My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 247
Chapter 247 Infertile!
Once Mu Yu ran past a corner along the hallway, she turned to see Jiang Wenwen standing by the entrance of the forensic lab. Jiang Wenwen had cupped her hands around her mouth and was shouting for Mu Yu’s name. “What is it? What is it?” Mu Yu asked worriedly as she ran over. Jiang Wenwen jogged toward Mu Yu once she saw the other girl.
“Did something happen?” Mu Yu asked as she huffed and puffed for her breath.
“Young Master Qin is here.”
“You’re shouting and calling me so frantically just because of that?” Mu Yu asked in disbelief.
“Yeah!” Jiang Wenwen replied. After releasing a sigh of relief, Mu Yu then proceeded to lecture the other woman in a soft tone. “I thought something happened to you. That really scared me! You can just let him wait if he’s here; why did you have to make such a big fuss over it? Were you trying to get the whole building to know that he’s here?” she uttered as she flashed grins and nodded apologetically toward the colleagues around her.
“I was just worried about you, okay?” Jiang Wenwen put on a pitiful look.
“What were you worried about?” Mu Yu asked.
“I was worried that Young Master Qin would get jealous if he saw you on the phone with Yihan. If you guys say sweet things that shouldn’t be heard by others, then—” Jiang Wenwen hadn’t finished her words when Mu Yu interrupted her. “I wasn’t talking to Yihan on the phone, all right?”
“If that wasn’t a call from Yihan, why did you have to hide away so sneakily? Furthermore, you have been on the call for an hour! I called your phone just a while ago, and your line was still busy. Wait!” Jiang Wenwen clamped a hand over her mouth abruptly. “You said that you weren’t on the call with Xin Yihan. Did you find yourself a new admirer?”
“Don’t be silly!” Mu Yu threw her a side-glare as she explained herself. “I was on a call with Chief Rong!”
“Chief Rong? Chief Rong Jian?” Jiang Wenwen’s head was still filled with question marks. “He doesn’t seem like a particularly talkative man; why do you guys have so much to talk about? Ah! Did you guys…”
“Is there something wrong with your brain?” Mu Yu helplessly knocked her knuckles against the top of Jiang Wenwen’s head. “Chief Rong is my leader; we were on the phone because we were discussing work!”
“Why couldn’t you just talk in public if that was work? Furthermore, it’s not normal to talk about work for an hour! My leader and I usually just get straight to the point in our conversations—our phone calls would be two minutes at most!” Jiang Wenwen replied.
“You’re overthinking it.” Mu Yu smiled as she slipped her hand into the other girl’s arm and led her back to the forensic lab. “Chief Rong and I were discussing a case. Huan knows about the case himself; he even joins in on our discussions sometimes.”
“That’s great—you have to appreciate what you have. Yu, you’re the Qin Family’s young mistress now; you have to be a little more careful and thoughtful with everything you do.” Jiang Wenwen gave her friend a reminder once she calmed herself down.
“Thank you for your care and wisdom, Teacher Jiang. I’ll keep your wise words in mind,” Mu Yu said in a teasing tone.
“I was saying that out of kindness.”
“I know—that’s why I’m buying you dinner to show you my appreciation. By the way, did Huan tell you where we’re going for dinner later?” Mu Yu asked.
“Gloria Hotel,” said a man’s voice. Mu Yu instinctively turned toward the forensic lab when she heard Qin Jinhuan’s voice. As expected, she saw him leaning against the door frame as he beamed at her. Nie Yunkang had already left the lab, so Qin Jinhuan was inside all by himself. “Zeyu will be coming, right?” Mu Yu asked as she gathered her stuff. Qin Jinhuan simply gave Jiang Wenwen a glance before he spoke in a deep, thoughtful tone. “He has to come.”
Mu Yu quickly threw Jiang Wenwen a playful look, and Jiang Wenwen found her cheeks turning red once she understood what they meant. She then let out an awkward chuckle. Once Mu Yu was done packing, she walked toward Jiang Wenwen and threw her arm around her friend as she smiled. “Let’s go!”
By the time the three of them arrived at their private room in the restaurant, Wen Zeyu was already there. He greeted Mu Yu in a warm and affable manner once he saw her.
“It’s been a while, Wen Zeyu. You just get more good-looking every time I see you,” Mu Yu replied as she casually moved around to make sure that Jiang Wenwen’s seat was between hers and Wen Zeyu’s.
“Of course.” Wen Zeyu chuckled as he pulled the chairs out for both women in a gentlemanly manner. Then, he handed the menu to Mu Yu. “Take a look at what you would like, Yu.”
“I’m not picky.” She pushed the menu back with a smile.
“But you’re the pregnant lady here! I don’t know what sort of food and drinks you should stay away from. Perhaps Huan can order the food, then. I’m sure you’ve done some homework on it, Huan.” Wen Zeyu pushed the menu over to Qin Jinhuan. Qin Jinhuan took the menu over as he didn’t want Wen Zeyu to suspect anything.
While Qin Jinhuan ordered the dishes, Wen Zeyu thoughtfully asked about Mu Yu. “How has your appetite been, Yu? Have you experienced any strong pregnancy side effects?”
“The little kid is really obedient; I don’t have any troubles at all.”
Wen Zeyu stuck his thumb up. “What a good baby. You can make a dozen kids for Huan if every baby is as good as this one!”
Mu Yu burst out in laughter. “A dozen? Do you think I’m a sow?” Jiang Wenwen laughed as she participated in their conversation. “Are you trying to form a football team within your own family?”
“Wouldn’t that be great? The Qin Family has only had a single son for the past few generations. Grandpa probably longs for more grandchildren and a merrier household even in his dreams. It’s easy to care for babies, but it’s hard to get them. It really depends on skill; I don’t know if Huan’s that skillful.” Wen Zeyu teased Qin Jinhuan playfully.
Qin Jinhuan simply rolled his eyes at the man annoyedly. “I’ve already scattered my seeds; I’m just waiting for them to grow and blossom now. You shouldn’t worry about me; if anything, you should be worrying about yourself. The Yao Family’s business is going to fall into Yao Zewei’s hands if you don’t work a little harder.”
Mu Yu interrupted their conversation then. “Who’s Yao Zewei?”
“Zeyu’s cousin. His uncle’s son. A few days ago, Yao Chenhua just handed Yao Zewei his role as the vice president of Hui Ming Group. Now, rumors are saying that Yao Chenhua might hand the company over to Yao Zewei.”
Mu Yu couldn’t understand it. “Zeyu is his son, though. Why would he hand the company over to his nephew rather than his own son? That doesn’t make sense!”
“That’s because Zeyu is infertile—just like his father,” said Qin Jinhuan.
“What?! That’s impossible, right?” Mu Yu was shocked. Meanwhile, Jiang Wenwen simply stared at Wen Zeyu with a look of disbelief on her face.
“How could you believe stuff like that?” Wen Zeyu’s face turned beet red as he awkwardly explained himself. “That was just some rumor that Yao Zewei started because he wanted to trick my father into handing the company to him, okay?”
“Oh.” Mu Yu and Jiang Wenwen let out a sigh of relief. However, the look on Qin Jinhuan’s face remained the same. Clearly, he knew about such inside information all along. He continued to speak in a nonchalant tone as he poured some wine into Wen Zeyu’s glass. “It doesn’t matter whether I believe it. What matters is that Yao Chenhua does. Look at yourself—you’re 30 years old, and there are loads of women tagging along behind you. Yet, you’ve never made any one of them pregnant. Isn’t that true?”
“That’s because I don’t think any of those women are worthy of being my child’s mother!” Wen Zeyu exclaimed.
“Do you think that sounds convincing? Do you think Yao Chenhua would believe that?”
“I… I don’t care if he does!”
“He already believes the rumors! Yao Zewei’s wife is already three months pregnant. I heard that the blood tests have confirmed that the baby is a boy, and Yao Zewei has already told Yao Chenhua that he will have himself a grandson that may one day inherit the business once the child is born. Yao Chenhua has agreed to this. Since the old man has been struggling with his health, Hui Ming Group will probably end up in Yao Zewei’s hands within the next three to five years if this goes on. When that happens, all of the hard work your mom put into the foundation of Yao Chenhua’s company will end up in someone else’s hands. By then, don’t say that I didn’t remind you about that,” Qin Jinhuan said to Wen Zeyu.
Mu Yu felt furious. “Yao Chenhua sounds like he’s too easily confused. How could he just believe what Yao Zewei says?”
Qin Jinhuan proposed an alternative viewpoint right then. “Yao Chenhua has his logic. If Wen Zeyu is truly infertile, Hui Ming Group would eventually end up in the hands of someone who’s not part of the family. Yao Chenhua holds really strong beliefs in keeping the family business within the family; he probably decided that it would be better if he left the business for his nephew and his nephew’s son in this case. After all, as long as the company still belongs to someone from the Yao Family, it would be able to benefit the rest of the Yao Family’s younger generations.”
“But you just said that the company was a result of both Zeyu’s mother and Yao Chenhua’s efforts! Zeyu deserves a part of the company no matter what, right?!”
“What’s the purpose of us getting all worried over him when he doesn’t even try to fight for it himself?” Qin Jinhuan gave him an exasperated stare. Right then, the waiter served their dishes.
“Well, since it’s rare for us to all be gathered here, let’s not talk about such unpleasant topics. It’s been a while since we last drank together, Zeyu; let’s have a few glasses tonight.” Qin Jinhuan changed his tone of voice. Although Wen Zeyu was rather gloomy then, he was still alert enough as he quickly held onto Qin Jinhuan’s glass. “Yu’s pregnant; you shouldn’t be drinking.” Qin Jinhuan simply shoved his arm away and continued to pour more drinks. “I’m allowed to drink precisely because Yu’s pregnant. During such a critical time, I’ll have to quit some habits; drinking isn’t one of them.”
Once Mu Yu realized what he meant, she let out a chuckle. She was impressed that he continued to put on a show then. Wen Zeyu, who still thought that Mu Yu was actually pregnant, laughed once he heard Qin Jinhuan’s words and no longer stopped the latter from drinking after that. “Ah, it’s a shame that Rong Jian’s not in town. The three of us could’ve gotten really drunk tonight.”
“The two of us can drink for now; we can meet up with him again once he’s back.” Qin Jinhuan clinked his glass against Wen Zeyu’s as he sighed. “I haven’t truly enjoyed drinking for a while as I have been trying to satisfy my grandpa’s wishes. Let’s enjoy ourselves for once tonight.” He then turned to smile at Mu Yu. “Can I do that, Yu?”
She smiled. “Just don’t go all crazy once you’re drunk.”
“My darling is the most thoughtful and understanding wife I can ask for.” After having a drink with Wen Zeyu, Qin Jinhuan turned back to Mu Yu with a grin. “Yu, do you know what’s the greatest difference between you and a monkey?”
“The greatest difference between me and a monkey?” Mu Yu thought about it before she shook her head.
“Monkeys live in the forests; you live in my heart,” Qin Jinhuan uttered with a loving, romantic gaze. Hearing that, both Jiang Wenwen and Mu Yu burst out in laughter.
“Just drink your wine. What is it with all this public display of affection?” Wen Zeyu chuckled lightly as he lifted his glass once again. A hint of loneliness flashed across his gaze when he lowered his head to drink his wine. He had found it hard to fall for other women after he fell for Rong Ying at a very young age. He no longer wished to force himself into anything just for the sake of certain benefits either. It’s a shame that I never managed to make my way into her heart after all my years and years of effort. Her heart has already been filled with the presence of another person. Even though that person rejected her a long time ago and already has another lover, Rong Ying’s feelings for that person are still as solid as ever.
“I’d rather just be my own woman if I can’t be the Juliet to his Romeo. I’ve never considered a third possible outcome in my relationship. I hope you don’t get too pushy; I don’t think we’d be able to stay friends if that happens.” Rong Ying’s rejection rang and replayed itself in his ears a countless number of times, but he still felt a stabbing pain in his heart every time he thought about it. After staying with another family for so many years, Wen Zeyu had always tried his best to improve his abilities in hopes that others would look up to him someday. However, he realized that no matter how much effort he put in, he was just like the glowing fire of a candle beneath a sparkling, grand chandelier—regardless of how bright his fire was, he would still be outshined by others. He only seemed average at best, and the harsh reality of this gradually eroded the passion that he felt. Furthermore, Rong Ying’s rejection only pushed him one step closer to the edge.
Wen Zeyu lowered his gaze when he saw the confident look on Qin Jinhuan’s face through his wine glass. He was afraid that someone would recognize the hint of jealousy he felt toward the other man. As the night went on, Qin Jinhuan urged him to drink; the two men finished one glass and followed with another. Wen Zeyu wanted the alcohol to numb the resentment and anger that he felt; he wanted it to turn him back into the cheerful and kind gentleman everyone else thought he was.
“I don’t want to be my own woman, Zeyu; let me be your Juliet, all right?” A gentle voice with a hint of shyness rang beside his ears. He felt shivers running down his spine as he instinctively nodded and wrapped his arms around her…
