My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 285
Chapter 285 The Crazy Woman
“What happened?” asked both Mu Yu and Feng Rubing in surprise.
“Hurry up and put her under surveillance! I’ll be back right away!” Rong Jian said before hanging up the phone. Then, he said to Feng Rubing, “Just stay here first. I’ll have someone pick you up later.” With that, he hurriedly left the ward.
“What’s happened… Hey!” Mu Yu and Feng Rubing looked at each other as they were the only ones left in the ward. After a long time, Mu Yu finally asked the latter, “What on earth happened?”
Feng Rubing shook her head in puzzlement before a trace of panic appeared in her eyes. “Could it be that our guesses have come true?”
Mu Yu also had some guesses of her own, but she still seemed to be in disbelief. “No way! How could it happen so soon?!”
Feng Rubing let out a sigh. “I wonder who died this time.”
“No, that mustn’t be the case! How could it be a murder when both of us aren’t going as coroners? There must be something else.”
Feng Rubing was startled for a moment as she thought that Mu Yu’s words made sense. She then suggested, “Perhaps the bureau asked Yunkang to go instead.”
Mu Yu glanced at Feng Rubing’s leg before glancing around her own ward. When she thought that such a possibility was very likely, she was disheartened for a moment, and she pounded her bed angrily. Feng Rubing hadn’t recovered from her leg injury and had great difficulty moving about, so Rong Jian would definitely not allow her to visit the crime scene. As for Mu Yu, she was still confined to bed… Even if she wanted to go over, Qin Jinhuan and Qin Xiaozhi would surely be against it. After all, she needed quite some time to make a full recovery.
She suddenly became angry with Dong Wanqing, for the latter was the culprit who rendered her into such a state. No, Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun seem to be the actual culprits for now, she thought to herself. Suddenly, she felt that they had gotten off too easily by leaving An City to somewhere else and living a happy, unrestrained life with such a large sum of money. Wait a minute, that’s not right! If they’re the real culprits, why didn’t the police hold them accountable? Could it be that…
Mu Yu became suspicious. After thinking for a while, she then asked Feng Rubing, “Madam Feng, have you heard anything about my car accident?” When the woman nodded, she immediately continued, “Is Dong Wanqing really the one behind it?”
“Dong Wanqing didn’t admit it herself, but judging from the evidence that is currently available, that should be the case.”
“Does it mean that she has been convicted?”
“We’re almost there. She just needs to explain the diamond ring’s whereabouts.”
“I see. Madam Feng, do you know that Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun have left An City?”
“They’ve left An City? Where did they go?”
“They’re gone,” Mu Yu equivocated. Only then did she realize that it seemed unfeeling of Qin Xiaozhi to sever ties with Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun and chase them out of An City, but he actually did this out of eagerness to protect his son. Qin Xiaozhi must have noticed or found out that they were related to her car accident, or else he wouldn’t have been so resolute. She also had 10,000 reasons to believe that Qin Xiaozhi secretly had everything arranged for them. As such, they would have absolutely nothing to do with her car accident as Dong Wanqing would take all the blame.
She suddenly felt sorry for Dong Wanqing, the scapegoat who was about to be imprisoned. At the same time, she sighed with regret for the trouble Qin Xiaozhi had gone through. Qin Wentao broke his father’s heart over and over again, yet the latter stood up for him repeatedly in the end despite the resolute words he said time and time again. Qin Chengxi used to be so obedient and filial to Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, yet they were willing to use her life to threaten someone else in exchange for the benefits they wanted. Both Qin Xiaozhi and Qin Wentao were fathers with the same blood flowing in their veins, yet their manners toward their own children were poles apart.
She suddenly recalled what Qin Xiaozhi had once said to her—he believed it was because of his pampering and overindulgence toward Qin Wentao that the latter became so selfish and narrow-minded. Therefore, he chose to clear his son’s current mess to make up for the consequences of his failure to discipline the latter. No matter what, this was the responsibility he ought to take for his child. Qin Xiaozhi even blamed himself for Qin Jinhuan’s childhood loss of his mother, his rebellious behavior, and Qin Chengxi’s painful experience. At that time, she only sensed Qin Xiaozhi’s helplessness as he told her about it, but she realized now that he wasn’t feeling that way at all. Instead, he was distressed. He was extremely unwilling to reconcile himself to this, yet he couldn’t turn things around.
“Does their departure from An City during such a time indicate that they might have something to do with your car accident?”
“Huh? What did you say?” Mu Yu’s thoughts had been interrupted by Feng Rubing’s words. Even though she heard the latter’s question clearly, she put on a confused look to sound out just how much Feng Rubing knew. In other words, she wanted to know how much Rong Jian knew about everything.
“They probably have nothing to do with it. I was just asking.” Feng Rubing smiled. In reality, she was trying to sound Mu Yu out as well.
Mu Yu asked in reply, “Do you think they have something to do with it?”
“Judging from the evidence that’s currently available, they have nothing to do with your car accident. The police certainly wouldn’t have let them leave An City if they did.”
Feng Rubing’s watertight answer left Mu Yu speechless. For a moment, none of them spoke again, and the ward instantly felt suffocating. After a long time, Mu Yu finally broke the silence. “I wonder what made Chief Rong so nervous.”
On the other hand, Feng Rubing was calm at this moment. “We’ll probably know very soon.”
As soon as she finished her sentence, Mu Yu’s cell phone rang. Seeing that it was a phone call from Yin Anran, Mu Yu was very surprised. She immediately began guessing what the woman wanted to say to her on the phone.
When Feng Rubing saw Mu Yu not answering her phone for a long time, she thought that her presence had inconvenienced the latter. Since she knew how to behave during sensitive situations, she got up with some difficulty and said, “I’m going to the restroom.”
“No, it’s all right. Just stay in your seat, Madam Feng. It won’t be a problem.” When she realized the meaning behind Feng Rubing’s expression, Mu Yu waved her hand while quickly answering the phone. “Hello?” she said impassively.
“Mu Yu?” A woman’s low voice came from the other end of the line.
“Yes. Why are you calling me?” The woman’s voice sounded familiar. Since Mu Yu had been blinded by her inertial thinking, she questioned the woman in a cold and unfriendly voice without thinking.
“I’m not Yin Anran.”
“I’ll be hanging up if you’re not Yin Anran.”
“I’m Dong Wanqing.” The person quickly revealed who she was before Mu Yu hung up the phone.
“Dong Wanqing?!” Mu Yu was astounded. “How did you get out of the detention center?!”
Dong Wanqing sneered on the other end of the line. “Are you disappointed now that I’ve gotten out of that place?”
Upon hearing Mu Yu’s words, Feng Rubing immediately beckoned to her and mouthed, “She can’t possibly get out.”
Meanwhile, Mu Yu understood what Feng Rubing meant and immediately asked Dong Wanqing in reply, “Whether you’ve gotten out or not has nothing to do with me. Just spit it out—why are you calling me?”
“To meet an old friend, of course. I’ll be waiting for you in the second unit of Splendor Residency’s Block 18. Be sure to be there.”
“Sorry, but I’m not free right now. Goodbye.”
“Yin Anran is in my hands.”
Mu Yu, who was pretending to hang up the phone, became shocked when she heard this. She immediately asked in reply, “What do you mean by that?”
“I mean it literally. I believe you have understood what I meant by that, Doctor Mu.”
When Mu Yu associated this with Rong Jian’s previous response at this moment, she immediately realized that Dong Wanqing must have seized an opportunity to escape from the detention center before kidnapping Yin Anran.
“You’re a coroner, Mu Yu—that makes you a member of the public security system. As a police officer, how could you watch the hostage die at the hands of a criminal? Haven’t you always been a very qualified coroner? Does your so-called qualification exist in name only? Did you get into the public security system by sleeping with someone else?” Dong Wanqing said before laughing in a shrill voice that revealed her sarcasm and contempt for Mu Yu.
However, the woman wasn’t easily angered as she didn’t know what Dong Wanqing intended to do. Instead, she questioned nervously, “What the hell are you trying to do by holding Yin Anran hostage?”
“Nothing in particular. I said that I wanted to see you, didn’t I? Aren’t we old friends? Hurry up and come over. I brewed some coffee at Anran’s place, and I’m waiting for you.”
By now, Feng Rubing had carefully moved to Mu Yu’s side and was listening to the phone conversation with her ear pressed against the latter’s cell phone. Upon hearing Dong Wanqing’s words, she immediately shook her head and signaled Mu Yu not to go.
Naturally, Mu Yu was aware of how dangerous it was to do so, so she didn’t give an answer.
“What is it? Are you too scared to come? Are you afraid that I’ll eat you alive? Tsk, you’re a member of the public security system, though. Not only are you skilled in martial arts, you can even use a scalpel very well. Why are you afraid of a weak and powerless woman like me now? Aren’t you going to make those in your profession lose face?” Dong Wanqing taunted. When Mu Yu still did not reply, she stopped forcing the woman and laughed nonchalantly instead. “It’s okay if you don’t come. In that case, I’ll stab Yin Anran to death right now and see if you still have the cheek to call yourself a coroner who gives justice back to those who deserve it. Goodbye.”
“Hey! Wait!” Mu Yu anxiously stopped her. “Is Yin Anran really in your hands?”
“Why would I lie to you about this? If you don’t believe me, I’ll make a video call to you right now. Hang on.” At once, the call disconnected. Soon after that, Dong Wanqing made a video call to Mu Yu instead.
Mu Yu looked at Feng Rubing nervously. When she understood what Mu Yu meant, the latter moved her body sideways and texted Rong Jian in secret.
Just as Mu Yu had expected, she saw Yin Anran as soon as the video call went through. Not only were her hands and feet tied up, even her mouth was sealed with tape. As she looked at the camera in horror with big and tearful eyes, she desperately nodded and shook her head at Mu Yu while uttering, “Mmmm…” anxiously. Obviously, she was asking Mu Yu for help.
“Did you see that? I’m not lying to you, am I?” The camera turned around to reveal Dong Wanqing’s fiendish smile. Soon after that, the camera was turned toward Yin Anran’s face again. This time, there was a sharp fruit knife held to the woman’s face, and Dong Wanqing’s shrill laughter could be heard at the same time. “Are you coming, Mu Yu? If you aren’t coming, I will…” Dong Wanqing said while exerting some strength on the knife in her hand. In an instant, a blackish-red streak appeared on Yin Anran’s snow-white face, and her whole body shook. Tears streamed down her face as pain and panic crept into her eyes.
“Stop!” When she knew that Dong Wanqing wasn’t kidding, Mu Yu quickly straightened up her body and stopped the woman. As soon as she finished her sentence, the bloodstained knife rubbed against Yin Anran’s face twice before it disappeared from the camera. At the same time, the camera turned toward a small round table with three exquisitely made coffee cups and a pot of steaming coffee on it.
“Come over and reminisce about the past while the coffee is still hot. The coffee won’t taste good once it cools down, and it’ll affect my mood. If I’m in a bad mood, Yin Anran will die.”
“Don’t do anything reckless! I’ll be there right away.”
“Great! Hurry up, though. I’ve never had the patience to wait for anyone,” Dong Wanqing said before hanging up the phone.
“Wait!” Feng Rubing grabbed Mu Yu as she was about to get out of bed. “Let’s listen to what Rong Jian says!” She dialed the man’s number as she spoke, and his anxious voice could be heard immediately. “Dong Wanqing attacked the police and fled half an hour ago, and we just learned that she’s taken Yin Anran hostage. She’s very emotional right now and very likely to do something crazy, so you mustn’t go just because she’s asked you to, Yu!”
Mu Yu asked in reply, “In that case, should we watch her kill Yin Anran instead?”
“Well… There will be a solution. No matter what, you must not come here. Our police department can’t bear the responsibility if anything bad happens to you!”
Mu Yu had a determined look in her eyes as she knew this was what Rong Jian worried about. “The person Dong Wanqing is taking hostage is someone I hate very much. Still, Yin Anran is only an ordinary citizen to me at this very moment. I’m a member of the public security system, so shouldn’t we always stand on the front line in times of danger as members of the public security system?” When she realized that her words sounded rather scary, she immediately softened her voice and said, “Besides, won’t you guys be there? All of you will definitely find a way to protect me, right? Just hurry up and have her under surveillance. I’ll be at the scene right away.”
As soon as she finished her sentence, Mu Yu put on her shoes, donned her overcoat, and walked outside, whereas the nervous Feng Rubing immediately hobbled after her while holding her cell phone tightly.
