My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 188
Chapter 188 Questions
“I’ve put them together! It’s a complete set!”
“Really?” Mu Yu immediately abandoned Qin Jinhuan to rush into the laboratory.
“Take a look for yourself!” Pleased, Wu Xing took a step backward to make way for her.
Mu Yu went forward and saw ten severed fingers laid out on the table and were even arranged in fives to mimic the actual structure of the human hand. The blood that seeped out from the finger detached from the palms turned the scene into a horror film.
“Is this the hand of the victim?” Following in, Qin Jinhuan stared agape at the assembled fingers and asked.
“Not sure about that because we haven’t received the DNA results. Currently, I could only compare the cut-off areas and assemble them to confirm that these ten fingers were a complete group.”
“How long before the DNA results come out?”
“A day.”
“Oh. How about the palms?” Suppressing the nauseous feeling, Qin Jinhuan stared at the empty space near the fingers. “Are they missing?”
“That should be the palm.” Wu Xing pointed at the pile of torn flesh in front of him. “But it was too finely minced and I couldn’t put them together.”
He knew Qin Jinhuan well and was afraid that the latter would misjudge his professionalism. Therefore, he added, “I’m a police officer, not a professional forensic doctor.”
“Even a forensic doctor can’t assemble this.” Mu Yu looked at the torn flesh and bones in front of her with a grave expression.
“So, you haven’t confirmed that the palm belonged to the victim?”
“So far, no. All results would come back in a day’s time. But I think Officer Wu was right. This should be the victim’s palm.”
“But why mince it up…” Before Qin Jinhuan could finish his sentence, he felt a nauseous feeling rising up his throat and hurriedly covered his mouth before dashing out of the lab.
“Young Master Qin, you…”
“Just ignore him.” Mu Yu stopped Wu Xing while carefully examining the severed fingers, the minced flesh and bones.
“Doctor Mu, I think you should check on him and get him a glass of warm water.” Wu Xing took a worried glance at the door.
“Don’t sweat about it. He can take care of himself. Let’s continue.” After that, Mu Yu buried herself in work.
“But Young Master Qin…”
“Work is our priority for now. Chief Rong and his team are waiting for our examination report.”
“Oh.” Wu Xing finally shifted his attention away from Qin Jinhuan and focused on his work.
“Let’s say this pile of flesh and bones are from the palm of the victim. Why would the murderer want to mince it up?”
“What?” After a long period of working, Mu Yu suddenly blurted out that question which surprised Wu Xing. He looked at her only to realize that she was talking to herself instead of addressing him.
The photos she was staring at were from the previous two murder cases.
“Maybe this case is not the doing of the same criminal. Could it be a copycat crime?”
“You’re still here?” Astonished, Mu Yu stared at Qin Jinhuan who was standing at the lab entrance.
“Yup.” He hid the fact that he had vomited at the restroom, rating for a while on the floor before feeling like himself again. He finally understood the reason she felt nauseous at the sight of the braised meat at lunch.
When she saw his pale expression, she expressed her concern with a tinge of guilt, “Are you okay? Did you get some water?”
“I drank some water. I’m fine now. What do you think about the three murder cases?’
Mu Yu observed him and concluded that he was fine, which was a relief to her. She poured out her thoughts to him, “Based on my hunch, the same criminal must have carried out these three murder cases. It’s not a copycat crime.”
“Doctor Mu, we can’t use our hunch in solving cases,” Wu Xing interrupted her out of the blue.
“Uh… I guess you’re right. We have to be evidence-based.” Mu Yu laughed dryly.
“So, what do you think then?” Qin Jinhuan did not enter the lab and merely shot a look at Wu Xing while leaning on the doorframe. Wu Xing immediately realized that his tone before must have sounded like he was lambasting Mu Yu, which made him a little uncomfortable. He hurriedly explained himself, “Doctor Mu, don’t misunderstand me. I didn’t mean to blame you. I just…”
Mu Yu was flustered by Wu Xing’s sudden honorific form of speech and waved at him frantically. “Officer Wu, please don’t say that. I think you’re right; we need to solve cases with an evidence-based approach instead of following our emotions blindly. You’re experienced and have seen many cases. I’m more than willing to learn from you. Really!”
After that, she coughed a little to summon Qin Jinhuan. When he looked at her, she gave him a look, hinting at him to show some respect to Wu Xing. After Qin Jinhuan shifted his gaze elsewhere, she continued on, “Office Wu, I’d like to know your opinion on the three cases.”
Wu Xing stole a glance at Qin Jinhuan and smiled embarrassedly, “I can’t be sure. After all, we haven’t received any test results for the evidence. Let’s wait for Chief Rong to analyze the case together.”
Knowing that Wu Xing would not share any opinion anymore, Mu Yu was helpless and wanted to continue working but she was interrupted by Qin Jinhuan’s comment, “You said that these three cases are probably linked to the same murderer. Why were Sun Meilan’s severed tongue and Zhao Yongli’s carved-out heart both diced but Li Jianyun’s palm was minced up, assuming that this is truly Li Jianyun’s palm.”
Mu Yu looked at the ten fingers assembled on the lab table. “If these fingers, flesh and bones are Li Jianyun’s, I think that cutting up the fingers are equivalent to dicing the victim’s heart. As for the palm, it can’t be diced because there are bones in it. However, the murderer needed to vent his frustration and could only mince it up.”
Qin Jinhuan thought that her words made sense and did not debate with her anymore. Instead, he focused on the photos from the previous murder cases that were pinned on the blackboard.
Following his gaze, Mu Yu ruminated in silence for a while before mumbling, “What’s the relationship among the three victims?”
“The only similarity between them is that they were Qing Tian Group’s employees,” Wu Xing could not refrain from interjecting but immediately regretted the moment his words slipped out. He quickly stole an embarrassed glance at Qin Jinhuan.
“I was referring to something beyond their immediate connections. For example, common relatives, friends, neighbors, schoolmates or…” She was too focused on the blackboard to observe his expression. At the thought of that, her eyes shone and the pace of her speech intensified. “Or maybe they had a shared experience?”
Qin Jinhuan was taken aback by her bold suggestion. “What kind of shared experience?”
“That’s right!” Mu Yu was excited. “I’ve seen an old tv drama about four murders. On the surface, the four victims seemed to be strangers but that was not the case. They were all witnesses to the death of a pregnant woman and their inaction indirectly contributed to it. Another passerby took a photo of the scene and the photo was published in the news. After that, the husband of the pregnant victim found all four of them and killed them one by one.”
“Do you think that there is a shared experience among Sun Meilan, Zhao Yongli and Li Jianyun?”
“Yes! They must have crossed each other’s lives at some point in time that we are unaware of!”
Wu Xing was irritated by Mu Yu’s excited little dance and wanted to retort by reminding her that solving a case was not as easy as that. However, Qin Jinhuan’s presence stopped him from acting rashly toward Mu Yu. Even so, he had to say something to her and forced himself to soften his voice, “What kind of shared experience do you think they went through?”
“Well, I don’t know. That’s just my guess.” Mu Yu grinned at him.
“Your guess is a little too…” Wu Xing wanted to describe her hypothesis as nonsensical but had to make a U-turn when he noticed Qin Jinhuan’s eyes on him. “…imaginative.”
“A light bulb went off in my head.” The naive Mu Yu misinterpreted Wu Xing’s remark as a compliment and blushed embarrassedly.
“Please make way!”
Madam Feng?
Mu Yu swiftly turned around and saw Qin Jinhuan making way for Feng Rubing, who marched into the lab.
“Madam Feng, why are you here? Are you feeling better?” Mu Yu immediately shuffled up to greet her and to express concern.
“Yes. How’s the examination of evidence going?” Feng Rubing still looked pale and her eyes remained bloodshot. She was clearly sick even though she was in a better condition now compared to the time at the crime scene. Her arrival worried Mu Yu because Feng Rubing’s insistence to report to work while sick was proof of her distrust in Mu Yu’s ability.
“It’s in progress.” Mu Yu looked a little upset.
“You should rest in the office. I’ll take care of things.” Feng Rubing put on the gloves and stood beside Mu Yu, gesturing at the latter to make space.
Mu Yu picked up her notebook and fawned at Feng Rubing. “I’ll help you to record the data.”
“No need for that. I can do that myself.”
“If so, I can help to…”
Feng Rubing cut her off coolly, “Why don’t you keep your family company?”
Oh God!
Mu Yu was instantly reminded that Qin Jinhuan had entered the lab without wearing the required lab coat as written in the lab rules. She jumped a little in shock and frantically waved at Qin Jinhuan, hinting at him to leave. However, he merely shrugged in an uncaring fashion, pouting at her and gesturing at her to leave with him.
“You go home now. I have some work to do.”
“Let’s leave together.”
“No!” Mu Yu swiftly took off her gloves and ran over to shove him out of the lab.
“Be gentle! Don’t move your body around!” Qin Jinhuan quickly grabbed her arm and stared at her in concern.
“I won’t have to use force if you leave here.” Mu Yu was confused at his concerned face but kept urging him to leave.
“Sure, sure. I will leave. I am leaving now. But you have to eat before you get back to work! It’s three in the afternoon!”
“Doctor Mu, you haven’t had lunch? Go have lunch now!” Wu Xing cajoled Mu Yu to listen to Qin Jinhuan.
“She didn’t have breakfast either.”
“What? That’s not good! Doctor Mu, you should get some food quickly. I’m here to help Doctor Feng out.” While talking, Wu Xing had wandered to the lab entrance and forcefully shut the door from the inside.
“Hey! Officer Wu! I am not…”
“Even if you’re not hungry, it doesn’t mean that your baby isn’t!”
“B-Baby?” She recalled Qin Jinhuan’s words earlier and responded in shock, “Are you saying that I’m pregnant? H-How is that possible?”
Qin Jinhuan caressed her face dotingly and smiled. “Are you questioning my ability to procreate?”
“No! I have no mood to joke around!” The sudden news was hard to digest for Mu Yu. “Who told you that I’m pregnant?”
“It’s grandpa.” Qin Jinhuan squinted his eyes when he brought up Qin Xiaozhi. At noon, he received a shocking call from his grandpa regarding the pregnancy news. He was especially stunned when grandpa confessed to the reason behind Mu Yu’s sudden pregnancy. The confession infuriated him, causing him to yell into the phone before hanging up rudely.
He wasn’t against the idea of having children; he was only unhappy at grandpa’s interference in his private life. If it was Mu Yu who wanted a child, he would have happily agreed to it. Although he was speechless and enraged at grandpa’s ridiculous behavior, he still felt joyful at the news.
“How would he know that I’m pregnant? By the way, didn’t we always use contraceptives?” Mu Yu stared at him in disbelief. He had to tell her the reason behind her pregnancy in the most concise manner.
“What? How could grandpa do that?” Mu Yu was speechless. However, when she thought of grandpa’s concern for her, which prompted him to confess and to endure the wrath of Qin Jinhuan, she was tickled by the funny situation and at the same time pitied the old man. She didn’t take the situation too seriously because she was not against the arrival of the surprise baby.
Next, she caressed her belly with surprise in her eyes. “Am I really pregnant? Do I have a baby in here? I…”
The office door was abruptly flung open by someone. Then, Rong Jian appeared in panic.
“Chief Rong…”
“Where’s Rubing?”
“She’s in the lab. Hey, Chief Rong, is there new evidence? Oh, Chief Rong, you have to change before entering the lab!”
However, Rong Jian ignored her and dashed into the lab.
“Chief Rong, you…”
‘Get out! Get lost!” They could hear Rong Jian yelling in the lab. Soon, Wu Xing came out of the lab looking upset. The next second, the door to the lab was slammed shut with a loud bang.
