Nine Star Burden - Chapter 86
Chapter 86: The Guardians Of The Night
The group of five finally assembled. Initially, Hai Tianqing was still lagging behind and did not take part in the battle. However, he was also made to bend forward with his hands behind his back.
The iron palm on the back of Jiang Xiao’s head was so strong that he couldn’t even move his neck to look around. He had no choice but to look at the snow on the ground and observe things through his peripheral vision.
“Ka-cha!”
After a series of crisp sounds, Jiang Xiao felt his hands being cuffed behind him and he felt extremely cold.
At the moment that he got handcuffed, Jiang Xiao suddenly discovered that his Star Power was cut off by an unknown force, and he could no longer be shrouded in Star Power. Hence, he instantly felt extremely cold.
What kind of a horrid technique is this?
It actually cuts off Star Power?
The team of five were handed over to another group of people three minutes later. Balaclavas were then put over their heads.
There were no sounds apart from the whistling of the cold wind and the sounds of their boots squeaking against the ground. The sounds of the chattering of their teeth could be heard as well.
The group was held down and shoved all the way to the cave for about 20 minutes. The surrounding temperatures continued to rise uncontrollably and there was no longer any cold wind blowing in their faces. The environment was much better, but their hearts sank continuously.
What’s going on?
Have we broken into a military ground and gotten arrested as prisoners?
What about the white signal flare that almost caused the snowfield to blow up?
This bunch of people…
Jiang Xiao stepped on the stone road and stumbled forward. More than ten minutes later, Jiang Xiao finally broke free and regained his balance.
Not long later, the sounds of footsteps could be heard coming from afar gradually.
Jiang Xiao suppressed his thoughts and waited for a while before fumbling around and finding a wall. He then continued to press his head against the wall and slide downwards slowly to remove the balaclava.
The fire in front of him was the only light source.
The problem was that the bonfire was outside the iron fence.
Have I been put behind bars?
Jiang Xiao strode forward with his hands pressed behind his back. He tried his best to look around, only to see that there were plenty of such cells in the irregularly shaped cave.
Jiang Xiao noticed that Han Jiangxue was standing alone on the left, as well as the confused Li Weiyi who was in the cell next to her.
Due to the fact that the angle was smaller, Jiang Xiao could not see the people in cell No. 2 and cell No. 3 beside him.
Meanwhile, Hai Tianqing was locked in cell No. 2 that was next to Jiang Xiao’s, and Xia Yan was locked in cell No. 3.
“Jiangxue?” Xia Yan asked softly. Due to the fact that she was in the middle, she could not see anyone at all.
“Yes.” Han Jiangxue was in cell No. 4 and could only see Jiang Xiao, but she felt rather reassured. “We’re all here, right?”
Everyone expressed assent.
“Hai Tianqing, what’s going on? Those people in black have epaulets on their shoulders, with red letters on black background. The character is ‘Ye’, right?” Xia Yan asked softly.
Slightly stunned, Jiang Xiao asked, “Ye?”
What does it mean? He wasn’t as capable as Xia Yan and so could not see the mysterious epaulet.
“They’re the Guardians Of The Night,” Hai Tianqing said gently.
“Guardians Of The Night? The Guardians Of The Night team?” Li Weiyi asked.
They were a secret force in the nation.
It was not the first time Jiang Xiao had heard of the Guardians Of The Night because there were plenty of rumors about them on the Internet, but there were few explanations for their existence.
Most were just groundless rumors.
Compared to the Wasteland Reclaimers, the Guardians Of The Night were much more mysterious and their detailed roles could not be disclosed to the public.
People only knew that it was a mysterious department of the state. The team was active in the different dimensions of Huaxia, but no one knew exactly what they did.
However, many Awakened had personally described that the Guardians Of The Night had once saved their lives before.
The Guardians Of The Night were all dressed in the same uniform. In the desert, they would be dressed in light-colored desert uniforms. Now that they were in the snowfield, they were dressed in black cloaks, black military uniforms, and black military boots.
The environments of various Dimensional Spaces were different, so their uniforms were also different. However, the only constant was their epaulet.
The character “Ye” was embroidered in dark red on the epaulet.
The picture of the epaulet had once circulated around the internet, possibly discovered by an Awakened in a certain Dimensional Space. Later on…
The photos of the epaulet were then deleted and the fate of the photographer was unknown.
However, the power of netizens was extremely strong. So, the photos could still be found on the internet every now and then.
The epaulets were indeed rather exquisite and mysterious-looking. Hence, they managed to pique Jiang Xiao’s curiosity.
Jiang Xiao had his own conjectures about the Guardians Of The Night and he could tell from the random pieces of information on the internet that plenty of Awakened had received aid from them.
Is that the role of this team?
That doesn’t seem right. Saving others and giving aid seems to be the job of the Guardians.
Investigating on the situation of the Dimensional Space? That seems to be the job of the Wasteland Reclaimers.
“What do the Guardians Of The Night do?” Jiang Xiao asked softly.
“Uh.” Li Weiyi fell silent after trying to speak, for he had no idea how he should answer.
However, Hai Tianqing was much less awkward. He answered, “Do you really not know where you got your Silver Quality Green Glow?”
Jiang Xiao wondered to himself in shock, Where did I get it?
I upgraded it, of course. What else could it be?
What does Hai Tianqing mean? Mistaken?
“Your parents may have destroyed a Dimensional Space to obtain the Silver Quality White Ghoul Star Bead they gave to you,” Hai Tianqing continued.
Jiang Xiao asked in shock, “What do you mean?”
Bang!
A loud sound of the door being slammed shut could be heard from afar, after which two tall and burly figures strode in.
They seemed rather domineering.
They were both extremely tall, standing at about two meters.
They were clad in large black cloaks, revealing the dark military uniform beneath as they walked. They looked just like terrifying ghosts that were absolutely domineering.
To Jiang Xiao’s bewilderment, one of them seemed to be a girl.
Two-meter tall girls were extremely rare, even in basketball teams.
She was about twenty-five or twenty-six years old and she had a pair of narrow and long eyes that were slightly raised at the corners, making her look menacing and aloof. Her hair was pulled back into a low ponytail.
Jiang Xiao noticed her because she was constantly staring at him with resentment and menace in her eyes. It was as if she had just returned from the battlefield and was covered in blood.
The other man was keeping his eyes fixed on Hai Tianqing.
“Brother, you’re making things hard for me.” The man walked towards Hai Tianqing’s cell and spoke in a dense and low voice. “How am I supposed to help you during such a critical juncture?”
The members of the team were all stunned.
What’s going on?
Does Teacher Hai know this group of Guardians Of The Night?
They seem rather close?
Leaning against the door, the man asked softly, “Little Hai, tell me, did you hear anything?”
Hai Tianqing smiled wryly and answered, “I don’t know anything. I’m just here to protect my students during a mission in the snowfield.”
“We verified that your school had decided on the Northwest Route for the mission,” said the man in black.
Hai Tianqing said helplessly, “These kids have good qualifications and their strengths are top-notch compared to their peers. They did not pay attention to the tasks issued by the school but decided to take on the more challenging Southeast Route. I have been following them to protect them.”
Finally, the tall woman broke her silence. “What a coincidence,” she said in a hoarse voice.
Hai Tianqing replied, “If you verify the information, you will be able to find out their identities. All of them are upright and will never be traitors or spies.”
Traitor? Spy?
What’s going on?
Why did terms that always exist in action dramas about spies appear at such a moment?
The tall woman did not respond at all. She walked towards the door of Jiang Xiao’s cell, lowered her head, and looked at Jiang Xiao from above.
She was full of dominance and her daunting gaze that was full of murderous intent made Jiang Xiao shudder.
What’s going on?
Why is she only staring at me?
Am I less upright than the other three?
Hey, seems like it, actually. I was adopted, but the three of them belong to parents who are from the national teams…
