My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 67
Chapter 67 Touched
After around ten minutes, Mu Yu took the things she needed, and carefully put them into her bag. She grabbed her bag and opened the door quietly, before tiptoeing through the living room and sneaking out of the house.
By the time she knocked on Wen Zeyu’s door, it was already three o’clock in the morning. However, the person who opened the door for her was Qin Jinhuan.
He was still in his day clothes, hair slightly disheveled, and he looked distraught with his bloodshot eyes. It was obvious that he hadn’t been sleeping.
“Why aren’t you asleep?” She was very surprised.
“Why are you here at this hour?” He was also caught by surprise.
“I was worried about you.”
He forced a smile. “What is there to worry about?”
“I have something for you.” Mu Yu pulled him into the house. She poured out everything from her bag, and pushed them to him.
There were certificates of ownership for two residential estates, three bank cards, some jewelry and a cheque of 20,000,000.
“Why are you giving me these?”
“These are the capital for you to start a business.” Mu Yu sounded a little weak as she continued, “The cheque is from your family. As for mine, these are the only valuables that we have.”
“You stole them?”
Mu Yu nodded her head meekly.
“If you give me all of this, what are they going to eat? Where are they going to live?”
“I still have a job, don’t I?” She acted tough and answered, “Although I’m still on my internship, my salary is enough to cover mine and my family’s expenses, as long as we use it sparingly. As for accommodation, I heard that my workplace provides a dormitory for their staff. I can ask Chief Rong to settle this for me. You don’t have to worry.”
She wanted to say “Stop rejecting, you can pay me back after you start earning”, but she was worried that it might be a mental burden to him. After giving it a good thought, she didn’t say it out loud. She turned to look at him timidly, as she was afraid that he wouldn’t accept it. After all, these things weren’t technically hers. She would disappoint her parents, but she really wanted to help him out. She then made another decision—as soon as dawn arrived, she would go to find a part-time job, and earn as much money as she could to provide her parents a better life.
Qin Jinhuan took another glance at the things on her hand, and smiled lightly. “These are your parents’ hard work. Aren’t you afraid that your mom will skin you alive once she finds out?”
He knew she had always been afraid of her mother.
“No, no. My mother may seem to have a sharp tongue, but she has a soft heart.” When she saw him looking at her in disbelief, she gritted her teeth and corrected herself, “It’s no big deal. I only need to take another lecture or another beating at most. She just has me, her only daughter, what can she do to me?”
“I can figure things out myself.”
She didn’t expect him to refuse her despite the persuading. Mu Yu was desperate. Placing her hands behind her, she took a few steps back, before responding quickly, “I know these aren’t of much help to you, but just accept them as an expression of my good will. You don’t have to worry about my parents. I won’t let them starve or go homeless.”
“I can handle everything just fine.”
“I know you can handle it well. I just want to help out however I can. I was the one who brought you into this state. I am already thankful that you didn’t suspect me. I mean it.” Tears filled in Mu Yu’s eyes.
“I’ve told you before, this has nothing to do with you.”
“But if it wasn’t for me…”
“Go and make me some noodles.”
“What?” Qin Jinhuan was obviously unwilling to continue this pointless conversation, but his change of topic caught Mu Yu off guard.
“I’m hungry. I didn’t have dinner yet.”
“Oh, okay, I’ll go and make it.”
Qin Jinhuan stared at Mu Yu, who was happily making her way into the kitchen, slightly spellbound.
Before any of this happened, she had always been difficult with him, and even tried all kinds of ways to enrage him, so that he would make her leave. Now that he was in trouble, he thought that she would be more than happy to leave him, but he didn’t expect this.
Staring at the deeds of residential properties and the bank cards lying on the coffee table, he felt something else flickering within him.
She was an obedient girl who always followed her parents’ orders, but actually stole those things just for him. He could imagine her wandering around the house nervously with her rising guilt toward her parents. But at this moment, she made clear of her conviction and sincerity.
What a silly girl.
He took another glance at the kitchen and cleared all the things away, before quietly putting them back into her bag. These things weren’t of any help to him indeed, but it was the thought that counted.
“There’s not much to eat in his kitchen. I only found a cup of instant noodles. We probably can’t order any takeouts since it’s already late. You’d have to put up with this.” Mu Yu placed the instant noodles on the coffee table with an embarrassed look.
“This will do, as long as it’s edible.”
“Of course it’s edible! I’ve checked, and it’s not expired.”
“It smells pretty good.” Qin Jinhuan took the fork, and started eating with a smile on his face.
Sadness filled Mu Yu’s eyes when she saw him enjoying his meal. “You haven’t eaten anything since this morning, have you?”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t answer and asked instead, “What about you?”
“I’ve eaten.”
“Really?”
“Yup, my parents were watching over me. I didn’t dare to refuse.”
“You must have only eaten a little. Am I right? Here, want some?” Qin Jinhuan handed his fork to her.
She shook her head. “You eat it. I’m not hungry.”
She had indeed eaten very little during dinner, and it was a lie when she said she wasn’t hungry. But the portion of one cup noodles was too little. Moreover, he was a man who had skipped two of his meals.
“You don’t want to eat with me?”
“No, it’s not that. It’s just that I ate too much instant noodles when I was in university, so now, I can’t even stand its smell.”
“It’s just to fill your stomach. Nothing to be picky about. Eat some.”
Knowing that Qin Jinhuan had seen through her hunger, Mu Yu hesitated and walked over to him. She took his fork, wrapped two short strands of noodles around it and ate them. Then, she gave back his fork and stood up at the same time.
“Let’s eat together.” Qin Jinhuan pulled her to sit down beside him. Then, he pushed the cup noodles to her, and just like that, both of them enjoyed it together. They glanced at each other from time to time, satisfaction filling their eyes, not even noticing the commotion upstairs.
On the first floor of the house, Rong Jian forcefully dragged Wen Zeyu into a room. After the door was closed, Rong Jian, who had been holding back the whole time, asked aloud, “There are so many instant noodles in your cabinet, why won’t you let me tell Huan?”
Wen Zeyu lay on the bed as he snickered, “Some food becomes tasteless when there’s too much of it. This is just nice.”
“What’s nice about it? It would be a miracle if they can fill their stomach by sharing just a cup of noodles! Huan hasn’t eaten anything the entire day. When he finally wanted to eat, you…”
“You and that dense head of yours! You know nothing about love. No wonder it takes you so long to get together with Pretty Bing. Can’t you tell that both of them aren’t just eating noodles, but flirting with each other too? Ahh, looking at them like this makes me eager to find a person to eat instant noodles with.”
“You’re a prick!” Rong Jian grabbed a pillow and threw it at him. “At times like this, you still have the mood to make this kind of joke.”
Wen Zeyu shrugged. “We must be more optimistic, especially in a time like this! Or do you want to see me and Huan dying from depression?”
“Stop talking nonsense!” Rong Jian glared at him. “I want to live a long life!”
The three of them had been childhood playmates. When they were young, they acted on impulse, and mimicked the way Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu took their Oath of the Peach Garden[1]. They even knelt on their knees and swore of ‘dying on the same day despite not being born on the same day’—just like how it was in the movies. When Rong Jian mentioned this, Wen Zeyu immediately laughed. “Don’t worry, those who don’t live long are good people. Huan and I are both terrible scoundrels.”
“You’re the biggest scoundrel, don’t you know that? I don’t even know how many girls have fallen victim to you over the years.”
“They have done so willingly, okay? They…” Wen Zeyu stopped talking as soon as he heard voices outside the room. He quietly walked to the door and stuck his ear to the door.
Rong Jian followed him nervously as well, and tried to listen closely like he did.
“It seems like they’ve entered the room.”
“Not ‘seem’, but they did indeed enter the room.” Wen Zeyu chuckled happily again. “Fire is indeed a test of gold. Congratulations to Huan for finally finding his true love.”
They all knew about the fake marriage deal between Qin Jinhuan and Mu Yu, which was made in order to take care of Qin Jinhuan’s grandpa.
“Although he lost on the swings, he has definitely gotten back on the roundabouts.” Rong Jian was also very glad. He had always had a good impression of Mu Yu, and couldn’t help but hope that his best buddy would truly fall in love with this girl. However, he was worried that Qin Jinhuan’s reckless personality would hurt her. Even so Qin Jinhuan’s attitude toward Mu Yu had really put him at ease these days
But soon, he got concerned again. “Zeyu, you have seen with your own eyes the way Mu Yu’s parents acted today. Now that Huan is in this poverty-stricken state, I’m afraid it would be even harder for the two of them to be together.”
Wen Zeyu didn’t agree with him. “This sort of people is the easiest to deal with. They will crawl their way back to Huan as soon as he is no longer in this state.”
“If Grandpa had really listened to what Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun says, and keep tearing Huan down, will there ever be a time for Huan to rise again?”
Wen Zeyu’s smile instantly froze on his face. After a while, he murmured, “Grandpa is probably just acting so in a fit of anger. After some time, he will give up on going against Huan, won’t he? After all, Huan is his biological grandson. No matter what, Grandpa would still consider the familial sentiments regarding Huan’s late mother. As long as he stops trying to wear Huan down, we still have the opportunity to help him.”
He was well aware of the influence Qin Xiaozhi had in An City.
Rong Jian shook his head. “Don’t you forget the purpose of Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun playing dirty to bewitch Grandpa. In order to secure Qin Chengxi’s future, they wouldn’t let Huan go so easily.”
Upon hearing Rong Jian’s words, Wen Zeyu was at a loss of words. Once again, he fell silent.
Rong Jian sighed and muttered, “Tomorrow, I will beg my dad to look for Huan’s grandpa to talk about this.”
“Your dad has already been rebuffed. Will he still do it?” Wen Zeyu wasn’t too hopeful about it., because Grandpa was notorious for his stubborn behavior.
“Just have a go at it and we’ll see. If not, why would I use the word ‘beg’?”
Wen Zeyu nodded, and looked sternly toward the direction of Qin Jinhuan’s room.
Meanwhile, Qin Jinhuan had wanted to go for a walk around the backyard, and asked Mu Yu to go into the room where Wen Zeyu had arranged for him. However, Mu Yu refused and insisted on staying with him. In order to stop her from worrying, he decided to return to the room with her as well.
The bed was as wide as the one they used to sleep in. But, to their surprise, there was only one pillow.
“Get some sleep first. I’m not tired.”
“Let’s go to bed together.” Mu Yu called out at Qin Jinhuan, who was making his way to the sofa.
Surprised, Qin Jinhuan paused. When he turned around, he saw how embarrassed she was, so he teased, “Aren’t you afraid of me taking advantage of you?”
“Are you still in the mood of doing it at times like this?”
Qin Jinhuan smiled upon hearing her words, and gestured to her to wash up. Indeed, just like what she said, he wasn’t in the mood of taking advantage of her, but that didn’t mean that he wasn’t in the mood of teasing her.
After Mu Yu came out, it was his turn to go into the bathroom to wash up. By the time he exited, Mu Yu was already sleeping by the edge of the bed. He knew that she wouldn’t have any sense of security without the usual boundary between them, so he didn’t say anything, and merely switched off the light before lying down on the other side of the bed.
In the dark, the two of them—who had their backs against each other—had a hard time falling asleep, as they were both deeply buried in their own thoughts.
Knock! Knock! Knock!
“Huan, something’s happened! Open the door, hurry up!”
Qin Jinhuan and Mu Yu woke up in shock. They jumped in astonishment when they realized that they woke up unexpectedly in each others’ arms. As they quickly got up, they tidied their own clothes.
“Huan! Huan! Hurry up and open the door! Someone is in danger!”
Both of their expressions changed at those words, and they rushed to the door.

[1] Liu Bei, Zhang Fei and Guan Yu are all historical figures from the late eastern Han dynasty. They were included in a fictional event Oath of the Peach Garden, found in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. In this event, Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei took an oath of fraternity in a ceremony in the Peach Garden (believed to be in present-day Zhuozhou, Hebei), and became sworn brothers from then on.
