Chapter 281 The Nervous Chief of the Crime Unit
“What’s the urgent matter?” Mu Yu asked while picking up the cell phone.
“He didn’t say.”
Mu Yu instantly stopped looking at Qin Jinhuan. Then, she pricked up her ears and listened to the receiver while asking softly, “Are you asking for me, Chief Rong?”
“Help me, Yu.” Rong Jian’s voice sounded somewhat hoarse and fretful, causing Mu Yu’s heart to clench at once. She asked, “Did something happen again?”
“No, no, no, it’s not a public matter. It’s my personal matter. Rubing is giving me the cold shoulder.”
“I see.” Only then was Mu Yu relieved a little. “Did you come to the hospital to see Madam Feng?”
“No, I didn’t. Wasn’t I drunk? I slept like a log, and I wouldn’t have known when I would wake up had Xiaofan not come over and looked for me. When I got up, I saw a few missed calls from Rubing on my cell phone; I called her back, but she didn’t answer any of my calls. Since I was worried, I called Ying and asked her to go over and take a look. Ying told me Rubing had gone to the villa and picked Qiqi up over 10 minutes ago, saying that she was heading back home. Hence, I went straight to her house and waited for her. At first, I wanted to explain to her why I didn’t pick her up from the hospital this morning, but I didn’t expect her to act like she’d seen an enemy when she saw me. She slammed the door right in my face without even giving me a chance to explain myself, nor did she allow Qiqi to open the door. She must be angry at me for not picking her up from the hospital this morning. Yu, I think it’s better to solve a problem promptly when it occurs, but Rubing refuses to listen to what I want to say. I don’t know what to do, so here I am calling you right now. There’s been slight improvement in our relationship, but then such a thing happened. I’m such an idiot!” Rong Jian explained before letting out a deep sigh while sounding terribly upset.
“In that case, are you still at the door of Madam Feng’s home?”
“No, I’m not. I’m calling you from the small garden downstairs of her apartment.”
“I see.” Mu Yu thought for a moment. She then replied, “Do you know how anxious Madam Feng was when she couldn’t reach you on the phone today, Chief Rong? She even called Director Gu and Officer Liu to ask them about your situation. If she didn’t have any difficulty walking, she would’ve gone out and searched for you long ago.”
“It’s my fault—I shouldn’t have been so fond of drinking. I really deserve this.” Rong Jian blamed himself and was regretful.
“It’s useless to say this right now. Do you know the actual reason why Madam Feng is giving you the cold shoulder, Chief Rong?”
“The actual reason?” Rong Jian was surprised. “Is it because I didn’t pick her up from the hospital?” he asked. He then continued tentatively, “Did I make her worried because she couldn’t reach me for a long time?”
Mu Yu couldn’t help but laugh when she heard the vague hint of delight in his last sentence. However, she suddenly realized that it was inappropriate for her to do so, so she hurriedly suppressed her laugh and said in a serious tone, “Madam Feng seems to have misunderstood you, Chief Rong.”
“What has she misunderstood about me?!”
“This is just my guess, though. I can’t be certain if Madam Feng really thinks this way.”
“Hurry up and say it.” Rong Jian sounded very impatient.
“Madam Feng appeared to be very worried about you when she came to my ward and asked about your condition today. However, her expression changed at once when she learned that you weren’t picking her calls up because you got drunk last night. I guess she probably—”
“Probably what?”
“She probably thought you had changed your mind and was taking solace in alcohol.”
Rong Jian became increasingly impatient. “Took my solace in alcohol? Changed my mind? I don’t understand what you mean, Yu. Can you stop beating around the bush?”
Mu Yu hesitated since she was uncertain of what Feng Rubing actually thought, but Qin Jinhuan, who had heard their conversation clearly, took the cell phone and spoke on her behalf. “Feng Rubing thought you drank yourself silly because you disliked her. Things will be okay between you two once you explain this matter to her.”
Rong Jian was incredibly shocked. “Me, disliking her?! How is that possible?! It’s never too late for me to love her!”
“It’s useless for you to tell us this, so just talk to Feng Rubing instead. All right, We’re hanging up right now. Yu’s going to eat.”
“Don’t hang up yet! Don’t—” Rong Jian said, but Qin Jinhuan had already hung up the phone before he could even finish his sentence. Mu Yu, who had her ear pressed to the cell phone, was somewhat annoyed when she witnessed this. She snatched the cell phone and chided Qin Jinhuan by saying, “Wasn’t it too impolite of you to hang up the phone before Chief Rong even finished his sentence?”
Meanwhile, the man quickly put his cell phone back into his pocket and casually pointed at something. “Aren’t you hungry? Your meal is here.”
At that moment, Mu Yu finally noticed that Weng Yun had come in with a bag in tow. To be frank, Mu Yu previously claimed that she was hungry only because she wanted to send Qin Jinhuan away. In reality, she wasn’t famished and was totally uninterested in the food Weng Yun had brought to the ward right now. She reached inside Qin Jinhuan’s pocket to grab his cell phone, but he immediately grabbed her hand. Just as he was about to speak, his cell phone rang again. She immediately shook his hand off and fumbled the device out of his pocket. When she saw that Rong Jian was calling again, she immediately answered it and simultaneously gestured at Qin Jinhuan to keep silent.
Meanwhile, the latter glared at his cell phone angrily before he walked away without a sound.
Mu Yu ignored him, though. As soon as she answered the phone, she declared who she was. “It’s me, Chief Rong. I’m Mu Yu. Have you gone back to look for Madam Feng?”
“Not yet. I-I don’t know how to explain it to her.”
“Tsk! Just explain it to her directly! Can’t you just tell her why you got drunk last night?”
“I’m worried that she won’t want to see me and give me the opportunity to explain myself.”
“You haven’t tried it yet, so how would you know that Madam Feng refuses to see you? Perhaps she wants to listen to your explanation too.”
“Is that so?” There was a hint of surprise in Rong Jian’s unconfident voice. At this moment, he was no longer the awe-inspiring Chief of the Crime Unit. Instead, he was as nervous as a young boy who had just fallen in love.
“Just give it a try. We’ll find another way if it doesn’t work, but I think there won’t be any problems. If she refuses to open the door, just knock on the door a few more times and louder; at any rate, she’ll have to open the door once the neighbors are disturbed.” Mu Yu felt that she was being smart, and she proudly made eyes at Qin Jinhuan as he brought the meal in front of her. When she suddenly thought of Qiqi, she immediately suggested to Rong Jian, “That’s right—didn’t Madam Feng take Qiqi back with her? You can ask Qiqi to open the door for you. Everything will be easier once you manage to enter the apartment and meet Madam Feng.”
Rong Jian was instantly discouraged, though. “Ying was worried that Rubing hadn’t recovered from her leg injury and could not take good care of Qiqi, so she took the girl back halfway.”
“In that case, just go to Madam Feng yourself. It’ll definitely work as long as you follow my instructions. If it doesn’t work, just give me another call.”
“All right, I’ll give it a try.” Rong Jian finally gained some confidence after Mu Yu encouraged him, so he hung up the phone.
“All right, we can eat at last. Come on and open your mouth.” Qin Jinhuan held up a spoonful of rice in front of her after putting his cell phone back into his pocket.
Mu Yu smiled. “I’m no longer hungry all of a sudden. Why don’t you eat it yourself?”
“Be a good girl. It’s time for dinner, so you have to more or less eat something.” Qin Jinhuan had seen through Mu Yu’s intention of sending him away earlier, but he saved face for her in front of Feng Rubing because it was almost time for dinner. Even if Mu Yu hadn’t told him to leave the ward, Weng Yun would’ve brought the dinner from home in a while. He uncooperatively refused to leave because he thought her condition wasn’t good enough. He didn’t want her to bother herself about somebody else’s affairs, but he didn’t expect that Rong Jian would come after Feng Rubing had left.
Although Mu Yu wasn’t hungry, she complied and ate a mouthful of the rice. Then, she grabbed the spoon and fed Qin Jinhuan instead. “Thank you for taking the trouble to look after me these days, darling. Come and have some too.”
“This is a nutritious dinner specially prepared by Aunty Lan in order for you to recover better, so let’s not abuse her kindness.”
“I’m not that hungry. You won’t let Aunty Lan down by eating it, but you’ll definitely let her down by wasting the food. Come on, I’ll feed you. Open your mouth.” Mu Yu’s voice was so gentle that Qin Jinhuan subconsciously opened his mouth. “What a good boy. Well done, Huan. Come and have another mouthful of it.”
Qin Jinhuan was both amused and annoyed by Mu Yu’ tone as if she was coaxing a child. After gently knocking her on the head, he seized the right to use the spoon.
“Hey! I am really not—”
“At the very least, you should eat a little! I won’t eat if you don’t eat as well. In that case, we’ll just let the meal go to waste and abuse Aunty Lan’s kindness then.”
“All right, let’s eat together. I’ll eat a bite with every bite you have.” Mu Yu bared her teeth and sat Qin Jinhuan down. Then, she threw back the covers, sat next to him, and ate while singing, “Let’s sit in a row and eat fruits—one for you and one for me. Everyone laughs and giggles happily…”
Qin Jinhuan laughed and sang along to the beat, “Please hurry up and come over, brothers and sisters…”
“Wow! You know this nursery rhyme too?” Mu Yu exclaimed while clapping her hands.
Qin Jinhuan, who had been singing happily, suddenly fell silent as though he was startledly awakened. He even stopped scooping up the rice, and the smile on his face was immediately replaced by an extremely complicated expression.
“What’s wrong?” Mu Yu was startled by the strange look on his face. “Huan?”
“N-Nothing.” Qin Jinhuan lowered his eyes and held the spoon with his hand that was holding the rice bowl. Then, he picked up food and fed her using chopsticks instead.
However, Mu Yu noticed that there was something wrong with his expression, so she dodged the chopsticks he held out and was picking up food with. She grabbed his hand and asked anxiously, “There was something wrong with your expression just now! Tell me what’s wrong!”
“Nothing. Let’s eat.”
“Huan!” Mu Yu was somewhat displeased. “There was something wrong with that look on your face just now. Why aren’t you telling me about it? Do you distrust me or—”
“No, that’s not the case.”
“Since it’s not that you don’t trust me, then tell me why your expression suddenly changed while you were singing,” Mu Yu urged. When she recalled that they had been singing a nursery rhyme just now, she suddenly had a feeling and tried asking, “You were reminded of your mom, weren’t you?” Then, she felt that such words didn’t sound quite appropriate, so she immediately modified her question by asking, “Did the scene just now conjure up old memories, reminding you of our mom?”
Typically, Qin Jinhuan would’ve ridiculed Mu Yu for having such an assumption, but his attention wasn’t focused on this right now. After staring at her for a few seconds, he lowered his eyes and nodded. “My mom likes this nursery rhyme in particular. This is the song she sang to me most of the time. Every time she finished singing the song, she would ask me…”
After seeing him pause mid-sentence, Mu Yu asked curiously, “Ask you what?”
Instead of answering her, Qin Jinhuan lowered his eyes again, stuffed the food he picked up using the chopsticks into his mouth, and chewed it hard. All he ate was fresh vegetables, yet he chewed them hard over and over again as though he bore a deep grudge against the food in his mouth.
At this moment, Mu Yu figured out that this nursery rhyme touched a vulnerable spot he buried deep in his heart, so she didn’t dare to ask him again. Instead, she opened her mouth and waited for him to feed her in an attempt to divert his attention.
However, Qin Jinhuan didn’t stuff anything in her mouth. Instead, he knitted his brows and picked up the previous topic. “Whenever my mom finished singing this nursery rhyme in the past, she would ask me if I wanted a younger brother or sister. She often told me how good it was to have a younger sibling, so I would nod happily every time, call Qin Wentao, and tell him to come home because Mom said she could conjure up a younger sibling for me only if he came home. Most of the time, Qin Wentao would find excuses not to come back. Even if he was annoyed by my nagging, he would only come home once or twice. But whenever he came home, he would give my mom a dressing-down and leave without giving her the opportunity to explain herself, and she would cry as soon as he left. My mom still often sang this nursery rhyme to me afterward, but she never asked me that question anymore.” He gnashed his teeth toward the end of his speech.
Mu Yu was deeply aware of Qin Jinhuan’s hatred for Qin Wentao, so she worried that the relationship between the father and son would worsen if this conversation continued. Just as she was about to stop him from continuing the conversation, someone hurriedly entered the ward. When she turned her head and looked at them, she was instantly stunned. The ones coming in were none other than Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun, both of whom Qin Jinhuan hated bitterly.
