bunshinsaba had caused him to develop a fear of public toilets; Qingqing had caused him to develop a fear of essence extraction, while Great-Grandma had caused him to fear women in general.
After a quiet yet terrifying five minutes, midnight finally struck. Li Xianyu sat up straight on the cover of the toilet bowl, his muscles clenching in fear. He scanned the darkness in front of him with great vigil, especially the area near the adjacent cubicle.
He wasn’t sure whether to feel lucky or not. The Bunshinsaba had not appeared. Everything was peaceful. There were no strange movements in the toilet, or any suspicious shadows.
Perhaps, she had ventured out to hunt for her prey tonight and would not be back. Perhaps, she had left this place after she had killed someone. Countless theories flashed across Li Xianyu’s mind. He heaved a sigh of relief at not having to confront the Bunshinsaba. It was a terrifying prospect indeed.
“I’ll wait a while more. If it doesn’t appear, you can’t blame me. I can say that nothing happened on the report,” Li Xianyu whipped out his mobile phone and browsed the “Ancient Demon” software.
Let’s look at what the other elders are up to today.
The content there had no value. The elders seemed to view discussing their missions as a taboo. After a few sentences, the conversation would die down. Perhaps, the company had imposed confidentiality rules on the nature of the missions.
Li Xianyu had initially planned to delve deeper into the new world through chatting with them.
These spirits may have appeared fierce, but in front of the senior demon descendants, they were practically insignificant.
San Wu and Great-Grandma had said that aggrieved spirits were low class creatures, which were not worthy of their attention.
In this case, how broad was the demon descendants community exactly?
The Walking Piledriver: “Elders, I’m in the university’s girls’ hostel. How about a live stream?”
Fingering Techniques Similar to Kato Eagle: “Despicable. However, if you insist, I wouldn’t mind.”
Medical Department’s Vice President, Li Shizhen: “Not walking down the right path when you’re young. If you insist, we have no choice.”
Fire God: “Although I don’t condone these actions, the choice is yours.”
Li Bai: “I’m happy to see a friend from afar. If there’s a stream, let’s watch it then.”
King Kong: “*pukes*”
Tong Tong: “Pervert.”
File Manager Mo Fei: “Tong Tong, still awake at this hour? Don’t you have school tomorrow?”
Tong Tong: “I have school. It’s just that… a boy living upstairs died in a car accident a few days ago. He came back tonight, and started to search for eyeballs in my house. He stood at my bedside, looking at me and asking me if I had seen his eyeballs. I chased him out. He’s at my window sill, still looking at me. His left eyeball is missing. His face is smashed in. I can’t sleep.”
A little boy outside the window sill, with a mangled face, missing left eyeball, and bleeding, all while looking at the little girl in the room…
A cold shiver went down Li Xianyu’s spine.
The Walking Piledriver: “Elders, I’m not going to stream that. I’m in the hostel to capture a ghost, do you want a live stream of that?”
Li Bai: “Ordinary and uninteresting.”
Fingering Techniques Similar to Kato Eagle: “No, scram.”
Medical Department Vice President, Li Shizhen: “Young man, your thoughts determine your destiny.”
Fire God: “I’m old. I have no interest in this boring stuff.”
The Walking Piledriver: “I’m a little afraid. Elders, do you have any methods to deal with aggrieved spirits?”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “They are quite troublesome to deal with. Normally, we use the power of our blood to exorcise them. We lack a proper technique to deal with them. However, the Taoists and Buddhists have a few secret techniques. There are disciples from Maoshan Sect in this chat. I’ll help you ask them… eh? Where’s the Magic Symbol Gentleman? Has he left the chat or changed his name?”
File Manager Mo Fei: “He’s no longer around. Last month, he was shifted to Xiangxi Division. HR has agreed as well. It’ll be hard to see him again.”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “Why is he heading to Xiangxi? He’s all good. Doesn’t he know how many colleagues want a HQ role? *expresses shock*”
Li Bai: “Battle Lady, he was sent to Xiangxi to investigate a homicide. After he came back, he wrote a report requesting to be posted there.”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “What reasons?”
Fingering Techniques Similar to Kato Eagle: “I know, he found love. However, the other party is a supernatural being, she can only stay at Xiangxi.”
Li Xianyu was engrossed in the chat. He typed, “What’s a supernatural being?”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “Things that are out of the human dimension.”
Li Bai: “Oh, no wonder. The last time I asked him, he said he had made a friend on the brink of death. This fella is different from the other Maoshan priests. He’s very gentle to supernatural beings. Has he married a pretty female ghost? Hoho, how lucky.”
File Manager Mo Fei: “That’s the power of love.”
Tong Tong: “A female spirit. How envious.”
King Kong: “What’s there to be envious about? Women are shit. Their spirits are shit as well. His brains must have been fried, giving up a bright future like that.”
The few women and a loli in the chat gave a disdainful response.
Fire God: “I feel like ‘friends made from the brink of death’ have a connotation now.”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “Err… Fire God, you realised it only now.”
The other people swiftly agreed with her.
Fire God sent a flurry of “hearty laughter” emojis. Although he was advanced in age, he felt young at heart. When a human was in love with a spirit, it was a friendship between a living being and a dead being.
The Walking Piledriver: “Speaking about Xiangxi, I think it’s famous for its undertakers. He goes over to investigate a homicide case… I think there’s another connotation behind this.”
Fire God: “What connotation?”
The Walking Piledriver: “Haven’t you guys thought of this before? The other party may be a corpse.”
The group suddenly fell into silence.
The system showed: “The Walking Piledriver has been suspended from sending messages to the chat for three hours.”
Li Xianyu was speechless.
All his explanations were reasonable and scientific. Why ban me?!
After the silence, the elders in the chat began to gossip.
Li Bai: “Is this newcomer a demon? Let’s kick him.”
Fire God: “Li Bai is right.”
King Kong: “Fire God has a point.”
Fingering Techniques Similar to Kato Eagle: “Kick, kick!”
Thunderbolt Battle Lady: “…”
File Manager Mo Fei: “I’m certain that his nickname would be ‘Li Shizhen’s skin’ in future.”
Medical Department Vice President Li Shizhen: “You dare.”
Li Xianyu continued to scroll through the gossip messages in the chat. Suddenly, he felt the temperature in the toilet drop, but was uncertain if it was just an illusion.
“Do you have toilet paper?”
Suddenly, a woman’s voice echoed out in the quiet toilet.
“I don’t have…” Li Xianyu answered subconsciously as his voice slowly drowned.
There was no one else in the toilet but him. Who was the woman that was speaking?
The Bunshinsaba was here…
Li Xianyu’s butthole tightened to the point where it was enough to break any faeces coming out of it. He had no time to turn on his torchlight, choosing to flash the light coming from his phone in front of him. What he saw made him breathless.
In the opposite cubicle, a woman’s hand could be seen moving towards his cubicle. Her hand was white, making it look like a layer of cement had been applied on top of it. Her nails were black as well, almost making contact with Li Xianyu’s foot.
The most terrifying part was that a woman’s face was beside the hand. Her face and hands were at the wrong places. It was almost as if there was a woman at the opposite cubicle squatting down, then putting her head on the floor and extending her hand out to say, “Do you have toilet paper?”
“Do you have toilet paper…?” the woman asked spookily.
The phone’s light shone on her face. Beneath her pale skin, lots of greenish-black veins protrude out of her face. Her eyeballs were missing, only the white parts of her eye remained.
Li Xianyu felt his blood freeze. A thought flashed across his mind as he took out his badge from his bag and handed it over to the woman. “I don’t have paper, but… this is for you.”
The female spirit did not expect someone to really give her something. Subconsciously, she received the item from Li Xianyu.
That instant, it was as if her hand had touched some burning metal. Green smoke started to billow from within her.
A ear-piercing scream then reverberated around the toilet.
Li Xianyu seized the opportunity to run out of his cubicle as he shouted towards the phone, “She’s out! She’s out! San Wu, help!”
As he finished his words, his right leg was suddenly held back by something.
His body became rigid as his blood froze. Face pale, he turned back to see that the female spirit had grabbed his legs. She was sprawled on the floor, as a pool of blood began to form around her. She looked up and said in a menacing manner, “No paper? Then give me your life…”
The flesh on her face started to decompose swiftly as maggots started to stream out of her face. Her eyeballs fell to the floor as black-coloured blood spewed out of her mouth.
On the ground floor, San Wu turned around to look at Great-Grandma, who was leaning on her shoulder.
Great-Grandma squinted and replied, “Minions will spawn in 30 seconds!”
San Wu was dumbfounded.
Great-Grandma sighed. “If he doesn’t get into danger now, how will that idiot improve? Who gave him that fucking name? It’s ruining my family’s reputation.”
Li Xianyu’s screams suddenly echoed out from the other end of the phone.
