Chapter 3: What the…?! Is That a Panda?

“This is the Hall of Purity. Over the years, it has become old and shabby.” Ning Fei pointed to the hall in front of him as he spoke.
The hall was indeed shabby-looking as the red paint on the wooden doors and window frames had faded, revealing the yellowish rotten wood underneath.
But the viewers were observant enough to discover that the Hall of Purity was nonetheless clean. There wasn’t a speck of dust to be seen in sight. Even the incense burners on the table were placed neatly. The incense ashes in the burners had also been removed.
After that, Ning Fei introduced the dormitory, garden, bamboo forest, well, and fruit trees to the viewers. Even though Light Breeze Temple was a temple, other than the Hall of Purity, it resembled an ordinary peasant family house or farm.
The traditional Taoists could be categorized into two clans — the Quanzhen clan and the Zhengyi clan. However, Light Breeze Temple belonged to neither and was simply labeled as a hidden clan.
A hidden clan didn’t have that many rules or traditions and, in a sense, was less conventional. They emphasized more on continuing their legacy and on life. The clan’s belief was in one’s heart.
“This is my temple. If I include the area of the dormitory, it’s only about two thousand square meters,” concluded Ning Fei.
After he finished talking, a wave of ardent discussion broke out amongst the viewers.
‘Only? Does the webcaster not understand how large 2,000 square meters is?’
‘2,000 square meters is incredible!’
‘How I envy him. My rented apartment is merely a pathetic 40-square-meter space, and I have to share a toilet.’
‘What the…?! Did my eyes fail me? His courtyard is huge.’
‘May I ask what kind of bamboo have you planted? Why are the bamboos so tall?’
The viewers exploded with questions, causing a commotion.
Ning Fei glanced at the time, and it was nearly 9.00 p.m.
It had already turned dark.
There weren’t any lights in the temple, but it wasn’t because they wanted to save electricity. It was merely common knowledge to anyone who lived in the mountains that there were too many bugs.
Other than the bugs and mosquitoes, there was an endless number of moths flying around.
The situation wasn’t that bad without light. If there was a source of light, the ground would be covered with dead moths the next morning.
“It’s getting late, so I’ll end the livestream now. From tomorrow onward, I’ll be starting the livestream from nine in the morning until nine at night. Thank you for watching.”
Ning Fei waved at the screen on his phone.
‘No! Little brother, let me watch you for a while longer!’
‘This host is quite interesting. He ended the session after a mere two hours.’
‘I’m totally his fan! Let me subscribe to him and see what he is going to show tomorrow.’
‘Is this a real Taoist temple? Let me research it on Baidu.’ 1
Many of the viewers bade him goodbye reluctantly.
Ning Fei ended the livestream and then checked on the webcast’s statistics.
There were a total of 2,623 viewers, and 184 had subscribed to his channel. Thirteen had rewarded him.
These results were great and encouraging for an amateur like him, who had only livestreamed for two hours.
Certainly, his good looks and his identity as a priest had indeed attracted many.
Ning Fei also checked on the popularity level with the System. He had accumulated 942 points.
“System, how do you calculate the popularity?” Ning Fei asked out of curiosity.
“Answering the host’s question now. The popularity level is calculated based on how much the viewers had liked the host. To put it simply, one point is the lowest a viewer can give. Ten points mean that the host is well-liked by the viewer. If someone gives you fifty, he or she is your die-hard fan,” the System answered.
“Oh, I see.” Ning Fei nodded in response.
The lowest a fan could give was one popularity point, and they could also give more than fifty points.
To think that he had garnered more than nine hundred popularity points.
At this time, the system’s voice echoed again.
“Ding! Congratulations to Host for completing his first webcast! Your reward is an insect-repelling incense. This incense will protect the temple from being attacked by bugs and pests.”
“What the…? An insect-repelling incense?”
Ning Fei’s eyes literally lit up at the announcement.
What was the thing that everyone was afraid of in the mountains? It was definitely insects! The insects in summer put everyone in agony and suffering.
There was a particular type of black and white mosquito in the city that had left many there suffering. Yet, this mosquito was nothing compared to the mosquitoes in the mountains. The mosquitoes in the mountains were poisonous.
There was another type of mosquito that was very tiny, so not even a mosquito net could deter it from entering. It fed viciously on human blood, but for the people who had resided for a long time in the mountains, they were somewhat immune to it. For tourists or people who were new to the mountains, they would be bitten until they cried.
So this insect-repelling incense was practically a treasure!
The insect-repelling incense resembled a luminous pearl. Ning Fei placed it behind the statue in the Hall of Purity.
Instantly, the whole temple turned silent. Even the sound of crickets gradually disappeared.
It seemed as though an invisible shield had cloaked Light Breeze Temple and stopped the insects from entering.
“Finally I can get a good night of sleep.” Ning Fei stretched his arms before he began to clean up the hall. After he was done, he went to his room.
Early next morning, Ning Fei woke up and made breakfast. As usual, he studied and read.
At 9.00 a.m., he began his webcast.
In the mornings, people were usually busier, and hardly anyone would watch livestreams. The number of viewers was usually slightly more than a hundred even after a few hours.
However, Ning Fei was nonchalant about that. He continued his daily routine of tidying the garden and left the webcast on the drone view.
The garden was located in the courtyard and divided into several areas. He had planted cucumbers, tomatoes, coriander, and leeks.
Ning Fei was busy plucking the weeds and spreading fertilizer.
It was a beautiful scene, and the main factor why was the mountain scenery. At a glance, it was green and lush everywhere.
A priest worked beneath the fluffy clouds and blue skies, and this sight wasn’t something that one could see in the city.
…
Wang Qi worked in an office, and he was feeling bored at work. So he took out his phone and placed it discreetly on his desk. He began to watch a webcast show.
He continued to act as though he had been working hard.
It was common to see this sort of “behavior” in the workplace. Even when one had nothing to do, he or she would still have to act as though he or she was busy.
Watching livestreams was a good way to pass the time. One could turn off the show and leave at any time if he or she was bored.
Today, Wang Qi clicked on an outdoorsy webcast.
“Light Breeze Temple Webcast Room? Are there any real priests left in the world?” He was curious, so he clicked on the video.
He saw a priest working hard in the vegetable garden with a background of cloudy blue skies. That scene perfectly embodied the essence of nature.
Most outdoor webcasters filmed themselves either fishing or embarking on an adventure. Some might even resort to wild and excessive activities to attract viewers. Yet this webcaster chose to pluck weeds?
Wang Qi glanced at the number of viewers. There were more than a thousand.
Were they crazy or bored?
After a while, Wang Qi began to understand the beauty of the show.
Most outdoor webcasters merely put on a show for the sake of attracting viewers. But in reality, what viewers really yearned for was to watch someone else’s actual life.
Ning Fei’s webcast show was indeed authentic.
The drone would occasionally feature a close up of Ning Fei’s face.
This young priest was indeed good-looking.
Wang Qi felt relaxed and content as he watched the webcast.
At this time, he caught something moving in the bamboo forest next to the vegetable garden. It looked as though there was a person.
When the drone flew further away to capture the entire view, Wang Qi was shocked. He rubbed his eyes to make sure that he wasn’t seeing things.
His voice echoed in the entire office.
“What the…?! Is that a panda?”
