My Lovely Wife is a Forensic Doctor - Chapter 160
Chapter 160 The Real Murderer Had Shown Up
“Are you really the murderer?” When Mu Yu spoke in shock, she stepped back for fear that her reaction would provoke Wang Linhua, who had murdered Zhao Yongli in an extremely cruel fashion.
“Yes, I’m the murderer, and Kiki is merely taking the blame for me.” Wang Linhua stood in his spot unperturbed.
“Why would she do that?”
Wang Linhua flashed her a faint smile. “By now, you have probably known that I’m her biological father. She doesn’t want to see me suffering in jail.”
“Are you really her father? But you look like you’re in your mid-thirties!” Even though she knew the DNA test result, she still felt doubtful.
“Let’s just say that I take good care of myself.” Wang Linhua evaded the topic and went straight to the point. “Doctor Mu, Kiki is innocent, and she has nothing to do with the case. It’s all my doing. I hope that you can convey my message to Chief Rong and have Kiki released.”
While speaking, he handed her two bags of physical evidence. “These two are the murder weapons. Even though I have cleaned the bloodstains and fingerprints on it, you can match them with the prints at the crime scene. I’m sure you’ll get a conclusive outcome.”
Mu Yu did not accept the bags. Instead, she softly questioned him, “Why didn’t you turn in the weapons and yourself at the police station?”
“I have some unfinished business.” Wang Linhua stared at the ground. “I beg that you give me some time. I’ll turn myself in before dawn.”
“Are you thinking of taking revenge on Gong Lilan?”
“Why would I do so? I have nothing against her. I’m just going to buy some paper money to burn to Kiki’s late mother, praying that she will protect Kiki from the heavens.” He drew a deep sigh. “Once I’m in jail, I won’t have another chance to burn paper money for my late wife. This will be my last time.”
“If you had known it would come to this, you should not have committed the crime.”
“I do not regret my actions.” Wang Linhua’s sighing expression instantly changed to a spiteful look. “I do not regret killing Zhao Yongli. He deserved to die! In fact, I even regret letting him die so easily. If it were not for the time constraint, I would have tortured him to his death!”
Mu Yu thought of Zhao Yongli’s despicable deeds and was at a loss for words.
“Doctor Mu, don’t be scared. I’m not a vicious person, and I will never hurt the innocent. I’m just killing the man who deserves it.” His face changed into an affectionate look. “Doctor Mu, you are probably about the same age as Kiki. All these years, whenever I see girls that are of my daughter’s age, I would instantly take a liking to them and steal a few more glances. I hope that those young girls could be happy and loved. I hope they won’t experience what my Kiki experienced…”
As he was choking on tears, he did not continue talking. Mu Yu instantly felt sorry for him and stopped seeing him as a scary character. She wanted to comfort him but could not find the best words to do so.
Thankfully, Wang Linhua gathered himself fairly soon and shoved the two bags into her arms while begging her, “Doctor Mu, please convey my message to Chief Rong. As long as he releases Kiki, I will definitely turn myself in at dawn and cooperate in detailing the murder process. However, if you refuse to grant my final wish, don’t blame me for not cooperating; the murder weapons do not bear my fingerprints and DNA. So, they could not be used to incriminate me.”
At that point, he took out a tiny packet from his pocket and waved it at her. “There’s cyanide in here. I have prepared to kill myself at any time. If the police forcefully arrest me, I will choose to kill myself on the spot. Then, not only would you not catch the real murderer, you would be accused of causing an innocent citizen to kill himself. Isn’t that a much greater loss?”
“Don’t! Don’t! Why would you kill yourself?” Mu Yu immediately consoled him. “I’ll pass on your message to the Bureau leadership.”
“Sorry for troubling you, Doctor Mu. You’re a kind person and you will be rewarded for that.”
“Hey!”
“What?” Wang Linhua who was preparing to leave stopped in his tracks.
“About the… the murder case of Sun Meilan in the West City forest… Was that your work too?” Mu Yu asked him tentatively.
“Yes.”
“But why her? What happened between you and her?”
“I will answer all your questions in detail after I turn myself in. Now, I have to go settle my personal matters. Don’t worry, I won’t harm innocent souls anymore. By the way, where’s the cab that you took here?”
“I-It’s on the road leading to the village.”
“Thanks, Doctor Mu. I request that you immediately have the police station release Kiki. When she’s freed, please send me a text so that I can turn myself in as soon as I finish my business. That way, I will keep my promise to you.”
After Wang Linhua gave her the final reminder, he ran toward the main road without looking back. Mu Yu was left staring at his back with complicated feelings. Even though the man looked like a wife-killing maniac, their interaction caused her to develop a different opinion toward him. Now, she felt more sorry for Wang Linhua and Kiki.
“Yu, you should go back.” She was pulled back from her deep thoughts by Rong Jian’s voice in her ear. She hurriedly asked him, “Chief Rong, did you hear what Wang Linhua had told me?”
It turned out that when she was entering the countryside from the city, Rong Jian gave her a call and requested that she keep her phone connected when she was meeting with Wang Linhua in order for him to be prepared in his hiding near the meeting location.
“Yes, I overheard everything. Yu, you have done a good job. I’ll take over from here.”
“What about the evidence that Wang Linhua handed to me?”
“Give them to Cheng Xiang.”
“Huan?” She heard his voice and turned to see Qin Jinhuan, which made her astonished. “Why are you here? When did you arrive?”
“Boss arrived here before you and Huang Bo.” Cheng Xiang took over the bags in her hand while explaining.
Mu Yu finally understood the reason behind Huang Bo’s steady driving today, which was different from his usual habit of speeding. She initially thought that it was due to the nightfall, but it turned out that he wanted to allow Qin Jinhuan and the rest to arrive earlier. She gazed at Qin Jinhuan, feeling both guilty and touched.
“Yu, go home with Huan. I’ll end the call.” The call with Rong Jian was still ongoing up until that moment.
“Hey! Wait! When you release Kiki, remember to inform me so that I can text Wang Linhua.”
“Okay. I’m going to call the leadership for their approval.” Rong Jian ended the call.
“Are you cold?” Qin Jinhuan had unbuttoned his cotton quilted coat and pulled her into his embrace.
Mu Yu placed her phone into her pocket and wrapped her cold arms around his warm waist. She looked up at him and replied with a serious look, “I won’t feel cold as long as you’re here.”
Wang Linhua had promised not to harm any innocent person, and Rong Jian also assured her that he would take care of the matter. Therefore, her nerves finally got to calm down slightly.
“Let’s go home.” After she stood up straight, he held her hand and put another arm around her shoulder, leading her toward the village.
She guessed that his car was parked in the village and therefore did not ask further. Flashing a smile at him, she followed suit. Along the way, her heart felt heavier.
“Huan, did you hear the conversation between Wang Linhua and me just now?”
“Yup.”
“Had Zhao Yongli be kinder, I think that Wang Linhua would not have been that cruel to him.”
“Everything happens for a reason. What comes around goes around. There is no absolute right or wrong.”
Mu Yu chuckled. “I haven’t seen you for an hour, and you’ve turned into a philosopher now.”
“Just stating the facts.”
While they were talking, Qin Jinhuan’s phone rang. It was an incoming call from Shang Qi, which he answered immediately.
“President Qin, have you settled Yu’s issue?”
“Yes, it’s all settled.”
“Is everything alright?”
“Yes, it’s not a big deal.”
“Oh, good to hear that.” Shang Qi quickly offered his thanks later, “President Qin, thank you for your full support to me and Xi. Don’t worry, no matter how he turns out after the surgery, I will do my best to take care of him.”
“Sure. You are still recovering, so take care of yourself for now.”
“Thank you for your concern, President Qin.”
“Why don’t you call me ‘Huan’? You have started calling Yu by her first name anyway.”
Instead of calling him ‘Huan’, Shang Qi only chuckled on the other end. One could tell that he was very happy.
“When did you call me by my first name actually?” Mu Yu was shocked to hear Qin Chengxi’s voice through the phone. “Are they still together? Didn’t Ying bring Xi with her?”
Qin Jinhuan ended the call and explained with a smile, “Due to a request from Xi, they will only leave at twelve in the midnight.”
Mu Yu instantly understood the reason behind the request and she grinned. “How lovey-dovey. Where are they? Why don’t we visit them now?”
“You want to be a third wheel?”
“No! I just wanted to see Xi’s happy face. I have never seen him smiling before.”
Her words touched his heart. He stopped to stare at her and blurted out, “Let’s go visit them then?”
“Great!”
The two reached a consensus and happily walked toward the car in the village.
Forty minutes later, the two arrived at the secret accommodation that Wen Zeyu had arranged for Qin Chengxi. Rong Ying opened the door for them. The moment Mu Yu entered the house, she saw Qin Chengxi and Shang Qi chatting to each other while sitting on the sofa. Even though both looked pale, their smiles were bright. Mu Yu and Qin Jinhuan smiled at each other knowingly.
“Huan, Yu, why are you here?” Upon seeing them, Qin Chengxi frantically pushed Shang Qi away as his bright smile turned into a shy expression.
“We’re here to visit you. How are you? Feeling better? You’ve probably recovered from the anesthesia.” Qin Jinhuan did not take the opportunity to make fun of his brother.
“I’ve recovered. Huan, I’m fine. I’m feeling okay.”
“A merry heart makes a cheerful countenance,” Wen Zeyu emerged from the washroom and joked.
“Zeyu? Why are you here too?” Mu Yu was taken aback.
“That’s because I care about Xi.”
“It’s all because of Ying.”
“Hey! Huan, don’t call me out.” Wen Zeyu protested against Qin Jinhuan’s blunt exposure.
“You’re thick skinned enough. I don’t have to take care of your feelings.”
“Sigh, this is what happens when you make the wrong friends. I’m going to ignore you all. I’m looking for Ying.”
“Don’t look for me. I’m here.” With a smile on her face, Rong Ying had a tray in her hands, on which there were two bowls of hot noodles. “Xi and Shang Qi both haven’t had dinner, so I made some noodles for them.”
“Wow. It’s so fragrant.” The scent of the green onion stimulated Mu Yu’s appetite and the sight of the food lit up her eyes.
“There’s more in the pot. Yu, I’ll get you some.”
“I’ll go with you.” Mu Yu naturally followed Rong Ying into the kitchen.
“Yu, why are you gluttonous? Are you pregnant?” Wen Zeyu grinned and shoved Qin Jinhuan with his elbow. Qin Jinhuan gave him side-eye but that did not deter him from inching closer and making jokes. “Both of you have been together for quite a long time, but we have not heard any good news. Is it because you are struggling with some problems down there? Do you need me to get you some supplements?”
“Save that for yourself. Take more of your supplements. You won’t die from overconsumption anyway,” Qin Jinhuan replied sarcastically and shouted at the kitchen. “Ying, please serve me a bowl of noodles too.”
Because of the lack of appetite, Qin Jinhuan and Mu Yu did not eat much during the early dinner. At 10 p.m., he finally felt hungry when his mood lightened up.
“Huh, alright. I’ll serve you some noodles right now,” Rong Ying responded to the request for food and continued answering Mu Yu’s question. “My friend owns a resort at Ping City. The environment there is very suitable for Xi’s rehabilitation. I plan to bring Xi over there and stay for a month.”
“Ping City?”
“Yeah, have you visited that place before?”
“My family moved here from Ping City.” The moment Mu Yu accidentally let slip, she regretted her carelessness and hurriedly walked out of the kitchen for fear that Rong Ying would start to question her on her old life in Ping City.
“Oh, I didn’t know that you have moved here from Ping City!” Without noticing Mu Yu’s abrupt change, Rong Ying only focused on transferring the noodles into the bowls as she mumbled to herself, “I wonder which district you were from. My friend’s resort is in Beicheng District. I heard that the area used to be a low-income neighborhood.”
When Mu Yu heard the mention of the low-income neighborhood, her body unconsciously trembled in fear. Her family used to stay in the vicinity.
“Low-income neighborhood? Huan, was it the same neighborhood that you had Zijun investigate last time?” Wen Zeyu carelessly made a remark.
“Zeyu!” Before Qin Zeyu finished his rebuke, they all heard a crash as the bowl in Mu Yu’s hand slipped and crashed onto the floor. She was instantly gripped by fear and panic.
“Yu!” Qin Jinhuan was afraid that he had brought up past memories that she did not wish to relive and rushed up to support her.
“Yu?”
“What happened?”
The others stared at her nervously but were ignored by her. With shaking hands, she swiftly dialed Rong Jian’s number. “Chief Rong, are you following Wang Linhua?”
Rong Jian sounded very upset. “He was highly alert about the surveillance. We lost him right when he entered the city.”
“Oh my god!” Her voice cracked under extreme anxiety.
