My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 221
Chapter 221 A Confession in the ICU
“She’s in the emergency room?! What happened?!” Qin Jinhuan exclaimed in shock. “Which hospital is she at?”
“It was a car accident! She’s at Town Hospital!” Mu Ziyao cried.
Hu Meiling felt her gaze becoming blurry as she slapped herself on her thighs in agony. “My God! My baby Yu!”
“Meiling!” Mu Ziyao steadied his wife quickly, but he then lost his grip on his phone. The screen turned black immediately after it smashed onto the ground. The words ‘car accident’ echoed in Qin Jinhuan’s head—he could no longer care for Hu Meiling or anyone else right then. Instead, he charged toward Bian Zijun. “Take care of them!” he said before getting into his own car and howled at Huang Bo. “Head to Town Hospital! Hurry!”
“Yes, Boss!’ Huang Bo stepped on the gas immediately.
“Hey! Wait for us! We want to go too!” Hu Meiling shoved her husband away as she began to chase the car.
“We’ll take this car instead!” Bian Zijun shouted as he pulled onto Hu Meiling’s arm. “We have another car here, Meiling!” Mu Ziyao quickly picked up his broken phone before he pointed toward Cheng Xiang’s car, who was driving toward them.
“H-Hurry, let’s go!” Hu Meiling pushed Bian Zijun aside before she jumped into Cheng Xiang’s car along with Mu Ziyao. Once they were in the car, she began to howl and cry for Mu Yu between sobs. Her hands were clasped together as she prayed to God. Mu Ziyao straightened himself and stuck his neck out to see Huang Bo’s car getting farther and farther away from them. Despite his anxiousness, he didn’t dare to hurry Cheng Xiang, so he simply clenched tightly onto the sides of the driver’s seat in front of him.
“Buckle up,” Cheng Xiang uttered before he began to accelerate, catching up with Huang Bo’s car. In the other vehicle, Qin Jinhuan was the most anxious he had ever been; he kept rushing Huang Bo as he was desperate to be by Mu Yu’s side immediately. Huang Bo, who was also worried about Mu Yu, was extremely focused as he maneuvered the car left and right in order to reach their destination as soon as possible. Despite his efforts, they still took 30 minutes to reach the front entrance of Town Hospital due to the rather heavy traffic on the roads.
Before the car came to a full stop, Qin Jinhuan jumped out of it. “Over here, Young Master Qin!” A middle-aged man with glasses quickly greeted him once he arrived.
“You’re…” Qin Jinhuan was puzzled.
“I’m Qiao Zijian, the director of Town Hospital. Director Rong was the one who called me,” he explained.
Qin Jinhuan, who had been extremely worried about Mu Yu’s condition when he was stuck in the car, gave Rong Ying a call as he was on the way to the hospital. He knew that Fraternity Hospital was the most well-known hospital in the whole of An City when it came to their technology and staff members. After Rong Ying heard about Mu Yu’s accident, she quickly gave Qiao Zijian a call.
“How’s my wife now?” Qin Jinhuan asked.
“Well… I don’t know how to tell you this. You should take a look at her yourself, Young Master Qin. Madam Qin is in the ICU right now.” Qiao Zijian quickly showed Qin Jinhuan the way to Mu Yu’s ward as he spoke. Upon hearing the term ‘ICU’, Qin Jinhuan felt his scalp turning numb and his legs turning wobbly. However, he tried his best to remain calm. “Did they send people from Fraternity Hospital over yet?” he asked.
“They’re on the way right now, and they should be arriving soon.”
“Do you know how the accident happened?” Qin Jinhuan continued questioning the director.
“My apologies, for I’m not too sure about this. I heard that Madam Qin was hit by an eight-wheeler truck filled with gravel. It was traveling in the wrong direction on the road,” the director said.
An eight-wheeler truck filled with gravel?! Qin Jinhuan took a deep breath of the cold air around him as his gaze began to fill with hatred and anger. That b*stard of a driver. I’m going to chop him into eight pieces myself!
“The ICU’s at the end of the hallway.” Upon hearing Qiao Zijian’s words, Qin Jinhuan immediately ran toward the room. Once he pushed the door open, he saw a patient lying on the bed, her entire body wrapped up in bandages. She looked exactly like an Egyptian mummy—the only thing exposed were her two eyes. Qin Jinhuan froze on the spot as if he had just been struck by lightning; he simply couldn’t believe that Mu Yu was the one lying in bed.
“H-Huan…” a weak yet extremely familiar voice sounded. The ‘mummy’ was the one speaking, and Qin Jinhuan felt as if he had just fallen into a dark, cold lake the moment he recognized the voice of the ‘mummy’. His entire body began to tremble uncontrollably, and his feet felt like they were nailed into the ground as he simply couldn’t bring himself to take a single step closer.
He only snapped out of his shock when he heard Mu Yu’s soft cries. He quickly leapt over to the bed as he helplessly held onto her only hand that wasn’t wrapped up in bandages. He attempted to call her name, but he couldn’t find the strength to make the slightest noise; it was as if a curse had been placed on him.
“Huan… Am I going to… die?” she gasped weakly.
“No!” The room was filled with his loud howl, and everything that he had held within him seemed to burst out like the force of water gushing out of a broken dam. “You can’t die! You won’t die! We just started our lives together; how dare you die just like that? No! Stop talking nonsense! I won’t let you die!” he cried emotionally.
“Really?”
“Yes! Really!” He choked on his tears as he held onto her hand tightly.
Mu Yu continued sobbing as she shook her head slightly. “I don’t think I can last much longer. My entire body hurts so bad.”
“You have to hang on! Ying’s almost here! You have to trust her; she’ll make you feel better!” he urged.
“I’m afraid even Ying might not be able to help me this time…” she muttered.
“Mu Yu! I’m going to get mad if you start saying things like that! Things are going to get bad if I get angry!” he threatened. She simply remained silent as she fixed her gaze on him.
“I still have a copy of our agreement! You’d be breaching the agreement if you die; do you know how much you’ll have to pay me then?!” he continued.
She smiled bitterly at his words. “How am I supposed to pay you when I’m dead?”
“Your parents will have to pay for it! If you die, I’ll make sure your parents go bankrupt and homeless! Therefore, you’re not allowed to die!” He spoke as if he were giving stern orders, but his eyes looked like he was begging her desperately.
“Look at me now. Even if I don’t die, what if I end up being paralyzed?” she asked.
“I’ll be your hands and your legs; I’ll take care of you!” he insisted.
“Look at my face. What if it’s completely ruined?”
Qin Jinhuan gently reached forward to touch her bandaged face as he gazed deeply into her eyes. “As long as you can be by my side for the rest of my life, I don’t care about your looks at all.”
“Are you sure you can accept me like this?” she asked.
He looked a little hurt by her words. “Do I look like a man who only cares about a woman’s appearance?”
Mu Yu continued to look at him with tears in her eyes. As she blinked, her tears trickled from the corner of her eyes. Before he could reach out to dry her tears, the droplets rolled across the side of her face and were absorbed by her bandages. He felt his heart shattering into pieces at the sight of this.
“Why didn’t you come for me at 12.00PM just now?” she asked between sobs.
He held onto her hand; his heart ached immensely as he explained himself and said, “I lost track of the time as I was too immersed in writing my apology to you.”
“You didn’t even pick my call up,” she continued.
“I didn’t do that intentionally! I couldn’t hear my phone ringing as I switched it to silent mode! It’s all my fault; I forgot to get Zijun and Secretary Zhi to remind me of the time!” He continued to plead. “I promise that I’ll never make such mistakes again, but you have to promise me that you’ll get better, okay?”
Mu Yu only cried harder at this point. “I thought you were just going to meet me at the Bureau of Civil Administration.”
“How is that even possible?!” He glared at her. “Why don’t you trust my love for you?!”
“You repeatedly went out in the middle of the night to spend time with another woman; how can you ask me to trust your love for me?!”
“Anran and I are really…” he started.
“Yin Anran!” she cried at the top of her voice.
“Okay, okay. Yin Anran. Don’t get all worked up and move around so much.” He quickly attempted to calm her down.
“I don’t want to hear you calling her Anran in the future!” Mu Yu insisted.
“Okay, okay. I won’t call her that again. Don’t get angry, alright?”
“I don’t want you to meet her at night either!”
“Okay! I’ll never go looking for her ever again! Never!” As he spoke, he nervously glanced out of the ICU ward. “What’s taking Ying so long?”
“I want you to fire her! I’d never be able to die in peace if I imagine her pestering you,” Mu Yu threatened. Qin Jinhuan felt his soul leaving his body the minute he heard her talking about dying. “Okay, okay. I’ll fire her. As long as you get better, I’ll fire her immediately,” he offered.
“Do you love me, Huan?”
“Of course!” he answered without any hesitation.
“But you’ve made me so sad recently,” she mumbled as she began to cry again.
“No, don’t cry! It’s all my fault; I made a mistake. As long as you get better, you can punish me however you want to!” He desperately wanted to bring her into his arms, but he was afraid that he’d hurt her even more. He had no choice but to stare at her helplessly.
“Did you finish writing your 5000-word report?” she asked with a sniff.
“Yes!” He quickly pulled the sheets of paper out from his pocket.
“Do you have 5000 words?” she asked.
“I wrote 6000 words!”
“I don’t believe you,” she muttered.
“It’s true!” He quickly flipped through the pages filled with his words as he showed them to her. “I’ve counted; there are 20 rows on a piece of paper and 20 boxes in each row, so it’s 400 words per paper. I wrote a total of 14 pages and 7 rows.” He grinned at this point. “I wanted to finish all 15 pages before meeting you, but Secretary Zhi rushed in when I was at the 7th line of my 14th page. It was then that I realized it was past 12.00PM.” His expression turned into one of regret as he continued to say, “I’m so sorry, Yu. I made a mistake; I…”
“Read it out to me. I want to hear it,” she said.
“Okay! I’ll read it for you!” Without any hesitation, he quickly began to read off his handwritten letter. However, he stole glances at her every time he finished a sentence as he was afraid that she would accidentally ‘fall asleep’ and die. After every three sentences, he glanced out of the ICU ward, hoping that Rong Ying would appear and bring Mu Yu over to receive better treatment at Fraternity Hospital. But as he continued to read, he realized that something seemed a little odd. His voice got softer and softer, and he eventually lowered his paper to stare at Mu Yu.
Once she knew that she was exposed, Mu Yu no longer tried to pretend. She sat up and began to rip her bandages off. Qin Jinhuan didn’t help her with it; instead, he simply glared at her with a puzzled expression on his face.
“Did you really hope for me to be lying on this bed forever?” she asked.
“How badly are you actually injured?!” He didn’t reply to her question. Instead, he asked her the question that was bothering him the most; his voice loud as he did so.
“You’re scolding me again.” She pouted her lips and lowered her head.
“This isn’t about me scolding you! Answer me. How bad are your injuries?!”
“It’s nothing much. Just a few bruises.” Mu Yu tore the bandages off her face to reveal several band-aids around her skin.
Qin Jinhuan glared at her with a look of disbelief. “How could you only sustain such minor injuries after getting hit by an eight-wheeler truck filled with gravel?”
“It wasn’t an eight-wheeler. It was just a car that hit the rear end of my car,” she muttered.
“But Director Qiao…”
“I was the one who told him to lie to you. You can blame me for that.” Mu Yu successfully took off all the bandages wrapped around her body.
It was then did Qin Jinhuan realize how ambiguous and uncertain Director Qiao had been with his words. He frowned. “Does that mean that Ying isn’t coming over?”
“Nope, she isn’t.”
He gritted his teeth after realizing how he had been fooled. “Do you think this is funny?” Mu Yu’s acting hadn’t been great, and there were a huge number of loopholes that could be found in the ICU itself if he had taken the time to pay attention to it. However, he had been too worried and afraid to take a good look around him. God knew how fearful he had been when he heard Mu Yu shifting her tone of voice from a weak one into a fluent, clear tone; he thought that she was experiencing terminal lucidity.
Mu Yu felt a little worried after seeing the angry look in his eyes. She knew that she had gone overboard with her joke, but she stubbornly stood her ground. “Well, whose fault is it for making me angry?”
“Humph!” He rolled his sleeves up and left the ward.
