My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 168
Chapter 168 A Kind Girl
“She told us that if something happened to her, we should hand this to you.” Tears streamed down Linda’s face.
“Stop crying. Your makeup is going to be ruined, and you’ll look ugly.” Abby wanted to wipe away Linda’s tears but she lifted her hand toward herself instead to wipe away her own tears.
“I can’t hold it back too,” Eve declared and promptly burst into tears. Her make-up was instantly running, looking like a mess.
“What’s the point of holding back?” Jin was sobbing loudly. “Who cares if we look ugly? There are no customers around here.”
“But Chief Rong is here!” Abby hid her face behind her hands and retorted between sniffles.
“Chief Rong is not a customer. It doesn’t matter if he sees us like this.” Even though Jin sounded unbothered, she followed Abby and hid her face while carefully wiping away her tears.
“Who knows one day Chief Rong would visit Camphor Forest?”
Rong Jian, who was drinking water while waiting for the computer to start, spilled out his water on the screen in shock.
“If Chief Rong orders my service at Camphor Forest, I’ll definitely see him free-of-charge. Chief Rong is a good man.” Eve hurriedly wiped the computer screen dry for Rong Jian and replied earnestly. When Rong Jian glanced at her, she frantically hid the lower half of her face and only smiled at him with her eyes, obviously reluctant to show him her messy side.
“Chief Rong, don’t misunderstand us. We’re not involved in illegal activities. Eve only wanted to express her respect to you.” Linda was the eldest of them all. When she realized that Rong Jian might have misunderstood their offer, she immediately explained herself.
Eve nodded in agreement, but Jin was indifferent. “Stop explaining. Even if we’re running a legal business, Chief Rong will not visit us. If he shows up at Camphor Forest again, it must be to wreck the place.”
Upon hearing that, Eve meekly asked Rong Jian, “Chief Rong, do you think we’re dirty?”
Feeling the gaze of all four women on him, he instantly felt at loss because he was never good at dealing with women.
“Alright. That’s enough. Don’t put him in a difficult position with that nonsense.” Linda attempted to resolve the situation for Rong Jian. “We’re here to send Kiki’s item to Chief Rong.”
At the mention of Kiki, the other three instantly cried because everyone knew the answer to Eve’s question. They did not cover their faces this time. Rong Jian’s gaze swept past each of them and replied, “Compared to a pure body, I believe that a pure soul is more important.” Next, he inserted the USB flash disk at the computer port.
His words touched the four women, who scrambled to think of a reply, only to be stopped by the notification sounds on the computer. They shifted their gaze to the screen, curious to know the contents of the USB flash disk.
Rong Jian clicked on the drive and found two videos in it. One was marked for Rong Jian, and the other was addressed to Linda. He clicked open the one for him and the screen jumped to show Kiki’s face. In the video, she was barefaced and wearing a soft smile. Compared to the three women currently standing in front of the screen, she looked comparatively innocent and cute.
“Chief Rong, how are you? I would have passed away by the time you find your way to this video even though I’m not sure how I’d die.”
“Kiki!” The youngest and the most expressive of all, Eve, started to cry. Beside her, Jin immediately gave her a hug to comfort her while staring at the screen through tears.
In the video, Kiki was talking about a sad topic in a calm manner, maintaining a smile on her face as if she was not talking about her own mortality.
“Chief Rong, I’m uncultured and unsure of the best way to express my hatred toward the animal, Zhao Yongli! I only know that I wish to tear off his flesh and bones every day. I wish to turn him into minced meat. I will not coexist with him peacefully. No matter how I murder him, it will not release me from the hatred toward him because he ruined my life. No, he didn’t only ruin my entire life; he also ruined the lives of my family of three!”
The mention of Zhao Yongli made her seethe and grit her teeth. “Chief Rong, I know you don’t believe that I’m the murderer. I’ll tell you the truth—I’m not the murderer, but I hired someone to do it for me. Of course, I will not reveal the identity of the assassin to you. He helped me to get rid of that animal, which makes me indebted to his kindness. Even when I’m dead, I will be looking after him. If you don’t believe me, you can look into the properties under my name. I’ve sold my house and car in order to proceed with the murder. My plan to hire an assassin started to hatch a long time ago.”
When Kiki was in the middle of her explanation, Rong Jian had shifted his focus to something on the table. His gaze landed on the physical records of Kiki’s sale of her house and her car, which he had obtained earlier. The sight of it made him sigh.
He had finally understood the reason behind filming the video. Once the police confirmed her as the murderer, she would kill herself to “escape the conviction”. If she did that, the case could never be overturned. Even if Luo Mingan had to be jailed for murdering his wife, he could at least escape the death sentence due to the tragic backstory of the case.
Kiki sold off her house and car for cash in the guise of hiring the assassin. When Rong Jian thought of all the efforts she had gone through to save her father from the death sentence, which turned out to be a misunderstanding because Luo Mingan was not the murderer, he felt sorry for Kiki and silently praised her for being a filial daughter.
“Chief Rong.” Hearing that Kiki was calling his name, he swiftly lifted his head again. “Don’t worry. Although I’m filled with hate, I have never done anything to harm society. I did not expose anyone to HIV, and I’m very careful whenever I interact with my family and friends.”
Then, Kiki sighed in video. “Chief Rong, I lied to you about something. That day, the animal Zhao Yongli came to meet me at Camphor Forest, but it wasn’t to order my service. He was there to threaten me, asking for a sum of money, or else he’d tell my father that I was selling my body, which would make him feel sad and ashamed of his own daughter.”
“You didn’t see how disgusting Zhao Yongli’s expression was. I had an impulse to bite on my finger and shove the wound into his mouth to spread my HIV. But I knew that I couldn’t do that because that’d mean hurting innocent people around him. I only hated him, not the others. The main goal of my life is to see him die in the most gruesome way ever. Now, my wish is granted. I’m satisfied, and I can leave the world without regrets.”
“What a fool! Kiki is a fool! Why would she die when she could have lived? It’s not worth it to die for a horrible human being!” Eve’s sad crying noises drowned out Kiki’s speech in the video and prompted more crying from the others. Rong Jian shook his head and turned off the video.
He finally figured out why both Kiki and Luo Mingan would want to kill Little Guo when they were in fact kind in nature. It was only a show to prove how much they hated Zhao Yongli in order to trick the police to believe in them. In reality, they never wanted to hurt Little Guo. Otherwise, the kid would have been dead by now.
“Chief Rong, please turn on the other video. I want to hear what Kiki has to say to me.” Linda stared at him with her teary eyes. He nodded and played the other video.
The second video was Kiki’s farewell speech for her friends. First, she thanked all of them and informed Linda that she’d left a sum of money for her. The money was in a bank safe, and the key was in the drawer by the bed. Kiki also advised Linda not to trust men easily besides saving money for retirement. She even requested Linda to help visit her father, Luo Mingan in jail when she had the time.
It turned out that Linda had stopped working in the industry all because she fell for a man. She did not expect to be robbed of all her savings by the man, putting her in poverty and forcing her to live on the Old Street.
Kiki’s will made Linda cry violently. The other girls felt sympathetic and sorry as they hugged each other and cried.
Rong Jian shook his head and sighed. He knew that Linda had understood Kiki’s intention. When Kiki left all the money to Linda, she had expected Linda to take care of her aging father. At that time, Kiki still did not know Luo Mingan’s identity.
At the end, Rong Jian sent away the four women who cried their eyes swollen and messed up their makeup. He sat in front of his table and closed his eyes in contemplation.
Three days later, it was gloomy and dark early in the morning. The sky was filled with thick and heavy clouds in greyish yellow. The cold winds blew strongly and were bone-chilling.
Knowing that a huge snowstorm was looming on the horizon, Mu Yu insisted on leaving her warm bed early because it was the day of Luo Mingan and Kiki’s burial. She planned to go to the crematorium with her colleagues to receive and to deliver their ashes to the Tai Cemetery.
“I’ll follow you.” The drowsy Qin Jinhuan blinked his sleepy eyes and sat up from the bed.
“It’s okay. Just go to work.” Mu Yu smiled and pressed him back onto the bed. “It’s still early. You can sleep for a little more.”
Although Rong Jian had insisted that there was another murderer behind the two murder cases, the leadership in the Bureau decided that since Luo Mingan had admitted to the murders, they wanted to close the case. It was all due to the vicious nature of the cases that attracted enormous public attention. The leadership was mainly concerned that dragging the case would only create the perception of incompetence, which would negatively affect their image.
Not only that, the Bureau had dismantled the Special Investigation Unit and allowed two days of paid time off. On top of that, the Bureau set aside the time to award them. After arguing and failing to persuade them, Rong Jian slammed the door and left.
Mu Yu asked Qin Jinhuan and Wen Zeyu to console him and to bring him to West Bay for relaxation for two days. However, instead of going with them, she rested well at home over the two days. The three men had only returned the night before. Seeing that Qin Jinhuan was rather pale in the face, she felt sorry and refused to wake him up early just to accompany her.
Qin Jinhuan took the chance to give her a hug. “If you’re not here, I can’t sleep.”
“What’s the difference between with and without me?” Mu Yu responded and glanced at the pillow between them.
“It’s different! With you around, I will feel more assured.” Even though he gave such a remark, he could not help but glare bitterly at the pillow between them.
Mu Yu pretended that she didn’t know about it and gently pushed him away, tucking him back in the bed. Today was a solemn day, and she had no mood to joke around.
“Yu, I…”
“Let’s talk again at night.” She planted a soft kiss on his forehead and went to wash her face with a smile. Sensing that there was an underlying context in her words, he was filled with joy and expectations.
After breakfast, Huang Bo chauffeured Mu Yu who had planned to meet up with her colleagues at the Bureau. Halfway, she suddenly remembered that Feng Rubing always forgot to get breakfast. She thus asked Huang Bo to stop at a breakfast stall by the street to buy some food for Feng Rubing and Rong Jian.
When she was about to pay for her breakfast orders, she was tapped on the shoulder. She warily turned around and was shocked by the person behind her.
