My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 203
Chapter 203 How Depressing
“Huan?!” Mu Yu was shocked to see Qin Jinhuan the moment she spun around. “What are you doing here?”
“I’m here to visit Qiqi,” he said with a smile as he stepped in.
“Wow! Huan!” In one swift motion, Feng Qiqi leaped into a standing position on top of her bed excitedly as she said, “Is this cake for me?”
“You’re the only one whose birthday is today; of course it’s for you.”
It was only then did Mu Yu notice the cake he was carrying in his hands. Surprised, she turned toward Rong Jian and asked, “Is it Qiqi’s birthday today?”
Rong Jian, who had felt guilty from the start, only felt worse when he remembered that it was the young girl’s birthday. “I’m sorry, Qiqi—I…”
“Hmph! I always knew that Huan cared for me more than you did!” Rejecting his apology, Qiqi simply jumped off her bed as she gleefully ran toward Qin Jinhuan.
“Watch out!” Mu Yu quickly edged forward to help the girl down. She finally understood why the young girl—known to be a tough cookie—had been acting so oddly just now. After all, she was still a child.
“I’m fine.” Feng Qiqi casually brushed her off and reached out to cling onto Qin Jinhuan’s arm with her uninjured hand. This act was followed by an intimate peck on his cheek as she exaggerated the smooching sound while doing so. “Huan, all my worries spent on your future marriage were worth it; you remembered to repay my acts of kindness, unlike someone else who’s heartless and unappreciative!” She shot a glare toward Rong Jian unmercifully.
The guilty man only put on a bitter smile as he said, “Actually, I got you a birthday present…”
“But you forgot that today’s my actual birthday! Hmph!”
Just then, Qin Jinhuan feigned a confused expression after placing the cake down. He looked toward Rong Jian and said, “You’re an odd one. You asked me to order the cake for Qiqi this morning; how could you have forgotten about it by noontime?”
“Are you saying that he was the one who told you to get the cake?” Feng Qiqi’s tone of voice seemed to have softened a little.
“Yes. He even asked me to order you a present.” As Qin Jinhuan spoke, Bian Zijun brought an enormous fox plushie into the room.
“Whoa! Yay!”
“Watch out for your arm!” Mu Yu nervously reminded Feng Qiqi yet again.
Meanwhile, the young girl had already brought the huge plush toy into her embrace as she cheered and jumped all around the room enthusiastically. “I love it! I’ve never seen a fox plush toy this huge before! It’s almost the same height as I am! Where did you get such a huge plush toy from, Huan?!”
“I didn’t buy this. He got me to order it specially for you.” Qin Jinhuan pointed toward Rong Jian before pointing back at the front pocket of the plush toy. “Check out what’s written there.”
The words ‘Happy Birthday, Qiqi!’ were printed on the front. Feng Qiqi, who had just spotted the unnoticed words on the plush toy, screamed in joy as she hugged the plushie and kissed it multiple times before turning to Rong Jian. She apologized to him and said, “I’m sorry, Rong Jian; I’ve misunderstood you!”
He replied smilingly, “As long as you like it.”
“Like it? I love it! I’m going to hug it to sleep every night from now onward! Thank you so much, Rong Jian, Huan and Mu Yu!”
Qin Jinhuan stifled a laugh as he said, “You should be calling her something else.”
Being the smart girl that she was, Feng Qiqi quickly changed the way she addressed Mu Yu as she said, “I love you, Mrs. Qin!”
With a laugh, Qin Jinhuan then said, “I was kidding—you can just call her Yu. Also, I’m the one who loves Mu Yu; you can continue loving your fox plushie.”
“Then… I’ll love your future baby. That’s okay, right?”
Zhang Yiming made an ‘okay’ hand gesture as he mimicked Feng Qiqi’s tone of voice. “Okay, okay, okay. Are you happy now?”
“Of course!” Feng Qiqi jumped in joy as she hugged the fox plushie tightly in her arms. All of a sudden, she pouted as she turned her gaze toward Rong Jian. “You’re going to be my brother-in-law someday, so you have to remember my birthday in the future!”
The term ‘brother-in-law’ triggered a bitter sensation in Rong Jian’s chest. Now that Feng Rubing was trapped in such a situation, no one even knew if she’d be able to prove her own innocence.
Mu Yu noticed the look on his face and hurriedly laughed as she interrupted their conversation. “Of course your brother-in-law will remember your birthday! Even if he forgets about it, your sister will definitely remind him!” She said this with the intention of hinting to Rong Jian that Feng Rubing was going to be fine, but Feng Qiqi, who didn’t understand the true meaning of her words, haughtily turned her face away as she scoffed and said, “All the spring blossoms would probably wilt before my sister celebrates my birthday for me! She hasn’t celebrated my birthday ever since she brought me over to An City! She’s either too busy or too forgetful to ever do it!”
Upon realizing the hint of loneliness and disappointment in the young girl’s gaze, Mu Yu quickly comforted her by saying, “Don’t worry. Your brother-in-law will definitely remember your birthday!”
With her head tilted sideways, Feng Qiqi glanced at Rong Jian as she asked, “Will you?” Qin Jinhuan, who stood right beside Rong Jian, secretly gave the man a slight pinch as he repeated Feng Qiqi’s question. “Are you going to make sure to remember Qiqi’s birthday from now on?”
“Yes, yes.” Rong Jian forced himself to smile at them.
Noticing his stiff grin, Feng Qiqi assumed that he was feeling insecure about his abilities to successfully go after her sister. The young girl steadily patted herself on the chest as she said, “Don’t you worry. I, Feng Qiqi, promise that you’re the only candidate I’ll ever approve as my brother-in-law! I always keep my promises…”
Knock, knock! Just then, the sound of someone knocking on the door interrupted Feng Qiqi’s attempt to make a promise. All of them turned around to see a lady in a white lab coat. Politely, she apologized before she asked, “Excuse me, but is this young lady here Feng Qiqi?”
Feng Qiqi responded just as politely as she said, “Yes, doctor.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Qiqi.” The lady doctor glanced around the room and spotted Rong Jian, whom she recognized. With a smile, she stepped forward to introduce herself. “It’s nice to meet you, Chief Rong; we’re the medical staff sent over by Director Rong to take special care of Qiqi. Has Director Rong contacted you yet?”
“I…” Coincidentally, Rong Jian’s phone rang at that moment. He immediately answered the call when he saw that it was his younger sister calling him. After a few responses, he ended the call and shifted his gaze toward Feng Qiqi as he explained the current situation. “The doctor said that you’ll have to rest your arm for a few days, but Ying is worried that your sister might not be able to take good care of you. Therefore, she has offered to send you over to her place instead.”
“Are you referring to her little villa in the hospital?”
“Yes. She also mentioned that she wants to celebrate your birthday with you as well.”
“Really?! That’s great!” Feng Qiqi cheered yet again. “All of you are so nice to me! I feel like I’m the luckiest girl in the world.”
“You’ll only get happier and happier from now on,” Mu Yu added with a grin.
“That’s for sure! I’m just waiting for Rong Jian to successfully date my sister right now.” Feng Qiqi abruptly turned toward Rong Jian as she whispered mysteriously, “Rong Jian, do you know what I wished for during the start of the year?”
“What did you wish for?” Rong Jian tried his best to control his emotions and played along with her.
“I wished for you and my sister to finally fall in love with one another! That way, I’ll get a nephew or niece soon.” Feng Qiqi flashed a joyous smile right after she finished speaking; she looked as though she was certain that her wish would come true. Everyone else exchanged glances before they all laughed along with her.
“Alright, let’s go. Ying’s waiting for you at home; I’ll go over to visit you at night.” Rong Jian smiled as he handed the cake over to a nurse who stood beside the doctor. He was about to take Feng Qiqi’s fox plushie away from her before she dodged his arm.
“I can hold onto it myself. I want to show it to Ying.” After she took two steps away from them, she hesitantly turned around and asked, “Huan, Mu Yu—will you guys come over to visit me at Ying’s place tonight?”
Qin Jinhuan was a little slower to respond, but Mu Yu immediately understood what the young girl meant as she quickly replied, “Of course. We’ll head over to celebrate your birthday at Ying’s tonight.”
“That’s great! Thank you, Yu!” Feng Qiqi sent a flying kiss to Mu Yu before she left along with the medical staff. Since Qin Jinhuan’s men were around, Rong Jian quickly arranged for Huang Bo to send Zhang Yiming back. Zhang Yiming felt bad as he had gotten Rong Jian’s car into an accident earlier, so he apologized repeatedly before offering to help out in any possible way in the future.
Once Zhang Yiming and Huang Bo left,Bian Zijun followed them out of the ward as well. The lively room fell silent immediately.
Sigh. Rong Jian could finally heave a long sigh without having to maintain his image in front of everyone else.
“We didn’t get anything from Qiqi. It seems like the idea of finding a loophole here was a mistake.”
“That’s not necessarily true.” Mu Yu referred to the little notebook that she had brought along with her and scribbled some notes before she put it away and asked, “Chief Rong, don’t you think Madam Feng is being a little too harsh toward Qiqi?”
Rong Jian’s gaze lit up as he said, “Do you mean…”
With a light nod, Mu Yu replied, “Madam Feng is sixteen years older than Qiqi, so she should be very loving toward her younger sister. In other words, Madam Feng has no reason not to be especially affectionate and protective toward her—Qiqi’s even being spoilt by us as well. Furthermore, they are the only two members left in their family and should be extremely dependent on one another; doesn’t it mean that they should have a tighter bond between them?”
In response to this, Rong Jian shook his head before he offered a differing opinion. “Rubing started taking care of Qiqi when she was five years old—that is when a child is at her most mischievous and playful age. Rubing isn’t just a sister to Qiqi; she’s also a parent, so she has to be especially strict toward her. I heard that your mother was pretty strict toward you as well—right, Yu?”
Mu Yu felt her scalp tingling at the thought of her own mother, who’d scold her for no reason at all. The woman simply smirked as she gave him an understanding gaze.
“Yu, what would you conclude if we assume that your hypothesis is correct?” Qin Jinhuan interjected their conversation after listening to it for a while.
She shrugged as she replied, “I don’t feel like my hypothesis is correct after hearing what Chief Rong has to say. My conclusion is probably unfounded as well.”
“That might not be true. What Rong Jian said was just his own idea of the situation.”
“Nonetheless, what Chief Rong said made sense to me. Perhaps I was being too…”
“Tell us about it, Yu. Huan’s right—what I said earlier was just my own hypothesis; we can’t make judgements based on it.” Rong Jian looked at her with a serious gaze.
Nodding, Mu Yu flipped her little notebook open and processed her thoughts for a while before she asked, “Chief Rong, how many years have you been going after Madam Feng?”
“What?” Stunned, Rong Jian asked, “Does this question hold any significance?”
“Yes, it does.”
Seeing how Mu Yu valued his response, he gave it some serious thought before he answered, “Although she’s one year younger than me, she started working two years earlier than me. I’ve liked Rubing ever since I first saw her, but I only started courting her about four years ago—it might’ve been five years. Regardless, it has been years now.”
“Has anyone else gone after her during this period of time?”
“No.” Rong Jian’s reply was instant this time. “She is quite a loner—unapproachable might be a better word—and she has a really small circle; they are mostly her family members and the people at school. Apart from her relationships at work, she seldom interacts with others—especially those of the opposite sex. This is one of the reasons why Qiqi’s so worried about her not being able to find a partner.”
“Has Madam Feng been rejecting you for the past four to five years?”
“I guess you could say that. Um…” Rong Jian hesitated a little before he continued, “Actually, I feel like she does care about me occasionally. Take the recent incident with Wang Linhua and his daughter for example; I felt extremely guilty and depressed after their death, so Rubing initiated a few text messages with me where she tried to give me some advice. I had an argument with our leader over the final decision of a case one day, and she deliberately came over to bring me away. When I go out to drink my sorrows away, she would take the glasses of alcohol away from me. However, Rubing would heartlessly reject me and even say hurtful words when I confess my feelings to her. When I went over to the laboratory to question her about her relationship with Li Jianyun, she seemed like she was about to tell me something although she didn’t in the end—she simply rejected my offer to help her out. She wore a really complicated expression on her face back then. Anyway, why are you asking me about this, Yu?”
After thinking for a few seconds, Mu Yu answered, “I suspect that she’s been rejecting you because…”
Just then, someone flung the door open from outside. This was followed by Bian Zijun’s anxious voice as he said, “Bad news, boss!”
