My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 184
Chapter 184 Disconsolate Men and Women
Mu Yu was comforting Qin Chengxi in the guest room and was surprised when she received the text from Qin Jinhuan telling her that he would leave home. She immediately texted him back to ask about the reason for going out late at night.
‘I have some work-related matters. You should rest ahead,’ he replied. After receiving the explanation, Mu Yu instantly walked over to the window. She pulled open the curtains and pushed out the window, from which a chilly winter breeze gushed in with snowflakes, making her tremble in cold.
“Wow, that’s a heavy snowfall!” Following behind Mu Yu, Qin Chengxi huddled her arms together in front of the window and exclaimed.
“I didn’t expect the snow to be this heavy.” With a frown, Mu Yu closed the windows and lowered her head, focusing on sending a text to Qin Jinhuan, ‘The snow is getting heavy. Stay safe!’
Qin Jinhuan responded within seconds, ‘I’ll be careful. Don’t worry, rest early. Kisses.’
‘Come home as early as you can.’
‘Got it.’
“What’s wrong, Yu?” Qin Chengxi could tell that something was not right from Mu Yu’s expression.
“Your brother went out. I reminded him to stay safe,” Mu Yu replied while sliding her phone back into her pocket.
“Huh? Why did he leave home this late?” Qin Chengxi immediately started worrying. “The snow is heavy out there. If the roads are icy on his way back, his car might skid! If there’s nothing important, you should tell him to come home soon.”
“That’s fine. He’s not a child anyway.” Mu Yu faked a cool laugh to disguise her anxiety. “It’s late. You must be tired. Go rest now so that you are well-rested to meet grandpa tomorrow.”
The mention of grandpa made Qin Chengxi fret in worry and she gently let out a sigh.
“Don’t be nervous.” Mu Yu pulled her to sit on the bed. “Huan and I will be with you.”
Qin Chengxi pursed her lips and nodded gently, but fear lingered in her eyes. Mu Yu mulled over it and changed her approach to soothe Qin Chengxi. “How about this? If grandpa knocks on your door next morning, you can call Huan and me. If he doesn’t, you can call us regardless so that we can accompany you to meet him.”
“Thanks, Yu.” Qin Chengxi sniffled and was touched by Mu Yu’s thoughtfulness.
“It’s nothing! We’re a family after all. Okay, sleep early now.” Mu Yu was about to leave but she was suddenly reminded of something, prompting her to turn around and look at Qin Chengxi’s face. “Put some warm towels on your face. If your face is still swollen tomorrow morning, just hide it with your hair so that grandpa will not worry about it and get angry at your parents.”
Qin Chengxi squirmed at the suggestion. “Isn’t it too awkward to greet grandpa with my wig? Would he be shocked?”
“Your appearance is indeed very different with the wig on and he might find it hard to accept.” Mu Yu finally realized that her suggestion could be inappropriate. She stared carefully at the finger marks that Dong Yueyun left on Qin Chengxi’s cheeks and instantly got another idea. “The finger marks on your face are closer to your ear and can be hidden with a huge beanie. Grandpa will not suspect anything if you wear a beanie on a cold day. I’ll find one for you.”
Then, she quickly went to her room and into the dressing room to get a suitable beanie for Qin Chengxi. She then brought it back to the guest room and confirmed that the beanie could hide the finger marks, which made her feel relieved. After leaving a few words of comfort for Qin Chengxi, she returned to her room.
When she was back in her room, she sent another text to Qin Jinhuan, asking when he’d be back. She got a fast reply from him, but he only told her to rest ahead of him without stating what time he’d be back. She stood in front of the French windows and stared at the balcony on which a layer of snow had accumulated. It was a visual reminder of the potentially iced-up roads, which made her worry.
At the same time, she was also aware that Qin Jinhuan would only go out late at night for urgent matters. After washing up and lying in bed, she tossed and turned but could not fall asleep. Unable to do anything but pray silently, she stared blankly at the ceiling and sent a text to Qin Jinhuan at thirty-minute intervals. Finally, he returned safely at three in the morning.
Mu Yu had already been waiting at the door. He saw her right after he came out of the car and immediately hurried toward her as he lectured her sorrily, “Didn’t I tell you to rest earlier? Why are you still waiting at the door? What if you get sick from the cold?”
“I’m worried about you.” She stomped her feet and breathed onto her hands for warmth while beaming at him.
“What’s there to worry about? What could happen?” He took her hand and swiftly brought her into the house. “Come in quickly! Don’t bother to wait for me at the door next time, alright?”
“How about I wait in the living room?”
He playfully whispered in her ear, “Get showered and wait for me in bed.”
“You’re annoying!” Her shy expression cheered him up and turned his heavy mood around. He pecked on her cheeks but the coldness of her skin pained him. He clutched her hand and led her upstairs. “What would I do if you fall sick from the cold?”
Mu Yu was afraid that she’d be lectured again and cheekily smiled at him. “It feels less cold when I’m waiting for you! Not only that, I was fully prepared for the cold and I was waiting under the roof anyway. It was not as cold as you thought.”
“Even so, you are forbidden from waiting out there.”
“Well, I wouldn’t have had to wait out there had you not left home late at night.”
Her casual remark rendered him speechless. After entering the bedroom, he stared at her with a serious expression and promised, “Next time, I will try my best to stay with you at home at night.”
“Okay. I’ll get you your pajamas.” Mu Yu did not notice the odd emotion in his eyes at all and merrily rushed over to the wardrobe to get his pajamas. She blinked at him playfully and said, “And now, I shall warm up the bed for you.”
Then, she took off her heavy cotton pajamas and sneaked under the blanket, only revealing her two eyes that were blinking at him underneath it. Her antics cheered him up and he entered the bathroom with a smile.
When he returned to the bed after washing up and wanted to chat a little with Mu Yu in his arms, he found out that she was already fast asleep. In order not to wake her up, he moved around lightly and lay down carefully beside her. Staring at her peaceful sleeping face, he was brought back to the scene earlier today at Rong Jian’s place, and a complex expression appeared on his face.
Earlier today, after he had left Gloria Hotel with Mu Yu and Qin Chengxi, Rong Ying got into an argument with Rong Jian and she vented her anger by drinking a bit more than she could handle. Rong Jian noticed that his sister was in a bad mood and wanted to prevent her from making a scene. Therefore, he insisted on taking her from Gloria Hotel to his place in a hurry. He made the decision because Fraternity Hospital was far from the hotel and he didn’t want to worry their parents by sending her home.
Wen Zeyu was concerned about Rong Ying and stubbornly joined them in the car, sitting in the backseat to take care of her. The two unexpectedly had a fight, during which she hurt him with words from her drunkenness. Heartbroken, Wen Zeyu got into a fit of fury, ordered Rong Jian to stop the car and left abruptly on the spot. His absence did not make her feel better, so she burst into tears in the backseat. The crying was still ongoing when Rong Jian stopped the car in front of his apartment. At a loss, he called Qin Jinhuan over because he thought that this matter would be better handled by the source of all her problems.
“Huan, you knew that I love you so much but why won’t you ever give me a chance? Am I not as good as Mu Yu? Just tell me. Tell me!” Tear-stricken and cheeks flushing, Rong Ying latched onto Qin Jinhuan’s arm and repeated the same question.
“He doesn’t love you; he doesn’t have feelings for you. There is no reasonable explanation for that. You can’t force a relationship!” Rong Jian was prying her away from Qin Jinhuan while giving her a piece of harsh advice. However, Rong Ying seemed to have blocked out his voice and was only fixated on Qin Jinhuan, crying and waiting for an answer.
Qin Jinhuan came mentally prepared and stared squarely at Rong Ying when he made himself clear. “Even though Yu is lacking in many ways compared to you, you brother is right. There is no good reason behind falling in love. I am simply in love with her. Please do not compare yourself to her in the future, which is meaningless. Don’t waste your time and energy on me as well because it is unnecessary.”
Rong Jian agreed and helped to persuade Rong Ying. “It’s the same as how you see Zeyu. You don’t love him. That’s why no matter how much effort he put into you, he will never move you. It’s the same logic.”
“Zeyu truly loves you. He…”
Rong Ying wailed and cut Qin Jinhuan off, “I don’t need his love! I only want you to love me!”
“Rong Ying! Can you be more rational?” Rong Jian gave her a hard shove and reprimanded her, “You know very well that Huan loves Yu and they are officially married. Why are you making life difficult for them? Is it fun to split them up? By the way, it’s fine if you don’t love Zeyu, but why would you hurt him with your harsh words? Don’t you think you’re being too much?”
“I’m being too much? What about you all?” Rong Ying became very emotional. “You know that I don’t love Zeyu, but you keep matching me with him, daydreaming that I’d spend the rest of my life with a man that I don’t love! Don’t you know that it hurts when you do that? You’ve never considered my feelings; you only think of yours. No one cares about me sincerely at all!”
“Ying…”
“I hate all of you!” After that, Rong Ying did not wait for them to get out. Instead, she was the one who ran out from Rong Jian’s place. He immediately followed his sister out but she avoided him by hailing a cab and leaving. Worried about her safety, Rong Jian and Qin Jinhuan tailed the cab by driving behind it until they finally confirmed that she had returned to the neighborhood where her parents stayed, which was much to their relief. The two men sat in silence at the entrance to their neighborhood until Huang Bo notified Qin Jinhuan that the snow had gotten heavier and the roads were getting icy, which would be a hazard soon. Then, the two finally parted ways.
Qin Jinhuan had always kept a distance away from Rong Ying, thinking that it would help her to leave behind her feelings for him. He did not expect that her feelings for him were still growing after all these years. He was also surprised to know that she was hurt when he introduced her to Wen Zeyu. He merely did that because he really thought that Wen Zeyu could take good care of her. After all, Qin Jinhuan wished for her happiness because he was grateful for her kindness over the years.
Rong Ying was right—he was too egotistical on this matter and he should not have interfered in her romantic relationships. Anyway, he should probably worry about this after they settled Xi’s meeting with grandpa.
He rubbed his throbbing temple. Hugging Mu Yu tenderly, he drifted off into sleep.
Because they slept late, they woke up at eleven in the morning, upon which they were instantly reminded of Xi’s meeting with grandpa. They exchanged blank glances with each other and shot up to wash up and change, leaving their room to check on Xi at the guest room. Right then, they overheard Qin Xiaozhi’s angry yell from downstairs. “Get lost! Get lost, as far as you can from my vision!”
“Grandpa, can you not do this?” Qin Chengxi’s sobbing voice followed.
“Shut up! Get lost! Why are you three still standing there? Hey, drive them out for me!”
Oh my God! Grandpa is going to drive Xi away!
Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan’s hearts sank and they dashed downstairs together.
