My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 227
Chapter 227 The Consequences of Impulsiveness
Mu Yu looked at the door with bewilderment as Qin Jinhuan habitually protected her by pulling her behind him.
“What’s going on?” Rong Jian asked as he ran to the door.
“It’s just a misunderstanding! It’s just a misunderstanding!”
Mu Yu breathed a sigh of relief when she heard Liu Xiaofan’s voice. “It’s just Officer Liu.”
Both Bian Zijun and Huang Bo knew Liu Xiaofan; why would they stop him?
While Qin Jinhuan was still in shock, Rong Jian had already opened the door and looked outside.
When Liu Xiaofan saw Rong Jian, he rushed over to introduce him. “Chief Rong, this is the new member of our bureau, Director He.”
When Qin Jinhuan saw the man introduced by Liu Xiaofan, it was then he understood the reason Bian Zijun had stopped them from coming in.
Rong Jian was surprised to see He Xinmin as he asked, “Director He, are you here to see Rubing?”
He knew that his boss wasn’t here for him.
“No.” He Xinmin smiled embarrassingly. “I was entrusted by the Director Gu to deal with the matter of you speeding on the highway. The traffic department had reported it to the police.”
“I see.” Rong Jian was not surprised as he nodded to show cooperation. “What do I need to do?”
Rong Jian’s straightforwardness had made He Xinmin a little awkward as he explained in a flurry, “Don’t misunderstand; I’m not here to prosecute you for your mistakes. It’s just that since there was a police report made, we would need to follow procedures. After all, you have broken so many rules that it’s hard for us to completely sweep it under the rug.”
“I know. I understand.” Rong Jian expressed his understanding. “What’s the deal? Penalty points? A fine? Or do I have to be detained?”
“Hey! What do you mean, detained? We’re policemen—we don’t arrest one of our own.” Liu Xiaofan turned around and smiled warmly. “Director He, didn’t Director Gu inform you of the urgent matter that Chief Rong had with Doctor Feng? So it was quite understandable that he would drive faster than usual. Besides, he didn’t hit anyone nor affect the order of traffic. We don’t have to be so serious, right?”
He Xinmin appeared uneasy. “Liu, I don’t want to make this into a serious issue, but—”
“I know, I know. You need to report back as well. How about this—you slap him with a hefty fine, and after that, Chief Rong and I will take you out for a meal.”
“Even without detaining him, in order to answer to my superiors, I would still need to give him a fine and have his license revoked.”
“Well, how do you expect him to work cases if his driver’s license is suspended? There are still 3 unsolved cases waiting for him to solve! Or does the bureau have plans to follow him 24 hours a day?” Liu Xiaofan shrugged his shoulders. “Director He, I’m going to put this out there first—if the bureau is not going to pay me extra overtime fees, I will not follow Chief Rong 24 hours a day! I haven’t found a girlfriend yet, so my time is very precious!”
He Xinmin was speechless by his words as he stammered out, “I-I can’t call the shots about that.”
“If it has to be suspended, then so be it.” Rong Jian swiftly handed over his driver’s license to He Xinmin. “Just let me know how much the fine would be, and I’ll go and pay it tomorrow.”
As He Xinmin was about to take his driver’s license, Qin Jinhuan came over and snatched it away.
“Huan…”
“I’ll take care of this. Don’t bother.” Qin Jinhuan threw the driver’s license back at him.
Rong Jian caught the driver’s license and tried to hand it over to He Xinmin again. “Don’t make things difficult for Director He.”
Qin Jinhuan ignored him as he stared at He Xinmin and spoke faintly. “Go back and tell Director Gu that I’ll handle this matter, and I’ll bear all the consequences.”
“Sigh, sure.” He Xinmin sighed.
Although he had just arrived, He Xinmin had already heard of Qin Jinhuan. When he heard Qin Jinhuan’s words, He Xinmin, who was secretly anxious about the situation, felt instantly relieved, and he left shortly after he asked about Feng Rubing’s condition.
After He Xinmin left, Liu Xiaofan muttered unhappily, “Chief Rong, how could Director Gu do this? Normally, he praised you and held you in such high regards, but now that you’re in trouble, he abandoned you and sent in a new leader who is all about doing things by the book! Isn’t this an attempt to make things difficult for you?”
Rong Jian sighed. “You’ve misunderstood Director Gu; he was just trying to protect me.”
“Protect you? With a fine and a suspended license? How is that a form of protection?”
Qin Jinhuan interjected softly, “That’s because you didn’t know what he actually did on the highway. He’s actually gotten off lightly.”
Instantly, Liu Xiaofan was curious. “Huh? Chief Rong, what did you do on the highway? Don’t tell me you molested a female traffic police! Then these punishments would be the consequences for your impulsiveness.”
When he realized Rong Jian was ignoring him, he lost interest in teasing him and quickly smiled as he explained, “Chief Rong, don’t take it personally; I was just kidding.”
Mu Yu was not in the mood for jokes as she commented in a serious tone, “I’m guessing that Director Gu must know Director He really well; that’s why he sent Director He here to handle the problem.”
After Mu Yu’s comment, realization dawned upon Liu Xiaofan as he stated, “No wonder Director He has been inquiring with me about the background of all the bureau colleagues. He seems to know his way around here; no wonder he kept smiling at you, Chief Rong. Oh! That’s not right—if he really did want to suck up to you, then he shouldn’t have insisted on punishing you.”
Mu Yu felt sorry for He Xinmin, who was caught between a rock and a hard place. “If even Director Gu thought that this matter was problematic, then it must be the traffic police who were making things difficult for the police, and as the bureau’s new leader, Director He had to consider things from all different angles for the best solution. In order to resolve the matter and, at the same time, not offend Chief Rong, he had to give Rong Jian a symbolic punishment. It seems that Director He has it quite rough as well.”
“He has to be punished. Otherwise, he wouldn’t take his life seriously and let the traffic police chase after him, as if they were his fans. Huan, leave this matter alone and let him learn his lesson.”
Rong Ying’s sudden sarcastic remarks embarrassed Rong Jian as he spoke to her with an awkward smile. “Ying, it’s so late now; why haven’t you gone back to rest?”
She glared at him. “Well, I’m here to check on your patient.”
After that, she went directly into Feng Rubing’s ward.
“Oh! Doctor Feng is in this ward? I think I’ve made a mistake.”
Liu Xiaofan wanted to follow Rong Ying into Feng Rubing’s ward but was pulled back by Rong Jian. “Didn’t you hear the doctor say that she was going to check the patient?”
Liu Xiaofan looked at him with a disgruntled look. “The fact that she is going to check her room and me visiting Doctor Feng has nothing to do with each other! It’s not as though Doctor Feng would be naked during the check-ups!”
Rong Jian stopped him. “That’s enough. You should go and rest. Help me pay the fine tomorrow and take care of Director He for me.”
“I can pay the fine for you, but how am I supposed to take care of Director He?”
“Figure it out yourself.”
When Liu Xiaofan realized Rong Jian was getting irritated, he stopped talking before he waved the crowd goodbye and left while yawning.
Then, Rong Jian also turned around. “Huan, you should take Yu back to rest. I want to stay here and accompany Rubing.”
Qin Jinhuan nodded. “Pass me the contact information of Feng Rubing’s old neighbor, and I’ll find someone to go over to investigate it for you.”
He knew that as long as Feng Rubing was still sick, Rong Jian would not have the heart to leave An City.
Rong Jian hesitated. “I’m worried that Rubing might have some secrets that she wouldn’t want people to know—”
“Then I’ll get Zijun to go.”
“Zijun has to protect you and Yu—”
“Don’t be so fussy.”
“Huan—”
Qin Jinhuan ignored Mu Yu’s pleas as he grabbed her hand and headed out.
“Hey! Huan!” Rong Jian shouted hastily. “The contact information is saved in my cell phone. I’ll send it to you when my phone is fully charged.”
“Send it to Zijun,” Qin Jinhuan replied without looking back as he dragged Mu Yu into the elevator.
Mu Yu looked at the closing elevator door with exasperation as she complained softly, “Chief Rong is in a miserable situation now. Would it kill you to speak to him more politely?”
“So he wouldn’t be miserable if I was polite to him?”
She faltered and glared at him with annoyance. “But Chief Rong is your friend!”
“Would I have been here in the middle of the night if he wasn’t my friend?”
“You… Hmph! I’m ignoring you,” Mu Yu huffed as she turned her face away.
“It’s alright. I can still talk to you.” Qin Jinhuan smiled as he put his arm around her shoulder, which was later shrugged off by Mu Yu. He tried again a few times and met with the same results.
Both Bian Zijun and Huang Bo, who were also in the elevator, pretended to not see anything and turned their faces away as they tried hard to not laugh.
As they left the elevator, Qin Jinhuan picked the precise moment to catch her hand and gave her a smug look as he guided her toward the car.
Mu Yu had been feeling unwell because she was having her menstruation cycle. Besides, the cold she had the day before and the shock from the accident had left her completely exhausted. She was merely holding on because of Feng Rubing’s incident. When Rong Jian rushed back to take care of Feng Rubing, she was so relieved that as soon as she sat in the car, she fell asleep next to Qin Jinhuan. Qin Jinhuan felt bad for her as he gently moved her and positioned her into a comfortable position. He then tenderly looked at her sleeping appearance.
When they got home, he gently carried her into the room because he was afraid of waking her. He put her to bed without undressing her and carefully wiped her face and feet with hot water. After that, he cleaned himself before holding her hands while hugging her and fell asleep next to her.
When they left, Rong Ying was checking Feng Rubing’s condition at her ward while Rong Jian was watching intently from the side. After Rong Ying had made sure Feng Rubing was fine, she left after telling Rong Jian to let the patient rest and not to provoke her.
Meanwhile, Feng Rubing had woken up and was not surprised to see Rong Jian as she smiled faintly as a form of greeting—she had no idea that Rong Jian had gone to her hometown to investigate her.
When he saw her licking her dry lips, Rong Jian quickly leaned down and asked gently, “Would you like some water?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll pour some for you.”
Rong Jian turned around and poured a glass of hot water for her. He held the glass in his hand and blew it to cool down its temperature. When he noticed Feng Rubing struggling to get up, he signaled her not to move. “Wait for a while; the water is still hot.”
“Where’s the nurse?”
“You’re looking for the nurse?” When he realized that Feng Rubing’s expression was off, he put an embarrassing expression. “You want to go to the toilet?”
He wanted to pick a perfect time to ask her some questions, so he had sent away the nurse Rong Ying had arranged for her when he entered the ward earlier.
Feng Rubing’s face turned red as she nodded gently.
“Let me help you to the toilet.”
“I should be able to go by myself.” Feng Rubing pushed him away as she slowly got out of bed.
She had already finished the fluid infusion, and her fever had gone down. But because the state of her body was still quite weak, and she’d had almost nothing to eat for the last few days, her feet were weak and wobbly.
Fearing she might fall, Rong Jian helped her and only let her go when they got to the bathroom, despite her objections.
Shortly after that, Feng Rubing came out of the bathroom. Rong Jian rushed over to support her again.
“Achoo!”
“Be careful not to catch a cold!” Rong Jian said while quickly pulling out a napkin from his pocket. He panicked when he realized there was something in the napkin and tried to take it back, but it was too late. Feng Rubing clutched it tightly in her hands as she stared at him with shock and anger.
