My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 271
Chapter 271 Smug Calculations
Meanwhile, Mu Yu’s parents had been sent home by Weng Yun at Qin Jinhuan’s secret request, leaving only Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan in her ward at this moment.
Mu Yu closed her eyes quietly as if she was asleep, but Qin Jinhuan knew that she was only pretending to do so.
Her parents and Jiang Wenwen had been present earlier on, so she didn’t give him the cold shoulder since she didn’t want to make them worried or let them notice that something was wrong. Now that everyone else had left at this moment, she no longer needed to keep on pretending.
Sitting on the edge of her bed, Qin Jinhuan reached out and gently grabbed her hand outside the quilt, but she retracted her hand under the quilt as soon as he touched it—it was as though it had touched thistles and thorns. Qin Jinhuan was stunned by this and wanted to call her name, but his voice never came out of his throat despite the few times he parted his lips.
He knew that she was still angry, but he couldn’t give her a more reasonable explanation right now. For the time being, he had no way other than keeping her company in silence and devoting all his attention to care for her.
Just then, the door of the ward was gently pushed open. Qin Jinhuan subconsciously raised his eyes and wasn’t surprised to see Rong Ying coming in; he lowered his head and continued looking at Mu Yu’s calm expression.
“Is Yu asleep, Huan?” Rong Ying kept her voice low for fear that she might wake Mu Yu.
“Is there anything?” Qin Jinhuan asked in reply without taking his eyes off Mu Yu even once.
“Yeah,” Rong Ying replied. Then, she turned around and quietly walked out of the ward.
Qin Jinhuan hesitated for a moment. After tucking Mu Yu up in her quilt, he slowly stood up and followed Rong Ying out of the ward.
The two of them then came to the quiet end of the corridor before Rong Ying looked around and confirmed that there wasn’t anyone else around them. Then, she asked softly, “Did Zeyu say anything to you earlier?”
Rong Ying previously told Wen Zeyu that she was going home to rest, but she had actually been keeping an eye on him and Qin Jinhuan in secret instead of leaving. She saw from afar that they had a conversation, though she couldn’t hear what they talked about. However, she noticed that something was wrong with Wen Zeyu’s expression, so she was very worried. After Wen Zeyu and everyone else had left, she immediately came and asked Qin Jinhuan about it.
However, instead of answering Rong Ying’s question directly, Qin Jinhuan asked in reply, “What do you think he said?”
“Me? I wouldn’t have asked you if I knew that. Did he really misunderstand us?”
“Are you afraid that he will misunderstand us?”
“No, I’m not.” Rong Ying seemed somewhat panicky because Qin Jinhuan was staring at her as he spoke. After averting her eyes, she replied, “I’m not afraid that he might misunderstand us; I’m afraid that he’ll talk nonsense and cause Yu to misunderstand us. Yu is already at odds with you in the first place, so you mustn’t do anything that displeases her. Otherwise, the conflict between you two will deepen.”
“Is that really the reason?”
Rong Ying was dumbfounded by Qin Jinhuan’s words. “What do you mean, Huan?”
Qin Jinhuan raised his eyes. “You’re just worried he might get the wrong idea. It seems like he does have a place in your heart.”
“No! He doesn’t have a place in my heart at all! The person who has a place in my heart is…” Rong Ying forced herself to refrain from saying the word ‘you’, for she knew that it was totally pointless to say such a thing at this moment.
Upon hearing Rong Ying’s words, Qin Jinhuan didn’t question her anymore. Instead, he replied flatly, “I also hope that he doesn’t have a place in your heart.”
Rong Ying’s eyes suddenly flickered before she asked as if she was incredulous, “Why? Why would you hope so, Huan?”
“That’s because he already has a girlfriend now, and I don’t want you to get hurt,” Qin Jinhuan replied. Suddenly, he noticed the flicker of delight in the depths of Rong Ying’s eyes. After frowning slightly, he quickly added, “I hope that both you and Xi can be happy. You two are the ones I care about the most.”
When she understood what Qin Jinhuan was hinting at, Rong Ying realized how blunt she was. Looking somewhat awkward at once, she lowered her eyes and explained with a forced laugh, “Perhaps because I’ve been used to playing with Zeyu since childhood, I feel like I’m seeing my brother whenever I see him. The feelings I have for him are solely platonic; I have no romantic feelings both for him and for you.”
“That’s good.” Qin Jinhuan’s voice still sounded calm. “It’s already late. You’ve tired yourself out for an entire day, so go back and rest,” he said. Then, as he was about to take a step, he suddenly recalled her previous question. He paused and explained, “Zeyu didn’t misunderstand anything. He just kept asking about Yu since he cares a lot about her.” With that, he went back into the ward right away without waiting for Rong Ying to say anything.
As soon as he entered the ward, he saw that Mu Yu had sat up and was carefully getting out of bed. He hurried over and helped her while reminding her nervously, “Be careful! Are you going to the restroom? Let me carry you there.”
“It’s not necessary since I’m fine by myself. Thank you.” Mu Yu sounded polite, but she pushed his hands away unceremoniously.
“Don’t be stubborn! You’re very weak right now!” Qin Jinhuan’s tone sounded serious; he held her arms and refused to let go of her no matter how hard she tried to push him away.
Mu Yu sneered. “Who’s responsible for putting me in such a state right now?”
“The police will give you an answer very soon. Even if you don’t trust me, you should trust Rong Jian, your superiors, and your team.”
Qin Jinhuan’s voice was soft and gentle, but it sounded so confident that Mu Yu couldn’t find any flaws in it. Even though she was rendered speechless, she was inwardly defiant. Seeing that he wanted to scoop her up in his arms, she immediately replied resentfully, “I’m not going to the restroom.”
“Then why are you getting out of bed?”
“I want to drink some water.”
“All right. In that case, sit down while I pour you some,” Qin Jinhuan replied while carrying her onto the bed. After putting a pillow behind her back and helping her adopt the most comfortable posture, he tucked her in and quickly turned around to pour some water.
Mu Yu glanced at his familiar figure from behind before quickly withdrawing her gaze.
“The water is here. It’s a bit hot, so wait a minute.” Qin Jinhuan stood before her bed while gently blowing on the steaming boiling water.
Had this happened in the past, Mu Yu would certainly have been happy because of Qin Jinhuan’s attentiveness. However, she was in a different state of mind right now, so her heart was filled with restlessness and resentment. Meanwhile, her tone of voice was also emotional. “I’m not that thirsty yet. Put it aside to let it cool down, and don’t blow your saliva into it.”
She said the last sentence with a look of disgust, and it made Qin Jinhuan feel very bad. Still, he obediently put the glass on the table at one side.
Mu Yu’s physical condition was as bad as her mood, so the only thing he could do for her right now was to obey her in every way and appease her bit by bit.
Without waiting for the water to cool down, Mu Yu pulled out one of the pillows behind her back in vexation and lay down. As the big movement tugged on her wounds, she couldn’t help gasping in pain instantly. “Ugh!”
“Slow down!” Qin Jinhuan hurriedly held her in his arms. He asked, “Aren’t you drinking water anymore?”
“No, I’m not.”
“All right. Let me help you lie down then.” Qin Jinhuan laid the pillow flat with one hand before carefully helping her to lie down. Even though he didn’t dare to breathe, he reminded her and said from time to time, “Be careful.”
However, Mu Yu closed her eyes as soon as she lay down, looking as though she didn’t want to see him even for a second.
At this moment, she looked slightly better than she had been in the afternoon, but her face was still pale and devoid of color. Her lips were dry, and her hair was unkempt. Moreover, the noticeable grazes on her face made Qin Jinhuan’s heart ache even deeper. After letting out a soft sigh, he seriously apologized, “I’m sorry.”
Upon hearing that, Mu Yu immediately opened her eyes and questioned him in a hoarse voice, “Why are you apologizing to me?”
“I failed to protect you and our baby.”
The word ‘baby’ caused the initially calm Mu Yu to instantly burst into tears.
“Don’t cry. Don’t cry.” Qin Jinhuan hastily wiped her tears away. As he hurriedly apologized to her, he tried to appease her. “It’s my fault this time. It’s my fault for failing to protect you two. If you feel really bad, just hit me and lash out at me—you can even bite me again,” he said while stretching out an arm. Then, he unfastened the buttons of his sleeve, rolled his sleeve up, and put his arm in front of her. “In short, don’t take it out on your body, okay?”
Mu Yu glared at him resentfully with teary eyes. “You shouldn’t have defended Yin Anran like that if you really care so much about me! She’s the one who killed our baby and put me into such a state!”
“Listen, Yu!” Qin Jinhuan replied with a grave expression. “I swear that if Yin Anran really is the one who did this, I’ll never let her off even if her sister is alive and begs me on her knees!” he swore while narrowing his eyes with visible cruelty and ruthlessness in them. Then, he added between clenched teeth, “No matter who did it, I’ll never let her off! I’ll let her pay the price for this and taste what it feels like to meet a fate worse than death!”
The profound chilliness in Qin Jinhuan’s words made Mu Yu shiver. For a moment, she didn’t know what to say; she merely stared blankly at him while clutching her quilt.
As he held Mu Yu’s cold hand, Qin Jinhuan immediately softened both his gaze and his tone of voice. “Yu, you merely guessed according to your subjective views that Yin Anran did it, right? For now, you can’t produce any evidence to prove that she’s the perpetrator who harmed you and our baby, right?” he asked. Then, since she didn’t answer, he let out a sigh and advised earnestly, “Yu, you’re a forensic doctor, so you should be well aware that a forensic doctor’s duty is to provide all kinds of concrete evidence for the police to solve cases; that way, the criminals are precisely convicted of their crimes. You should also know that the most forbidden thing to do while solving a case is to make subjective conjectures without any evidence. Sometimes, even when there seems to be evidence, all kinds of considerations and investigations have to be done before a conclusion is made. Otherwise, with a little carelessness, the real criminal will laugh in the dark, whereas the innocent will suffer injustice—just like how Feng Rubing was nearly convicted as the murderer in Li Jianyun’s murder case. This will be an outcome that no one is willing to see. You surmised that the accident was Yin Anran’s doing because there has always been a conflict between the two of you. The root of this conflict is the special treatment that I gave her earlier, so the one at fault isn’t any of you, but me! I cared for her because—”
Mu Yu interrupted him coldly, “I don’t want to listen to the lousy story of your past relationships. I just want to find out who killed my baby!”
Qin Jinhuan looked somewhat embarrassed when Mu Yu cut him short, but he soon composed his features and asked in reply, “Let’s set aside the fact that all the evidence points to Dong Wanqing; instead, we’ll talk about this person’s motive for hurting you. If Yin Anran was the one who did it, what do you think her motive will be? Did she do so purely out of her jealousy toward you? She’s already living a comfortable life, but she’ll be losing her happiness, freedom, and even her life because of her jealousy. Wouldn’t this be too much of a price?”
Mu Yu asked in retort, “So did Dong Wanqing have a motive if Yin Anran didn’t have one? Dong Wanqing’s life is much more comfortable than Yin Anran’s!”
However, instead of answering Mu Yu’s question, Qin Jinhuan asked in reply, “Do you think that Dong Wanqing isn’t clever enough to frame someone else for this crime? Is this the main reason you don’t believe that she’s behind this?”
“Yes, it is. Judging from the evidence that you all have at present, no evidence can prove directly that Dong Wanqing is the one who did this. She’s merely under greater suspicion because all the evidence points to her, but this doesn’t rule Yin Anran out as a suspect. Dong Wanqing’s IQ can’t compare with Yin Anran’s at all. Compared with the possibility that Dong Wanqing framed Yin Anran for the accident, I believe that there is a greater possibility that it was Yin Anran who framed Dong Wanqing for the accident.”
“However, you shouldn’t forget that Dong Wanqing has the experienced and cunning Dong Yueyun behind her. She has always been a pawn used by Dong Yueyun to harm somebody else—you can see it from Xi’s poisoning. Therefore, Dong Wanqing’s motive in hurting you doesn’t lie with her. Instead, it lies with Dong Yueyun or Qin Wentao.”
Mu Yu was shocked. “Do you mean that—”
Qin Jinhuan nodded. “Their purpose isn’t to kill you, but to kill the baby in your womb—my baby.”
“They didn’t know that I was pregnant, though!” Mu Yu realized how stupid she was as soon as she said that. They didn’t know that she was now pregnant for real, but they were aware of her previously feigned pregnancy. Moreover, they had offered her poisoned candy through Chengxi exactly to kill her so-called baby.
Mu Yu let out a gasp, for she once again experienced the unscrupulous conflicts within families that were acted out on television.
“Yin Anran would have to surrender her own life if she wants to harm you, which isn’t worth it. On the other hand, if Dong Yueyun and Qin Wentao want to harm you, they just have to surrender Dong Wanqing’s life. Of course, if they succeed in shifting the blame, they won’t even have to surrender Dong Wanqing’s life. In short, doing so won’t do them any harm, but they’ll benefit from this. Grandpa is old and may pass away at any time, so the Qin Family’s fortune must be allocated before he passes away. Now that you have lost the baby as they wish and can’t get pregnant again in a short time, they’ll get a larger share of the family fortune if Grandpa dies before you get pregnant again,” Qin Jinhuan explained before letting out a sneer. “Their calculations are simply too smart.”
Mu Yu was startled for a while before she asked, “What are you going to do then?”
Qin Jinhuan’s face was instantly as miserable as sin. “Of course, I will—”
However, he was interrupted by the ringing of his cell phone.
