My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 207
Chapter 207 Inappropriate Thoughts
Qin Jinhuan’s eyes widened. He stared at Wen Zeyu—the only person who was free to enter his office at all times—as the latter walked hastily toward him. “I just received some news from South City Factory; a lot of the workers have decided to leave their jobs in the end. The assembly line is slowing down, and it’s probably going to affect the rate at which we are manufacturing our products!” Wen Zeyu shook the stack of papers in his hand as he continued, “This might also impact our scheduled orders; based on our calculations, the amount of compensation required to pay off the liquidated damages might go up to several billion! Huan, why don’t we agree to the worker’s requests for now? Just so…”
“I want you to post up the recruitment advertisements for newcomers immediately.”
“I’m afraid it’ll take a while for us to find skilled, older workers who are familiar with the job! If we hire a lot of newbies, we’d have to give them basic training—it will influence our production rate as well!” Wen Zeyu went on with his long speech to advise Qin Jinhuan once again. “Don’t let your anger get the better of you, Huan. We should just go along with their requests for now. In the future, we can…”
“It’s just a few billion; we can afford that.” Qin Jinhuan interrupted.
“Huan! Why do you have to sacrifice such money for the sake of your temper?” exclaimed Wen Zeyu.
In return, Qin Jinhuan asked, “Do you think I’m sacrificing my money just because I’m throwing a tantrum?”
Stunned by this sudden question, Wen Zeyu sighed and said, “I know that you’ve been suspecting Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun as the ones behind this for a while. Even if they’re the ones who are creating such havoc, you don’t have to cause such huge financial losses for the company just because you don’t want them to feel like their plan succeeded! Furthermore, we don’t even have proof that they’re the ones behind everything.”
“It’s just a few billion.”
“It’s just a few billion, but it’s still a part of your own achievements! You need to know how to weigh your pros and cons here, alright? Don’t lose something larger over some petty issues!”
“I don’t need your advice on this,” Qin Jinhuan simply answered.
“Huan!”
“Get someone to put up those recruitment advertisements now.”
“You’re too stubborn!” Wen Zeyu shouted.
Qin Jinhuan only responded with a faint smile as he said, “So what if I’m a little stubborn sometimes? It’s not like I need that money desperately. Hurry up and put those advertisements out; I don’t want us to be stuck without doing anything.”
“You… Ugh! I really don’t know what to do with you!” Wen Zeyu heaved a large sigh and walked out helplessly.
Right then, Qin Jinhuan hastily dialed a number on the internal phone line once again, calling for Zhi Xiaoyin to come in. “I want you to prepare the compensation fees for the liquidated damages of all the orders that we’ve received in the past two weeks for all five of the South City Factories.”
“All of the orders in the past two weeks? All five of the factories?! That’s going to be a huge amount!” Zhi Xiaoyin was shocked to hear this. “Didn’t the South City Factory workers go back to their own positions?”
“Only some of them did so. Hurry up and get the sum of money prepared.”
“Boss.” Zhi Xiaoyin hesitated for a moment before she finally uttered, “Why are you paying the compensation fees instead of agreeing to the workers’ pay-raise? I’m certain that we’d be losing a lot more money with the first option!”
“That’s because I’m rich.”
“Well…” Zhi Xiaoyin didn’t have a comeback for his answer. Right before she was about to turn and leave, Qin Jinhuan spoke up again. “Try to be a little more high-profile as you’re preparing the money.”
“Are you saying…”
“Don’t ask too much about it.”
“Alright. In that case, I’ll go and get it prepared.” Zhi Xiaoyin had a brief understanding of the situation, so she left without nagging or asking anymore questions.
With that, silence filled the air in Qin Jinhuan’s sizeable office. He leaned against the back of his chair as he shut his eyes. Suddenly, the image of Yin Anran’s red and swollen eyes, the finger marks on her face and her bruised cheeks surfaced in his mind without any warning. He had taken care of her for the past ten years—spoiling her for the most part—because of the guilt he felt toward Yin Anjing. Naturally, as time went by, everything seemed to be a given; his care and love for her being an example of this.
This was the first time he had laid hands on her, and it was also the first time he had rejected her requests so heartlessly. He knew how she felt toward him; he had considered using his cold, heartless demeanor to destroy all her inappropriate thoughts, but he hadn’t expected himself to be so disoriented after slapping her in the face. Although he was angry about how she had provoked Mu Yu, he also knew that Yin Anran had always been thoughtful and considerate toward him when they were at work. She had helped him to resolve a large issue today, and she wasn’t even the one who started the fight—it was Mu Yu.
The minute he thought about Mu Yu, the tension near his eyebrows smoothed out and his lips curled into a slight smile. This silly girl finally knows how to protect her own status and identity, eh? Of course, he didn’t agree with her aggressive actions against Yin Anran. It wasn’t because he felt bad for Yin Anran—he knew that the latter was no weakling when it came to such things. If Mu Yu and Yin Anran went against one another without anyone watching, Mu Yu might not even get the upper hand in a fight.
He didn’t want to see his lover getting hurt at all. Although he cared for Yin Anran as well, he loved Mu Yu even more. Yin Anran… Based on how well he knew her, he guessed that she wouldn’t let go of this matter so easily after how Mu Yu had humiliated her today. In order to avoid another dispute between the two of them, he might have to get Mu Yu to keep her distance away from Yin Anran.
Finally, Qin Jinhuan opened his eyes and sat upright. He reached out for a folder beside him and pulled out a piece of paper that had the words ‘Dispatch List’ written on it. As he stared at it, Qin Jinhuan fell into deep thought for a long while.
…
At the same time, Mu Yu was lying flat on her soft and comfortable bed at home; her gaze was fixed on the ceiling of her room as she allowed herself to be caught up in a daydream. A few minutes ago, she had just received a call from Rong Jian. According to him, the Bureau placed great emphasis on Li Jianyun’s case and had just hosted an emergency meeting, asking them to solve the case before the Lunar New Year.
“Will they form another Special Investigation Unit for this?” she asked Rong Jian.
“Our seniors aren’t planning to investigate all three of these cases together as they are still considering the possibility of it being an impersonation of the first murder. In my opinion, they’re concerned that Qing Tian Group’s workers might be frightened if they were to investigate all three cases together, especially since all three of them involve the company.” Rong Jian sounded a little helpless as he spoke. After all, if it was true that someone had been copying another’s style of murder, it would mean that Feng Rubing was likely a murderer.
Mu Yu felt rather frustrated as she thought of how uncooperative Feng Rubing was. With the current proof they had, they couldn’t confirm that Li Jianyun’s case was tied to the previous two murder cases at all. If they wanted to clear Feng Rubing’s name, they had to start working from the third case. At the moment, Feng Rubing was the biggest suspect in Li Jianyun’s case. If Feng Rubing was just a regular suspect that they didn’t know personally, they would’ve probably treated her silence as her way of admitting to the crimes.
“I’m going to head over to Rubing’s hometown.”
“Where’s her hometown? Is it far? When are you heading over?” Mu Yu bombarded him with a few questions in a concerned manner, especially since the weather had been terrible for the past few days.
“It’s quite a distance—it’s a small county about a thousand miles away from An City. I’ve already bought the 6.00 PM train ticket.”
“6.00 PM? What about Qiqi’s birthday?” she asked.
“I’ll give her a call and explain everything to her. The snow has been melting for the past few days and the temperature’s still really low, Yu. You should rest at home; I’ll get Fan to pick you up if we need you to take a look at any new evidence.”
“But…” She began to protest.
“You’re ‘pregnant’ now, Yu. You can’t let Grandpa be worried about you all the time. Like I said—we’ll definitely contact you if we need your help,” said Rong Jian as he reassured her.
She was extremely touched by how thoughtful and understanding Rong Jian was, but she couldn’t stop herself from heaving a long sigh when she thought of how she hadn’t managed to help with his troubles at all.
Rong Jian then continued, “By the way, Yu—the Bureau is releasing Rubing for now as they don’t have enough evidence to detain her. However, she will be taking a break from work. I’m worried about her mental wellbeing; please pay her a visit on my behalf whenever you’re free. Don’t tell her that I’m heading to her hometown, though.”
Hearing this, Mu Yu thought of how she had promised to celebrate Qiqi’s birthday with her, so she asked, “Will Qiqi’s birthday still be celebrated at Ying’s place then?”
“I’ve asked Rubing about this, and she said that Qiqi can stay at Ying’s for a while; she even told me to tell Qiqi that she’s studying some course abroad. I guess she doesn’t want Qiqi to get worried after seeing how distressed and spiritless she is right now. Perhaps she’s also worried that she isn’t well enough to take care of Qiqi; after all, the little girl is injured now.”
“But it’s Qiqi’s birthday today. Wouldn’t it be suspicious if Madam Feng doesn’t visit her at all?”
“Qiqi was hoping that Rubing wouldn’t be picking her up earlier. Rubing doesn’t celebrate Qiqi’s birthday in general, and Ying had already planned to host a little party for Qiqi. The nurses are helping to decorate the area right now,” said Rong Jian.
“Oh, that’s great. Rong Jian, remember to let me know if you find anything new at Madam Feng’s hometown.”
“Alright, Yu. I need to go home and grab a change of clothes now.”
“Okay.”
After getting off her call with Rong Jian, Mu Yu continued to stare at the ceiling. She only snapped out of her daze when she was disrupted by a knock on the door.
“Are you asleep, Young Mistress?”
Once Mu Yu heard the voice that belonged to Li Xianglan, she quickly sat herself upright as she said, “I’m not asleep, Aunty Lan. Do come in.”
The door was then pushed open as Li Xianglan entered with a tray and a pleasant smile on her face. “Young Mistress, this is the chicken soup that Old Master ordered me to prepare for you.”
Mu Yu couldn’t suppress a bitter smile. “Chicken soup again? Didn’t I just drink this yesterday?”
“Today’s soup is a little different. The chicken used today is wild black-bone chicken; Old Master specifically ordered for someone to send it over from some faraway place. I’ve also added some Chinese herbs that’ll soothe the fetus and nourish your blood; it’s really good for you. Drink up while it’s hot! Don’t let Old Master’s efforts go to waste.” Li Xianglan smiled as she lifted the cover off the tureen of soup before handing Mu Yu a spoon.
“Oh, thanks.” Mu Yu took the spoon and began to drink it reluctantly. I still have to drink it, after all. However, this soup is pretty fresh indeed; it’s probably due to the wild chicken that was sent over from somewhere far.
Seeing how she licked her lips after finishing the soup, Li Xianglan then uttered, “There’s more in the pot downstairs; I can go get you another bowl of it.”
“No, no, no. It’s fine—it’s really fine. I’ve had enough, really.” Mu Yu immediately waved her arms around, indicating that she didn’t need more. I’m going to be excessively nourished if I continue consuming all these healthy products.
“Alright, you should continue resting then.” Li Xianglan cleaned everything up and brought the tray out of the room. Once she left, Mu Yu rubbed a palm against her full stomach before deciding that she’d take a walk to digest her food. She slipped into her slippers and shuffled over to the sliding glass doors by the balcony, pulling the curtains open. Once she saw that the thick layer of snow collected on the balcony hadn’t melted, she got extremely excited and immediately shoved the doors open. Elated, she bent down and began to gather snow to build a snowman.
“Oh dear! My little grandchild! Hurry up and come in! Come in!”
“Ah! Slow down, Boss! Be careful!”
Mu Yu was shocked to hear both Qin Xiaozhi and Yu Zhongguang’s voices booming from behind her. She turned around to see Qin Xiaozhi speed-walking toward her while using his cane for support. Worried that he might fall, she quickly stood herself up to help him. However, she hadn’t expected to slip as she moved. “Ah!” she cried.
“Watch out, Young Mistress!” Yu Zhongguang called out. Fortunately, Mu Yu had a pretty good balance and managed to steady herself despite fumbling a little after she slipped. She quickly rushed over to the anxious Qin Xiaozhi as she flashed a grin and said, “Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’m fine.”
“Why are you standing there? Hurry up and help Young Mistress in!” Qin Xiaozhi growled at Qi Hao furiously.
“Oh, right,” said Qi Hao as he stepped forward awkwardly. “It’s fine—I can walk in myself.” Mu Yu took a last, longing glance at the ‘snowman’ she had barely started building before she walked into the house listlessly.
“Hurry, hurry! Shut the windows tight! Increase the temperature on the heater!” Qin Xiaozhi ordered.
“Don’t get all worked up, Grandpa—I’m fine. Look, my hands are still warm.” Mu Yu rubbed her palms together and placed it in front of his face.
“You’re a pregnant woman now, so you have to be more careful than ever! It’s going to be too late for regrets if something bad happens!” Qin Xiaozhi then called for Qi Hao and said, “Go get Ying and hire a doctor for the Young Mistress’s body check-up…”
“It’s fine, Grandpa! I don’t need a check-up! I’m careful all the time.” Mu Yu deliberately put her palm over her stomach to make it seem as if she was extremely protective of the baby. “I’m the baby’s biological mother; how would I…”
Oh! Oh no!
