My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 202
Chapter 202 The Young Girl’s Deepest Thoughts
Rong Jian’s heart jolted in surprise as he thought, Does Qiqi know about the whole incident with Rubing?
“I’m so disappointed in you! Hmph!” Feng Qiqi turned her head away from the man as her furious gaze landed upon Mu Yu, who was standing behind him. While Rong Jian was still dumbfounded by this, Zhang Yiming seemed to have realized what was going on as he quickly put on a smile and pointed at Mu Yu as he said, “Hello, Qiqi. I’m Rong Jian’s friend, and this is your sister’s colleague, Mu Yu. I’m sure your sister has mentioned her name in the past, right?”
“You’re Mu Yu?!” Feng Qiqi blushed as she realized how she had misunderstood them and embarrassed herself. She pulled a funny face before she grinned and waved to Mu Yu. “Hello, Mu Yu.”
“It’s nice to meet you, Qiqi.” Mu Yu quickly snapped back to reality as she forced a smile and greeted the young girl in return. “Does your arm still hurt?”
“It does, but I’m really strong.” With her head tilted sideways, Feng Qiqi continued to scan the lady in front of her as she said, “You’re really pretty, Mu Yu. You’re a perfect match with Huan!”
Mu Yu was surprised to hear this. “Do you know Huan as well?”
“I do. Rong Jian once brought me for a feast along with Huan and Zeyu. Huan’s really good-looking, but he’s just like my sister—the two of them are always so cold and distant when they’re around people of the opposite sex. I used to be worried that he wouldn’t be able to find himself a partner, and I even thought of sacrificing myself to be his girlfriend. It’s a shame that he rejected me because I was too young.” Feng Qiqi quickly realized how inappropriate it might be to make such jokes in front of Mu Yu, so she stuck her tongue out and quickly added, “Don’t get mad, Mu Yu. It’s all the past; I’m glad that Huan has a pretty and outstanding girlfriend like you now.”
Humored by the young girl’s innocence, Mu Yu continued to play along by asking, “Zeyu doesn’t have a girlfriend either, so why aren’t you worried for him?”
“He doesn’t have an official girlfriend, but he has a girl that he likes,” Feng Qiqi replied with great sincerity. “Don’t you know that he’s interested in Ying?”
“I…”
“You’re always bothering yourself with such matters; why don’t you worry about yourself instead?” Rong Jian spoke in a slightly nagging tone, interrupting Mu Yu while he glanced at Feng Qiqi’s arm cast.
“The doctor was overreacting when he made me put this on. I’m perfectly fine—look…”
“Hey! Don’t mess around!” Rong Jian held onto Feng Qiqi’s arm before she could reach out to tear her cast off. “This isn’t some kind of joke!”
Zhang Yiming advised with a smile, “You should really be careful with that. It’d be hard for you to find a partner if your arm ends up crooked for the rest of your life.”
“That’d never happen.” Although Feng Qiqi said this, she obediently returned her arm cast to the way it had been without toying around with it any longer.
After ensuring that Feng Qiqi’s mood wasn’t affected by her injury, Rong Jian put on a serious face and began questioning her as soon as she had settled down in her spot. “Why did you fight with your sister last Saturday night, Qiqi?”
“Why are you asking about this again? Haven’t I explained it to you already?” Feng Qiqi seemed rather annoyed. “Did my sister say something bad about me in front of you?”
“No, no—it’s because… because…” Rong Jian fumbled with his words as he hadn’t expected Feng Qiqi to throw the question back at him so soon.
“Your sister’s the one who asked Rong Jian to ask you about it.” Mu Yu finished his sentence with a smile.
“Yu…”
“I knew it—she still doesn’t believe that I was playing with my girlfriends that night!” Fuming, Feng Qiqi continued, “Although I do have a lot of guy friends, it was really late that night and I was in my pajamas; how could I have visited a guy’s house? She always thinks of me as someone with no self-worth!”
“Your sister only asked Chief Rong to check and confirm your location that night because she worries and cares for you!” Upon gesturing for Rong Jian to move aside, Mu Yu then sat down beside Feng Qiqi. With a more sincere tone of voice, she continued, “This is something you’re not aware of, but we previously received a call for help at the station—it was a mother whose daughter had fled out of the house after they had a small argument. The mother got her entire family to search for the daughter, but no one could find her. She was sobbing by the time she called us, and she was worried that something might have happened to her. We dispatched a great number of inspectors only to finally locate the young woman; she was lying unconscious in a truck that was about to head out of town.”
“Why was she unconscious?” The young girl clearly couldn’t tell that Mu Yu had made this story up, interrupting the former mid-way to ask for more details curiously.
“She was drugged by the kidnappers! There were a few other young girls who were about her age. According to the kidnappers’ claims, they were about to sell them off into the mountains and ravines. I can’t imagine how terrible things would’ve gotten if we hadn’t managed to stop them in time.”
At first, Feng Qiqi was completely shocked by this story. However, she gave it some thought before she asked suspiciously, “This is huge news. Why haven’t I seen it on the web? I scroll through the news every single day when I get home!”
“It’s been covered up because we don’t want the general public to panic about it!” Rong Jian rejoined the conversation as he said, “None of the parents in town would allow their children to leave their house alone if they ever found out about this news, right?”
Zhang Yiming then interrupted and asked, “Doesn’t the school have some sort of safety education class?”
“They have it at the start of every semester, but I thought it was just a show for the public.”
“You thought it was a show? No wonder your sister’s so worried about you. Perhaps she knows that you’re lacking in awareness and the skills to protect yourself!” In accordance to Mu Yu’s intentions, Zhang Yiming went on and said, “Do you think it’d be bad if those young girls who had been kidnapped were sent off to the mountains and ravines? Let me tell you this—they’re considered to be lucky in comparison to others! The ones who have it the worst are those who have their limbs amputated so that they can be sent out onto the streets as beggars. Some of them are even killed for their organs, while others are sent off to entertainment clubs where they provide special services; in the end…”
“Will they end up like Kiki, who died after contracting AIDS?”
Zhang Yiming froze upon being interrupted. Noticing this, Mu Yu quickly took over the conversation while subsequently steering the topic toward her main point. “Your sister came in contact with a lot of similar cases, and the victims of these cases were mostly around your age. Can you understand why she’s so worried about you now?” The older woman could tell that Feng Qiqi’s expression seemed a little troubled, so she gave Zhang Yiming a subtle look, hinting for him to stop just in case his words were psychologically traumatizing to the young girl.
Without realizing this, Feng Qiqi nodded meekly as she felt a lump in her throat. “Is that the reason why she spent half the night searching for me in the snowstorm after I simply slammed the door and left the house? Is she afraid that I might become one of the young victims in her cases? Am I that silly to her? I think she’s the one who’s being silly here; she’s getting all worried for nothing! I’ve heard her lectures on self-defense and the idea of ‘stranger danger’ since I was a child; I scroll through Facebook and keep myself updated with all the latest news… It’s not like I wouldn’t be able to tell if some nasty, foul scammers on the streets were trying to trick me! Also, she sent me for Taekwondo classes ever since I was six years old, and I’ve been attending classes for eight years now! Although I might not be good enough to protect the people around me, I surely know enough to defend myself!”
Everyone’s gaze landed on her injured arm right then. She quickly took a deep breath before she explained, “I didn’t injure myself during a fight. This was because the soles of my shoes were slippery; I slipped and fell when the boy shoved me earlier!”
“Regardless of what you say, everything your sister did was out of her concern for you. After all, you’re the only family she has left; you’re the one she loves the most.” Rong Jian passed a few tissues over to Feng Qiqi.
“It’s not true love. She’s only caring for me to fulfill her responsibility and duty as my elder sister. Otherwise, she’d probably be too embarrassed to meet my daddy and mommy at the other side in the future.” Feng Qiqi didn’t take the tissues from him as she simply lifted her head up and fought back her tears. With a scoff, she continued, “I’m sure you all don’t know about this, but my parents weren’t the ones who named me ‘Qiqi’; my sister was the one who gave me this name after my parents passed away. According to her, ‘Qiqi’ sounds like ‘abandonment’ in Chinese—she would’ve abandoned me much earlier if it weren’t for the fact that my parents had ordered her to take care of me before they passed away.”
“How could your sister ever think of abandoning you? She must’ve only said that to scare you in a fit of anger!” A look of disbelief filled Rong Jian’s face.
Mu Yu quickly supported his claim and said, “Yeah, yeah! When I was a naughty kid, my mother would always scare me by threatening to throw me into the dumpster or to send me off in the recycling truck.”
With her eyes narrowed as she glanced at the two of them, Feng Qiqi then broke into a smile as she said, “Did my sister send the two of you over to spy on me? Why do you guys sound more like persuasive speakers now?”
“Actually, we…”
“Actually, I know how much my sister cares about me, Mu Yu.” All of a sudden, Feng Qiqi turned serious as she said, “I just don’t like how she’s always wearing that stern and straight expression whenever she talks to me and how she always speaks in a lecturing tone—I can’t stop myself from starting an argument with her when I see her acting that. I know that she holds high expectations for me, and I know she’s only being especially strict because she wishes for me to be more mature than my peers; that way, I wouldn’t get tricked because of my immaturity. Unfortunately, she doesn’t understand that I’m just a kid—a kid who had never experienced the love of a parent. I’d get extremely envious whenever I see my classmates spending time with their parents, and I’d be desperate to be a part of their life story; I’d be a happy little princess in their home. Sometimes, I’d also think of fooling around and whining like a child when I’m with my sister just so that she’d show me the affection and care that I long for. But every time I see the cold, sharp gaze in my sister’s eyes, I’d get rid of any of these urges to do so.”
She began sobbing at this point. “You guys are all adults; you can’t possibly understand a child’s psychological needs for love and affection. Sometimes, I truly love my sister as she is my only family member, but other times, I hate her because she can never provide me with the warmth that I crave for—that’s how I end up picking fights with her. Do you know why I’m studying so hard? It’s because I want to be as outstanding as possible; once I get married and have kids, I will then have the ability to provide my children with a warm, loving home. I’ll make sure to get my husband to be especially kind and affectionate toward our children. That way, they can grow up being showered with love and joy from their parents.” The young girl broke into loud cries.
Her words came as a shock to both Rong Jian and Mu Yu, but Rong Jian was exceptionally shocked—he always thought he had known the young girl quite well. Now, he realized how he had never shown the young girl enough care. He only blamed himself even more upon realizing how she had shown so much care for him. After opening and closing his mouth for a few times, he still didn’t know what to say as he felt like he could never provide the young girl with what she wanted.
Feng Qiqi eventually brushed her tears off as she scoffed at herself between sobs. “You guys must think that it’s really comical and shameless of me to be thinking about getting married and having babies at my age, right?”
“No…”
“I know this isn’t what I should be thinking about at this age.” Feng Qiqi interrupted Mu Yu. She then continued, “That’s why I’ve never told anyone about this. I’m usually a strong girl, but today… today is…”
She didn’t manage to complete her sentence before she broke into loud sobs once again. This time, her cries were especially heart-breaking; she wouldn’t stop no matter what Rong Jian and Mu Yu said.
While they stood around helplessly, the doors to the room opened and a man stepped in. He called in a gentle voice, “Qiqi.”
