My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 177
Chapter 177 The Awkwardness in the Office
In the middle of winter, the skies of An City were always gloomy and full of greyish clouds. The chilling winds went on a rampage on the ground, declaring its power.
“The yellow alert for the cold will continue to be issued. Due to the strong and cold air, the temperature in An City is predicted to fall between -5°C to -10°C, and the city will see its first snowfall for the year, accompanied by strong winds and heavy mist. The related departments and individuals are reminded to take precautions for the wind and cold.”
Since last night, all radio stations and TV channels circulated the same announcement, which Mu Yu had listened to at least ten times. At that moment, she was sitting in the car with her palms together, praying silently that Qin Chengxi and Rong Ying’s flight could land safely in An City.
Her phone rang, and she saw that it was a call from Jiang Wenwen, which she immediately answered.
“Yu, how long before you arrive?”
“Are you reaching soon?” Mu Yu hurriedly wiped the misted window glass with her hands to look out of the car as she replied, “I need another ten minutes. Don’t wait for me outdoors. It’s windy out here. Just wait for me at the guardhouse.”
“The guard doesn’t let me in. I’ve mentioned your name to him, but he said he didn’t know you and refused to let me in. That old dude is too much. How could he not know the name of the Qin Family’s young mistress?” Jiang Wenwen sounded wronged.
“Are you a fool? Of course, the guard wouldn’t know my name. You’ll have to mention Chief Rong to him.”
“Huh? Let me try. Gosh, I’m freezing to death out here.” After complaining, Jiang Wenwen ended the call.
“Was that Jiang Wenwen? Doesn’t she have to work today?” Qin Jinhuan, who was seated beside Mu Yu, expressed his confusion.
“There’s going to be a cold wave over the next few days. Her school gave them a holiday because they were worried that something might happen if the students attend school.”
For a northern city, a temperature between -5°C to -10°C was no big deal. However, in An City where the average winter temperature ranged between 5°C and 10°C, this winter’s new low was considered record-breaking. As a result, all city departments were wary and geared up against the yellow alert for the cold wave, especially the high schools, elementary schools, and kindergartens.
“Why is she at your office?”
“She’s there to have fun. A few days ago, her parents went back to their hometown in the countryside. She’s now alone at home and bored. Since we haven’t met for a long time and I can’t really take leave, I allowed her to meet me at the office.” When she explained to Qin Jinhuan, her eyes darted around in fear that he would look through her mind. She immediately changed the topic, asking, “Will Xi and Ying’s flight be affected by the cold wave?”
“They will arrive in the afternoon. The temperature only dips tonight, so they should be fine. Are you going with me to pick them up in the afternoon?”
“Of course I’ll have to. I really want to see with my own eyes how Xi looks like now.” When the matter was brought up, Mu Yu felt excited. “Oh, right, remember to bring the gift that we prepared for Xi.”
“Sure.”
Mu Yu suddenly thought of something, and she expressed her concern, “Say, when Xi is back, should we let her go home or…”
“Of course she will live with us.” Qin Jinhuan was obviously too worried to hand over his sister, who had undergone gender reassignment surgery, to the parents.
“But you know about Grandpa’s opinion on this. I’m scared that he’d be agitated.”
A few days ago, Mu Yu chatted with Qin Xiaozhi and brought up the topic of transgender. She jokingly asked Qin Xiaozhi how he’d deal with someone like that around him, and he replied without a second thought, “Of course I’ll turn that person into a guy. Male is better than female after all.”
“After my morning meeting, I’ll head home to talk to Grandpa.”
Mu Yu hurriedly reminded him, “Then, you have to be tactical when you bring this up. Don’t tell him everything. Otherwise, he’d not take it well.”
Under the orders of Qin Jinhuan, Qi Hao and Yu Zhongguang had both lied to Qin Xiaozhi, saying that Qin Chengxi had gone abroad to study.
Due to the cold weather, Qin Xiaozhi felt sick and basically spent his time resting at home. Moreover, Qin Wentao and Dong Yueyun rarely visited him unless there was an urgent matter. Therefore, Qin Xiaozhi did not think much of it when he did not see the family of three.
“When Xi is back in the city, it will be hard to hide this issue from Grandpa. He’ll know about it sooner or later.”
“But…”
“I will be cautious when I talk to him.”
“When you talk to Grandpa, remember to have Lei Zhi on standby.”
Her funny remark made him laugh. “You underestimated the resilience of Grandpa. It’s not going to be that serious.” He didn’t seem to care.
“I’m just worried. It’s better to be overly cautious than to be under-prepared.”
“Yes, I know it.” Seeing that the car had stopped in front of the city bureau and Huang Bo had left the car, Qin Jinhuan immediately turned to her and tidied the collar of her winter clothes. He brushed a few strands of her fringe on her forehead to the side as he told her, “I’ll pick you up in the afternoon.”
“Okay. I’ll wait for you.” She noticed that Huang Bo had not opened the door, and she took the chance to give him a kiss on the cheek. The moment she was done kissing him, the door was opened from the outside. She immediately behaved like a child who succeeded in stealing as she gleefully blinked at him and gave him a thumbs-up.
With a smile, he patted her on the head. She flashed a funny face at him before clutching her bag and leaving the car. Then, she turned back to remind him once more, “Later, it’s best if you bring Zeyu with you to talk to Grandpa. He’s slicker than you.”
“Got it. Head in quickly. It’s windy out here.”
“Okay.” She waved at him and closed the car door, standing there to send him off.
“Hah!” Suddenly, someone yelled and patted Mu Yu on the back, giving her a shock. She turned to see that it was Jiang Wenwen, so she feigned an angry look as she gave the latter a kick. She reprimanded her friend, “If you scare me one more time, I’ll not bring you to the party tonight.”
“You won’t be that cruel.” Jiang Wenwen chuckled and gave her a hug while pointing in the direction that Qin Jinhuan’s car left in. “Why don’t you have him send you into the bureau compound? Everyone in the city could recognize his car plate number, and I bet the guard won’t stop him.”
“He doesn’t want to be high-key.”
“Sheesh, why is he acting low-key. No wonder the guard doesn’t even know you. That’s why I had to endure the cold wind out here.”
Right then, a gust of cold wind blew over and made the two girls shiver. Jiang Wenwen immediately pulled Mu Yu in the direction of the city bureau entrance while complaining, “It’s a few hundred meters from here to the lobby of the police station. I won’t pity you if you get frozen to death!”
Mu Yu huddled up and asked, “Didn’t you tell the guard that you’re a friend of Chief Rong?”
“I did! But the guard doesn’t believe me. He wanted me to give Chief Rong a call, but I don’t have the number. I thought that you’d arrive soon anyway, and I didn’t bother to call you for Chief Rong’s number. Then, I found a shelter and waited for you there.”
The two of them chatted as they walked to the entrance. After Mu Yu flashed her ID at the guard, she led Jiang Wenwen into the city bureau all the way to the forensic office.
“Is this your office? Looks grand!” Jiang Wenwen puffed at her hands to warm them up while looking around the office. “Hey, where’s the place where you dissect bodies?”
“It’s over there.” Mu Yu pointed toward a corner deeper in the office while getting some water. “I only have a mug. Why don’t you use it to get some hot tea for yourself?”
“You can use your mug. I’ll just use the disposable cup.” Jiang Wenwen casually took one disposable cup from the pile of cups on the table beside her.
“Hey! Don’t touch it!” Mu Yu immediately stopped her friend, requesting her to put it down. “Those are Madam Feng’s items. She doesn’t like it when people touch her stuff.”
“It’s not like I’m touching anything of importance. It’s just a disposable cup. Does she have to be so difficult?” Jiang Wenwen seemed to have thought of something as she threw the cup onto the table as if she was stung on her hand. “Are those the cups you use as containers for body parts when you dissect bodies?”
“It’s not that. Who uses a disposable cup for that? You make us sound unprofessional.” Jiang Wenwen’s shocked face entertained Mu Yu. “Those are normal cups for guests to drink water with.”
“If that’s the case, why are you acting so nervous?” Jiang Wenwen took a cup that she had thrown away and aimed it at Mu Yu. “Come, you little disciple. Get some water for your master.”
Ever since Mu Yu successfully seduced Qin Jinhuan with Jiang Wenwen’s suggestion, Jiang Wenwen had been calling herself the master in front of Mu Yu.
Mu Yu accepted the cup and replied cooperatively, “Yes, master.”
The two of them laughed merrily together.
“Hmph.”
“M-Madam Feng, good morning.” When Mu Yu turned around and saw a tense Feng Rubing, she panicked and greeted Feng Rubing while secretly gesturing at Jiang Wenwen to get up and walk over from Feng Rubing’s chair.
Feng Rubing coolly replied to Mu Yu’s greeting, and without another word, she walked to her table and dragged the chair out, sweeping the paper cups strewn on the table into the trash can. Mu Yu was flustered at Feng Rubing’s bad mood, and she awkwardly went forward to apologize, “Madam Feng, I’m sorry. I…”
Feng Rubing ignored the apology, grabbed her mug, and entered the washroom. Knowing that she had caused trouble for her friend, Jiang Wenwen grinned apologetically at her friend and pouted in the direction of the washroom.
Mu Yu hurriedly shook her head and dragged Jiang Wenwen over to sit at her office table. After that, she took a plastic chair from a corner of the room. Before she could even sit, she saw Feng Rubing coming out of the bathroom after washing her mug. She immediately pointed at the water dispenser and smiled apologetically. “Madam Feng, the hot water is ready.”
Feng Rubing grunted a reply and filled her mug with water. Then, she sat back at her table, booting her computer for the day’s work.
Mu Yu thought of the breakfast she had bought for Feng Rubing, whereupon she hurriedly took the food out from the bag and handed it to Feng Rubing. “Madam Feng, I brought breakfast for you. It’s still hot. You should give it a taste.”
“Thanks. I don’t need it.”
Knowing that Feng Rubing was only being polite, Mu Yu smiled and explained, “It’s okay! I brought breakfast on my way. The soup dumplings from this shop are quite nice. You…”
“I told you I don’t want it!”
“Ah!”
Feng Rubing impatiently waved, but her hand accidentally knocked the food box off Mu Yu’s hand. The box dropped onto the floor, and the soup dumplings rolled all over the floor as soon as they hit the ground.
As Mu Yu had blocked the view, Jiang Wenwen looked on from behind and thought that Feng Rubing intentionally knocked off the food box. In that instant, she was enraged and slapped on the table while standing up. “Hey! Isn’t that too much? Yu brought you dumplings out of care. It’s fine if you don’t want it. Why would you f*cking drop them?”
“Wenwen, you misunderstood. Madam Feng didn’t do it on purpose,” Mu Yu informed Jiang Wenwen. Then, she turned to Feng Rubing and apologized profusely, “Madam Feng, I’m sorry. My friend misunderstood the situation. Please don’t…”
“I never asked her to bring breakfast for me,” Feng Rubing slammed her mug on her table and coldly retorted Jiang Wenwen.
“Huh! She trampled all over your goodwill! Yu, don’t waste your money on these gestures in the future.”
“Wenwen! Stop it!” Seeing that Feng Rubing had stood up and walked out of the office, Mu Yu panicked and followed behind her to apologize, “Madam Feng, I’m sorry. I…”
“It’s not your fault. Why do you keep apologizing?” Jiang Wenwen stopped Mu Yu. “Plus, even if it’s your fault, there is no need to apologize in that lowly manner. You’re the young mistress of the Qin Family. You could totally afford to be proud!”
Mu Yu shook her head. “In this office, I am only a rookie forensic doctor, not the young mistress of the Qin Family. Madam Feng is my senior, so I definitely have to show respect to her. How could I act insolently in front of her?”
“Even so, there’s no need to fawn at her! What’s the point of it? Plus, didn’t you notice that she’s in a bad mood? She definitely has something on her mind and has no time for you. You shouldn’t have followed her with such enthusiasm.”
Mu Yu was taken aback. “How did you know she has something on her mind?”
“Of course.” Jiang Wenwen looked proud of herself. “Look at her; although she was dressed nicely, her shoelaces were untidy, and she left out a strand of hair under her ponytail. She was obviously distracted. On top of that, her eyes looked bloodshot, her face was fatigued, and her mood was awful, all of which shows that she has encountered some problems.”
“Wow, Wenwen, how would you know…” Before Mu Yu could finish her praise, her phone rang, and she answered it immediately when she noticed it was from Rong Jian.
“Yu, have you compiled the information that I asked for?”
Mu Yu was suddenly reminded of the task that Rong Jian entrusted to her yesterday. She immediately patted her own head. “Chief Rong, I’m sorry. I totally forgot about it. I’ll ask Madam Feng for it now.”
“Not a problem. It’s not urgent. When you’re done compiling it, send it over to me.”
“Oh, okay.” Mu Yu ended the call and told Jiang Wenwen, “You can stay seated here. I’ll find Madam Feng to get the information I need.” Then, she hurriedly rushed out of the office.
Mu Yu noticed Feng Rubing was making a call on the side of the corridor, so she hurried over to bring up the issue of the information that Rong Jian needed. Before she could speak, she was shocked by Feng Rubing’s sudden exclamation, “You animal! If you dare to touch even a hair on Qiqi, I’ll give you a horrendous death!”
