My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 323
Chapter 323 Battered Love
“Who’s looking for me?” Rong Jian asked as he got up.
“An old lady. She specifically mentioned you by name.”
“An old lady’s looking for me?!” Rong Jian had a look of doubt on his face. He twisted his head around to tell Liu Xiaofan that he was going over to take a look before he quickly exited the forensic lab.
Once Rong Jian was gone, Liu Xiaofan and Fan Lifeng immediately became excited again. They grinned at Feng Rubing in unison and said, “We were just joking with you earlier, Mrs. Rong. Don’t take it to heart.”
Feng Rubing had been initially looking in the direction that Rong Jian had left, and her forehead was screwed up in a tight frown. Upon hearing Liu Xiaofan and Fan Lifeng say that, she immediately withdrew her gaze. There was no hint of anger on her face, but her expression was very solemn. “Officer Liu, Officer Fan, there is nothing wrong with a little ribbing between coworkers, but please do not use ‘Mrs. Rong’ as a joke in the future. I do not like jokes like that.”
Liu Xiaofan continued to chuckle nonetheless. “Why so serious, Mrs. Rong? You’re going to marry our Chief Rong any day now. It’s just a matter of time when it comes to calling you that. Am I right, lads?”
“Yeah, you certainly got that right!” Fan Lifeng wriggled cheerfully as he chimed in and continued, “We must get some practice in beforehand so that we can get used to calling you that in the future. This is a sign of our respect for you too, Mrs. Rong.”
However, their words didn’t bring Feng Rubing any joy. On the contrary, her frown deepened. “Who said I can definitely be with him?”
“What? You still haven’t agreed to marry our chief? Chief Rong has been pursuing you for five or six years now. He’s already spent all his best years on you. If you still don’t agree to it, he’s going to end up losing his confidence and seek comfort in the arms of another woman. Don’t regret it later, and don’t say that I didn’t warn you either.”
“Yep, that’s right,” Fan Lifeng added while smiling. “Dr. Feng, you better not assume that no other ladies have their eye on our chief. I’m gonna give it to you straight—there are so many girls lining up to marry him that the queue stretches all the way to his home from the station.”
It was apparent that his words had struck a nerve in Feng Rubing. She quickly hid away the lonely look peeking through her eyes and put the papers in her hands down on the table before she coldly said, “He can marry whoever he wants.”
Liu Xiaofan winked at Fan Lifeng before he continued teasing Feng Rubing, “Dr. Feng, from the look on your face, you don’t exactly seem to be honest with your words. You—”
He hadn’t managed to finish his words when Mu Yu interrupted by saying, “Madam Feng, why can’t you be together with Chief Rong? Is it because of personal reasons, or is there an issue with him?”
She noticed the shift in Feng Rubing’s expression, and she heard the latter grumbling that she couldn’t be together with Rong Jian rather than not wanting to. The more she thought about it, the weirder the situation was to her.
“Why can’t she be together with him? What do you mean by that, Dr. Mu?” Fan Lifeng interrupted, feeling confused.
Liu Xiaofan expressed his puzzlement as well. “Chief Rong’s got a banging body, and he cares so much for Doctor Feng. The problem definitely doesn’t lie with him!”
He then turned to look at Feng Rubing and solemnly asked her, “Even the sun can see for itself the sincerity of Chief Rong’s feelings for you. He has done so much for you, and he doesn’t mind your past either. Not only that, you clearly feel something for him too. So, why do you keep refusing him?”
Mu Yu then probed in a small voice, “Madam Feng, could someone be opposed to you marrying him?”
Those words immediately made the brash Liu Xiaofan leap up. “Holy f*ck! Who could be opposing them?! Just exactly who would be so n—”
“Do you guys have any other opinions about Qian Dacheng’s case?” Feng Rubing suddenly cut him off coldly.
Liu Xiaofan seemingly didn’t hear her. All of a sudden, he smacked his head hard and asked, “Hey! Is Chief Rong’s family against you two marrying, Doctor Feng?”
Feng Rubing’s expression, which was already gradually taking an unpleasant turn, instantly turned even uglier. She then flung the papers that she had picked up earlier back onto the table. “We are at work now. Can you all stop talking about things that are not related to work?”
No one thought that the typically composed Feng Rubing would get so furious. As such, everyone jumped in fright and exchanged looks with each other. However, Liu Xiaofan, who thought that he had seen the truth of the matter, smacked his thigh and exclaimed like he had a death wish, “Oh, f*ck! Chief Rong’s parents are actually against the two of you marrying?! Weren’t they constantly plotting and planning to try and push him into dating and marrying someone? Shouldn’t they be happy now that he has decided to marry? Shouldn’t they be wholeheartedly supporting him? Why are they opposed—”
“Are you going to stop? Is it so interesting to pry into someone else’s private life?” Feng Rubing interrupted as she smacked the table, the fury on her face evident. She then gave an order none-too-kindly by saying, “If you don’t want to look over the case anymore, please leave the lab at once! Go have your idle talk somewhere else!”
Although Liu Xiaofan typically joked around, he was serious when it came to work. He had cooperated with Rong Jian and solved many major cases, so coupled with his position—which was only a rank lower than Rong Jian—his teammates respected him. Even Gu Jihui had never lost his temper at him before, never mind Rong Jian. Now that Feng Rubing had yelled at him mercilessly twice, he couldn’t stop his feelings from showing on his face, and his expression became somewhat complicated.
Fan Lifeng immediately spoke up out of instinct to stand up for his friend. “Doctor Feng, please don’t take Xiaofan’s words the wrong way. He wasn’t deliberately prying into your private life. He was just concerned for you—”
“I don’t need his concern, thank you,” Feng Rubing interrupted in an icy tone.
“You—”
“Then our discussion for today ends here.” Since he was afraid that a fight would break out, Yan Zihao hastily grabbed Fan Lifeng’s sleeve to signal for him to quiet down before quickly pushing them outside.
Although Liu Xiaofan and Fan Lifeng weren’t exactly happy, they didn’t say another word out of their concern for Rong Jian. They followed Yan Zihao’s instruction and exited the forensic lab.
Feng Rubing paid no attention to their departure, and she also ignored Mu Yu while the latter continued to stare at her. Then, she lowered her head to gather the papers that had been knocked off the table.
Mu Yu rushed forward. “Madam Feng, I—”
She only wanted to say that she would help clean up the papers, but Feng Rubing thought that she wanted to ask a question that was along the lines of what Liu Xiaofan had asked earlier. Feng Rubing immediately interrupted her irritatedly and said, “Don’t even try to ask anything. I do not want to speak about it.”
After saying that, she picked up the papers and turned to walk to the testing lab behind her.
“Hey…”
Mu Yu wanted to stop her, but then she abandoned the notion. She dully put her hand back down after having lifted it, puzzlement sitting in her belly as she watched Feng Rubing disappear past the door of the lab.
Rong Jian’s roots were in An City, but in recent years, he had slowly been spending more time overseas. This was also why his family spent most of the time abroad. Occasionally, they would fly back to see him and his sister. Other than urging Rong Jian to inherit their family business, they would also urge both siblings to get married quickly. Both siblings were passionate about their jobs, and they both had strong personalities. Hence, they basically treated their parents’ words like hot air. A year ago, the siblings’ parents once again had a serious talk to them both about marriage, and the siblings deeply angered them with their responses. In a fit of fury, they didn’t come back to An City for a few months, only returning just a few days ago.
Upon thinking about the recent return of Rong Jian’s parents, Mu Yu immediately thought of the old woman who wanted to see Rong Jian as well as Liu Xiaofan’s guess. It was then that she had a faint idea of the reason behind the sudden change in Feng Rubing’s expression.
The old woman had to be Rong Jian’s mother, and the reason she was here to see her son was most likely to put pressure on him, wanting to stop him from marrying Feng Rubing.
She had met Rong Jian’s parents twice, but they only had a serious conversation once. At first, she assumed that Rong Jian’s parents would be as easy-going as Rong Ying and Rong Jian, but once she had gotten to know them, she realized that they were completely different. The first thing out of Rong Jian’s parents’ mouth was status and the value of life. Also, everything they talked about did not gel with her life. She couldn’t get a word in, but they kept asking for her opinions from time to time. Since she was unsure of how to answer, all she could do was smile wryly while staring at their seemingly friendly faces, which had an undercurrent of displeasure hiding under the facade.
She had been especially troubled then. She had only just met them, so she thought that she had no right to oppose their words. Furthermore, Mu Yu didn’t know why they disliked her so much. She had pulled Qin Jinhuan into a corner and told him all the doubts that she had kept buried inside her heart. He vaguely explained Rong Jian’s parents’ actions to her, but he quickly took her and left the Rong Residence. He had never brought her to see Rong Jian’s parents since then.
After giving it plenty of thought, Mu Yu finally came to her own conclusion—Rong Jian’s parents, who had always been entrenched in an upper class life, must not have seen her favorably after considering her ordinary family. They were worried that Qin Jinhuan would influence Rong Jian, so they gave her the cold shoulder so that their son would stay away from Qin Jinhuan, all so that he wouldn’t get any ideas from Qin Jinhuan’s views on marriage.
The current reality proved their worries right, for Rong Jian’s views on marriage matched up with Qin Jinhuan’s. They were men who would marry for love, disregarding their prospective partner’s family and past.
Right now, Mu Yu’s head was aching when it came to Rong Jian and Feng Rubing due to the former’s parents.
With parents like that, Feng Rubing would not have a pleasant life even if he insisted on having her marry into the Rong Family.
At worst, he could just choose not to live with his parents, and everyone could live their own lives then. Wouldn’t everyone be happier that way?
She was instantly cheered by this, and she immediately charged into the lab.
She initially thought that Feng Rubing was in the middle of some tests, but when she entered the lab, Mu Yu realized that the woman was not at the lab table. Instead, she was sitting on a short stool in a corner with her head lowered. Her hands were deeply entangled in her thick hair.
“Are you all right, Madam Feng?” Mu Yu approached her worriedly.
“I’m fine.” Feng Rubing immediately pretended to casually get up. “I’m a little tired, so I decided to sit down and rest.”
Mu Yu paused for a moment before she probed cautiously, “Madam Feng, have you met Chief Rong’s parents yet?”
“No.”
“I see.” It seemed that Mu Yu had given it too much thought, and Feng Rubing probably had something else on her mind.
While Mu Yu mentally ran through some guesses, Feng Rubing did not seem to mind her presence—it was probably because they were the only ones there. She sighed and finally brought up the troubles that had been plaguing her. “Rong Jian initially wanted to take me to meet them, but they weren’t willing to see me.”
“They didn’t want to see you? Why not?” Mu Yu asked, confusion written all over her face. “I thought they were hoping that he would marry and build a new family for himself as soon as possible.”
“They are hoping for him to marry, but they just don’t want him to marry me.”
Mu Yu pursed her lips. “Chief Rong loves you. Do they want him to be a bachelor his whole life if they’re opposed to his marriage with you?”
“He won’t be a bachelor.”
“Oh?” Upon sensing that there was something between the lines, she immediately asked, “Why? Why wouldn’t he be a bachelor? Don’t tell me that…”
Feng Rubing gave a pained smile as she nodded. “It’s like a plot out of a trashy romance novel. The wealthy, well-bred parents look down on Cinderella, and they arrange a new fiancee from a distinguished family for the male lead, a decision made to bring maximum benefit to them. They’ve brought the new girl back to An City. Every day, they’re urging the male lead to go home and connect with her.”
“What?!”
Although she had already mentally prepared herself for this, Mu Yu was still startled. She initially thought that their relationship would soar high once Feng Rubing accepted Rong Jian. However, she never imagined that a plot twist would suddenly pop up and kill the momentum at such a key moment.
“T-Then, what are you going to do?” she asked, somewhat at a loss for words.
“It’s not my problem now. It’s Rong Jian’s,” Feng Rubing said faintly.
“So, Chief Rong—”
“Dr. Mu!” Officer Xiao Wu suddenly showed up at the entrance of the lab. “Chief Rong has asked for you to go to his office right now. He said that he’s looking for you because something urgent came up.”
“He called for me?” Mu Yu glanced at Feng Rubing as she asked the question, thinking that Officer Xiao Wu had asked for the wrong person.
“That’s right, you! Please hurry. Chief Rong is waiting for you!”
“Okay, I’ll be there.” Mu Yu gestured for Xiao Wu to leave first. Then, she lowered her voice to speak to Feng Rubing. “Chief Rong might be looking for me to help think of a way to resolve your situation. Don’t worry, I will do all I can to help you.”
With that, she rushed over to Rong Jian’s office. Once she saw him, it was then that she realized that the urgent matter Rong Jian was talking about had something to do with their case.
