My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 340
Chapter 340 A Helpless Decision
Mu Yu rushed over to the director’s office before the sun had risen, dragging Rong Jian over to the forensic lab without allowing him to protest before Gu Jihui arrived at work. Liu Xiaofan, Yan Zihao, and Fan Lifeng—who all had been waiting in the director’s office—also followed her into the forensic lab.
“Yu, why are you here?” Rong Jian asked Mu Yu softly in a hoarse voice, his eyes rimmed with very obvious dark circles.
Mu Yu’s heart ached terribly at the sight of his heavily sleep-deprived appearance, and she choked up when she apologized to him.
Rong Jian chuckled softly, looking as though he was mocking himself. “I should be the one saying sorry instead.”
“Not just you, Chief Rong—I should apologize too,” Liu Xiaofan continued, regret written all over his face.
“And us too,” Yan Zihao and Fan Lifeng said in a small voice from the side.
“We’re sorry, Doctor Mu,” the three men said in unison.
Mu Yu sighed as she shook her head. “You three can’t be completely blamed for this. If we have to pin the blame on someone, it should be Qin Jinhuan. If he hadn’t forced you all, you wouldn’t have done this. At the end of the day, he’s the one in the wrong.”
“Young Master Qin is to blame, but he’s not fully to blame for this either. He hadn’t thought that Dong Wanqing would die,” Liu Xiaofan hastily explained when he saw Mu Yu placing the blame on Qin Jinhuan completely. “According to our initial plans, we were supposed to only use the matter of Dong Wanqing to chase Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun out of An City. Once this was done, we would try to find a way to release Dong Wanqing. Young Master Qin would give her some money, and she would take it, leave An City, and live out her days happily. None of us ever thought she would die!”
“He’s right.” Yan Zihao continued to explain, “We first chose to help Young Master Qin not because he forced us to, but because we had seen through Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun’s evil nature. They would throw obstacles at him without so much as a warning, and they kept plunging Qing Tian Group into dire straits. Qing Tian Group is the largest taxpaying organization in An City, and it has done plenty of charity in the area. It truly has benefited the locals here. Coupled with our close friendship with Young Master Qin and the fact that he has never done anything wrong to us, we didn’t regret breaking the law to help him. We hoped that he could help Qing Tian escape from danger completely. Look at how much he hates Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, yet he never did anything violent to them—he simply ran them out of An City. How could he have possibly caused Dong Wanqing’s death? That’s why her death is only an accident!”
Mu Yu hadn’t expected them to still speak up for Qin Jinhuan even when they were in this situation, and to top it off, they had spouted such nonsensical excuses. Her guilt instantly morphed into rage. “It seems like you guys never broke the law. You were all doing it for the people! Do I have to get Director Gu to forward a report to the top brass about your heroic acts?”
Yan Zihao could hear the sarcastic edge in her voice. A look of shame overcame him, and he no longer had the guts to say another word. On the other hand, Fan Lifeng said in a small voice, “Everything Zihao said is true.”
“Young Master Qin did give the three of us some money, but we later donated it all to the orphanage Dong Wanqing had volunteered at back when she was alive. Here’s the receipt.” Liu Xiaofan lowered his head and handed an envelope to Mu Yu. “However, since the amount we donated was on the larger side, we did it anonymously because we didn’t want to draw attention. Still, I personally gave the money to the director of the orphanage. Dong Wanqing’s death weighed heavily on Young Master Qin. Not only did he give her an elaborate funeral, he even had the orphanage renovated in her name. Since I was the one who reached out to the orphanage’s director, he knows me. The orphanage is in the suburbs of West City. You can go there and take a look if you don’t believe me.”
As Mu Yu tore open the envelope to check its contents, Liu Xiaofan continued to speak. “Doctor Mu, we weren’t seeking your forgiveness when we told you all that. Mistakes have been made, and we are willing to face punishment for it. We just thought that your misunderstandings toward Young Master Qin have run too deep. So, we want to tell you that Dong Wanqing’s death wasn’t his main intent. We hope that you will not continue to question his character and allow this to affect your relationship with him as husband and wife.”
Rong Jian finally spoke up as well after remaining silent the whole time. “I understand things clearly now, Yu. Actually, Huan didn’t mean to protect Yin Anran; it was just that if he didn’t protect her, he wouldn’t have been able to push Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun back with this situation. He intended to protect Yin Anran and then get payback on her. After Dong Wanqing’s death, he didn’t dare to pursue this matter anymore since he was worried that you and Grandpa would get suspicious. Well, that’s how things have evolved today. I think that you can also clearly see the circumstances we’re in now—someone purposely leaked this to you, anticipating that you and Huan would split and then taking advantage of the chance presented to strike at Qing Tian and the Qin Family. The person would then stand back to reap the rewards. I even suspect that the one behind this is also connected to the perpetrator of those murder cases that have been tied to Qing Tian Group. Xiaofan, the others, and I are the ones responsible for overseeing those cases. If all four of us are dismissed and put under investigation, I think that the case will be postponed even further.”
His words along with his drawn-out sigh made Mu Yu lapse into silence. She didn’t say a thing for a long while.
Rong Jian and the others didn’t make a sound either, and the silence finally broke when someone’s phone rang.
“It’s from Director Gu.” Rong Jian pulled out his phone, but he didn’t answer the call. He simply walked outside with brisk steps.
“Hey! Chief Rong!” Mu Yu frantically called after him. “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to see Director Gu. I called him earlier today, and he should be here now.” Rong Jian didn’t stop walking. “What needs to be reported has to be reported.”
“Chief Rong!” Mu Yu rushed over and stopped him. “Apart from you, who else knows that Huan wants to report to the police?”
“Us,” Liu Xiaofan piped up.
Rong Jian nodded. “For the time being, it’s just us. Since the situation is dire, I intend to report in with Director Gu first before getting Huan to personally tell the director the truth.”
“Since Director Gu doesn’t know about it, don’t tell him then.”
“Don’t tell the director?!” Rong Jian stopped in his tracks before he carefully asked her, “So, you’re saying that—”
“Let the past be. We can’t let the present become a mess because of something in the past.”
Mu Yu was very much resigned when she said that, but it was also the smartest thing to do. She knew deep down that if she didn’t keep the situation under proper control, there might be an unexpected butterfly effect down the line. She didn’t want to see the various chaos that would arise because of that.
Rong Jian continued to let his phone ring. After remaining quiet for several seconds, he asked, “Then, are you satisfied about this?”
Mu Yu’s smile was pained and helpless. “You guys have already achieved your objective. Why do you have to ask this then?”
Having understood her underlying meaning, Liu Xiaofan quickly cut in and said, “Doctor Mu, we didn’t tell you all that to cover up our mistakes, nor do we want to stop you from looking further into it. We only spoke up for Young Master Qin because of our conscience. Even if you don’t continue to insist on overturning Dong Wanqing’s case or take further action for what we’ve done, our conscience will still condemn us for the rest of our lives. I won’t lie; actually, during Dong Wanqing’s funeral, we already made a decision. Even if the truth about everything didn’t leak out, we would all resign after we have cracked the murder cases because we have all sullied the uniforms we wear.”
“We wanted to wait until the murder cases have been solved before resigning because we wanted to try and make up for our mistakes. The reason we chose not to turn ourselves in is because we will end up dragging many other innocent people in,” Yan Zihao added.
Fan Lifeng let out a sigh. “Still, even if we’re no longer part of the Crime Unit, we will continue to hold ourselves to the police’s strict standards. We promise that we will no longer do anything that will go against our conscience.”
Mu Yu was once again stunned, having not expected them to say that. After a long while, she let out a deep sigh. “Why did you make yourselves suffer like this? If you knew what would happen, why did you have to do any of this?”
“What do you mean by that?” Gu Jihui’s voice suddenly interrupted their conversation, startling everyone.
Gu Jihui, however, didn’t notice their strange behavior as he rebuked Rong Jian in faux anger. “You called me and asked me to come to the station around the crack of dawn, telling me that you had something to tell me that was of the utmost urgency, you little brat. I hadn’t even had breakfast yet when I rushed all the way here, and you didn’t even pick up my phone calls either. What’s your excuse for that?”
Rong Jian gripped his phone tightly and took a deep breath before stepping forward. “Director Gu, Qin Jinhuan came looking for me last night and told me something very important!”
“What is so important? Come now, take a seat first before you get into it.” Gu Jihui smiled as he sat down, signaling for the others to sit as well.
“He said that Doctor Mu’s car accident from before…”
“Let me take this!” Mu Yu quickly interrupted Rong Jian. “Wasn’t Madam Feng’s leg injured as well when I got into that accident? Her leg still hasn’t fully recovered even now. If she walks too quickly, her leg will hurt. It aches even when the weather is warmer, causing her plenty of inconvenience in her work and day-to-day life.”
Rong Jian and the other three men weren’t the only ones stupefied by this; even Gu Jihui had a confused look on his face. “What does Doctor Feng’s leg injury have to do with Mr. Qin talking to Rong Jian last night?”
“Plenty, actually! Have some water first.” Mu Yu poured a glass of warm water for Gu Jihui before she continued, “You know that Doctor Feng and Chief Rong have been courting each other, yes?”
“Of course.”
“Then, I suppose you also know that your relative, Meng Sihan, loves Chief Rong and is also adored by Rong Jian’s parents? And that she is also locked in as their daughter-in-law of choice?”
“I do, yes.” Gu Jihui looked awkward then. “Truthfully, I have given the young girl some advice, but I have not been able to reason with her.”
“Don’t take my words the wrong way, Director Gu. We aren’t asking you to reason with her; we’re asking you to reason with Rong Jian instead.”
“Rong Jian?!” Gu Jihui was even more lost now. “Why would I need to reason with him?”
Rong Jian was sweating buckets as he looked at Mu Yu with a lost look on his face, utterly confused.
“Talk him and Madam Feng out of resigning to elope. Look, they even have their resignation letters written already.” As she spoke, Mu Yu snatched over the envelope in Rong Jian’s hand. In truth, the envelope didn’t contain a letter of resignation, but a written self-criticism report instead.
“His parents prefer to have a beautiful daughter-in-law who is also as cultured and sophisticated as your niece is. Madam Feng doesn’t have a way with words, and she also isn’t skilled at dolling herself up. And now, her leg is disabled too. Actually, her leg just hasn’t fully recovered yet, but Rong Jian’s parents still insist on calling Madam Feng crippled. They greatly dislike her when compared to their opinion on Meng Sihan. Yesterday, they even gave Chief Rong an ultimatum—either he listens to them and marries Meng Sihan, or they will expose Madam Feng’s past online. I have no idea how they and Meng Sihan know about Madam Feng’s past either.”
Mu Yu just had to say that Meng Sihan knew about Feng Rubing’s past to get a rise out of Meng Sihan’s uncle, Gu Jihui. There wasn’t a need for her to bring up Rong Jian’s parents. Nonetheless, he couldn’t just sit there. “Didn’t I give out an order? How did it get leaked out? If I find out who is responsible for the leak, I will not show any mercy to them!”
“That’s not the main problem here, Director.” Mu Yu hadn’t thought that her words would draw Gu Jihui’s sharp eye, so she immediately changed the topic. “The point is, my husband was worried that Madam Feng would be hurt after this, so he suggested a hare-brained scheme to Chief Rong—he suggested that Chief Rong elope with Madam Feng. Chief Rong is in charge of those murder cases. With the cases unsolved and the culprit roaming free, how are you going to deal with the top brass if he leaves just like that?”
As she spoke, she tore the envelope and the paper within it to shreds.
Seeing how everyone hadn’t suspected his true meaning, Gu Jihui mentally let out a sigh of relief. But when he heard Mu Yu speak once more, he immediately regarded Rong Jian with a stony gaze. “Also, who said that you’re allowed to resign? You really are jumping the gun! Will escaping solve anything? That is just the actions of a coward! Just do your work. I’ll have a talk with your parents.”
“Hey, Director Gu, Rong Jian’s parents are prideful. If you go straight to them and bring up Madam Feng, they will certainly not take your words kindly. Why don’t you think of a way to cajole your niece back to Australia? Perhaps she won’t be as infatuated with Chief Rong if she returns to Australia and meets another man?”
Gu Jihui nodded, thinking that Mu Yu’s words made sense. “For now, we will have to make do with this stopgap measure. This matter is not something that should be delayed. I will look for Meng Sihan now.”
“I apologize for all the trouble, Director.”
“It’s not a bother.” Gu Jihui then looked at Rong Jian and gently patted his shoulder. “Young people like you can’t be too rash. Acting hastily will never solve your problems. What you should focus on is cracking those cases as soon as possible—only by solving those murders and proving your worth can Rubing then stand proudly in front of your parents, understand?” He asked with a meaningful tone.
“You’re right, Director. I will do all I can to solve the cases.”
“You all try your best to cooperate with Rong Jian when working on those murders. As long as those murders are solved, your futures will be bright. Good luck.” After saying that, Gu Jihui left the forensic lab quickly.
“Yu, you…”
Mu Yu interrupted Rong Jian when she saw him and the others looking at her in unison. “I know what you’re going to say, so save it. Listen to Director Gu and work on those murder cases. Make up for your wrongdoings through your actions. We should…”
At this moment, her phone rang. When she saw that it was from Qin Jinhuan and that the time displayed on the screen was 7.30 AM, she was suddenly reminded that she had ordered him to meet her at the Bureau of Civil Administration at 8 in the morning. All of a sudden, she felt something she couldn’t describe—was he calling her now to ask if she had reached the bureau yet?
After several seconds of hesitation, Mu Yu ended up answering the call in a soft voice. “Hello?”
“Where are you?” It was a familiar voice, but the tone was flat.
“I’m at work.” She didn’t ask him anything else. Instead, she waited for him to ask her why she was at the bureau.
“Okay, I’ll come pick you up now. Meet me by the entrance.”
“Are you going to take me to the bureau?” She wanted to ask him that, but she swallowed those words just as they were about to escape her throat. She made a sound of acknowledgment before hanging up.
By now, Rong Jian and the others had already left whereas Feng Rubing had yet to clock in. The only one in the forensic lab was her. Mu Yu went to the bureau’s entrance to wait for Qin Jinhuan, her heart filled with complicated feelings.
