Shocking Venomous Consort: Frivolous Miss - Chapter 181
Chapter 181: Noble?
This letter caused waves in Ling Chuxi’s heart, but after that, there was no more news from Ling Wushang. This bewildered Ling Chuxi. Since she could not understand the matter, she set it aside. Didn’t Ling Wushang already say that he would tell her everything when they meet?
Once she put the letter away, Ling Chuxi was not longer at a loss. She smiled at Ling Yichen. “Yichen, let’s go back home to celebrate New Year’s.”
“Sure,” agreed Ling Yichen with a nod. “Can I invite my senior brother?”
“Just ask him along. The more the merrier,” agreed Ling Chuxi with a smile. Ling Yichen had never mentioned his parents before. Though the Ling clan treated Ling Yichen very well, Ling Chuxi never recalled any of them mentioning his parents. She herself had never met his parents, nor did she speak up to ask about them. If Ling Yichen wished to speak about it, he would tell her himself.
Before the holidays, the name list of the students who would be participating in the academy’s exchange program was finalized. Ling Yichen and Ling Chuxi were to attend the Wind Cloud Academy in the capital whilst Lan Xinyu would be sent to different academy in another city.
“Why were we not all placed in the same academy? Why?” growled Lan Xinyu at the teacher in charge of announcing the name list, almost crushing him.
The teacher coughed. “This is not my fault. Go and ask your grandfather,” wheezed out the teacher forcefully, he was left dizzy by Lan Xinyu’s shaking.
“You grandfather saw that you were lacking, so he wanted you to try surviving alone,” explained Ling Chuxi before bringing Ling Yichen and Xia Zhuoyi away with her, leaving Lan Xinyu stunned and rooted to the spot. She finally understood the reason why after processing Ling Chuxi’s words. She acknowledged it with an, “Oh”, then she chased after them.
…
After the New Year celebrations, it was time to go to the Wind Cloud Academy in the capital.
In Shi Qu Town, Ling Chuxi was sitting by a window, looking out at the scenic and snowy view. She felt an extraordinary peace at the moment. Aunt Wang was busy hanging lanterns and decorating the place with Chinese couplets and other festive decorations. Ling Yichen was in the courtyard sweeping the snow away while Fu Chengyu was helping Aunt Wang hang lanterns from the higher places she couldn’t reach.
“Little White, it’s really great having everyone around.” Ling Chuxi retracted her gaze and lowered her head to look at Little White who was held in her embrace. With a smile on her face, she picked up Lthe small fox and gave it a kiss. Little White gently shook its ears.
After celebrating New Year’s, Ling Chuxi, Ling Yichen as well as Fu Chengyu set off for the capital. Originally, the academy had dispatched a carriage to send them over, but as they wished to go on their own, they rejected the academy’s carriage and found one of their own. During their journey, Ling Chuxi wanted to have a good look around at other places. Since coming to this world, she had only been to White Stone City. Naturally, she still felt that everything in this world was fresh and quite exciting. Xia Zhuoyi was not able to go to other academies for the exchange program, so he remained at White Stone Academy. Before Ling Chuxi left, he swore an oath to increase his own level of cultivation as soon as possible so that he would have the qualifications to follow alongside Ling Chuxi. Seeing Xia Zhuoyi’s attitude, Ling Chuxi smiled without saying anything and simply gave him two Tian Luo Pills before she left. She believed that the next time she saw Xia Zhuoyi, he would definitely be different.
The carriage moved slowly and by nightfall, they entered a small town. They were prepared to spend the night in the town and continue on their way the next morning. However, the moment they entered the small town, they realized that the atmosphere of the town was very different.
“Hey, shopkeeper. Why is the town so lively today?” queried Ling Chuxi offhandedly as she bought a few snack packets from a roadside stall.
“Little lady, all of you must be outsiders. Today, you guys are really just too lucky. You’ll get to meet a noble,” replied the shopkeeper with a shake of his head and an unpredictable look in his eyes.
“Yes, you are right. We are outsiders,” said Ling Chuxi as she took a bite of the snack. After eating it all, she nodded her head in praise. “Shopkeeper, your snacks are not bad. Give me another packet.” Noble? What noble?
Chapter 182: Messenger of the Deity Temple
“Your words must be true! My family’s stall is an established one. We have a history of more than ten years,” bragged the vendor cheerfully whilst deftly packing another bag of snacks for Ling Chuxi. Then his eyes lit up as he continued, “The town is so lively today because a messenger belonging to the Deity Temple is passing through. The Lord Messenger is staying at that inn over there. Everyone is so excited and eager to see how this Lord Messenger looks like. There were even quite a few people who had sent gifts over. I will also be sending the best snacks from my stall over in a while.”
Deity Temple?!
A messenger of the Deity Temple? Ling Chuxi was stunned at this news and she frowned after hearing it. This Deity Temple had a high standing in this world. It was the belief of the people. Praised as virtuous, Deity Temple followers would send aid during difficult times. For example, during draught, floods or natural disasters, the people from the Deity Temple would appear to help the citizens. Therefore, they were held in high prestige. How the Deity Temple was perceived was different from how the temples of Ling Chuxi’s previous world were perceived. The people of Deity Temple did not only eat vegetarian food and chant their Buddhist scriptures, but their reputation and authority were both very strong here. They could even go against the Imperial Court! The Deity Temple was the embodiment of justice, righteousness, strength, compassion and messiah.
Seeing as how everyone in this small town was so elated and how worshipful the gazes directed at the inn were, one could easily tell the position Deity Temple held in the hearts of the citizens.
As they ate their snacks, Ling Chuxi’s group of three went into the only inn in the town in search of lodgings for the night. At the door of the inn, there was an attendant who was accepting the things people were sending over to the Lord Messenger of Deity Temple. The attendant waved at them in annoyance and said, “All of you should go back now. Don’t disturb the Lord Messenger’s rest. I will help all of you to pass on the things you have brought to him.” Nobody had any differing opinions and all of them respectfully passed on their gifts to the attendant before turning around and leaving.
Ling Chuxi and the rest walked through the front door of the inn. The innkeeper spoke in an indifferent tone without raising his head, “If you are here bearing gifts for the Lord Messenger, please pass them on to the attendant.”
“We are here to stay though,” said Ling Chuxi in response.
“Oh, is that so?” said the innkeeper as he raised his head to take a clear look at Ling Chuxi and the rest. Observing that they were all dressed out of the ordinary, he hesitated for a moment before speaking in a slightly more polite tone. “I’m afraid this won’t be too convenient, my three guests. We have the Lord Messenger staying here tonight. Why don’t the three of you look for a family to stay with for the night instead?”
“Why? Did the Lord Messenger book your entire inn?” asked Ling Chuxi coldly as she raised her brows.
“The Lord Messenger appreciates peace and quiet. It would be better if you all could look for another place to stay instead of remaining standing here like this,” insisted the innkeeper after he clocked Ling Chuxi’s attitude. If this scene took place in the past, he would definitely not dare to act like this towards people who were dressed out of the ordinary as this group were. However, today was different. The person who was staying in his inn was the Lord Messenger from the Deity Temple. So given the circumstances, his words were no longer courteous.
“You—” began Ling Chuxi, but before she managed to complete her sentence, she was interrupted.
“It’s not a problem, Innkeeper. This is the only inn in town, right? Let this miss and her companions stay,” said a deep male voice. “How could other people be deprived of a place to stay because of me?”
Ling Chuxi turned around to look at the person who spoke. The voice belonged to a young man dressed in green. An odd cloud imprint was embroidered on his sleeve. Ling Chuxi found out later on that the cloud imprint was worn exclusive only by those from the Deity Temple. The man himself looked ordinary. He had a pair of small eyes that were currently beaming at Ling Chuxi. Standing behind him were two males dressed in dark combat clothes with broad hats on their heads, disallowing others to see their faces clearly.
Yet, despite how covered up they were, Ling Chuxi could judge that the two men in dark combat clothes possessed cultivation skills that were not weak. This so-called Lord Messenger also seemed to be very strong in his own right. Because, when he came downstairs, Ling Chuxi was actually unable to notice him until he spoke. His breathing was so restrained that it seemed as though his level of cultivation was above her own.
Ling Yichen frowned slightly. The way the man before them stared at Ling Chuxi made him uncomfortable. Was this man the rumored messenger from Deity Temple?
