My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 95
Chapter 95 Who’s Trying to Set her Up?
At six o’clock in the evening, Qin Jinhuan brought Mu Yu to attend the banquet hosted by Qin Xiaozhi at Gloria Hotel. The both of them had dressed up for the occasion.
Qin Jinhuan had said that it was merely a small-scale appreciation dinner. Thus, Mu Yu was not surprised to see the limited numbers of guests.
“Wow! Sister-in-law, you look gorgeous today! Gosh, you look like an angel that came down from heaven!”
“What nonsense are you talking about?” Mu Yu felt embarrassed and gestured for him to shut up as she saw that everyone’s glance toward her due to Wen Zeyu’s exaggerated voice.
“I am just telling the truth!” Wen Zeyu shrugged his shoulders while looking on innocently. He then winked at Qin Jinhuan and asked, “Huan, is there anything wrong with what I just said?”
“There’s nothing wrong with that but there’s something wrong with you. Ying, deal with him.”
“My little Ying!” Wen Zeyu saw Rong Ying and immediately ran toward her. He ignored the couple and eagerly stayed by her side.
Rong Ying showed signs of annoyance and groaned. “Can’t you keep quiet for a minute? I walk in and the first thing I hear is your chattering voice, so annoying.”
“If I don’t make any noise, the atmosphere wouldn’t be lively.”
Rong Ying ignored him and turned toward Mu Yu and said, “Sister-in-law, didn’t you say that you were hungry? Let’s go and grab something…”
“Hey! My little Ying! Whatever Sister-in-law feels like eating is Huan’s responsibility. Why are you being a lightbulb? Gosh, why don’t you know any better?!”
“I…”
“What?! Can’t you be more sensible? Let’s go eat.” Without any hesitation, Wen Zeyu dragged Rong Ying away.
“He is such a humorous and lively person.” Mu Yu could not help but laugh.
“Just ignore him.” Qin Jinhuan smiled and got her a piece of cake.
“Wah, how did you know that I like strawberry cake?”
Qin Jinhuan was stunned for a while before he chuckled. “Telepathy.”
“That’s a bunch of bullsh*t.” Mu Yu groaned but ultimately felt sweet at heart and enjoyed the cake in her mouth.
“Let me go and greet some people. You can stay here and eat some food first.”
“Alright.”
“Sister-in-law.” Just as Qin Jinhuan left, Qin Chengxi came over.
He still looked pale and feeble, the tone of his voice was timid as per usual. Mu Yu who treated him as a little brother felt bad and immediately pointed to the huge spread of food in front of them and asked, “You want to eat?”
Qin Chengxi shook his head and lowered his voice as he said, “I am not hungry. Sister-in-law, thank you for putting in kind words for me in front of my brother.”
“Ah? I didn’t say anything at all.” Mu Yu glanced at Qin Jinhuan who was talking to people not far away before whispering, “Actually he does care about you quite a bit.”
“I know that my brother is someone who values family ties. My parents are the one that went overboard. However, they are my parents after all and I am in no position to comment on their actions. Even if I did, they would not listen to me.”
Mu Yu could see the helplessness in his glassy eyes so she quickly consoled him. “After this incident, I am sure they would have learnt their lesson. You shouldn’t feel too depressed, after all you are still so young…”
“I am not young, I am already twenty! I…”
“Xi, turns out you are here! I have been looking for you everywhere!” a young teeanger ran over and shouted at him in excitement.
Qin Chengxi saw the teeanger and immediately his gaze wandered off. “Err, why are you looking for me?”
“Your favorite iced taro sago with coconut milk is here, I…”
“My stomach doesn’t feel too well today so I can’t have anything cold.”
“Oh, then…”
“My mother is still waiting for me back there, I have to go.”
“Xi! Xi…”
Upon seeing Qin Chengxi leaving without even turning his head back, the teenager was clearly disappointed. He picked up a random wine glass and downed it unhappily.
Mu Yu recognized him as Shang Qi, somebody she met at Yi Yunzhe’s celebratory banquet last night. Shang Qi was the only son of Shang Huining, the chairman of Xin Xin Multimedia Group. Mu Yu took the opportunity to check him out as he was drinking the wine.
Shang Qi had fair skin and well-defined facial features. He was wearing a light-colored casual outfit and it made him stand out. If it was not for the fact that Mu Yu knew he was the newly appointed vice chairman of Xin Xin Multimedia Group, she would have thought that he was a college student.
Of course she was not curious about his position in the company but rather the disappointed look on his face. If Xi was a girl, she would most definitely have thought that Shang Qi was courting Xi. However, Xi was a boy.
As such, out of curiosity, she probed. “Young Master Shang, are you close with Xi?”
“We were classmates.”
“Classmates?” Mu Yu was shocked.
After all, Shang Qi looked a few years older than Qin Chengxi.
Shang Qi understood her confusion and awkwardly explained, “I was diagnosed with a serious illness when I first entered college. Thus, I took three years off from college and eventually I became classmates with Xi.”
“Ah, I am sorry for asking.”
“It’s fine, it’s no secret anyway.” Shang Qi smiled and his two cute canine teeth could be seen.
Mu Yu thought about the secret that Qin Chengxi mentioned earlier, so she paused for a moment before asking, “Then you must be rather close to Xi, right?”
“Yes, we had been seated at the same table for three years in college.”
Mu Yu got excited and said, “Such a coincidence! Then you must understand quite a lot of things about Xi?”
“I am not sure what you are referring to…”
Such an intelligent person. Mu Yu secretly praised him.
She glanced at Qin Chengxi, who was not too far away, before whispering, “Do you know about the girl that Xi has a crush on?”
Qi Chengxi was constantly depressed and it might have been related to this issue. Although Qin Jinhuan had reminded her to not be nosy about this, she sincerely wanted to lend a hand to Qin Chengxi who was kind, timid and shy.
“He has a crush on a girl?” Shang Qi’s hand that held onto the wine glass trembled.
“You don’t know about this?” Mu Yu, who was disappointed with his reply, did not pay attention and missed out on that detail.
“He told you that he has a girl he likes?”
“Oh no, I guessed so myself.”
“Why did you have such a thought? Was it something he said?”
“Nope, I guessed completely based on my intuition.”
“Why would you feel that way?”
Mu Yu kept quiet and gave him a weird stare. She was wondering why he was actively questioning about this topic of conversation.
“I am sorry, I am being too nosy.” Shang Qi realized he had forgotten his manners and quickly raised his wine glass up as an apology.
“It’s fine.” Mu Yu also raised her glass of fruit juice in response.
“Hey, Sister-in-law, how could you drink fruit juice on such a joyful occasion? Come, switch it out for a glass of red wine.” Wen Zeyu suddenly appeared behind her and snatched over her glass of fruit juice. Then, he pushed a glass of wine into her hand.
“I shall not bother the two of you.” Shang Qi smiled and then left.
Mu Yu suspiciously stared at the slight blushing of his face from the corner of her eyes. Then squinted her eyes and was deep in thought.
“Sister-in-law, you are so charismatic.”
“Why do you say that?”
Wen Zeyu pointed at Shang Qi’s silhouette and whispered, “Xin Xin Multimedia Group has been thriving in the industry for the past few years. Shang Qi as the sole descendant of Shang Huining is a very popular person in An City. A lot of businesses wish to improve their relationships with him. However, he is a very arrogant person and rarely speaks to people. He does not usually chat with ordinary people yet he actually chose to strike a conversation with you. Doesn’t that prove that you are extremely charismatic?”
Mu Yu smiled and said, “What do you mean I am extremely charismatic? Who am I to receive such an honor? Based on Yi Yunzhe’s incident, I’m sure you could tell that Chairman Shang has an exceptionally close relationship with Grandfather. Young Master Shang must have treated me politely out of respect for Grandfather and Huan. Oh right, there’s also the connection between him and Xi. They were deskmates for three years in college. It is fate, right?”
“You are right, their fates are closely linked together. Not only were they from the same school, the same class, seated at the same table, they even dropped out together.”
“Dropped out? You’re saying Xi dropped out of school?”
“Yes, due to his weak health conditions, he dropped out last year. Not long after, Young Master Shang also dropped out and returned home to help manage his father’s company.
“That’s quite a coincidence!”
“Which is why I said that their fates were linked together. Unfortunately, Xi is a guy… Eh! Sister-in-law, something is up!”
Mu Yu glanced at where Wen Zeyu was staring at and she saw Dong Wanqing, who was scantily dressed, walking toward Qin Jinhuan in a seductive manner. At that, she was extremely unhappy.
“She must be up to no good! Sister-in-law, stay right here. I will go and drag Huan back!”
“Hey!”
Mu Yu wanted to stop Wen Zeyu but he had already taken off in large strides. Thus, she decided to keep quiet and placed her glass of wine down. She acted like she was picking out food when in reality she was secretly glancing and paying attention to what was going on over there. When she saw that Qin Jinhuan left Dong Wanqing and walked toward her in quick strides, she could no longer contain her happiness.
“Yu, are you okay?”
“Huh?”
“Zeyu said that you are not feeling well…” He saw that she was dumbfounded and immediately realized what was going on. He could not help but laugh. He stared at her lovingly and patted her on the head. In a pampering voice, he said, “You fool.”
She was extremely pleased and just as she was about to reply, out of the corner of her eye she saw that Dong Wanqing had followed him. She immediately became upset and pouted her lips. She mumbled, “Your secret admirer is coming for you again.”
“You’re getting jealous over someone like her?”
“I…”
“Ladies and gentlemen, I welcome you all who participated in today’s banquet. I would like to represent…” Wen Zeyu’s loud and clear voice suddenly came from the center of the ballroom and cut her off. At that moment, she had no time to think about Dong Wanqing as she focused her attention on listening to Wen Zeyu’s speech as the host. When he announced that Qin Jinhuan had been appointed to be the Chairman of Qing Tian Group, she was overjoyed. She immediately raised her glass of wine to give Qin Jinhuan a toast.
This news was nothing special to Qin Jinhuan but he still joined in and bumped glasses with her.
“Huan, I wish to congratulate you as well. Let me propose a toast,” Dong Wanqing said while smiling. She then raised her glass of red wine in front of Qin Jinhuan’s face.
Qin Jinhuan acted like he could not see it and turned his face to the side.
Mu Yu was delighted when she saw the awkward look on Dong Wanqing’s face. She placed the empty glass of wine down and casually picked up a piece of cake. She then moved the slice of cake in front of him and fed the cake to him as he opened his mouth.
“Huan, Wanqing sincerely wishes to congratulate you. It’s disrespectful to not accept her toast.” Qin Xiaozhi walked over and took over the glass of wine from Dong Wanqing’s hand.
Mu Yu subconsciously took a step back as she had always feared Qin Jinhuan’s grandfather. She panicked and immediately stopped displaying her affection toward him.
“I don’t need her well wishes.”
“Huan!”
“If you care so much about it, you are welcome to drink it.”
“You…”
“Huan, Sister-in-law, I also wish to congratulate you.” Rong Ying could tell that the situation was getting awkward and quickly walked forward with a glass of wine in order to clear the air.
“Huan.” Mu Yu pulled at the sleeves of Qin Jinhuan, gesturing for him to show some respect to both Rong Ying and his grandfather.
Despite not liking Dong Wanqing, Mu Yu did not want him to suffer another falling-out with his grandfather over such a trivial issue.
Qin Jinhuan saw his grandfather raising another glass of wine and knew that he wanted to give a toast for him and Mu Yu. Only then did his expression lighten up. He and Mu Yu picked up their glass of wine together and accepted Dong Wanqing’s ‘well wishes’.
Dong Wanqing was delighted and she continuously thanked them before leaving with much satisfaction.
Qin Xiaozhi was clearly satisfied with Mu Yu’s principles in dealing with such situations. For once, he smiled at her before turning to Qin Jinhuan and said, “Huan, this time around, Chairman Shang and Chairman Yao have been of great help to us. Let’s go together and give them a toast of appreciation.”
Qin Jinhuan nodded his head and requested Rong Ying to accompany Mu Yu before walking away with his grandfather.
Mu Yu and Rong Ying chatted for a while before Wen Zeyu came interrupting them. He insisted and dragged Rong Ying over to accompany him for a dance. Mu Yu saw that Rong Ying disliked the idea but she wanted to help fulfill Wen Zeyu’s wish so she pushed Rong Ying toward the dance floor. She then looked for a corner and sat down to read up news on her phone .
After some time, she felt a little dizzy and her lips started to turn dry. She also tasted a hint of bitterness in her mouth while feeling heaty. She thought that the ballroom was poorly ventilated so she planned to walk out and look for a place to get some fresh air.
She walked to the end of a corridor and took a few deep breaths at the balcony. Surprisingly, she found out that not only did her condition not improve, she felt even dizzier. She was covered in cold sweat and her legs started to buckle. She could no longer control her thoughts.
Isn’t this the same feeling when I met Yi Yunzhe at the West Bay?
Oh God!
Am I being set up again?
Who is trying to set me up?
Grandfather? Dong Wanqing?
Unfortunately she could not think clearly anymore. She panicked and tried to take out her phone with her trembling hands. However, she could not seem to locate her phone. She naturally turned around and wanted to walk back toward the ballroom in order to seek help.
However, she barely took a few steps before realizing that her surroundings were swaying and she was completely disorientated. She was terrified and could only fumbled about as she took a few more steps. She was so dizzy that she staggered and stumbled forward.
“What happened?” A large set of hands caught her just in time.
Huan!
Her frantic mind was finally at ease. Right after that, she collapsed in the person’s arms.
