My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 73
Chapter 73 Silent Company
It was the VIP ward in Fraternity Hospital.
Qin Jinhuan was pale, his eyes closely shut as he lay motionless on the hospital bed.
Mu Yu stood next to the hospital bed, her hands clenched together as she stared nervously at the doctor who was examining him.
Rong Jian and Wen Zeyu stood at the other side of the bed as they too were staring at the doctor with wide eyes.
After a while, the doctor removed her mask and explained, “He’s fine, no worries. He was just overwhelmed by emotions. A few days’ rest and he should be okay.”
Rong Jian got pissed at her answer. “You call this fine when he’s been unconscious for more than half an hour? Do you even know how to treat a patient? Go find an experienced doctor to have a check on him if you’re not one!”
The female doctor was indeed too young, as she looked no older than 24 years old, and Mu Yu couldn’t help but begin to doubt her words. But even so, she felt it was inappropriate for him to question the doctor so directly, so she shook her head and gave Rong Jian a look. Qin Jinhuan was still lying on the hospital bed, and it was not good to offend the doctor.
“Hey! How could you question Ying’s medical skills?” Wen Zeyu bluntly pushed Rong Jian aside and explained to Mu Yu with a smile. “Mu Yu, don’t take Ying for being young, as her medical skills mustn’t be underestimated, and she’s well known in An City. Don’t listen to Rong Jian’s nonsense. If Ying says Qin Jinhuan is fine, he is definitely fine, so please be rest assured.”
“He forever sees me as a little girl, and never believed in my medical skills.” The female doctor rolled her eyes at Rong Jian in disdain and snorted. “That’s why he never lets me treat him.”
Rong Jian wanted to retort back, but saw Wen Zeyu’s warning glare, so he shrugged and corrected himself. “That’s because I haven’t been sick since you became a doctor, okay?”
“Nope, it’s because you’re afraid that Mom and Dad will let me check on you and I will treat you to death.”
Originally preoccupied with Qin Jinhuan’s condition, Mu Yu was amused by the female doctor’s deadpan joke, and finally figured out her relationship with Rong Jian.
“Mu Yu, let me introduce her.” Wen Zeyu laughed as he wrapped his arms around Rong Ying. “This is Rong Ying, my girlfriend. She… Ouch! My little Ying, are you trying to murder your own husband?”
Rong Ying didn’t hesitate to wave the syringe in her hand and warn, “The needle I use next wouldn’t be as clean as the one I pricked you with just now if you dare say I’m your girlfriend next time!”
Rong Jian rubbed in just in time. “Better put some Rabies virus or something like the plague virus to turn him into an animal within seconds, since he loves biting people all the time.”
“Hey! Rong Jian, how could you say something so cruel? You’re my brother-in…” Seeing Rong Ying holding the syringe up again, Wen Zeyu was frightened and covered his head as he quickly corrected himself. “Aren’t you my buddy?”
“Enough, stop bitching. You all should leave rather than disturb Huan from having his rest.” Rong Ying spoke as she handed the medical equipment to the nurse, who was waiting aside.
“But I…”
“Mu Yu, you can stay here with Huan.” Rong Ying smiled gently as she looked at Mu Yu.
Wen Zeyu reached the door, but noticed that Rong Ying wasn’t leaving with the nurse and immediately paused before turning around. “Little Ying, aren’t you leaving too?”
“I’ll be looking after Mu Yu and Huan.”
“Count me in th—” Upon seeing Rong Ying’s glare, Wen Zeyu muttered with a wronged expression. “The nurses will come in once they’re called upon. Do you really have to stay? I haven’t seen you for so long. Can’t you chat with me just to get rid of my lovesick?”
“We shall talk about this after Huan wakes up.”
“You must follow your words. Don’t stand me up again, or I’ll be hurt…”
“Alright, enough, stop pestering my sister all the time!” Rong Jian grabbed Wen Zeyu out of the ward and closed the door behind him.
“You still remember that she’s your sister? Look at all those vicious remarks you gave her!”
“That’s between us siblings. It has nothing to do with you!”
“How could it have nothing to do with me? She’s my girlfriend!”
“You still dare to say she’s your girlfriend? Aren’t you afraid she’ll poke you with the syringe?”
As they walked further away from the ward and she could no longer hear their arguments, Mu Yu shook her head with a smile and withdrew her gaze.
“Wen Zeyu loves to talk nonsense all the time. Mu Yu, don’t listen to his blabbers.” Rong Ying handed her a glass of water.
“Thank you.” Mu Yu took the glass, but she didn’t drink it. Instead, she couldn’t help but ask softly, “Dr. Rong, is Huan really going to be okay?”
“He’s fine. Mu Yu, you can be rest assured.”
“Then why hasn’t he woken up yet?”
“That’s because I saw that he was cranky just now, and apparently wasn’t getting enough sleep, which is why I gave him some sleeping medicine to help him have a good rest.”
“Oh.” Mu Yu was relieved at last. Recalling her displeasure toward Rong Jian a moment ago, she quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, Dr. Rong. I didn’t mean to question your medical skills. I just…”
“I understand. You’re just worried about Huan.” Rong Ying gave Mu Yu a warm smile, examining her face carefully as she spoke, “Mu Yu, you have dark circles under your eyes, and don’t look very well. You haven’t been eating and sleeping well these two days, haven’t you?”
Mu Yu sighed, “Too many things have happened in these two days.”
“Don’t worry, Mu Yu. Everything will fall into place. You will be fine after surviving this mess.”
“I really do hope so.”
“You will. I’m sure that Huan…”
A knock on the door cut off Rong Ying’s sentence. A nurse entered the ward and whispered, “Director Rong, Wan Xiaoying’s family wants to see you.”
“Wan Xiaoying has been discharged from the hospital, hasn’t she? Why would they want to see me?” Rong Ying stood up as she asked.
“They are here to send you a silk banner as a token of appreciation. They are waiting outside your office.”
“Got it, I’ll come right away. Mu Yu, I’ll be back soon.” Rong Ying finished her sentence and hurriedly left the ward.
Now Mu Yu was left alone with Qin Jinhuan in the ward, who was deep in his sleep. It was absolute silence except for the pitter-patter of the rain on the windows.
Mu Yu sat down beside Qin Jinhuan’s bed. She stared at his pale face, gently holding his hand, which was lying outside the blanket. With pain in her eyes, she stroked his hand while silently praying for him.
She was well aware of his affection for his late mother and hatred toward Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, as well as the torture he was suffering at the moment. However, when it came to Qin Xiaozhi, she was out of her wits just like him, and could do nothing except to bear with it.
Seeing him frowning even in a deep sleep, her heart ached again as she tried to sooth them with her hand, until his expression returned normal she then could let out a sigh of relief.
“Huan…”
She called out unconsciously, and was surprised by her own soft tone.
She used to hate his teasing and frivolity, but seeing him lying so quietly now, she couldn’t stop herself from hoping that he would wake up and tease her again as usual, so that she could grit her teeth and fight back.
To tell the truth, she missed their duel of wits terribly, as there was lots of fun in it.
If she could, she would love to spend the rest of her colorless days arguing with him.
Suddenly, she recalled the song her parents enjoyed singing to each other at home. She began to sing quietly:
“Let me hold you now, as I’m afraid it’s too late
Till I feel your wrinkles and see the passage of time.
Till I’m certain you’re real, till I lose all my strength
For you, I am willing.
Even if I can’t move anymore, I’ll keep my eyes on you
Till I feel that your hair began showing the white of snow
Till I lose my sight, till I’ve lost my breath
Let us never part.
If I can give up on the entire world
At least there’s you whom I could cherish
And you being here is one of life’s miracles.
Perhaps I can forget the entire world
But I’m just not willing to lose touch with you
The beauty spot on your palm, I remember where it lies.”
Mu Yu hummed repeatedly without realizing there were tears in her eyes.
Only until this moment did she realize why her parents like singing this song in duets when this song clearly isn’t one.
There were many ways to convey deep feelings that might not necessarily be described in words.
“Mu Yu…”
Realizing that Rong Ying was standing behind her, Mu Yu hastily wiped her tears and forced a smile. “You’re back already?”
“Yes. It’s just to accept a silk banner. Mu Yu, you…”
“I’m fine.” Calming down and not wanting to worry Rong Ying, Mu Yu tried to switch the topic by praising her. “I didn’t expect you to be the director at such a young age. You’re amazing!”
Rong Ying tried to make light of it. “Nothing to be amazed about, as I’m just inheriting the family business. My dad founded this hospital, but since my brother was determined to be a detective, he refused the path my dad set for him. I’ve always been interested in medicine ever since I was a kid so after finishing my studies, my dad naturally handed the hospital over to me.”
“Well, the choice your dad made in handing over the hospital to you proved to be a wise one.”
“Mu Yu, you’re exaggerating.”
“How am I exaggerating? There are people sending silk banners to the hospital.”
“That was just a coincidence.”
As she wasn’t really close with Rong Ying, Mu Yu seized the opportunity to ask her so that it wouldn’t be filled with awkward silence. “Would you mind telling me how?”
“That is quite a long story. “Rong Ying took a stool and sat next to Mu Yu before continuing. “On a stormy night six months ago, I came home from work and saw an electric car lying on the side of the road near the hospital. Out of my doctor’s instinct, I figured that a traffic accident had happened, so I got out of my car with an umbrella to check it out, and sure enough, a girl was lying near the electric car. It turned out the accident was caused by a stolen manhole cover. I rushed the girl to the hospital. She was seriously injured, but since she was saved in time, her life wasn’t in danger, though she was hospitalized for half a year. Her parents had always wanted to thank me with a gift, but since I had refused, they had a silk banner made specially for me instead. In fact there’s no need for them to do so, since anyone would be more than happy to lend a helping hand when seeing someone injured.”
“Director Rong, I don’t think so. If everyone is as kind as you, there wouldn’t be so many Wan Xiaoying incidents then.” The nurse who entered the ward to send Qin Jinhuan’s medicine couldn’t help but voice her own opinion.
Mu Yu was curious. “What is the Wan Xiaoying incident about?”
“The story goes like this.” Rong Ying explained with a smile, “In the past six months, our hospital has been treating many passers-by who were injured because of stolen manhole covers. I heard that there are other hospitals that have also treated many of such victims. All the victims had gone through the same incident as Wan Xiaoying’s, so we decided to call this the Wan Xiaoying incident.”
“Haven’t you called the police yet?”
“I did. But these incidents always happened on stormy nights, and the police weren’t able to find any clues, so they became pending cases.”
“And thanks to this, we dare not ride our electric cars on rainy nights and risk being injured ourselves. Some of my colleagues are too scared to even go home because of the rain today, so they are all staying here with those on duty.” The nurse chimed in angrily. “I hope the police can catch the psycho soon, and…”
Just as she was speaking, the door burst open without warning.
