My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 193
Chapter 193 A Difficult Interrogation
M-Madam Feng? Mu Yu was surprised and her hand froze mid-air when she attempted to open the door.
“Chief Rong, drink some water. I’ll interrogate her.” Next, she heard Wu Xing’s nervous voice.
“Go away!”
“Chief Rong!”
“I did not kill anyone.” Feng Rubing’s surprising reply signaled her willingness to cooperate with Mu Yu.
“You said you didn’t kill anyone. So, tell me, what was your relationship with Li Jianyun? Why did you call each other multiple times? What did he say to you in the final call before his death? Also, where were you from nine o’ clock yesterday to midnight today?”
“Chief Rong, I think you should ask the questions one at a time. You just fired a few questions at her. How could she possibly answer you?”
“Shut up! Take your notes! Feng Ru… Who’s out there?” When he shouted, the door in front of Mu Yu was forcefully flung open. The gush of air from the movement made her take a step backward.
“Yu? Haven’t you gone home?” Rong Jian immediately lowered his voice.
“I-I’m about to go home. I walked past the room. About Madam Feng…”
“Wu Xing, you get out.”
“Oh, but what about the note-taking…”
“I’ll have Doctor Mu do it.”
“Alright.” Wu Xing promptly stood up and shuffled out of the room.
Mu Yu was about to walk into the room, but Bian Zijun called her, “Young Mistress, Boss wanted you to go home.”
“It’s fine. Wait for me out there.” Then, she entered the interrogation room and closed the door behind her before taking a look at Feng Rubing.
Feng Rubing looked as pale as a ghost, her eyes listless and her hair disheveled. She sat dejectedly in the middle of the room. Her pitiful and tired appearance pained Mu Yu and she called out to her mentor, “Madam Feng.”
However, Feng Rubing did not move at all. She only shifted her gaze to take a brief look at Mu Yu. Then, she looked away and continued spacing out.
Mu Yu stared at Rong Jian with a sorry look, questioning him about his decision to bring Madam Feng to the interrogation room. This decision was more than embarrassing to the colleagues in their bureau.
Rong Jian looked at her with a complicated expression but did not reply to her. Silently walking back to his previous spot, he quietly stared at Feng Rubing who had her mouth tightly shut.
The two of them seemed to be spacing out and the air in the room froze in tension. Mu Yu had just picked up the pen and took a look at both of them. When she saw that none of them were paying attention to her or saying anything, she was at a loss. After giving it some thought, she placed her pen down without saying a word, planning to skim through Wu Xing’s previous notes while waiting patiently for them to start a conversation.
But she was soon left disappointed at the notes because Wu Xing had only jotted down Feng Rubing’s personal information instead of anything related to the case. She sighed in secret and placed the notebook down, staring helplessly and anxiously at them.
A long pause later, Rong Jian who was standing against the table suddenly straightened up and commented, “Rubing, we all believe that you didn’t murder him. But if you continue to stay silent, how are we supposed to prove your innocence? You should know that the evidence in our hands is disadvantageous to you!”
Mu Yu quickly grabbed the pen to record, but her heart sank at Rong Jian’s final sentence. She immediately looked at Feng Rubing, waiting nervously for an answer. However, there was no reply although they had been waiting for a while. Her pale face remained expressionless.
Slap! Rong Jian slammed on the table and bellowed, “Feng Rubing! What’s with that attitude of yours?”
Mu Yu’s hand trembled at his temper and the pen rolled under the table. She did not bother to pick it up and instead advised him gently, “Chief Rong, don’t panic. Give her some time to organize her thoughts.”
“I have nothing more to say. You can look into it on your own.” Feng Rubing suddenly stood up and prepared to leave but was immediately stopped by Rong Jian. “You’re a suspect now. You can’t leave the city bureau during the detention period.”
“I’m heading toward the detention room.” She coldly shoved his hand away and walked around him to leave the room.
“Rubing! Rubing!” He ran after her and yelled but did not manage to make her stay. Standing at the door of the interrogation room, he stared blankly at her disappearing figure.
“Chief Rong, what’s going on?” When Feng Rubing was out of sight, Mu Yu asked in a great hurry, “Why did you bring her to the interrogation room? That’d embarrass her! She must be very upset now. If not, she wouldn’t have had…”
“Did you really think I was happy to do that? I had no choice!” Rong Jian cut her off with a pained voice. “She did not want to reveal anything to me but all evidence is now disadvantageous to her!”
“All evidence is disadvantageous to her? Is there any new evidence? We can’t possibly prove her guilty with the unfinished bloody writing and their call before the victim’s death…” At the mention of phone calls, Mu Yu was shocked and quickly checked with him, “Chief Rong, do you have a detailed list of Madam Feng’s call history over the past few days?”
“Yes. But why?” Rong Jian instantly sensed that something was wrong and stared squarely at her.
“Please check who she was talking to at ten in the morning two days ago.”
“Ten in the morning, two days ago…” Having entered the room, Rong Jian picked up a stack of documents and flicked through the pages. Mu Yu followed closely behind him and poked her head to peek.
All of a sudden, his hand trembled while clutching the papers tightly. Without further ado, he spun around to interrogate her, “How did you know she made that call? Did you overhear the conversation?”
Mu Yu was tensed up from his movements and cautiously inquired, “Was she talking to Li Jianyun?”
When Rong Jian nodded, she felt that a bomb was dropped on her, but she refused to believe it. Intending to test her luck, she asked again weakly, “Are you sure she was calling Li Jianyun? I mean, I can’t remember the exact time of the call. It’s around ten in the morning.”
Rong Jian thus showed her Feng Rubing’s call history on that day. “From nine in the morning to noon, she had only received one call.”
“Are you sure that’s Li Jianyun’s phone number?”
“Yeah. What did you overhear?” He was desperate to know the truth.
Ever since he found out Feng Rubing’s familiar number from Li Jianyun’s call history, he had always remembered Li Jianyun’s number as well.
Nervous, Mu Yu hesitated before informing him the conversation she overheard that day.
“Are you sure of that?” Rong Jian stared at her palely.
“Yes, I am sure.” Mu Yu threw out a guess with a worried look, “Say, could Madam Feng be threatening him only because he had harassed Qiqi before? Perhaps Madam Feng was worried that revealing the harassment would negatively impact on Qiqi and therefore remained silent about it.”
“But…” Rong Jian had wanted to bring up the discovery of Feng Rubing’s Ali the Fox panty in the victim’s room. However, on second thought, he deemed it unnecessary and changed the topic, “I’ll get more information from Qiqi.”
“Hey! Chief Rong!” Mu Yu quickly called him. “If the harassment did happen to Qiqi, I think it’s best to hear about it from Madam Feng.”
Upon thinking it over, Rong Jian agreed that her suggestion was more sensible and nodded while gathering his stuff from the room. “I’ll go meet up with Rubing. Yu, you should go home and rest.”
“Is there no new discovery by Officer Liu and Officer Yan?”
He understood what she was getting at and shook his head with a sigh. “Last night, it kept snowing until five in the morning today. All the surveillance cameras around the north of the city were faulty, and the tracks on the ground were covered up in snow. As of now, there was no evidence to prove that Rubing wasn’t at the crime scene. We also found no new clues about the murderer. I could thus bet that Rubing is definitely not the murderer!”
“Me too.” Sensing his agitation, she hurriedly concurred and sighed, “Too bad Madam Feng was unwilling to tell us anything. Chief Rong, should I talk to her? You’re the opposite gender after all…”
“I will go talk to her. I must be the one who gets to the bottom of her case.”
“Hey! Chief Rong, if Madam Feng still refuses to cooperate, do we need to figure out other ways to help her out?”
“What other suggestions do you have?” He stopped and turned around to ask her. When Mu Yu recalled Wu Xing’s ridiculing her ideas, she hesitated to speak out.
“Just say it. I will consider the best course of action.”
With his reassurance, she tentatively offered her idea, “I have a feeling that the three cases are committed by the same murderer. As far as we know, the three victims were all employees of the Qing Tian Group. Other than that, we’re not sure if they shared any connections. However, through our investigation of Sun Meilan and Zhao Yongli’s relationships, we noticed that they were not related to each other in any way. I believe that we would arrive at the same conclusion after investigating Li Jianyun’s relationships. But from the brutal method used by the murderer on the three victims, the murderer must have been vengeful toward all three.”
At this point, she elaborated on the plot of the thriller she watched in the past before continuing, “Perhaps, the three victims had a shared experience, which was nothing much to them but was a big deal to the murderer, who wanted to vent his or her anger through the serial murders.”
When she did not receive a reply from Rong Jian, she guessed that he had the same thought as Wu Xing about the ridiculousness of her hypothesis. Flustered, she chuckled wryly and scratched her head. “It’s just a guess. You can ignore it. Go ahead and meet Madam Feng.”
Unexpectedly, Rong Jian gave it some consideration and answered her with a serious tone, “I think we should not rule out that possibility. I will send some men to investigate the connections among the three.”
His acknowledgment was a nice surprise to her, and she quickly walked him through her thoughts. “Chief Rong, Sun Meilan was mean, so her tongue was cut up. Zhao Yongli was cruel-hearted and his heart was taken out. As for Li Jianyun, he harassed women and got his hands cut. It seems that the murderer was very specific in the crimes. If my guess is true, I think the shared experience among the three must have had to do with their vices. We could probably follow these clues to ask around.”
“I understand what you mean. I will immediately have someone look into it.” He walked to the end of the corridor while taking out his phone.
Mu Yu stared at him leaving. After that, she looked at her notebook and fell into a deep thought.
Now that the primary crime scene was confirmed to be the tenth floor of the construction site of Qing Tian Group’s shopping mall, except for the cut-up palm, fingers and the unfinished writing in blood, the case was similar to the previous two in that the murderer had calmly cleaned up the scene, leaving no useful clues for the police.
They had matched the fingertip of the victim with the writing in blood. If the murderer did not force the victim to leave the writing in blood, then it was probably the victim’s will to do so. With the murderer’s anti-reconnaissance skills and his or her control over the scene, it was impossible for him not to notice the writing. Therefore, Mu Yu came to the conclusion that the unfinished writing in blood was left at the scene by the murderer to confuse the police.
Why didn’t he write anything else except for the three opening strokes of Feng Rubing’s surname? Did the murderer know about Li Jianyun’s conflict with Madam Feng? Did the murderer know Madam Feng?
If so… Mu Yu’s phone suddenly buzzed from Jiang Wenwen’s call and she picked it up.
“Yu, how’s Young Master Qin?”
“What?”
“Wait, did you not know about it?’
“Did something happen?” Her friend’s anxious inquiry made her tense up as well.
“Oh my god! How could you not know about the incident? You don’t care about your husband, do you?”
“What happened to Huan?” Mu Yu grew anxious.
“A worker’s dorm of the Qing Tian Group’s factory at the outskirts has collapsed. Young Master Qin and his staff immediately went over to save lives, but the dorm collapsed for the second time and all of them are now buried in the rubble! Their lives are at stake!”
“What?” Mu Yu blacked out and fell backward onto the floor.
