My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 291
Chapter 291 Death Above All Else
“Speak.”
“Miss Yin was the mastermind behind this entire incident, so why are you being so lenient toward her even after everything? Even though she did save the young mistress today, she wouldn’t have been in such a situation at all if Miss Yin hadn’t done any of this!” When he realized that he was a little too agitated with his speech, Bian Zijun quickly explained himself and said, “I’m just worried that she’ll have other plans to hurt the young mistress in the future.”
Qin Jinhuan’s eyes sharpened at the sound of that. “I’ll make sure she dies on the spot if she dares touch a strand of hair on Yu’s head!”
“I’ll get someone to keep an eye on her!”
“Good.” Then, Qin Jinhuan paused after that. When the frown between his brows finally loosened up a little, he asked again, “What do you think Yu would do if she finds out that this was all Yin Anran’s doing?”
Bian Zijun jolted momentarily and sank into deep thought before answering him carefully, “The young mistress has always been skeptical about your relationship with Miss Yin, so if she finds out about the truth behind this incident, she wouldn’t believe what you did was for Miss Xi; instead, she’d assume that it was for Miss Yin. Although the young mistress had never been fond of Dong Wanqing, considering her kind nature, she’d still blame you for your cruelty against that woman. Um, I didn’t mean to say that you’re cruel, Boss… This is just my reasoning according to my understanding of the young mistress’ character. Of course, it’s merely my personal opinion, so perhaps the young mistress wouldn’t think of it this way. Perhaps…”
“Indeed, I was the one who had forced Dong Wanqing to her death.” Surprisingly, Qin Jinhuan didn’t take offense at all. He lowered his voice as he took over from where Bian Zijun had left off. “If Yu finds out about the truth, she’d first resent me for defending Anran. Secondly, she’ll be furious at me for using Dong Wanqing as a pawn. I might be able to prove her wrong through actions regarding the former, but I can’t do anything about the latter. Whatever it is, it’ll affect my image and place in her heart. Besides, the old man would eventually know about the truth if Yu knows about it. Once he realizes that Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun had nothing to do with the incident, he’ll summon them home out of guilt and try to pay them back endlessly. From what I know, Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun would definitely take the opportunity to make outrageous demands—they’ll even make Xi do various things she doesn’t want to do as well. If that happens, wouldn’t all my hard work in plotting against them go down the drain? That’s why with all things considered, Yu can never know the truth. Since she has a habit of repaying someone else’s kindness toward her, she’ll express her gratitude toward Anran for saving her life. If I make Anran leave town right away when she’s still heavily injured with scars on her face, Yu would be suspicious for sure. Yu knows that Anran is an orphan with no family members to rely on besides me. Furthermore, she believes that I treat Anran well, so I can’t possibly send that woman away at a time like this. Hence, to prevent any unnecessary misunderstandings, not only must we leave Anran be, we must also take good care of her in the meantime.”
“Did you say that we have to take good care of her? What if the young mistress takes it the wrong way again, though…”
“I’ll be sure to keep my distance.”
With that, Bian Zijun finally relaxed.
“Make sure everything goes well with Dong Wanqing’s funeral.”
“I will.” Just then, Bian Zijun noticed the sense of regret in Qin Jinhuan’s eyes and quickly gave him some words of comfort. “Dong Wanqing’s death was an accident, boss. It’s not our fault, and we can only blame it on her weak mind. To be honest, I really didn’t think a woman as timid as her would do something so extreme.”
In their original plan, Dong Wanqing was simply a tool to deal with Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun—Qin Jinhuan and Bian Zijun wanted to use her to drive the couple out of An City. After achieving their goal, they were planning to find a way to lighten Dong Wanqing’s sentence once the storm had died down. Along with that, they’d also do everything they could to make it up to her after she was released.
Meanwhile, Qin Jinhuan did not respond to Bian Zijun’s remark; he simply stared blankly at Mu Yu’s ward through the glass panel. Due to the urgency of their topic of conversation, they had moved from outside of Mu Yu’s ward to the ward opposite hers—it was a room that Rong Ying had arranged for Qin Jinhuan’s people to take a rest in.
A sigh escaped Bian Zijun’s lips as he said, “Most importantly, I didn’t expect her to muster up all that courage to jump from so high up—it was the total opposite compared to her usual weak and fragile personality.”
Something didn’t sound right in Qin Jinhuan’s ears. He immediately questioned Bian Zijun and asked, “Did you say that she jumped on her own will? Didn’t Anran push her down?”
“Yes, Miss Yin did push her down from the rooftop, but she was caught by Officer Liu on the 35th floor. She could have totally survived from then on, but she unhesitatingly rejected Officer Liu’s helping hand and chose death instead.”
Since the incident took place on the tallest building of the residential area, the police weren’t able to arrange a sniper in a neighboring building. To prevent Dong Wanqing from hurting Mu Yu, Bian Zijun rushed over to the unit on the 35th floor that was facing the east after much consideration. He risked his life and climbed up to the rooftop following the pipeline, fully prepared to restrain Dong Wanqing when she was off guard. On the other hand, Cheng Xiang and Weng Yun made other preparations with the help of their team—they attached harnesses onto their waists and put on a set of protective garments as they lay in wait on the balcony glass windows of the 35th, 34th, and 33rd floors. After taking into account where Dong Wanqing was standing, she would’ve definitely passed the balconies if she were to fall from the rooftop deck. The plan was to take a huge leap and catch the person once they noticed someone falling from above. Even though it was a dangerous feat, they didn’t have any control over the situation at the moment. In addition to that, time was running out, so they could only go with that plan. Liu Xiaofan, Fan Lifeng, and the others thought that it was a feasible plan of action as well, so they immediately decided to take part in it.
When it really happened, Dong Wanqing didn’t jump down the rooftop; instead, she had fallen down at a location quite close to the guardrail. As such, it was a lot easier for the rescuers to save her—Liu Xiaofan, who had been waiting on the 35th floor, was sharp to notice her tumbling figure. He rushed out at once and grabbed Dong Wanqing, happily thinking that it was Mu Yu at first. Even though he was a little disappointed to realize that it was Dong Wanqing instead, he did his best to get her to safety up above. However, the woman refused to cooperate at all—out of all things, she even tried to escape from his hold. Liu Xiaofan assumed that she simply picked death above all else due to the fear that Qin Jinhuan and the others would have malicious intentions to seek revenge from her. Thus, he promised her that the police would guarantee her safety no matter what. In return, she simply gave him a feeble smile and thanked him sincerely before biting down hard on his shoulder. As a result, his grip loosened instinctively from the pain, and he could only watch helplessly as she fell toward the ground.
Without a doubt, Dong Wanqing had already accepted her death the moment she chose to walk this path, but Qin Jinhuan didn’t think that she would be so adamant about it. After hearing Bian Zijun’s words, the man was utterly shocked, and even his face started to pale.
Even though he had always despised Dong Wanqing, he never intended to take her life—after all, she had never done anything to harm him. She had always been timid and obedient in front of him, but Qin Jinhuan never looked her in the eye, smiled at her, or even spoke kindly to her.
She was simple-minded and weak; she wasn’t evil in nature, but she didn’t have an independent mind either. After losing her parents at a young age, she saw Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun as her own parents—she was most faithful to their words. Nonetheless, her narcissistic, greedy, and arrogant attitude were simply her aunt’s character which she had adopted over time.
Needless to say, she had only become acquainted with Qin Jinhuan due to her aunt’s deliberate arrangement; the older woman wanted to use their budding relationship to resolve Qin Jinhuan’s conflict with Qin Wentao. That way, Dong Yueyun could then fulfill her motive of getting along better with the Qin Family. Dong Wanqing had also hoped to become the young mistress of the Qin Family when she first approached Qin Jinhuan, but after years of perseverance, her feelings for him had long since changed in nature. In the end, she still saw him as someone she admired and respected in her heart, so that was why she always appeared inferior and scared in front of him.
In truth, Qin Jinhuan knew about all of that.
If only Dong Wanqing weren’t Dong Yueyun’s niece, things would’ve been different—if she hadn’t been the girl who followed behind her aunt at all times and heeded her every word, perhaps their relationship wouldn’t have been as bad as it was.
Qin Jinhuan hated Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun to the core, so much that he couldn’t help but hate those around them as well—in fact, Qin Chengxi used to be one of those people. However, he eventually came to realize that she was just a poor child; she was different compared to her parents. From then on, his hate for her slowly evolved into sympathy and affection. He took pity on Qin Chengxi even more after finding out that Dong Yueyun and Qin Wentao had exhausted her both physically and mentally all for their own benefit. Along with that, his hatred for the couple along with Dong Wanqing escalated even more. To him, Dong Yueyun and Qin Wentao were the culprits, whereas Dong Wanqing was their accomplice.
Ever since Qin Jinhuan’s mother passed away, he tirelessly thought of a way to get rid of Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, but he’d never wanted to kill Dong Wanqing.
However, the woman eventually died in his hands.
Although she was indeed in the wrong for holding a hostage, her death was technically a wrongful one since it was all just part of Qin Jinhuan’s miscalculation.
For that, he fully understood her behavior of choosing death over Liu Xiaofan’s help.
Back when his mother died while he was still a little boy, he was down in the dumps. He had cried himself unconscious several times as he held her cold and lifeless hand, especially when his mother was about to be placed into her coffin. In fact, he wouldn’t let them close the cover no matter what, and he even tried to climb into it so that he could die alongside his mother. After being forcefully pulled away by his grandfather, he sobbed violently and rolled on the ground. His mother had just died, and he felt as though his world had come to an end—there was no point in living anymore.
Dong Wanqing had been around Dong Yueyun from a young age, so she’d long since taken the woman as her own mother. However, since they weren’t truly blood relatives, in addition Dong Wanqing’s longing for a mother’s love, her attachment to Dong Yueyun was far deeper than that of an ordinary daughter’s. Thus, when Dong Yueyun had abandoned her to save herself, Dong Wanqing was utterly dejected—her love eventually turned into hatred. Nevertheless, she had done all those hateful things solely in hopes of exchanging it for their attention, for she hoped that they could find themselves a decent excuse. Unfortunately, not only did she fail to see their return, she found out that they had left An City altogether. That gave her a devastating blow and she felt like she’d been heartlessly abandoned. In other words, Dong Wanqing was completely crushed and fell into total despair. In the heat of the moment, life was meaningless to her; under the extreme pressure, she made a series of unpredictable and horrifying choices.
Oftentimes, crazy decisions were made within a moment’s notice—the flip of a switch could easily turn heaven into hell.
“Are you okay, boss?” Bian Zijun respectfully and warily supported Qin Jinhuan by the arm, for the latter’s forehead was beaded with sweat.
Qin Jinhuan gently pushed him away and sat down slowly before he waved a hand at him weakly. “You can leave now. I’d like some time alone.”
“I’ll pour you a glass of warm water.”
“Get out!”
“All right.” Even though he was extremely worried, Bian Zijun didn’t dare to insist and left the room in anxiety.
After pacing around outside for some time, he still couldn’t relax. However, he didn’t want to bother Mu Yu either. After giving it some thought, he decided to get Rong Ying here so that she could have a chat with Qin Jinhuan.
With that in mind, he turned around immediately. At that moment, someone he didn’t wish to see was walking toward him. He became nervous all of a sudden and came to a halt in panic.
