Chapter 233 Losing You Is Worse Than Losing My Reputation
“Huan? What brings you here?” Rong Jian was surprised as he welcomed Qin Jinhuan.
Having recognized Qin Jinhuan’s voice, Mu Yu didn’t turn around as she pretended to be thirsty and walked over to the water dispenser.
“Darling, be careful not to burn your hands. Let me pour it for you.” Qin Jinhuan rushed over and grabbed the paper cup in front of her with a flattering smile.
Mu Yu turned away with an emotionless expression before sitting down on the sofa.
Since Mu Yu had her back against him and because Rong Jian was so worried about the case, he did not notice anything unusual between the couple. He eagerly followed behind Qin Jinhuan and asked urgently, “Why do you say so?”
He had called Qin Jinhuan in the morning to talk about Feng Rubing—ever since the incident with Kiki, he was quite impressed with Qin Jinhuan’s ability to analyze the case. This time, the suspect was his own beloved woman; Feng Rubing seemed to have a lot of unknown secrets, so he could only turn to the person he trusted the most to help him solve the case.
“Here’s your cup of water.”
As Qin Jinhuan fawned over Mu Yu and presented the cup of water in front of her, he felt a little embarrassed when she didn’t accept it. Not wanting to make himself look too bad, he placed it on the coffee table and mumbled, “It’s too hot anyway; you can drink it when it’s cooler.”
The thought of him refusing to fire Yin Anran infuriated Mu Yu as she tried to ignore him, but she didn’t want to humiliate Qin Jinhuan either; a few seconds later, she picked the cup up before blowing at it to cool the water down. She continued to ignore Qin Jinhuan.
“Be careful, it’s still hot.” Qin Jinhuan sat down obediently beside her and turned toward Rong Jian. “What did you just ask me?”
Rong Jian assumed that he was just showing off his affection toward Mu Yu and didn’t think too much about it as he replied in a serious tone, “Under the premise that I’m well-aware of Rubing’s past, why do you think that fabricating the video of Qiqi bathing is uncalled for?”
“That’s because…” Qin Jinhuan deliberately dragged his tone as he glanced at Mu Yu. He was trying to attract her attention, but she didn’t even bat an eyelid. It made him feel quite embarrassed.
“Because of what?” Rong Jian pressed on anxiously.
Qin Jinhuan sighed and withdrew his gaze as he answered, “From what I can remember, you mentioned that Feng Rubing begged you several times not to pursue her past affairs, right?”
He continued as Rong Jian nodded, “Furthermore, the shocking past that she went through years ago was described by her alone and not from the results of your investigation, correct?”
“Yes!” Just then, Rong Jian seemed to have realized something as he asked in surprise, “You don’t think it’s credible?”
Qin Jinhuan was secretly pleased when he noticed Mu Yu glancing at him. He replied sheepishly, “I think she’s very untrustworthy.”
Rong Jian was stunned for a while as he shook his head in disbelief. “Is it really necessary for Rubing to make up such a tragic story to deceive me?”
In the end, Mu Yu couldn’t hold back as she asked, “What’s your reason for not trusting her?”
“The reason is…” Qin Jinhuan sat down next to her. He took the cup from Mu Yu’s hands naturally and had a few sips of water. When he realized that they were both staring at him, he looked at Rong Jian and asked nonchalantly, “If Feng Rubing hadn’t told you about that incident, do you think you would’ve known about it?”
Rong Jian pondered for a while before shaking his head. “Her headroom teacher at Linhe First Middle School, close friends and old neighbors were completely unaware about this incident. Besides, I wouldn’t have possibly known about it if she didn’t tell me herself. After all, her grandmother is dead.”
When he was in Linhe County, Rong Jian had contacted two of Feng Rubing’s closest female classmates in junior high and high school with the help of Gu Lihao. He wanted to ask them about Feng Rubing’s transfer, but both of them had no idea why she transferred, saying that Feng Rubing’s family never bid goodbye to either one of them when they moved out of Linhe County. Since then, they lost touch with the family. After going through much trouble, Rong Jian managed to contact the Feng Family’s old neighbors in Linhe County, but they also had no idea where her family had moved to. In fact, they were very surprised to hear that Feng Rubing was still alive.
“Our two families had been old neighbors for many years. After Rubing’s parents passed away, we contributed as much as we could and tried to take care of them. When we heard that she was ill, we quietly gave her grandmother some money for her treatment. Later on, we even went around and asked everyone for help after finding out that they wanted to sell their house to fund her treatment. Eventually, they found a rich and compassionate buyer for the house. After our persuasion, the buyer did not ask for a bargain and gave her an extra 10,000 instead; it wasn’t a small amount of money back then! Once her grandmother got the money, she took Rubing and left Linhe County without even saying goodbye to us. We didn’t think too much of it, though—we thought that she was in a hurry to go for treatment, but we never heard from them ever since. After a while, we just assumed that Rubing died of that illness and her grandmother had passed away in a town somewhere. We often regret that we could have done more to help them, but now that we know Rubing is actually alive and well, where is their conscience?!”
The old neighbors’ words were filled with resentment at Feng Rubing’s heartless conscience, and it rang in Rong Jian’s ears.
Qin Jinhuan didn’t know what was playing in Rong Jian’s mind as he continued, “Besides, I think that her encounter has no substantial connection to Li Jianyun’s case. In other words, even if she really had that unfortunate encounter, she isn’t obliged to tell you every detail about it.”
Mu Yu grew impatient with Qin Jinhuan’s habit of beating around the bush as she snapped and said, “Can you just cut to the chase? Why can’t you just summarize and talk in a concise manner?”
“Not to hurry, Darling.” Qin Jinhuan smiled weakly. When he saw that she had turned her face away, he stopped fooling around and cleared his throat. “First of all, I think that my wife’s theory about Li Jianyun knowing Feng Rubing for more than 10 years is quite reasonable. Second of all, I think that Feng Rubing is hiding something from that incident back when she was 15 or 16 years old; she might’ve experienced something out of the ordinary, but it’s probably not like what she had described to you. According to her story, she had been living with a man and his two wives for a long time; her grandmother even had several arguments with the man’s spouses. It is impossible to keep something like that a secret—people are very sensitive when it comes to these things, and some might even want to enjoy the show. We don’t know what exactly happened to her, but perhaps Li Jianyun knew and had been blackmailing her with it. The actual truth of the incident might not be as simple as Feng Rubing losing her reputation, but it must be something so serious and terrible to the point where she didn’t even dare to inform the police when she was at the police station. As for the fake video she made of Feng Qiqi, she just wants to divert your attention and keep you from uncovering the truth she’s hiding from you.”
Utterly horrified, Mu Yu asked, “Is there anything more terrible than losing one’s reputation?”
“Of course.”
“What’s that?”
Qin Jinhuan smiled warmly at her. “For me, losing my reputation is not as terrible as losing you.”
Mu Yu usually felt touched by his words, but because she was still annoyed at him, his words seemed fake and showy to her as she rolled her eyes at him.
Mu Yu ignored Qin Jinhuan’s hurt expression as she analyzed and said, “In order to cover up the truth that she is desperately trying to hide, Madam Feng risked her innocence to be a suspect of a murder case. Now, she is risking her reputation to bear the notoriety of being the mistress who destroyed someone’s family. Besides protecting Qiqi, I can’t think of any other person or matter that is worth sacrificing herself like this.”
Rong Jian smiled bitterly. “It looks like we’re back to square one.”
“Qiqi…” An idea flashed through Mu Yu’s mind as she stood up abruptly. “Chief Rong!”
“Hey! Be careful!”
While he sat next to her, Qin Jinhuan hadn’t been paying attention when she knocked over the paper cup in his hand. He quickly grabbed her arm and asked anxiously, “Did you burn yourself?”
Mu Yu wiped off the water from her body while she gave him an indignant look.
The water in the cup had cooled off for a while, so there was no danger of getting burned. Mu Yu felt that his concern was so exaggerated that it seemed like he was acting.
“You didn’t burn yourself, did you?” Although he had also guessed that the water in the cup was no longer hot, Rong Jian still expressed his concern.
“No, the water is already cool,” replied Mu Yu pleasantly.
“Alright then. By the way, what were you going to say just now, Yu?” Compared to Qin Jinhuan, Rong Jian was more concerned about the case.
“Uhh…” Mu Yu scratched her head and thought hard about it. Finally, she gave up and cried out, “I’ve forgotten! I had something important to say, but I just can’t seem to remember what exactly it was about.”
Rong Jian urged, “Think about it again!”
Mu Yu sat down and held her head as she thought carefully for a while, but she still couldn’t remember what she was going to say. Feeling very frustrated, she took her anger out on Qin Jinhuan instead.
“It’s all your fault! You’re so clumsy that you can’t even hold a cup of water properly!”
Knowing that she was angry, Qin Jinhuan remained silent as he sighed and shrugged his shoulders helplessly at Rong Jian.
Rong Jian was frustrated as well, but he good-naturedly comforted Mu Yu as he played the phone recording to Qin Jinhuan, hoping that he would be able to hear some clues and point them out to him.
He admitted that Feng Rubing’s sudden illness yesterday and the story she had told him managed to disrupt his thoughts; it had turned him into a nervous wreck. Together with the lack of rest from last night, his brain was currently in a mess and he needed the clarity of a bystander.
Qin Jinhuan listened intently and asked, “Did Feng Rubing ask Li Jianyun out that night?”
“No,” said Rong Jian. He explained that Feng Rubing had taken several similar calls from Li Jianyun before.
“If she didn’t ask him out… and didn’t kill him…” Qin Jinhuan muttered as he pondered.
Mu Yu was pretending to be angry throughout the entire time, but her eyes lit up all of a sudden as she exclaimed, “Could it be that someone faked Madam Feng’s name to call Li Jianyun and asked to meet at the crime scene?!”
Qin Jinhuan nodded with approval. “Not maybe, but definitely. That person would be the real murderer.”
Mu Yu temporarily forgot about being mad and chimed in excitedly, “When Li Jianyun called back, the murderer could’ve spied on him while hiding in a corner! He didn’t show up at the appointed time nor did he kill Li Jianyun; he wanted to wait for Li Jianyun to call Madam Feng just to frame her!”
Qin Jinhuan nodded. “The murderer knew about Feng Rubing and Li Jianyun’s relationship; he was also aware of Feng Rubing’s sister and the conflict between them. He had planned this murder for a while—even the virus in Qiqi’s computer might be his doing too. He wanted to lure Feng Rubing out in order to frame her better.”
Their conversation got Rong Jian all worked up. “I have two things to do right now; one is to re-investigate all the people who had come into contact with Li Jianyun before the crime as well as visit all his social relations again. Secondly, I’d have to investigate Li Jianyun’s earlier interactions with Rubing!”
“Wait, Chief Rong!” Mu Yu shouted as she tried to stop Rong Jian from rushing out. “Listen to me!”
