His parents were still waiting for him to return. If he were to give up, how could his old parents continue to live on? An Xiaoyan hesitated for a while and finally nodded.
“Good, when the doctor says that you can leave the hospital, I’ll take you and we’ll drive back.”
Liu Cheng had already made up an excuse for his family, saying that he would get away for a while on National Day. Liu Lianxun did not doubt Liu Cheng as he trusted his son.
“I bought a lot of gifts for uncle and aunty. What do you think?” Liu Cheng placed a pile of tonics around the hospital bed, including birds nest, ginseng and so on. An Xiaoyan could not accept Liu Cheng’s extravagance, and hurriedly stopped him by saying no.
Only the thought of going home could put a smile on Yan Zi’s face. Liu Cheng said, “My visit would certainly cause them inconvenience. So if I don’t treat them well, I’m afraid I might get driven out.”
“They won’t.”
Liu Cheng asked his assistant to move all the gifts into the car. Instead of choosing, he thought it would be a better idea to give everything to them.
At first, it was decided that he would go back on National Day. However, after giving it much thought, An Xiaoyan would not want his parents to see him in such a state as he did not want to worry them. Thus, they decided to wait until he got better before heading home.
Two or three days later, An Xiaoyan was able to get off the bed. The nurse was vigilant and kept following behind him quietly.
At the rooftop garden of the hospital’s inpatient area, An Xiaoyan told the nurse to get busy. He found a place to sit down and looked at the outside world through the glass window.
Sitting on his right, an elderly couple carried a kitten in their arms and smiled. They noticed An Xiaoyan looking over and nodded at him. The old woman put the cat in his arms, “It’s very gentle. We were bored in the hospital and brought Lychee over.”
The softness and warmth made An Xiaoyan stroked the cat’s fur with his hands. Lychee gave out a lazy cry and the old woman smiled wider, “Lychee is only three years old, but I don’t know how it became so fat. It’s a little hard to hold it.”
“It’s good. It’s a ginger cat.”
“I don’t know. My son bought it for fear of our loneliness.”
An Xiaoyan stroked the cat’s fur with his hand, and a casual smile appeared on his face.
“Young man, do you like it too? There are three kittens in my family. All are four months old and of the same breed. I can ask my son to bring one for you in the afternoon.”
“No need, I don’t have time for it.”
The old woman interrupted him, “You, young people are using ‘no time’ and ‘busy at work’ as excuses. You absolutely have time if you really like it.”
Liu Cheng came up to see An Xiaoyan. When he saw An Xiaoyan chatting with a group of patients and holding a cat, he could not help but smile. The two of them did not mention anything about the previous incidents. He kept thinking that one day Yan Zi would take things too hard and make his leave. Now that he had seen Yan Zi enjoying the company of others, it meant that Yan Zi did not have any suicidal thoughts.
“What are you talking about? You look so happy?”
“Hi, director,” The nurses next to the patients chorused.
“Yan Zi, are you feeling better today?”
“Much better, you don’t have to worry about me, and this old lady here says that she wants to give me a cat.”
Liu Cheng patted his head and suddenly realized, “Why didn’t I think of this? You used to feed stray cats at school. I should have bought you a cat to kill time.”
The sun shone directly on An Xiaoyan and he leaned slightly to the side. When looking down, he saw a car and the person sitting in the car looked familiar.
He took a few steps forward. When he saw the figure, his hand trembled and dropped the cat. The cat let out a loud meow. He was so frightened that he slumped on the ground. He wanted to run out the moment he got up.
People around him were shocked.
Is there anything so scary outside that could make him behave so?
The old woman daringly walked forward and took a look downstairs. There was nothing unusual except for some patients who were hurrying by.
What did he see?
“All of you should stay here for now. It’s nothing serious. I’ll go and see what happened to him.”
After Liu Cheng gave his orders, he chased after An Xiaoyan.
Finally, when they reached the ward, Liu Cheng stopped at the door to catch his breath. He peered through the glass panel of the door and saw An Xiaoyan sitting on his bed and hugging his quilt tightly. He was trembling all over.
“What’s the matter, Yan Zi? What did you see?”
“Gu Jun is coming after me, I saw him…”
Liu Cheng had no idea what happened between Yan Zi and Gu Jun at the Night Charm Luxurious Clubhouse that made Yan Zi so afraid.
“Don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you.”
Liu Cheng patted Yan Zi’s back. Yan Zi gradually calmed down a little, but his hands were still trembling.
“That old lady said she wanted to give you a cat this afternoon. I’ll go and buy a cat cage and some cat food. You won’t dwell over the past once you have a pet cat. Cats are so clingy. When you sleep, they will snuggle under your quilt. And when you reach out your hand, they will lick you…”
As An Xiaoyan listened, his body started to relax and finally fell asleep in Liu Cheng’s arms. Liu Cheng covered Yan Zi with a quilt before leaving.
Back to the director’s office, Liu Cheng felt an overwhelming sense of anger in him and swept all the documents on his table down.
Gu Jun, Yan Zi is such a good person, why did you ruin him?
An Xiaoyan was awakened by a lick. He opened his eyes and saw a pair of big eyes staring at him. When he recovered from his shock, he gently lifted the kitten and put it in his arms.
Liu Cheng came in with a big cat cage, cat litter, cat food and many other things, “This cat is from the son of the old lady you met this afternoon. It’s also a ginger cat, not afraid of strangers.”
An Xiaoyan stroked the kitten’s fur, and the kitten licked his palm cleverly. The itchy feeling caused a tingling sensation on An Xiaoyan’s back.
“I didn’t wake you up for lunch because you were sleeping so soundly in the afternoon. Coincidentally, the stall selling wonton noodles happened to be downstairs, so I bought you a portion. It is pickle flavored, your favorite.”
Liu Cheng adjusted the bed, arranged the table, and put the wonton noodles on the table.
An Xiaoyan tasted the noodles and savored the familiar taste. The sour taste of pickles blended into the noodles. As he was eating, the kitten meowed alongside.
“It’s hungry,” An Xiaoyan reminded.
Liu Cheng hurried to retrieve the cat food, opened it and poured it into the cat feeding bowl. Just as he was about to pick up the kitten and put it in front of the cat pot, the kitten showed him its pitiful eyes. It sat next to the cat feeding bowl and remained motionless, staring at the wonton noodles on the table.
An Xiaoyan said, “Put it up, it’s still young and it’s not easy for it to digest those adult cat food.” After that, he took a wonton out of the lunch box and put it on the ground.
When the kitten saw the wonton, it ate happily and scratched its head at the same time.
Liu Cheng helplessly said, “Only you will spoil it. Give it a name.”
“Since it loves wontons so much, let’s call it Wonton.”
