My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 74
Chapter 74 The Perpetrator
Mu Yu was surprised and hurriedly looked at the door. She released a sigh of relief when she saw that it was Jiang Wenwen who came but she still stood up to greet her.
“Wenwen, why did you come over?”
“I came to visit you! How are you? Are you okay?” Jiang Wenwen directed her questions toward Mu Yu, however, she was staring at Qin Jinhuan.
Mu Yu immediately noticed something wrong, “Did my parents call you?”
“Yeah. They were worried about you and asked me to come over and take a look.”
“How did you know that I was here?”
“Zeyu told me.”
The mention of Zeyu’s name made Rong Ying unconsciously give Jiang Wenwen side glances.
However, Jiang Wenwen did not notice. She pointed at Qin Jinhuan and asked, “How is Young Master Qin doing?”
“He’s fine. Just needs to rest for a few days.”
“Then, his grandfather…” Realizing that there were still others in the room, Jiang Wenwen immediately shut up and gave Rong Ying and the nurse a look.
Rong Ying caught on. She informed Mu Yu, “I will go check up on the other patients now. Call me if you need anything else!”, and began heading toward the door with the nurse. Then, she turned back and gave Jiang Wenwen another glance at the entrance of the ward.
“What happened to Old Master Qin? How could he treat Young Master Qin like that in front of everybody? Wouldn’t that embarrass Young Master Qin? Did Young Master Qin become sick because he was too angry? Now that he’s been wronged so badly, didn’t that make up for his mistakes? Will the Old Master let him return to the Qin family now?” After Rong Ying left, Mu Yu was bombarded by Jiang Wenwen with a series of questions.
Knowing that Jiang Wenwen already saw the news reports and pictures Yi Yunzhe posted online, Mu Yu didn’t bother giving much explanation. She sighed lightly, “It has already escalated to this. What’s the point of him returning to the Qin family?”
“What do you mean by that? He will be a young master again once he goes back to the Qin family! Given the Qin family’s influence in An City, no one would dare make jokes regarding this matter! He wouldn’t have to worry about his daily life, let alone steal from his own house.”
Mu Yu laughed wryly, “My mum called you over because she wanted to know about Huan’s condition now, right?”
“She’s worried about you.”
“Well, she’s going to be disappointed,” Mu Yu sighed. “If my mum knows about Huan’s condition right now, she will force us to get a divorce again.”
“Yu, how could you speak of her like that? She is not a snob!” Jiang Wenwen refuted and carefully took a slip of paper from her bag and gave it to her, “Look, she told me to pass this to you. She asks you to give it to Young Master Qin.”
Mu Yu squinted and looked closer. She was surprised to see that it was a 20 million cheque.
“You know that you’ve misunderstood her right? If she really was a snob, why would she give such a large sum of money to help Young Master Qin now that his financial situation is dire?”
“You don’t understand,” Mu Yu was getting upset. “This cheque was issued by Huan to my family as a betrothal gift. So if she returns the betrothal gift, what do you think she means by it?”
“What?!” Jiang Wenwen was rendered speechless. She shook her head after a few seconds, “I just don’t think she’s the kind of person you think she is. Hey, do you have any towels? I want to dry myself up.”
Only then did Mu Yu notice that Jiang Wenwen’s hair was dripping with water and immediately passed her a tissue box. Suddenly, a thought flashed through her mind. She immediately held onto Jiang Wenwen’s arm and asked anxiously, “Did you come by electric bike?”
“Yeah. The rain was pouring, I couldn’t get any cabs. Hey, why are you so nervous? I’m sure you know how good I am on an electric bike.”
“Wenwen, please don’t go out alone when it’s raining at night from now on!”
“Why?”
“I will explain to you later!” Mu Yu took out her phone and wanted to remind her parents about it too, but she was worried that her parents would nag her to divorce Qin Jinhuan if she called them. While she was hesitating, her phone shut down. Hence, she slid her phone back into her pocket and explained the ‘Wan Xiaoying incident’ that she found out from Rong Ying and the nurse to her best friend.
“Oh my God! That’s so terrifying!”Jiang Wenwen was so shocked from what she heard that she dropped her tissues. “I finally understand why you were so anxious! I don’t think I’ll ever ride the electric bike to work anymore!”
Right then, the nurse that measured Qin Jinhuan’s temperature came in. When she overheard them, she chuckled and interrupted, “Don’t be too worried. That perverted man only causes trouble when it’s raining. You’ll be fine as long as you don’t go out alone at night.”
Although Jiang Wenwen was terrified, she couldn’t help but be outraged by the injustice. “Did that monster go through something on a rainy day that he has to attack people during these specific nights?”
“Well, of course. This is what psychologists call—”
Mu Yu’s facial expression changed when a thought suddenly flashed through her mind. She hurriedly interrupted the nurse, “You have always followed the ‘Wan Xiaoying incident’ closely, right? Have you ever taken note of the timestamp and location of each of the attacks?”
“Not only had I noticed it, I also wrote them down in my notes!”
“Do you mind showing me?”
The nurse was surprised. “You’re interested too?”
“She’s a cop.”
“You’re a cop?!” The nurse scanned Mu Yu from top to bottom, disbelief obvious in her eyes.
Mu Yu felt awkward, “Wenwen…”
Jiang Wenwen disregarded her and asked, “Have you heard of Rong Jian, the chief of the police squad?”
“Of course I have! He’s the brother of our director!”
“Oh?” Jiang Wenwen did not know which director the nurse was referring to. However, after hearing what she said, she immediately pointed at Mu Yu and smiled ambiguously. “Well, she works directly under Chief Rong!”
“In the police squad?! Wow! That’s so cool!” The nurse saluted respectfully. “Please hang on, I’ll go take it!” she added, and ran out of the ward.
Mu Yu chuckled, “I’m just a forensic scientist, why are you deceiving her?”
“I mean, of course I will help you out since you’re interested in the case. Hey, what did you find out though?”
“Nah, I just had a thought. But it’s just an educated guess.”
Mu Yu’s hesitant expression made Jiang Wenwen curious. She moved closer and asked, “What are your thoughts? Care to share?”
“Let me take a look at her notes first.”
“Alright then.” Jiang Wenwen stopped questioning and sat on one of the seats by the sides.
Not long after, the nurse ran in with her notebook and gave it to Mu Yu.
Cases of around ten citizens getting injured due to the removal of manhole covers were recorded in the notebook. It was completed with detailed records of timestamps and locations of each incident, with side notes of every victims’ name and contact details.
“The victims that have their names in the book were hurt near our hospital and I reached out to speak with them. As for those who were injured in other regions, I only keep up with them through news and my friends from other hospitals so I’m not really sure about their information. If you want to know more, you’d have to go to the police stations—that is also if they made police reports,” the nurse explained.
However, Mu Yu stared at the notebook intently as if she hadn’t heard anything. Mu Yu was silent and frowning.
After seeing that she still hadn’t spoken for a while, the nurse cautiously asked, “Is this useful for the police to solve the case?”
“Huh? Of course, it helps a lot, actually. However, I still have to look more into this.” Mu Yu snapped back from her daze and chuckled lightly. “I have to borrow this notebook of yours for the time being.”
“Oh, sure. You can take it. I won’t disturb you from solving the case then,” the nurse said and sensibly left the ward.
“Yu, what great discovery have you made?” Jiang Wenwen moved closer, curious when she noticed that there was something wrong with her best friend’s expression.
Mu Yu stared at the notebook and pondered for a while. Then pointed at the notebook, “Look at these two cases.”
Jiang Wenwen started reading from where Mu Yu’s finger pointed, “17th of September, 10 p.m. Rainy. At the entrance of Cheng Xi Park, a girl riding her bike was slightly injured due to the removal of the manhole cover; 5th of October, 11 p.m. Rainy. At the intersection of Ying Bing Highway and Yan He Road, an elderly person suffered heavy injuries from falling into the drainage system due to the removal of the manhole cover.”
After reading the notes, she exclaimed, “How horrible! We don’t even know who will be hurt next.”
“Maybe… something like this might not happen tonight.”
Jiang Wenwen was confused, “Why?”
“Hopefully, my guesses are wrong. Take care of Huan for me, I need to go out and settle something. Oh yeah, can you lend me your phone? My phone battery died.”
“Oh, sure! Hey, where are you going? How long are you going to take? If Young Master Qin wakes up…”
“I’ll be back in no time.” Mu Yu quickened her pace and left the ward. She looked for a secluded place and gave Rong Jian a call, saying that she had something to tell him.
Not long after, Rong Jian’s figure could be seen at the end of the corridor.
“Hey, is Huan—”
“He’s fine. Here.” She gave him the notebook that belonged to the nurse. Then, she grimly told him her guesses.
Rong Jian’s eyes shone in realization after he listened. “So that was why!”
“I really hope I’m wrong about this!”
“I will go check the license now, it will be no time before we get the results!” Rong Jian said as he rushed off.
“Chief Rong…”
“Take care of Huan, I will notify you if there is any progress!” By the time he finished his sentence, his silhouette had already disappeared from the corridor.
“Sigh…”
Mu Yu’s lonely sigh echoed through the hallway.
If the ‘Wan Xiaoying incident’ was just like her deductions, she couldn’t imagine how the nice people that did their best to help him out would feel.
She really hoped that her deductions were just mere assumptions.
Right now, she felt bitter. Although she tried to make herself feel at ease, she couldn’t wipe off the somber expression on her face because she knew that what she hoped for most likely wouldn’t come true. There was a high chance of this guy being the terrible person who removed manhole covers to injure others.
Him!
Why did this happen?
She couldn’t seem to come to terms with it.
She dragged herself back to Qin Jinhuan’s ward with heavy footsteps. Initially, she wanted to enter the ward, but when the thought of Jiang Wenwen bombarding her with questions came in mind, she stopped and instead went to sit at the benches outside to take a small nap.
Right then, the phone rang. From the screen, Mu Yu saw that the call was from an unknown number. Not thinking much about it, she took the call.
“I couldn’t get through Yu’s phone! Please tell me where she is! I need to see her right now!”
Yihan?!
Then, Mu Yu realized that this was actually Jiang Wenwen’s phone. She tensed up.
Why was he so eager to meet her? It couldn’t be that something had happened to him, right?!
