My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 308
Chapter 308 Fooled by Delusions
“No, you’ve misunderstood me!” Rong Jian explained hastily. “I meant to say that there were a few deaths, and even Zeyu got hurt!”
“Ah, I see!” Even though it was good news, Mu Yu, who had already calmed down slightly, couldn’t relax completely as soon as he mentioned the deaths. Instead, she followed up nervously and asked, “How many deaths were there, exactly?”
“They’re still confirming the number, but the situation doesn’t look too good. Ah, Zeyu’s here! He’ll tell you the details, so I’ll be leaving to take care of some other things.” With those words, Rong Jian left in a hurry.
When Mu Yu turned her head around, Wen Zeyu was heading over in their direction, covering one side of his face with his hand. She could see smears of dark red blood on his face through the slits between his fingers.
“How’s your injury?” Qin Jinhuan asked him in a rush, having gone up ahead to check up on him.
“I’m fine. It’s just some minor cuts.” Wen Zeyu lightly glossed over the state of his injuries and turned to look at the sales office with a worried glance immediately after.
Compared to the swarm of people present earlier, there were a lot less people outside of the Xinyue Estates residential district now.
“I’m sorry for not handling the situation well, boss. It’s my fault that things have gotten this serious.” Chao Chenyu, who walked up to them with Wen Zeyu, sincerely apologized to Qin Jinhuan as he blamed himself.
“Now’s not the time to hang onto past mistakes. We need to find a way to make up for the incident so we can minimize our losses,” Wen Zeyu turned to Qin Jinhuan after saying that. “Isn’t that right, Huan?”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t reply. Instead, he returned the question with another and asked, “What on earth happened here? How did it become like this all of a sudden?”
“You should come and take a look at the sales office first.” Wen Zeyu started walking as he spoke, whereas Qin Jinhuan and Mu Yu followed behind him.
“This street was completely congested when I arrived, and the entrance of the residential area was filled with people,” Chao Chenyu said as he walked. “The crowd was a lot bigger compared to when we first launched the property. I was so shocked, but I thought the problem could be solved after some reasoning. I didn’t expect for something like that to happen at all!”
Mu Yu peered at the situation in front of them as she listened to Chao Chenyu.
The once neat and tidy residential district entrance was now even more cluttered than the venue of an outdoor cinema after a viewing session. A large group of special forces police was maintaining order relentlessly; eventually, the crowd had dispersed and the ones left behind were the injured who hadn’t had a chance to receive treatment. Some of them were sitting down while some were lying down. Their shouts and screams went on endlessly, sending chills up one’s spine as they listened. Armed police and medical officers could be seen moving around quickly, continuously sending the injured away.
Not far away from where they were standing, the glass windows and doors of the sales center were shattered to pieces; inside, tables and chairs were overturned. The place was in utter chaos, and it looked even worse than the aftermath of an earthquake—the pools of fresh blood on the floor were especially gruesome to the eye.
“When I arrived in the morning, the sales center, as well as the plaza in front of it, were filled with people; there was quite a crowd on the road too. At least tens of thousands of people were here—that’s even more than the New Year’s Eve event at the Rising Sun Plaza. I finally managed to arrive at the entrance of the sales center after squeezing through the mass, and I could hear loud noises coming from inside from a distance away. Many people were talking at once; some of them were explaining patiently while others were complaining and shouting anxiously. I could tell without listening closely that those were the property owners insisting on getting a refund on their houses. Our customer service staff were explaining why they couldn’t do that.”
“I arrived after Zeyu, so I rushed up and squeezed inside with him,” Chao Chenyu picked up from where Wen Zeyu left off. “We told them who we were as we tried to enter, hoping that they’d make us some space. Then, we explained that it wouldn’t help to keep on gathering here like this, and we also said that it was better to disperse and send us a representative so that we could have a discussion. With that, we could work something out and give them an answer. However, they didn’t want to listen and made even more noise as a result.”
Wen Zeyu said angrily, “Just as we were worried that something disastrous might happen, our concerns actually came true! Apparently, someone said that we would only agree to refund them if they caused a scene.”
Qin Jinhuan cast his eyes downward. “Was that why they started to stir up trouble?”
“Yeah!” Chao Chenyu nodded aggressively. “Zeyu and I are fine, but I heard that the customer service staff and the security guards from the sales center were heavily injured!”
Qin Jinhuan asked, “Who started it?”
To that, Chao Chenyu responded, “Whoever it was, it wasn’t us!”
“Someone was definitely pulling the strings from behind! We must catch those people, or they’ll definitely instigate more people to make things even worse! When that happens, there’s no turning back!” Wen Zeyu took a piece of tissue paper from Mu Yu. As he wiped away the blood on his face, he glared fiercely at the remaining injured people at the plaza who hadn’t been sent away by the medical officers yet. He looked at them as if they were the ones who had triggered the incident.
Meanwhile, Mu Yu stared at Wen Zeyu worriedly as she reminded him, “There’s so much blood on your face, so your wound must be deep. Why don’t you get it cleaned up at the hospital first?”
“It’s not an issue; it’s probably just a scratch.” Just then, Wen Zeyu seemed to be reminded of something. He hastily glanced at his wristwatch and his face hardened momentarily as he turned to Qin Jinhuan. “I have to go, Huan! I have an important meeting to hold at the Hui Ming Group today!”
Qin Jinhuan nodded. “You should go.”
Mu Yu yelled at the man who was about to walk away in a hurry, “Hey! You need to take care of your wound first!”
“No worries, Yu. I’ll put a band-aid on it later.”
“Your wound seems like a long one—a band-aid won’t do!”
“It’s fine. I’ll put it horizontally and even put on a few more if that doesn’t work. All right, I’ll get going. I’ll talk to you if there’s anything else.” Wen Zeyu’s voice was rapidly getting further away as he spoke, and he was already long gone by the time he finished speaking.
“Hey! Stop hanging around here. Move along!” An armed police officer shouted and waved his hands toward Qin Jinhuan and the others, trying to stop them from entering the sales center.
A chief police officer who recognized Qin Jinhuan immediately scolded the police officer, “Who do you think you’re shouting at? They’re the CEO and vice president of the Qing Tian Group!”
“Huh?!” The police officer didn’t dare to say anything more and quickly scurried away to maintain order somewhere else.
On the other hand, the chief police officer came up at once to apologize. He said, “He’s new and inexperienced, so please excuse him, President Qin and President Chao.”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t respond to the man. Instead, he looked around and started walking briskly toward Gu Jihui and Rong Jian when he noticed them standing by the side. Chao Chenyu didn’t follow behind this time; he took out his phone and went in another direction, preparing to give the manager of the sales office a ring to gain a thorough understanding of the situation.
Mu Yu was about to follow behind Qin Jinhuan when she saw the chief police officer still rooted on the spot with panic written all over his face. She promptly reassured him and said, “It’s fine, so just carry on with your work.”
“How’s the situation so far?” Qin Jinhuan’s brows were knitted into a straight line as his eyes shifted toward the three corpses lying nearby. Beside them, family members were bawling their eyes out in agony, and angry curses directed toward the Qing Tian Group could be heard amidst their bitter cries.
“Family members are bound to be sad after the death of a loved one, and it’s normal for them to berate anyone with no filter. You don’t have to take it personally, President Qin.” Gu Jihui was afraid that the families of the deceased would recognize Qin Jinhuan, so he slowly guided his boss somewhere further as he spoke in consolation. Only then did he reply to his question from earlier by saying, “So far, we have three deaths and more than 10 who were heavily injured—they’re receiving emergency treatment at the hospital as we speak. There are even more who have been lightly injured, but we don’t have to worry about them. I’m just hoping that the hospital doesn’t give us any more bad news.”
“There’s nothing much going on here for now, Director Gu. I’ve already arranged for the dead bodies to be sent to the mortuary for now, and their families have been asked to give a statement. I’ll head over to the hospital to have a look. That way, I can also get to know what exactly went down at the site of the incident earlier,” Rong Jian interrupted as he waved goodbye to Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan. “I’ll talk to you guys in a while.”
“I’ll get going too; I need to report on my work.” Gu Jihui also left after saying those words.
With that, Qin Jinhuan stood on the spot and eyed the area with tightly pursed lips.
Mu Yu stomped her foot in frustration. “Aren’t these people too stupid for wanting to get a refund on their property just because Qian Dacheng was found dead in Xinyue Estates? Zhao Yongli died in the Qing Tian Building, but aren’t the workers there still alive and well? Li Jianyun also died at Qing Tian Shopping Mall, and the mall’s already back in full operation. Aren’t the shopkeepers and visiting customers living just fine as well?”
“They’ve been fooled by someone else.”
“At the end of the day, aren’t they just no-brainers?” Mu Yu was getting more agitated as she spoke. “How could they be so easily fooled?”
Qin Jinhuan didn’t answer anymore, and he simply strolled deeper into Xinyue Estates.
“Do you think it’s still safe to stay in the houses here?”
“Of course not! There were already more than a hundred deaths in the sales office just earlier. Word has it that a few hundred property owners have to be killed before this residential district will know peace!”
Such a conversation piqued the couple’s interest as they moved along, and they instinctively turned toward the direction of the voices. It appeared that the voices belonged to two middle-aged cleaning ladies around the age of 50 who worked in the residential district. Mu Yu tugged at Qin Jinhuan’s arm, and the two acted like they were taking a casual stroll by slowing down their pace.
The two women were immersed in their exchange and didn’t notice the couple’s faces. The skinny woman who had asked the question earlier exclaimed in panic as soon as she heard the plump woman’s answer. “Oh my goodness! What should I do? My son and daughter have already secured a house here! They’ve already told their landlord that they’d be moving out by the end of June—they were planning to move in here during the summer holidays! What do I do now?!”
“What can you do? You’ll have to ask for a refund and get another house somewhere else with the money!” The plump cleaning lady replied matter-of-factly as she patted the dust off her pants.
“We bought this house to make it more convenient for their kids to travel to school. Where are we going to find such a good place near An City 3 Primary School if we let go of this house now?”
“Springtime Woods is also located near An City 3 Primary School. In fact, it’s pretty near Xinyue Estates, and it’s a lot cheaper too. I heard that the layout of the houses there is even better than the ones in Xinyue; a lot of Xinyue’s property owners have already handed in their deposits there yesterday afternoon, and they’re planning to pay up as soon as their refund here gets approved. You probably won’t be able to get a spot there if you’re late.”
“How’s that possible?” The skinny cleaning lady looked doubtful. “Weren’t the houses in Springtime Woods selling awfully slow?”
“That was because everyone assumed the buyers at Xinyue Estates didn’t believe in superstition! To be honest, geomancers have already said that bad omens surround Xinyue Estates, whereas Springtime Woods is the opposite. They didn’t believe any of it, though. Sure enough, only the truth can teach them a lesson!”
The skinny woman expressed her doubt once again and said, “Why do you say that bad omens surround Xinyue Estates?”
“Take a look at the southern gate of this place—isn’t it a little crooked? The road in front of it is also crooked… How could this be a place that attracts good omen when even the gates and roads are crooked? On the other hand, the front doors of the houses in Springtime Woods face the north—anyone who moves there will flourish in life for sure.”
“Ah, is that so?” The skinny woman stood up immediately and started taking off her uniform. “In that case, I’ll have to take the day off and go home to tell my son and daughter about this!”
“Why are you even taking the day off? From what I see, you should just quit your job. Don’t you know the recent murder cases all involved the Qing Tian Group’s employees? Rumor has it that the killer is out for more—the next victim could be you! To be honest with you, I’ve already quit; the only reason I’m still here is because my pay isn’t out yet. I’ll be gone once I get my salary! It’s not like our jobs are exceptionally decent. I mean, who wouldn’t hire a cleaning lady? Staying alive is more important!”
The skinny woman was stunned momentarily, for the plump woman seemed to make sense. After pondering her words for a few seconds, she nodded and hastily made her way to the management center. The plump woman promptly left and proceeded to make small talk with another cleaning lady nearby.
Mu Yu was boiling with anger at the sight of that. She wanted to rush up to the woman, but Qin Jinhuan stopped her. “She’s only one of them; you’ll only cause a false alarm if you expose her now.”
Mu Yu was both troubled and anxious. “In that case, are we supposed to sit and wait while it happens?”
“No, we…”
At that moment, Qin Jinhuan’s phone rang. He immediately picked up when he noticed it was Bian Zijun.
“Where are you, boss? I’ve gained a basic understanding of the situation.”
“I’m at Xinyue Estates.”
“I’m right outside!”
Qin Jinhuan looked around before telling Bian Zijun to wait for him at the sales office. Then, he grabbed Mu Yu’s hand and left in a hurry.
