My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 244
Chapter 244 He Harmed Her
“W-What do you mean?” Feng Rubing’s voice was trembling as she spoke. Her response only made Rong Jian more suspicious than ever. “Is it true that Qiqi’s not your younger sister?” he asked again.
“What nonsense are you talking about? How could Qiqi not be my sister? Who told you such nonsense?” Her face was pale as she refuted his claims. Rong Jian felt his heart aching to see the look on her face, but he stone-heartedly proceeded with his words. “I ran a DNA test.”
Horror spread across her face as she stared at him. Her lips trembled uncontrollably—she was too shocked to even speak. He then took another step closer. “Qiqi is Li Jianyun’s daughter!” Rong Jian decided to simply lie to her as he felt like Qiqi’s appearances did slightly resemble Li Jianyun.
But, the moment Rong Jian came to the end of his sentence, fresh blood spilled out of Feng Rubing’s mouth as her eyes rolled upward. She then collapsed onto the ground as her entire body turned weak. “Rubing! Rubing!” Rong Jian ran forward to hold onto her as he shouted for the nurse.
The medical staff instantly sent Rubing back to her ward to take the necessary emergency measures, while Rong Jian anxiously waited outside her ward. Soon enough, Rong Ying approached to ask him about the situation. She gave him a long, angry lecture after she found out about what he did. “She isn’t just physically weak right now; she’s also close to having a mental breakdown. She can’t handle anything too extreme now. Didn’t I remind you about this? Did you forget what I said?” she barked.
His face was filled with guilt as he replied sheepishly. “I know she shouldn’t be triggered right now, but I only did this because I wanted to remove her name from the list of suspects. I—”
Rong Ying interrupted his words bluntly. “Don’t tell me about stuff related to the case; I have no interest in that! I don’t have any criminals here; I only have patients with me! Anyone who hinders my patients’ recovery would be offending me! Rong Jian, I’ll give you a final warning—if you continue to ignore my words, you can either take Feng Rubing away from this hospital, or I can get a security guard to kick you out!”
“I’m sorry,” he muttered.
“Why are you saying sorry to me? You should pray that Feng Rubing recovers without any further complications. I’ve never seen anyone treat a girl they fancy like this—how could you treat her in ways that would get her furious enough to puke blood when you’re clearly in love with her? It’s no wonder that you’ve been single for so long. Hmph.” She scoffed.
“I…” Rong Jian initially wanted to explain himself, but he then decided that he couldn’t be bothered to do it. Instead, he let out a long sigh as he stared at the closed door of Feng Rubing’s ward. Seconds later, the door was opened. He immediately headed over and stared at the doctor worriedly.
The doctor shut the door behind him and led Rong Jian toward a corner before he spoke. “The patient vomited blood and fainted because she was too worked up earlier. She was also extremely emotional when she first came to her senses, so I’ve given her a tranquilizer. The patient’s overall condition isn’t looking good. You should be careful not to trigger her in any way; things might turn ugly otherwise.”
“I got it,” Rong Jian replied.
Rong Yin interrupted their conversation with her stone-cold voice. “Just saying that you understand is no use; you have to remember! I don’t want to hear you shouting and howling for us to save her life again!”
Her words left Rong Jian feeling ashamed of himself. He nodded solemnly. “I won’t do it again.”
“Alright then.” Rong Ying turned and gave several orders to a few doctors before she left them. The doctors had a few more words with Rong Jian before they, too, left him alone outside the ward. He watched them leave before he headed toward Feng Rubing’s room. Right as he reached his hand out to open her door, he stopped mid-air and held it there for a long time—he couldn’t bring himself to push the door open. I wouldn’t have asked her so straightforwardly if I knew that lying to Rubing would make her feel so emotional. Li Jianyun’s body hasn’t been cremated, so it’s not much of a hassle to arrange for a DNA test between him and Qiqi. I just wanted to clear up all of the hidden secrets in this situation so that Feng Rubing will no longer be a suspect in this case. Rong Jian gradually lowered his hand before he looked through the observation window to see Feng Rubing lying still on the bed. Rubing, why haven’t you been able to open up to me after so long? Even if you don’t love me; even if you don’t accept my feelings for you, can’t you just treat me as a friend? Is it that hard for you to trust me? Overwhelmed by his depressed feelings, Rong Jian lowered his gaze to conceal the hurt that could be seen in his eyes.
He truly wanted to help her. It wasn’t just because he had feelings for her; it was also because of his sense of justice as a criminal policeman—he didn’t want to let a criminal loose and he didn’t want an innocent person to be framed. Right then, he slowly turned around to sit himself down on the bench nearby. He lowered his head and ran his fingers through his messy hair as he let out another long sigh of agony.
Judging from Feng Rubing’s reaction earlier, I’m sure that Feng Qiqi is Li Jianyun’s daughter. Mu Yu’s deductions should be about right. But, the next question is: how did Rubing’s grandmother end up taking Feng Qiqi into their household? How did Li Jianyun manage to find out that Qiqi was his biological daughter? Rong Jian pondered the questions for a while before he figured that they both weren’t important questions. Since I’ve established the relationship between Li Jianyun and Feng Qiqi, what matters now is whether Feng Rubing is willing to open up about the truth once she calms down.
There was another thing that he desperately wanted to find out. What exactly did Feng Rubing go through when she was 15? I feel like her experiences are related to the reason that she’s unwilling to accept me right now. Yet—and Mu Yu agrees with me on this—I think the incident didn’t happen the way Feng Rubing explained it to me in the past.
However, now that the situation had turned out like this, Rong Jian decided that he would personally look into these things instead of hoping that Feng Rubing would tell him all about them. Furthermore, he also wanted to investigate the relationship between the three—Li Jianyun, Zhao Yongli, and Sun Meilan’s—murder cases. He stood up and headed toward an empty stairway before he gave Fan Lifeng a call. When he found out that Fan Lifeng was already on the way to Guangyang County, he then gave Liu Xiaofan a call.
“Chief Rong, I’m interrogating Miao right now. Miao said that Li Jianyun had never once mentioned being from Huacheng, nor had he ever mentioned anything about his hometown. Also, Chief Rong, Miao said that Li Jianyun had once opened up when he was drunk—he mentioned something about harming a girl.” Liu Xiaofan reported.
Rong Jian’s ears perked up anxiously the moment he heard what the other man said. “What did Li Jianyun do to the girl?”
“I’m not sure; I…” Liu Xiaofan hesitated.
“Hand the phone over to Miao!”
“Oh, okay.” Soon enough, Miao’s voice came from the other end of the call. “Hello, Chief Rong. I’m…”
“What did Li Jianyun tell you when he was drunk?”
“Oh. I recall him mentioning that he hurt a girl. He didn’t say anything else,” Miao replied.
“Did he mention what he did to the girl?” Rong Jian asked.
“No.”
“Did he say anything about what the girl was like?” Rong Jian asked again.
“No.”
“Did he mention when that whole incident happened?” Rong Jian persisted.
“No.”
“Did he mention where it happened?” Rong Jian continued.
“No, not at all. He was extremely drunk then; all he did was repeat the same sentence over and over again. He said, ‘I was the one who hurt that girl’. When I cheekily attempted to ask him who that girl was, he simply ignored me and continued to repeat that sentence throughout the night. The next morning, when we were sober, I casually asked him about the girl he claimed to have harmed again, but he simply told me not to talk nonsense. He seemed rather displeased then. I guess he probably did something immoral to a young lady when he was younger; perhaps he only said those words because of the guilt he felt when he was drunk,” Miao explained.
“I got it. Hand the phone over to Officer Liu.” Rong Jian ordered.
“Oh. Alright.”
Liu Xiaofan quickly took the phone over. “Chief Rong?”
“You can let Miao leave,” Rong Jian said.
“Don’t we have to question him anymore?” Liu Xiaofan asked.
“No. You can send him off now; I have other things I need to tell you about.”
“Okay.” A while later, Liu Xiaofan’s voice sounded again. “Miao just left, Chief Rong.”
“Okay. I need you to head over to Huacheng tonight to investigate Li Jianyun’s relatives over there,” Rong Jian ordered. Liu Xiaofan immediately questioned his decision. “I already did that the last time, Chief Rong. Why do I have to do it again?”
“Just go through everything again carefully to see if you missed out on anything.”
“What if I didn’t miss out on anything?” Liu Xiaofan asked.
“If you didn’t… then I want you to check if he had any encounters with Zhao Yongli in Huacheng six years ago.”
“Six years ago… Ah, that might be a little hard. It would be a lot easier if we could locate Gong Lilan. They were still married six years ago, so Gong Lilan might know about the sort of people that Zhao Yongli would often meet then. Wait; since Wang Linhua and Kiki have both passed away, Gong Lilan wouldn’t be worried about anyone taking revenge on her anymore. It’s possible that she might have returned to Huacheng, right?” Liu Xiaofan asked.
“You can try contacting Gong Lilan, then.” Rong Jian urged.
“Alright. I’ll head home to change my clothes before I go to Huacheng.”
“Okay. Have a safe trip.” Once he ended the call, Rong Jian pulled his notebook out to run through his notes as he fell deep into thought. Li Jianyun doesn’t have a single relative in An City, and he doesn’t seem to have established a good life here. Yet, he tried so many ways to shift his household registration details over to An City. It seems exceptionally odd to me since dealing with household registration documents can be a tedious process. Moreover, he doesn’t even have a relative in Huacheng; not even a distant relative! Even a child who came from an orphanage would have at least a few distant relatives if he was a local, right? Could it be possible that… Li Jianyun isn’t from Huacheng? A man who never talks about his hometown… He said ‘I was the one who hurt that girl’… A thought flashed across Rong Jian’s mind when he recalled what Feng Rubing said about her experiences when she was aged 15 to 16. His heart nearly leaped out of his mouth as he instantly turned to stare in the direction of Feng Rubing’s ward. Could it be… H-How could that be possible?! Rong Jian took a long while to finally calm himself down and organize his thoughts. He then got to his feet and headed toward Rong Ying’s villa in Fraternity Hospital.
…
Sunlight spilled into the room the next morning. Despite the skies being bright and clear, the weather was still freezing cold and the grounds were still covered in snow. Mu Yu dragged her body up into a sitting position when the alarm clock rang. Her entire body was aching. Qin Jinhuan had his eyes half-opened as he stole a glance at his watch and saw that it was only 6.30 AM. “Why are you up so early?”
“I wanted to pay Xi a visit at the hospital,” Mu Yu explained.
“You don’t have to be there this early.”
“I’m worried about her. She’s only in the hospital because she was trying to protect me, after all. You can sleep for a while longer. I can go over myself.” She was already out of the bed by the time she finished her sentence. She immediately headed over to the bathroom. How could Qin Jinhuan continue to sleep when she was already awake? He had no choice but to pull himself out of bed as well. “Let’s go together,” he offered.
“Don’t you have to work?” she asked.
“Work doesn’t matter,” he replied. She seemed to contemplate something for a moment, but she didn’t make any comments afterward. The both of them headed downstairs after they washed up and got themselves changed. Right then, Qin Xiaozhi strode out of the dining area with a thermos flask. Mu Yu hurried over and asked him what the flask was for, only to find out that he had intended to bring some millet porridge for Qin Chengxi. Mu Yu then told him that she and Qin Jinhuan were about to head over to visit her.
Qin Xiaozhi was glad to hear this. He left the flask on the table and got the couple to have their breakfast before they went out. After a simple breakfast, Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan brought the flask of millet porridge over to Fraternity Hospital.
When they got out of the car, Mu Yu shoved the thermos flask into Qin Jinhuan’s arms. “You can go visit Xi first; I’ll join you later,” she hastily uttered. When Qin Jinhuan asked her where she was headed, Mu Yu had already sped off without responding to him.
