My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 326
Chapter 326 The Innocent Girl
“H-Huan…” When she heard noises around her, Qin Chengxi raised her head and saw her brother. Then, she hastily hid the hand that was placed on her ear.
Qin Jinhuan caught sight of the cell phone she was trying to hide and asked, “Did you fight with Shang Qi?”
“N-No, we’re fine,” Qin Chengxi replied with a panicked expression.
“Then why are you crying?”
“I-I’m not.” Realizing there were tears at the corner of her eyes, she quickly wiped them off with her sleeve before responding to Qin Jinhuan with a forced smile.
“We saw you crying, though!” Mu Yu, who speedily followed after, came over and expressed her concern. “What happened? Come, don’t hold it in all by yourself.”
“I-I…” After hesitating for a while, Qin Chengxi blurted as her eyes glistened, “I’m just worried about Grandpa.”
“Really?” Mu Yu asked in disbelief.
In response, Qin Chengxi awkwardly nodded her head. As she was about to explain herself, Qin Jinhuan suddenly grabbed her hand and snatched the phone away.
“Hey…”
“Password.”
“Huan…”
“Password!”
Qin Jinhuan raised his voice out of nowhere with a gloomy face. Meanwhile, Qin Chengxi had always been afraid of him, and she was stunned by this. Upon seeing this, Mu Yu advised the man not to be so aggressive toward his sister. Nonetheless, his sister had already revealed the password as Mu Yu was speaking to Qin Jinhuan.
The latter disregarded Mu Yu’s reminder and entered the password at once.
Once the phone was unlocked, the contact list appeared on the screen. Listed on top of the recently contacted list was ‘Mommy’, and Qin Jinhuan was infuriated upon seeing that. Instantly, he rebuked the girl in a belligerent tone.
“You’re still in contact with her? Didn’t I tell you not to have any interactions with them?”
Ever since Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun left An City, Qin Jinhuan had changed all of Qin Chengxi’s contact information in order to take better care of his sister, assuming that if she were not to initiate any interaction with her parents, they would definitely not do so as well.
At that moment, Qin Chengxi anxiously stuttered, “I-I’m sorry, Huan… I…”
“Why did you talk to them?”
“I’m sorry, Huan.” Once again, Qin Chengxi burst into tears. “It’s because they missed me, and I miss them too. No matter what happens, they’re still my parents, aren’t they?”
Immediately, Qin Jinhuan sensed something odd. “Were they the ones who contacted you first?”
Qin Chengxi was taken aback by this, and she reluctantly nodded her head as she could never tell her brother a lie.
“How did they get in touch with you?”
“They sent me a letter.”
Upon hearing that, Qin Jinhuan was visibly irritated. “A letter?”
In order to prevent her parents from taking more advantage of her, he had renewed all of her contact information to cut off contact from her parents. Nonetheless, the only flaw was that her address remained the same. Since it was a matter of concern, Qin Jinhuan had hired specialized personnel to scrutinize every single parcel that was to enter the house and even ordered his subordinates to immediately report to him whenever his sister received any form of delivery. Now that her parents’ letter had reached her, he realized his subordinates did not take his words seriously.
When she saw his face, Qin Chengxi didn’t want to drag the subordinates into this mess and quickly explained to him, “They actually sent me some clothing, and the letter was hidden beneath it. Xiang and the rest did check it, but they thought it was simply a purchase I made online.”
Since Shang Qi had been rather hectic with work recently, Qin Chengxi, who was never an outgoing one, didn’t want to trouble Li Xianglan and Yu Zhongguang, so she would often acquire products online.
“Where’s the letter, then?”
“I tore it,” she answered feebly.
“What did they write?”
“They said… that they missed me, and they gave me their numbers to contact them.”
“What else?!” Qin Jinhuan half-yelled impatiently.
“Also… also…”
“You’re scaring her, Huan—just let her speak.” Upon seeing how Qin Chengxi was trembling, Mu Yu reminded her partner not to startle the girl. As she dragged Qin Chengxi to the couch, she comforted, “No worries, come sit with me. Tell us what you have to say slowly.”
Since Qin Chengxi was already overwhelmed by her brother’s intimidation, she could barely say a word, let alone sit down. As she peeked at her brother from the corner of her eye pitiably, she stammered, “T-They told me that they’re c-currently in a slump, and t-they’re being oppressed by some people. They also m-miss me, and…”
“So they coerced you to plead with me to let them come back to An City?”
“No, they didn’t coerce me or anything. They were just crying and begging me to help…” Qin Chengxi had intended to cover up for her parents, but when she noticed that she was getting carried away, she quickly switched her words. “I promised them nothing, though!”
“Do not promise them anything! They should not return no matter what. The company is already in chaos; if they come back and start anything stupid among the turmoil, it’ll surely doom the company!” Mu Yu blurted.
“No, it’s nothing like that! I didn’t promise to help!” Qin Chengxi was suddenly reminded of her grandfather’s collapse, and she feared that her brother would misunderstand as well. She hastily waved her hand and said, “I didn’t tell Grandpa about this, Huan—he has no idea how my parents are right now. There’s no connection between his sickness and this situation!”
As she spoke, she started to weep again. “Although I’m pretty sure Dad and Mom have changed for the better, I know they’re still not allowed to return to An City. After all the many things they’ve done to hurt you and Grandpa, the agony they face right now is only the punishment they deserve.”
Upon hearing that, Qin Jinhuan tensed his brows and squinted his eyes as he coldly questioned Qin Chengxi, “In that case, what do you think about it?”
Having sensed his skepticism, the girl, who was as timid as a frightened little bunny, explained nervously, “I’m just telling the truth, Huan—I swear I’m not hinting at anything. Please don’t look too much into it!”
“I’m not. I just want to know what you really think, as well as what you plan to do.”
“I…” After hesitating for a while, Qin Chengxi timidly expressed her thoughts, “Perhaps I can go live with them?”
“Live with them?” Mu Yu was stupefied. “Didn’t you just say that they’re now living in agony? Do you intend to experience what they’re going through? Besides, how could you forget how they treated you before? Aren’t you scared of walking into the arms of the people who hurt you?”
In response, Qin Chengxi, who was constantly glancing at her brother, slowly raised her head as determination filled her eyes. “It’s true they have caused me to suffer before, but I’m sure they have thought things through after suffering so much—the value of family, for instance. Now that I’ve become their only hope, and with how much they need my presence, I believe they wouldn’t dare to try anything to harm me again.”
Upon hearing that, Qin Jinhuan countered, “Thought things through, the value of family, their only hope… Did they say all of these to you?”
The girl nodded her head, to which the man scornfully interrogated, “And you believe them?”
Taken aback by this, Qin Chengxi lowered her head once again as she weakly elaborated, “I think those words were spoken from their hearts. Initially, they wanted me to beg you to let them come back to An City, but I told them the decision was up to you and Grandpa to make due to the mistakes they had made, and that I wouldn’t be able to change your minds. Then, I said that if they really want to see me, instead of them coming back to An City, I could go visit them. Hearing that, they became joyous and immediately dispelled their desire to return. They said they missed me very much and wanted me to go see them as soon as I can. Meanwhile, since Grandpa is very sick, I don’t dare to tell him anything about this. I wanted to inform you about this but Grandpa suddenly collapsed, and you were so occupied with work, so I decided to wait a few days more before discussing it with you. Earlier, Mom called me and I told her some things. When she knew that Grandpa had fainted, she wouldn’t stop crying on the phone, blaming Dad and herself for being unfilial since they were far away and unable to take care of Grandpa when he needs them the most. Dad was also crying beside her. When I heard them sobbing, I couldn’t help…”
As she reminded of her mother’s weep, she felt a tingle in her nose and failed to continue. She then covered her face and started crying.
Seeing how she was crying so heavily that her shoulders were shaking, Mu Yu hurried over to give her a hug. “It’s okay. Don’t cry now…” As she was comforting Qin Chengxi, she helplessly stared at Qin Jinhuan.
On the other hand, Qin Jinhuan appeared emotionless, staring at his sister who was crying into Mu Yu’s shoulder. Although he seemed as if he had some ideas, he didn’t reveal anything.
“Huan, why don’t we…” After pausing for a few seconds, Mu Yu finished her sentence and said, “Why don’t we let them come back? I’m sure Grandpa misses them too.”
Although she was resistant to their return, she felt rather helpless as she had seen the yearning in their grandpa, who wanted to see his own children even though they were thorns in his heart. Moreover, she knew that the couple’s words—how they promised to change as well as bringing up the value of family—were nothing but a facade for them to take advantage of their daughter to return to An City. Based on her understanding of those two, they would stop at nothing to achieve their goals, and only God would know what they would do to the poor girl to achieve them.
Now that Qin Chengxi was clearly convinced by her parents, she would surely disregard Mu Yu’s and Qin Jinhuan’s warning. After all, blood would always be thicker than water, so it was only reasonable for the girl to long for her parents. If Qin Jinhuan still forbade her from seeing Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, she would definitely misunderstand his protectiveness over time, eventually damaging their siblinghood—something Mu Yu would hate to see.
Nonetheless, Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun had probably gone through hell after their eviction. Since they weren’t foolish people, it would be unlikely for them to take their chances if they were to return. Moreover, suspending their involvement in any activities pertaining to Qing Tian Group and having their movements supervised could easily refrain them from attempting anything sly.
After bearing that in mind, Mu Yu gently pushed Qin Chengxi aside before going to Qin Jinhuan and whispering into his ears. Although the man was initially reluctant, he eventually gave in to her request after Mu Yu’s continuous convincing and some consideration.
Upon hearing their final decision, Qin Chengxi was overjoyed and immediately went to her brother for a hug as she chuckled delightedly.
Later on, Qin Jinhuan sent his sister to her bedroom as Mu Yu went to prepare the promised pie. As she was fetching the food upstairs, she caught Qin Jinhuan staring into space outside Qin Chengxi’s room, and she called out to him softly.
Surprised by her call, Qin Jinhuan wordlessly accepted the pie and returned with Mu Yu to their room.
As he ate in silence, the sternness on his face wouldn’t fade. Mu Yu knew that he was troubled by the idea of letting Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun back into An City. Hence, she stayed by his side without making a noise.
That night, Qin Jinhuan didn’t get very good sleep. Mu Yu couldn’t fall asleep as well because of that, and they only dozed off after midnight.
It was half past nine when she woke up the next morning, and Qin Jinhuan had already gone to work. As she rubbed her eyes to read the clock clearly, she realized that the alarm had already been turned off by her man so that she could get some more rest.
Ah, lucky me.
At that moment, she noticed there was a text notification on her phone. She quickly tapped on it and realized that it was from Feng Rubing.
‘Rong Jian and I are going to Huacheng. Do leave a message if there’s anything urgent at the lab.’
After reading the text, Mu Yu instantly grew anxious.
Why are they going to Huacheng out of the blue? Did something bad happen there?
