My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 321
Chapter 321 Incessant Scheming
“What happened?” questioned Qin Jinhuan.
Chao Chenyu replied, “I nearly lost control of the situation at the property owners’ meeting today. Fortunately, Miss Yin stepped in and helped me just in time. Boss, I think Miss Yin has almost recovered, and the company is currently short of hands, so can’t you consider letting her come back to work?”
Qin Jinhuan hesitated for a moment, but he didn’t agree to this suggestion. Nonetheless, the company really needed talents like Yin Anran right now. “We’ll talk about this later.”
“But—”
“The matter has been decided. I’m hanging up if there’s nothing else.”
“Wait a minute! Please listen to me, Boss!” Chao Chenyu sounded somewhat anxious. “It was Miss Yin who chaired the property owners’ meeting this time. Now, the property owners that she has persuaded trust no one else but her. If you don’t let her come back to take charge of the work, I’m afraid we’ll be unable to control the situation at that time!”
Qin Jinhuan was astounded. “Anran chaired the property owners’ meeting?!”
“Yeah! You were supposed to be the one who chaired the meeting, but you couldn’t be present because something came up at the last minute. Your absence dissatisfied the property owners since they thought we weren’t sincere at all and wouldn’t listen to my explanation. The situation was chaotic for a moment. Luckily, Miss Yin went up onstage and mollified everyone in time. Since I saw that everyone was convinced by her words, I simply let her take the initiative—”
Qin Jinhuan was somewhat annoyed. “Who allowed you to take it upon yourself to let Anran chair the meeting?”
“I-I did this for the sake of the company’s interests! Our top priority at present is to calm the property owners down and quell the ill effects of Qian Dacheng’s death, isn’t it?”
“You’re right, but you shouldn’t have gotten Anran involved in this!”
“I think Miss Yin is very good at dealing with such situations, though! She’s very quick to react and is good at solving problems by grasping the property owners’ thoughts. The property owners’ meeting couldn’t have been so successful without her today,” argued Chao Chenyu. As he spoke of this, he was quite baffled, so he plucked up his courage and asked in reply, “Boss, why don’t you let Miss Yin come back to work? Is it because you care about her or because you’re worried about her?”
Qin Jinhuan was rendered speechless for a moment. To prevent the outside world—and Qin Xiaozhi, in particular—from calling Dong Wanqing’s death in question, he had tried his best to protect Yin Anran back then, not once mentioning the conflict between Yin Anran and Mu Yu. Moreover, he deliberately made everyone pay attention to Dong Wanqing’s resentment against him, leading everyone to believe that she hurt the two women he cared about the most purely out of revenge against him. After all, he was the one she desired but whose love she couldn’t win. He even drove Yin Anran out of Qing Tian Group in such a covert manner by declaring that she wasn’t feeling well and needed a long time to recuperate. At first, he had planned to find time to come up with an excuse and send her away from An City, but she refused to agree no matter what. Furthermore, she kept a low profile and had been especially well-behaved these days. As time went on, he no longer took the matter about her seriously, and his plan to send her away slowly fell through.
Now that his subordinate had voiced his suspicions, he knew that it would be unreasonable for him to refuse to let Yin Anran come back to work at the company at this very moment, and he didn’t want the outsiders to notice his change in attitude toward her. After a short pause, he finally withdrew his previous remark, albeit reluctantly. “Anran is weak, and she was severely wounded both physically and mentally last time. Even if you let her come back to work, you mustn’t overburden her with things to do. Otherwise, she won’t be able to take it.”
“I know that.” Chao Chenyu was instantly delighted. “I won’t let her do anything else for the time being; she’ll be in charge of appeasing Xinyue Estates’ property owners, and that is all. I’ll inform her of the decision then.”
Qin Jinhuan silently hung up the phone without giving a reply. “Boss, did you really agree to let Miss Yin come back to work?” Bian Zijun looked at him with a worried expression.
There was a hint of helplessness in Qin Jinhuan’s voice. “Let her do the job first. I’ll arrange for her to leave An City a while later.”
Regardless of what Yin Anran had done to Mu Yu, Qin Jinhuan had to admit that he admired Yin Anran’s working capabilities. He was afraid that if he insisted on not employing Yin Anran at this moment, Qin Xiaozhi would soon become suspicious. Although his grandpa was now in poor health, he was very clear-headed. Qin Xiaozhi missed Qin Wentao in the first place and had felt guilty about driving his son out of An City. If he found out what role Qin Jinhuan had played in Dong Wanqing’s death, he would definitely fly into a rage and feel even more guilty toward Qin Wentao. Then, he would definitely find a way to bring Qin Wentao back to An City and shield the latter by all means possible to make up for what he owed the latter, upon which Qin Jinhuan would definitely be very frustrated.
As Qin Jinhuan walked to the side of his car, he seriously ordered Bian Zijun, “Send someone to keep a close eye on Anran’s every move. Report to me immediately if there’s anything unusual.”
Since he knew what Qin Jinhuan meant by that, Bian Zijun immediately nodded.
“Head back to the company.”
“Yes, Boss.” Bian Zijun hurriedly opened the car door for Qin Jinhuan.
Meanwhile, Mu Yu and Rong Jian went back to the municipal bureau together, and she asked him about Wu Xing’s investigation at Anxi County along the way.
“I was about to tell you about this,” Rong Jian responded to her after slowing down the car. “The head of the Household Registration Department who handled Qian Dacheng’s household registration all by himself back then died in a car accident two years ago. We found his colleagues and inquired about Qian Dacheng’s household registration. Someone said that Qian Xiaoyu had slept with this department head several times in order to ensure Qian Dacheng’s household registration was successful. This department head allegedly said so once when he got drunk, but no one could prove the veracity of his words.”
Mu Yu was astounded when she heard this. “This must be false, isn’t it? If Qian Xiaoyu really used her body as a bargaining chip, she wouldn’t have spent so much money to pull strings, right?”
Rong Jian disagreed with her, though. “The fact that Qian Xiaoyu spent money and used her own body as a bargaining chip for the sake of a person’s household registration only proves that she was well aware that Qian Dacheng’s identity was fake. She was anxious to create a new identity for him to conceal his past.”
“What is so scandalous about Qian Dacheng’s past? Why would Qian Xiaoyu not hesitate to pay such a high price to cover it up for him?”
Rong Jian shrugged his shoulders. “Qian Dacheng is already dead, so I guess only Qian Xiaoyu knows the answer to this question now. Unfortunately, she’s refusing to cooperate with us.”
“Have you sent Qian Dacheng’s photo to the Huacheng Police Department?”
“I have. They compared Qian Dacheng’s photo with the photos of others through the night and found a few people who look a bit like him. However, these people are all ordinary law-abiding citizens, and none of them knew Qian Dacheng.”
“Well, could Qian Dacheng be their distant relative?”
“They have asked these citizens about it, but they said no. According to them, they’ve never seen this person.”
“I see. In that case, did Qian Dacheng go to the local police station where his parents were back then to find his family?”
“We aren’t sure about this. Local police stations have high turnover rates, and countless police have had job transfers over the last five or six years. Even if we take the trouble to get to the bottom of this, I don’t think we’ll find any results. Qian Dacheng probably didn’t go there to look for his family, and it probably wasn’t him either.”
“Didn’t your sudden interrogation of Qian Xiaoyu last night yield any results?”
“No, it didn’t. She insisted that Qian Dacheng is her foster parents’ biological son.”
“Even if Qian Dacheng really was Qian Fenggen’s son, he was only 15 or 16 years old when he got lost. He had been missing for more than 20 years, and a person’s features and appearance could change greatly in those 20 years. On what basis could she conclude that this man was her younger brother who had gone missing for more than 20 years when no DNA testing could be done to prove it?”
“She said Qian Dacheng had a red mole on his left armpit, plus he could tell her some details of how they had spent time together in the past, so she concluded that this person was her younger brother who had been missing for more than 20 years. By the way, she even said that she and her brother could communicate via telepathy. Even though they hadn’t seen each other for more than 20 years, she felt that he was very much like a member of her family when she first saw him back then. After a short conversation with him, she was increasingly able to make that conclusion.”
Mu Yu voiced her suspicions. “Was the red mole on the left armpit the fake Qian Dacheng’s or the real Qian Dacheng’s?”
Understanding what she meant, Rong Jian smiled wryly. “Perhaps Qian Xiaoyu and Qian Dacheng himself are the only ones who know.”
“That’s not necessarily the case.” Mu Yu had her own opinion. “If we can find Qian Fenggen’s relatives or those who had been Qian Fenggen’s neighbors before Qian Dacheng’s disappearance and ask them about this characteristic of the latter’s, perhaps we’ll know everything. Alternatively, we might find something by asking them to compare Qian Dacheng’s features with those of a younger Qian Fenggen.”
Rong Jian let out a soft sigh. “We didn’t find any relatives, but Wu Xing found several former neighbors of Qian Fenggen’s family this morning.”
Mu Yu immediately asked, “What did the neighbors say?”
“They said they didn’t know whether Qian Dacheng had a red mole. They all said that Qian Dacheng had a problem with his brain since his childhood, though. Since Qian Fenggen feared that he’d be bullied, he rarely let his son go outside and forbade him to play with the children nearby when he was a child. The neighbors rarely saw Qian Dacheng, so none of them noticed whether he had a red mole on his armpit.”
“In that case, did Officer Wu show Qian Dacheng’s photo to the old neighbors and ask them whether Qian Dacheng looked like Qian Fenggen?”
“He did. They all said that this Qian Dacheng didn’t look very much like the young Qian Fenggen, but they did look a bit alike. Moreover, they were about the same height, and their hair was naturally curly, so they all believed that this Qian Dacheng was Qian Fenggen’s son.”
Mu Yu was astounded upon hearing this. She asked in disbelief, “Could Qian Dacheng really be Qian Fenggen’s son?”
Some directly-related members of a family looked so much alike that the outsiders could discern their blood relationship without the need for DNA testing. However, on the promise that no DNA testing could be done at present, the most direct way to judge whether blood ties existed between Qian Dacheng and Qian Fenggen with the naked eye was to compare their features and see how much they resembled each other. Now that Qian Fenggen’s old neighbors had said so, there was a high probability that Qian Dacheng was indeed Qian Fenggen’s biological son. If this was true, all the conjectures previously made by Mu Yu and Rong Jian would be invalidated.
“That’s hard to say, but my instinct tells me that Qian Dacheng isn’t Qian Fenggen’s son! There must be a dirty secret behind this.” Rong Jian let out a timely sigh. “I’m saying this only to you, though. After all, the police can’t solve cases by instinct.”
Instead of answering him, Mu Yu asked as if talking to herself, “How could they have no relatives? Isn’t this abnormal? Weren’t both Qian Fenggen and his wife natives of Anxi County?”
“They were both local residents of Anxi County. Qian Fenggen has a sister who has cut off contact with Qian Fenggen’s family after getting married somewhere else in the country. He also has relatives on his wife’s side, but he rarely got in touch with them in the past and totally lost contact with them after his wife’s death. Wu Xing is trying to look for them to find out about the situation,” Rong Jian said, though he apparently wasn’t very hopeful about it. “I guess that if we ask them to come forward and identify Qian Dacheng, they’ll definitely say that he looks very much like Qian Fenggen. However, I really don’t believe that this Qian Dacheng is the real Qian Dacheng.”
“If this Qian Dacheng really wasn’t the son of the Qian Family who had gone missing, then perhaps…” Mu Yu said. All of a sudden, she recalled something and immediately paused to ask, “This Qian Dacheng never had cosmetic surgery, right?”
“Cosmetic surgery?” Rong Jian was startled. “Rubing was the one who did the autopsy. I have never heard her mention it, so I suppose he never went under the knife.”
“If he never had cosmetic surgery, I don’t believe that no one knew him! I think we probably looked in the wrong direction, which is why we couldn’t find anyone who had known him five or six years ago. You still remember how Li Jianyun’s family found him, don’t you, Chief Rong?”
Rong Jian nodded to signal that he understood what Mu Yu meant. “It seems that we have to rely on the power of the internet again,” he said. Then, he stepped hard on the accelerator, wanting to get back to the municipal bureau as quickly as possible.
After returning to his office, Qin Jinhuan began dealing with the pile of documents before him. He didn’t know how long he had been busy with work when Weng Yun hurriedly pushed the door open and entered. “Boss, we have found something in our investigation of Yi Yunzhe.”
