“Who was that? Mu Yu immediately asked.

“Do you remember Linda? She’s Kiki’s good friend.”

“Yes! I remember Kiki had been staying at her home recently.”

“Yes. She’s in a hurry to meet me probably because she has something to tell me about Kiki,” Rong Jian responded while heading toward the entrance of the rooftop. Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan immediately followed up.

“Yu, it’s almost dawn. Just head home with Huan and rest,” Rong Jian suggested when they entered the elevator.

“I want to…”

“You need rest!” Qin Jinhuan rudely cut her off.

“Huan also needs to work in the morning.” Rong Jian helped to persuade her, but instead she suggested, “Huan, why don’t you go home? Chief Rong and I…”

“No!” Qin Jinhuan gripped her hand tightly and said firmly without any room for discussion.

“Yu, Linda has stated that she only wanted to see me. Even if you follow me back, you cannot meet her. How about this? After I talk to her, I’ll give you a call to explain the situation.” Rong Jian was aware of Qin Jinhuan’s displeasure and had to say so to discourage Mu Yu.

“Alright. Yu, go home.” When he was speaking, his foot had stepped on the accelerator and the car sped away.

“Let’s go home.” Huang Bo had driven the car over, and Qin Jinhuan opened the car door for her.

“Huan, what kind of clue do you think Linda could provide?” After the car started moving, she was still dwelling on the latest situation.

“You don’t have to overthink for now. When Chief Rong calls, you’ll get updated on everything.” Qin Jinhuan put his arms around her and hinted at her to stop mulling over it.

Indeed, Mu Yu was exhausted and she rested her limp body in his arms, but her thoughts could not stop racing. She mumbled, “Kiki contacted too many people on a daily basis and those customers weren’t even regulars. If we wish to find out the murderer among them, it’d be impossible!”

“Huh!” All of a sudden, she excitedly sprung up. “I remember the female owner of the Camphor Forest once told me that in order to facilitate the bonus distribution among the girls, the club would register everyone’s hours! Speechless, Qin Jinhuan stared at her. When he was about to advise her to rest, she slapped her thighs and shouted, “Oh dear! What do we do?”

“What’s that?” He looked at her nervously.

“Kiki had AIDS, and she was a sex worker. Wouldn’t that mean that a huge group of her customers have been exposed to HIV?”

“You didn’t have any close interactions with her, did you?” For Qin Jinhuan, the top priority was her safety.

“Before tonight, I’d only met her once, and we didn’t even talk much. There was no close contact at all.” Mu Yu still looked worried. “But Chief Rong and Officer Liu were the ones who had multiple interactions with her, especially tonight when Chief Rong stayed so close to her despite her bleeding. I’m worried that…”

“Don’t worry. Rong Jian is very vigilant when it comes to self-protection. He’ll be fine.”

“That’s good to hear. I hope he and Officer Liu are both fine.” After hearing the words of comfort from Qin Jinhuan, she still felt heavy in her heart.

“Alright, don’t think too much. Get some rest now.” Once again, he pulled her into an embrace. “I know how badly you want to get to the bottom of the case, but there’s no point getting too worked up. Instead, you should take a good rest and get to work tomorrow in your best condition.”

Noticing that his voice was a little hoarse, she realized that he had been up all night by her side. When she recalled Rong Jian’s remark that Qin Jinhuan had to work in the morning, she instantly felt guilty.

“Why apologize?”

“You’re swamped with work all day but still have to worry about me. I’m really…”

She was well aware that his situation was more dangerous than hers. After all, he was facing not only the unfathomable business competition, but also unpredictable family conflicts of interest.

“Okay.” He nodded, clasped her hand and patted her arm softly.

A feeling of warmth spread through her body, and she hugged him back with a satisfied smile. Too many incidents happened in the course of two days, and she was tired from handling them. Earlier, she was merely forcing herself to remain strong. She had decided to listen to his advice and rest well in order to return to work in the best condition in the morning. Soon, she was overcome by a fit of drowsiness and slowly closed her eyes.

When he saw that the woman in his arms was finally fast asleep, he let out a sigh of relief. Even though the heater in the car was on, he worried that she’d catch a cold and reached out to take a blanket from the back of the seat to drape on her.

However, his slight movement caused her body to stir. He hurriedly stopped his actions and continued patting her arm with rhythm.

Mu Yu wiggled for a bit as she hugged him tight, mumbling something incoherent. Soon, her voice died down and she drifted back to deep sleep. He was tickled by her cute movements and continued patting her in his still seated position until the car rolled to a stop in front of their house.

Ahead of them, Huang Bo got out of the car and opened the door. “Boss…”

“Shhh…” Qin Jinhuan gently pushed her to a side and with both of his hands, he slowly moved his body toward the car door. When one of his legs was on the ground, he used one arm to support her back and stepped his other leg out. With one knee kneeling on the car seat, he carefully lifted her in his arms and shifted the equilibrium to his other leg. Slowly, he managed to get her out of her car and bring her upstairs on tiptoes.

“Boss…”

“Let’s talk again in the morning.”

“Sure.” Huang Bo dared not make any noise and tiptoed in front him to open and hold the door for them. He escorted them back to their room and closed the door for them before tiptoeing back to the first floor.

Placing Mu Yu back on the bed and carefully taking off her cotton-padded clothes, he made her lie down and tuck her in. Then, he went into the bathroom to fetch some warm water, using it to clean her face and wipe her hands. He also took another basin of warm water to clean her feet.

When he was done with everything, he draped the blanket on her again. Seeing that she was still in her dreams, he could not help but flash a faint smile. After storing everything away, he went to the bathroom to briefly wash up and change into his pajamas. Lying back on the bed beside her, he gently took her hand and boldly examined her peaceful face.

If she had been awake, she would have drawn back her hand and taken a pillow to demarcate their spaces. She would even order him to move to the side a little or she herself would turn her back to him.

It felt good not to have a huge pillow between them. Qin Jinhuan was smiling and feeling warm in his heart.

“This case is fishy. Chief Rong, what do you think?” Her voice abruptly boomed in the room, causing him to furrow his brows. How could she think about her case in her sleep! And she was talking to Rong Jian in her dreams, not him!

Rong Jian is a detestable man! How dare he occupy her dreams? Annoyed, Qin Jinhuan would not allow Rong Jian to stay with Mu Yu for too long in the future.

“A-choo!” The moment Rong Jian wandered into the lobby of the Bureau, he made a loud sneeze.

“Oh no, Chief Rong, did you catch a cold? Do you need Dr. Rong to prescribe you some medicine?” Liu Xiaofan who came up to greet him immediately expressed his concern.

“Don’t make a fuss. Where’s Linda?” Indifferent, Rong Jian took a napkin to wipe his nose.

“She’s in your office. There’s more than Linda. A few pretty ladies are waiting there too.”

Liu Xiaofan who had always loved gaping at pretty women was in shock after he learned of Kiki’s AIDS. Therefore, he willingly stayed in the lobby to wait for Rong Jian instead of socializing with Kiki’s friends, especially Linda who had been living with Kiki. He secretly made the decision to go for a HIV test in the morning. The thought of it added burden onto his shoulders, and he couldn’t help but feel disgruntled at Kiki.

“Huh?” When Liu Xiaofan was pulled back to reality, he almost bumped into Rong Jian and immediately stopped in his tracks, smiling sheepishly.

Rong Jian smacked his head and reprimanded him gently, “When are you going to quit your habit of losing your mind whenever you see pretty women?”

“I’ve quit doing so!” Liu Xiaofan looked wronged. “If not, why would I wait here for you? I would have been chatting them up in your office.”

“Then why are you absent-minded? Is it because you didn’t sleep for two nights? Your stamina…”

“Not because of that. Just…”

“What? Is it family matters?” Rong Jian stopped and stared at his subordinate who was hesitant to reveal anything.

“Not family matters. It’s my personal issue. As you know, I had many interactions with Kiki, but I didn’t know that she had AIDS before.” Liu Xiaofan was extremely upset. Rong Jian finally understood the source of his worries and nervously checked with him, “Did you sleep with her?”

Just like what Qin Jinhuan had said, Rong Jian was an experienced officer who had dealt with different criminals. Therefore, he was extremely careful with self-protection and was not worried of potentially exposing himself to HIV at all.

“Not to that extent! I knew that she was a sex worker and a suspect. How could I sleep with her? I-It’s just that…”

Rong Jian immediately understood and started scolding him in disappointment, “Have you forgotten my lectures? You always ignore my advice! You’ll never shed tears until you see your own coffin!”

On the other hand, Liu Xiaofan was close to tears. “Chief Rong, there is no point talking about that now. In the event that I contract HIV and die, you have to file it as a death on duty to get some compensation for my elderly parents.”

“If it was light physical contact, it’s unlikely that you’d contract the virus. Just get tested in the morning for assurance.”

“Alright. Even if you contracted HIV, there is usually an incubation period. You’re not going to die that soon.” Unbothered, Rong Jian checked his watch and commented, “There’s not much work to do now. Get some rest in the dorm and get tested in the morning. Let me know when you receive the results.” Then, he patted Liu Xiaofan on the head and hurried toward his office.

“Hey! Chief Rong is here!” Before he managed to get to his office, he heard the exclamation of a group of women. He lifted his head to see four scantily clad women with heavy makeup standing in front of his office.

Rong Jian recognized that the four were the late Kiki’s good friends. The leader was Linda, and the other three were Jin, Abby and Eve. All four had obviously been crying. Their eyes were swollen and red, but their makeup was intact, probably because they had touched up.

“Chief Rong, when I received a call from Officer Liu about Kiki’s death, I immediately hurried over with my sisters,” Linda said between sobs. “This is something that Kiki asked me to hand to you when she was still alive.”

Linda took out a USB flash disk from her bag and passed it to Rong Jian.
